Speaker 1 (00:07):
What a treat, fellas. What an absolute treat. Two comedy
legends in the studio with us. The one and only
Johnny Brough and Jackie Van Beek. G'day, team.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
How's life?
Speaker 3 (00:18):
It's two. G'day, Jase.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Yeah, two legends, man. Two legends.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Two and only John Brough, Jackie Van Beek.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Yes. Yes. How are you?
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Are you good?
Speaker 4 (00:29):
Good, thank you. Hang on, don't you know these guys?
Why is the chemistry so off? What have you done?
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Nothing at all.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Lots of heavy stuff in the past.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
A lot of bridges burnt.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Going to dredge it all up.
Speaker 5 (00:40):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
We're not going to get into all that.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Do you know what's interesting is four out of the
five people in this room have been in what we
do in the shadows.
Speaker 4 (00:47):
Hands up.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
That's true, yes.
Speaker 4 (00:50):
Okay, oh, Keezy's just a radio guy, not an actor.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Who's been in Educators?
Speaker 4 (00:57):
Who was supposed to.
Speaker 6 (00:58):
Be an educator?
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Three out of five. Well, I was asked to be
an educator.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
You'd be fabulous.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
But it was literally, I was shopping with my daughter
and it was like, can you come in now? And
I was like, well.
Speaker 4 (01:07):
That's how we cast.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
I can't come in now because I'm with my daughter shopping.
So I missed out on my opportunity.
Speaker 7 (01:13):
What part did we want you for?
Speaker 4 (01:14):
A pastor or something?
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Just background. Do I give those sort of vibes? A
little bit, yeah. Priest-y vibes?
Speaker 4 (01:19):
Maris Brother.
Speaker 6 (01:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Maris Brother?
Speaker 5 (01:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Oh, man.
Speaker 5 (01:24):
I've always thought you and I would be great Maris
Brothers comedy duet.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Funnily enough, Johnny, I've always felt like I'd be a
very good priest.
Speaker 4 (01:30):
Okay, two words, season five.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Season five, okay.
Speaker 7 (01:34):
Your time to shine, James.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Sounds good. Now, we've got you legends in here because
we want to talk about your new film, Mum, I'm
Alien Pregnant, which is going to be released tomorrow night,
I believe. Yes.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Can I just correct you on that? It's Help, Mum,
I'm Alien Pregnant.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
No, it's not. No, it's not.
Speaker 6 (01:50):
Johnny.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Has it changed?
Speaker 4 (01:51):
No, it's always just been Mum.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
I told you.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
I've got the information.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
No, you don't.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
There's nothing. I've got the press release here.
Speaker 7 (02:00):
Yes, read it, please.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Can you give us the facts, please, Keezy?
Speaker 4 (02:03):
Mum, I'm alien, pregnant, a new sci-fi comedy from Kiwi writing,
directing duo Thunder Lips.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
Sean Wallace and Jordan Mark-Windsor.
Speaker 7 (02:11):
Correct.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Okay, well, I'll be going into litigation.
Speaker 5 (02:14):
Because I thought it was Help My Mammalian Pregnant that
changed it after I signed the contract.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
Well, I heard you talking to Jackie before you came in,
and maybe she should deal with the admin, because she
said she's got all the details.
Speaker 7 (02:25):
Well, Johnny said, to be honest, Johnny said, have you
got all the details?
Speaker 4 (02:28):
I said no.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Not really. Well, talk to us about the film, because
Mogi and I were just watching a little clip of
it just before. It looks very confronting. Ah, okay. But brilliant.
Speaker 7 (02:38):
Let's break that down. Let's drill into that.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
Let's drill into that.
Speaker 7 (02:41):
Okay, I'm going to start with a long anecdote, okay?
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Okay.
Speaker 6 (02:46):
No, no, no.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
I'm going to make it short.
Speaker 7 (02:48):
Confronting.
Speaker 6 (02:48):
No, no, no.
Speaker 7 (02:49):
I don't want people to think like that. It is a,
I would say, hilarious comedy, first and foremost.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Yes.
Speaker 7 (02:55):
Yes, it has a little bit of alien penis stuff
in it. Yes, it's a little bit sci-fi. Don't be
put off, though.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Oh, I wasn't.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
No, no, no.
Speaker 7 (03:02):
I know you love your confronting stuff. But, okay, long anecdote.
My parents, mid-70s, they went to this film.
Speaker 4 (03:10):
Beforehand, I called them.
Speaker 7 (03:11):
I said, hey, thanks for going to the film. They said, yeah,
it doesn't really look like our thing, sci-fi and stuff,
but we'll go because you're in it, Jackie. I called
them afterwards.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
They loved it. Yes.
Speaker 7 (03:20):
They loved it because they found it really funny, a
great kind of family thing. Then my daughter, 19 years old.
went with her boyfriend in Wellington at the embassy.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
They loved it.
Speaker 7 (03:29):
So I'm pitching this as not confronting. I'm pitching this
as a warm, hilarious, kind of sci-fi, but kind of
not really, family comedy.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
That's what I'm hearing. From grandkids to grandparents across the
divide of ages, everybody loves Mum, I'm Alien Pregnant. And
we were just, I watched the first half an hour.
I sort of forgot you were coming in. I was
meant to watch it before you came. So I got
through half an hour of it. It's a hell of
a cold open, 20 minutes. And what you're dealing with
in different scenes is a young lady who lives with
(04:03):
her mother, played by Yvette Parsons. They hate each other.
And then there's you, Jackie, and you've got a son
who may or may not be the result. No, they're
very against each other. They're combative. It's a combative relationship.
Speaker 7 (04:16):
I would say they are combative.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
At the start.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
And then, Jackie, you've had a son who may or
may not be as a result of a dalliance, an
affair that you have had with an alien.
Speaker 7 (04:27):
I would say, not that I did not get a
backstory printed out, but I would say I was definitely
abducted by aliens. And I would definitely say.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Prequel.
Speaker 7 (04:37):
I'm thinking prequel.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
So you know what I mean?
Speaker 7 (04:39):
Because I want to see that movie.
Speaker 6 (04:41):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
And they're very horny, both of these youngsters.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
And by the time you get to the sex scene,
and the sex scene is explicit, hilarious, and magnificent. It's
kind of in the style of your old school splattery
horror things. I'm assuming the obvious comparisons have been made
to Peter Jackson's Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles, that sort
of thing.
Speaker 6 (05:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
We're not dealing with a horror film.
Speaker 5 (05:03):
No.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
It's got a bit of splatter and a bit of
sexy goo.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Blue goo.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Sexy goo.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
Sexy goo.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Sexy goo is a good word. Well, that is the
part I saw was the sexy goo.
Speaker 7 (05:11):
It's the sexy goo.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Yes.
Speaker 7 (05:13):
I mean, it is a sex scene and it is explicit,
but they don't touch each other.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
No, they don't.
Speaker 7 (05:17):
So it's not one of those, I don't want people
sitting in their cars listening to this thinking, oh, my gosh, oh,
my gosh. You know, it's naturalism and stuff. It's goofy
as hell.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. And also, if you are into sex scenes.
Absolutely still go. Even though Jackie's talking it down, it's
still worth going. That's for the admission price alone. Oh, yeah.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
Because you don't want people sitting in their cars that
love sex scenes being like.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Oh, it sounds like a sex scene.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Oh, no, it's a fantastic sex scene.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
It's magnificent.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
It's one of the greats.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
One of the greats.
Speaker 5 (05:44):
It's actually about, the whole film's about going to the
hospital to get some answers and trying to get people
to listen to you and the system not listening.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
They don't listen to the....
Speaker 2 (05:57):
The patience.
Speaker 7 (05:58):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
The patience, yeah.
Speaker 7 (05:59):
That is true, especially your character, Johnny.
Speaker 5 (06:01):
Yes, I play the, you know, classic sort of doctor
who doesn't listen and humours her.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Yeah, deeply annoying.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yes.
Speaker 7 (06:09):
I'm good at that.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
Yeah, but it is.
Speaker 7 (06:13):
It is about, you know, under all of the kind
of the crazy comedy and the sexy goo, it is
about a woman, I think. It's about a woman who's
trying to, you know, have agency over her own, you know, pregnancy.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Yeah. There we go.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (06:28):
The Hauraki Big Show, weekdays from 4 on Radio Hauraki.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Oh, g'day, Matt. Oh, hi, mate. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (06:36):
Look, if you want the chance to win all our
on-air competitions and stuff and get amongst the live conversation,
tune in to the Hauraki Big Show, four to seven
weekdays on Radio Hauraki and iHeartRadio.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
The Hauraki Big Show podcast.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
We've got the stars of the movie, Mum, I'm Alien, Pregnant,
in the studio with us, Jackie Van Beek and Johnny Buffett.
Some of the stars, can I put.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
It that way?
Speaker 5 (07:05):
Jackie Van Beek, definitely a star. Yvette Parsons, the wonderful genius,
comic genius.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
She's brilliant. She's a star.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
Hannah Lynch, superstar.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
Yeah, she's incredible. So, Tim, when did you guys actually,
when was this actually filmed? Because I understand it's being
released tomorrow night.
Speaker 7 (07:20):
It is in cinemas tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (07:22):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
That is right.
Speaker 7 (07:23):
When it was filmed, I would say recent past. I'm
not good with timelines, Johnny.
Speaker 6 (07:27):
You've got a gas hammer.
Speaker 7 (07:28):
Is it a year ago? A year and a half?
We were in Sundance in January and it was finished
by then because I saw it on screen.
Speaker 5 (07:33):
Yes.
Speaker 7 (07:33):
That was a blast. What are you going to say?
Should we say 18 months ago? We don't know.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
It takes a while to get it to air, doesn't it?
Speaker 4 (07:40):
What's the difference?
Speaker 1 (07:41):
Yeah, it doesn't really matter, does it?
Speaker 3 (07:42):
It takes a long time to make a film.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
And when you watched it, how are you, Jackie, for
watching yourself on the screen? Absolutely love it. You love it?
Speaker 7 (07:51):
I love, I just love watching myself thinking, what would
I do differently?
Speaker 4 (07:55):
Especially the first time through.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
No, first time through.
Speaker 4 (07:57):
Oh, my God. There's wonderful mystery.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
Wow, wow, wow, wow. I'm yelling out from the audience.
Speaker 6 (08:02):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
No, to be honest, look, I don't mind it.
Speaker 7 (08:10):
I'm so used to it now because I direct so
much as well, and I write and direct my own stuff,
and I'm in the edit suite looking at myself all day.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
All the time, yes.
Speaker 7 (08:18):
I mean, it's a very small, insular life. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Well, you kind of.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Do, though.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
You kind of get over yourself after a while. You
know what I mean? I remember when I first started
filming stuff, I was like, oh, my God, that's horrendously bad.
And then it was like, oh, it's fine. It'll do.
How do you find looking at yourself, Johnny?
Speaker 3 (08:36):
I hate it.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Yeah, it's like.
Speaker 5 (08:38):
It's like I think I'm 26 and I look at.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
The screen and go, oh, no.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
Is that what I looked like?
Speaker 4 (08:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
I thought they put makeup on me. Why didn't they
put makeup on me? We did.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
This is as good as it gets.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Give yourself a year. Make something. Give it a year.
Look at it again and you see all the nice
things that you did.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
Jase, do you ever watch Broken Wood back and think, shit, yeah,
nailed that?
Speaker 5 (09:05):
Um.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
Yeah, sometimes I do, Keith. Do you?
Speaker 4 (09:07):
Yeah, sure you do.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Sometimes I do.
Speaker 4 (09:10):
Jackie Van Beek and Johnny Brough, you guys are in
one of my favourite sitcoms, Educators, made right here in
New Zealand. You've made four seasons of it. Is there
a chance of another season? There is a chance.
Speaker 5 (09:21):
Oh, really?
Speaker 4 (09:21):
There is a chance.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Because you heard the Keezy story.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Oh, yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
Desperately. He thought he was on it.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
And then it didn't happen.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
We had it lined up that you two, I think,
were going to be dog handlers.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Dog handlers.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
If I remember. And then, as is often the case
with educators.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
There was a late change to the schedule.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
Which ruled them out.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (09:41):
Because I think what happened was it was the night
before I was supposed– it was two nights before I
was supposed to shoot, and then they text me that
night saying, hey, you ready for tomorrow? 6 a.m. And
I couldn't come in a day earlier. And so I
missed out, which I was gutted about.
Speaker 7 (09:55):
Well, you know, as I've said, season five. You know,
there's nothing confirmed, but there's a lot of people asking
me down at the local Woolworths.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Yes.
Speaker 7 (10:04):
I do get asked about the show a lot. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
So there's an appetite for it.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
I get all my ideas standing in line at a
cafe and someone will tap me on the shoulder and go,
love educators.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Got any ideas? And they tell me stuff.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
We rip off a lot of people's stories.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Just in regards to that show, there's a lot of
improvisation going on, isn't there, really?
Speaker 3 (10:23):
The whole thing is improvised.
Speaker 7 (10:26):
So we all, as actors, we all, as the core cast,
we all pitch our own storylines for our own characters
to Jesse.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
Great.
Speaker 7 (10:33):
And then Jesse kind of filters through them, throws away
the ones that aren't going to work so well, and then, yeah,
and then we just turn up on the day and
we improvise our way through the scenes. Jesse kind of.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
Maps it all out.
Speaker 7 (10:43):
He spends like a month mapping it all out.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
Is that a nightmare to cut? Afterwards?
Speaker 7 (10:47):
It's not a nightmare, but it's a long edit.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (10:50):
It's a long, long edit.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
Because every take would be different, wouldn't it? There's a
lot of.
Speaker 3 (10:54):
Cameras in there.
Speaker 7 (10:54):
We definitely, yeah, there's a lot of cameras, but we
definitely hone in on a scene. Like, it'll start super loose.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (11:00):
And, you know, and off and a bit shit.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (11:03):
And then Jesse will kind of go, oh, don't worry
about saying all that other stuff, but just start from
this bit, because that bit's quite interesting, and talk more about, like,
talk more about the dog taking that piss behind the
park bench. And so then we'll, like, do that. And
then once we've got something fun, then we'll just cover
off all the different angles.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
Yeah, right, okay.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Because sometimes it takes a little while to find what
it is. You know what I mean? Was there any,
in terms of this movie, was there much improvisation for that?
Were you able to improvise?
Speaker 3 (11:30):
We had a bit of rehearsal before we shot.
Speaker 5 (11:32):
Did you? And you get a few obvious lines kind
of jump to mind and you use them and they.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
Sort of stick.
Speaker 7 (11:38):
Yeah, we got to have a rehearsal process, which was
really fun, just to get everything up on its feet.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
And.
Speaker 7 (11:43):
But there wasn't a huge amount of improv. Like, they
had a really solid script.
Speaker 5 (11:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (11:48):
And we said the lines, didn't we, Johnny?
Speaker 5 (11:51):
Yeah, like, well, educators, sometimes there's four cameras in the room.
And with this, you've really got to line it up
and light it. And it's, you know, getting everyone in
the same spot and lit and ready to roll is
a lot. So you can't muck about, you know.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
Yeah, Jase. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (12:08):
Yeah, Jase.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
Yeah, sorry, team.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Shocking from you, Jase.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
I apologise, everyone. Hey, well, go and see it. Mum,
I'm alien pregnant.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
No, it's help, Mum. No, it's not.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
No, it's Mum. It's hello, Mum.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Look, Mum, I'm alien pregnant.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Look, I'm alien pregnant. In all local cinemas, I'm imagining.
Speaker 4 (12:26):
Yes, nationwide. The Hauraki Big Show with Jase, Mike and Keezy.
Tune in weekdays at four on Radio Hauraki.
