table a twenty two seventeen extra time win over the
Hurricanes in Hamilton last night.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Sor right out mackenzie gets the tides down, touts down
by water.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
He's tagging.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
He tagging the guy.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Hit the drive. Hit the drive that tasts the cut,
It that takes the cut.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
It the DT the dve.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
That tastes the cut.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
It twenty to sevent eight.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Oh game of footy like nothing else.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
I think I just went myself team lead with the call.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Last night, eighty four minutes on the clock, Wallace a
TT reacting quickest when Damien McKenzie's drop goal attempt was
charged by Hurricanes lock Warner Durns. Wallacer TT won the
race to the deflected ball to power over the line
and give the Chiefs a super point victory. Earlier, the
Chiefs had trailed seventeen to ten with time running out
(01:12):
before Leroy Carter broke from inside his own half and
offloaded superbly to replacement Daniel Sinkinson, who went under the
post to score. Daniel Simkinson is with us. What a
night for you, mate. Let's go straight to your try.
You came off the bench seventeen to ten down and
not long after you've arrived you're finishing a length of
the field try.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
So what do you remember most about it? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:36):
I just looked up, say the ball was turned over
for put my head downs, seen bompago and a little
bit a skill from him to get the ball through
and yeah over the right line.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
When you're running in support of a guy like that,
are you calling for the ball or are you just
trusting that he'll give it to you at the right time?
Speaker 4 (01:55):
Ye know, I was screaming pretty loud. I'm glad you
heard me because I think.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
There was an opportunity earlier to he shaped to pass,
didn't he And it actually probably would have been the
wrong time to pass, so so you know, and then
once you got it, just a clear run to the line.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
How is that feeling?
Speaker 4 (02:10):
Oh? It was pretty awesome, Like first first try at
home from the friends and family is pretty special.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
So against your former team as well. Did that add
an extra extra layer to it too?
Speaker 4 (02:22):
Yeah, that was a good one, I know, to get
one up to enjoyed that.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Talk to us about the game as a whole. Obviously
you watched from the bench. When you when you enter
a really physical type contest like that, how challenging is
it to match that intensity straight away once you enter
the game?
Speaker 4 (02:39):
Yeah, like it was a it was a big night day.
Obviously Luky's one hundred of games as well. I was.
We talked about it joiningly. It's one of those games
you can't want to be a part of. And yeah,
watching it from the sideline, it was it was pretty
physical way and the sugred matchups out there. So when
I got on and I had to go do my
job and do I needed to do sort of thing.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
How much warning do you get? How you know? Is
it like just you're on now? When? How? And when
do you sort of find out?
Speaker 4 (03:08):
I sat in there, it was probably sixty seven minutes
and he's like, mate, you're on the seventy So you
had to get up on the stretch of league.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
I don't think you were in the twenty three that
was named earlier in the week. Were you what?
Speaker 2 (03:19):
I know there was a couple of injuries last night.
When did you find out you were in the team?
Speaker 4 (03:23):
Literally in the huddle captain Jone as you mate, you're
on the bench, so had to lock them pretty quick.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Amazing, And it wasn't just the yeah we go on
at seventies, so you think, okay, I've got ten minutes
out here. It's all level after eighty minutes, so as
you're entering extra time, what sort of conversations are going
on in the huddle?
Speaker 4 (03:43):
We just knew how to do the simple things. La,
just look after the ball and just bull phases and
let it work out for us.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Does it feel different knowing that you know you only
need to score one and they only need to score
one with us penalty droppy try? Whatever it is? Is
there an extra kind of I don't know, urgency out
there when everything's on the line for the net scoring play.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Yeah, I guess all the boys are on their toes
like you know. It's it's a big moment. And it
was a big howling wind't coming through as well, so
we knew it was going to be tough to get
out of our own half. But when we were down there,
we just knew we had to take every moment when
it comes comes us.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Did it feel chaotic out there during during Golden point?
Or was it still did you feel still pretty structured?
Speaker 4 (04:29):
No, I think it was. There was a good comers
throughout the teammate. I just comeing the and the chaos
it was. It was good.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
So take us to the final play. Then you're set
up obviously for the drop goal. What what was your
view of it as as Damien had to kick charged
and then and then the ball flow up into there
because from memory you went that far away from from
Wallace when he caught it.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
Yeah, I was actually standing right behind Wally and I'd
seen Demo line it up and then obviously ricochetted seeing
Wally just take off. I was trying to keep up
with them, but when I see them go over the line,
it was pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Yeah, I bet it was celebrations good.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
I know it's you know, it's only one game, but
you know, a battle like that top of the table,
you know, do you do do you physically and consciously
take the chance to enjoy wins like that?
Speaker 4 (05:16):
Yeah? Definitely, Like obviously it's good, good chance to connect
off the game for the boys and celebrate the milestone
for Luki and what a good game it was. So yeah,
definitely had a few quite bad.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
I bet I bet your opportunities have been a bit
limited this season, Daniel, So how do you how do
you stay ready? How do you make sure that when
the opportunity does come that you are are fully prepared
for it.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
I just keeps showing up week two week. Just take
every day as it comes. And yeah, when they when
they say it to your turn, just go there and
do the best.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
And yeah, it's a pretty stacked back line in the
Chiefs country too, isn't it?
Speaker 3 (05:54):
So is it?
Speaker 2 (05:55):
How do you how have you found it week to week?
Obviously you're at the Hurricanes the last couple of years. Yeah,
they're obviously a fairly stacked team as well. What's the
what's the Chiefs environment like sort of week to week?
Speaker 4 (06:06):
Yeah, it's awesome. We'd like to touch on. We've got
some pretty awesome outside backs and just the whole backlone.
We're all real competitive, so training each days, it's good
for helping each other and on shops one. Doesn't it?
Speaker 3 (06:20):
Absolutely? Yep? Absolutely it does.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
And do you take perhaps more from winning a game
like that, you know, so in such tight circumstances than
perhaps a win over the over one last week when
you put sixty on them and you bought forty on
the war retars the week before that. Do you actually
feel like you take more out of a win like
last night's one?
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Yeah, Obviously it's a big, big matchup against the Canes.
We knew you knew it was going to be tough,
so winning by two, three four points wins a win.
So take that and move forward next week with our blearnings.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
I know you're only new to the environment, but you
know this is a Chiefs team that has made the
last three Grand finals and hasn't managed to win one
coming in. Do you sense any any sort of scars
from that from the players who have been there in
the last three years and haven't quite been able to
get the job done.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
Obviously, there's he's going to be a bit of hurt
there in a few quarter finals down for Canes and
still nice to be a part of. But it's also
a good good motivation like we be shure peach day
one to you know, not go through that feeling again,
I guess. So, yeah, he's always going to be there,
butter hurt.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
And after the game, I mean, like I say, I
know you're close with a few guys on the Hurricanes
team what's it like afterwards? Do you you know, do
you do you sort of compare, compare war stories and
and and sort of you know, catch up. I know
it's very very intense between the white lines, but what's
it like afterwards?
Speaker 4 (07:50):
That's still well quite for all the boys and coaches
as well. I'm always going to be hopeful for the
Hurricanes are they gave me my first shot. So being
able to see see the boys after the game and
share a beers pretty special.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Good stuff.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
And from here, you know, five games to go in
the season. I guess personally, you'll just wait for more
opportunities when and if they come along. As that kind
of your mindset moving into the last month or so
of the season.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
Yeah, pretty much. He just lock them for the next
show and do what's needed.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
Did you get a few messages on your phone last night?
Speaker 4 (08:26):
Yeah? I got a few things. I think my auntie
had a few too many ones.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
That's great, a nothing wrong with family enjoying a moment
like that, mate, bloody brilliant. All right, Hey, good, good
to chat make congrets on the win last night. Enjoyed
the week as you worked towards the draw next up?
Speaker 4 (08:43):
Awesome? Thank you?
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Very much, Thank you very much, Daniel.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Daniel Simkinson there understated after his try last night which
leveled things up at seventeen all and then the super point.
