The Second Sleep by Robert Harris. Brilliant author of books like Fatherland and An Officer and a Spy – he always writes about power in one form or another. This is an oddity – it’s an historical novel, set in 1468, but also 800 years in the future, after there has been a technological apocalypse on the planet and we’re all thrust back into the dark ages with, shock, horror, no electronic devices! A young priest turns up to a small village to take the funeral of a much older priest – and finds that the dead man had been collecting all sorts of heretical items – things from before the Apocalypse (such as an item with an apple logo on it with a bite mark taken out of the SIDE). The Invisible Load by Dr Libby Weaver. All about stress, which she says is the invisible load we all carry. She tells us in this book how to identify the signs of it.
