Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well as if he isn't busy enough. New Zealand Motorsport
Icon Greg Murphy has a new role coming up in
November for the twenty twenty four Vialoh Adelaide five hundred,
twenty fifth anniversary of the race. Murph's role is Fanbassador
and he joins me this morning, murf, good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Oh I get abj. How are you going?

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Great? Mate? So please explain. What's a fanbassador?

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yes, an interesting name. What's my role? Well, you know,
I got the opportunity, got asked if I wanted to
come to Adelaide to be a part of the twenty
fifth celebrations of the great event and come and hang
out schmooves in the corporate sweet hang out with the fans,
go to cool concerts, go to a speedway event on

(00:49):
the Saturday, on the Friday night inside the complex and
just basically walk around enjoying myself. And so I really,
I just I thought about that for about seconds or less,
and what that sounds like me? I'll go to Adelaide
for the first time with enough of any stress related
activities and I'm looking forward to it.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Well, let's go back. You were part of the first
race on the streets of Adelaide back twenty five years ago,
in nineteen ninety nine. Tell us about that.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
That puts things in perspective, doesn't it be you're a
younger man as well.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Well, I think it might have been there.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Yeah, well I was there twenty five years ago. That's right,
the inaugural Adelaide five hundred back back then, which you know,
set the standards for basically future events supercar events, and
you know, it was such a significant part of the
shift and change, you know, for the category, and it became,

(01:53):
you know what every other event wanted to be on
the calendar, so it was. It really did transform supercars
and took it off on a whole new direction.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
You said you loved racing there one of your favorite tracks.
Why was that, merve?

Speaker 2 (02:08):
I think it's just a thrill in the bars, And
you know, I was always a street circuit fan. I
love street circuits. I love the challenge of the you know,
not being able to make mistakes. I love being up
close to you know, the concrete walls, using every single
millimeter plus some the chicanes, just the environment. You know,

(02:30):
the crowds were always up close to the to the
concrete walls and I don't know, it's just just an
amazing vibe to get the chance to race on the
temporary circuit. And you Adelaide obviously started back in eighty
five with Formula one and it's got a monster amount
of history behind it and you know, it became a
Supercars of England ninety nine and it's never looked back.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
Talking about driving cars and racing, you were recently competing
at Bathurst, not in the main game, but in the
classic field. What was that like getting back into an
older supercar.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
That's awesome. I mean it's like the same reason I
want to go to Adelaide and just be a part
of the event. You know, it was stress free. I
got to drive a very cool nine one Perkins built
Commodore on you know, on the best track in the
Southern Hemisphere, one of the best tracks in the world,
and just enjoy it. It wasn't competitive, it wasn't you know,

(03:30):
there was no stress involved. It was just being amongst
an amazing field of historic cars that have a lot
of part to play obviously in the history of the sport.
And the fans react to that stuff. They love it
and I like driving them and so it was really
I was very honored to be able to have the
opportunity to go there and just be a part of

(03:50):
the event on that basis. And I enjoyed Baptist this
year greatly by because of that and the fact I
didn't really have any any big responsible He's got to
spend some time with my mates that rip cut up
on the mountain and enjoyed the you know, the fan
engagement with that as well. So you know, I get
to do that again for Adelaide, and I feel very
lucky to be able to do that.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
Betist this year famous for the one safety car. Lots
of people have said it was pretty boring? What did
you make of it?

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Yeah, I mean it wasn't. It wasn't an absolute classic race,
was it. I mean, you can't. You can't find a
way to it, to explain it any differently. You know,
you can, you can use as many words as you like,
but the fact of the facts that it wasn't a
barn storm of a race. But I did appreciate, very
much appreciate the competition between especially Brodie to Sticky and

(04:42):
brock Feeding. I thought they're both their drives. We were stunning,
you know, to be as committed as what they were
and to put that much pressure on each other to
maintain such a high level performance throughout you know, those
stints there at the end, you know, you've got to
you've got to give credit to that and testament to

(05:04):
their desire and their skill levels to not make a
mistake and drive those cars absolutely at ten tenths for
was it sixty odd laps so or more actually, so
you know, yeah, but that they were in the cars
for like two and a half or three since at
the end, and so you've got to really put that
into context of how difficult that is and what a

(05:27):
job they both did. So I, you know, I appreciate
that side of it, even though for the fans that
might not have been, you know, a classic race that
we've had in the past.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
And it certainly looks like the championship this year could
go right down to the wire. We're racing again this
weekend on the streets of the Gold Coast. Three or
four drivers can still win it all, can't they?

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Yeah, absolutely, these there's foreign contention. Cam Waders is probably
on the fringe of falling off that if you know,
he needs to have a great weekend, which he can have,
absolutely can have this weekend. He could easily go out
there and win those races and put the others under pressure.
But the Gold Coast delivers, you know, some some real

(06:08):
topsy turvy results and that's what I love about it.
And that's what is going to be exciting this weekend
because the championship is still well alive and it'll go
down to the wire in Adelaide for sure. And that's
what we want for Adelaide five hundred to have an
event where you know, the championship is on the wire
and celebrate it with you know, with one of the

(06:30):
best events that you'll ever go to.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
In great news at the beginning of this week for
Richie Stanaway being picked up by Premier Racing for next season.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
It's awesome, you know, I feel so happy for Richie.
It's been another challenging year and albeit you know, he's
turned that around in the last few race meetings. He's
just he's really relaxed now. He realizes that he needs
to just basically trust his instincts, trust his ability and
just drive the car, you know, the way he does

(07:04):
so well with his flare and that experience that he's got.
But also that skill level that he's got and since
he's sort of been released from you know, being under
a shadow around if he's going to have a drive
next year, he's he's showcasing his skill level at the
highest level and so next year within you know Premier Racing,

(07:27):
who have got some very good people and Peter Shaberris
is a very passionate racer himself. Obviously, I think it's
five times top fuel Dragster five or maybe it's more
than that. Australian champion he's got. He's got big plans
for that team. And I think Richie and Jimmy Golding,
who've been teammates in the past with Garry Rodgers Motorsport,

(07:49):
they get on really well. I think they're going to
be quite a formidable little team.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
And Murph, what are your thoughts on the format for
next year's championship that basically sees the championship down to
a grand Final.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
I'm a fan. I'm just excited by change in supercars.
It's been stagnant for too long. We haven't had anything
that is groundbreaking like this for probably since Bathist and
Sandown were added to the championship. So I'm all for it.
I think the playoff season in NASCAR is actually really

(08:24):
interesting and really exciting, and we can have a mini
version of that in Supercars, and so I take my
hat off to the owners Barclay Netlefold and the Supercars
team for actually, you know, really coming out of the
skin and doing something different and trying it out there.
So I reckon it's exciting, and you know that the
last race of the year next year in Adelaide will

(08:47):
be the race that determines the champion, and knowing that
already is something to look forward to.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
WEP, thanks for your time this morning. Look forward to
seeing you and the Adelaide five hundred fan bass for
there coming in November.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
Thanks b K.
