I'm Jason Pine. The show put together and produced by
Andy McDonald. We're talking sport with you until three. What
a Saturday night. The Warriors back to back and up
to second on the NRL Ladder again after a twenty
eight twenty win over the Titans. One of their new boys,

(01:14):
a Lafiana can Pereira, is with us after one after
his two tries against his former side. That must have
been nice. And speaking of scoring against your former side.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
Ten out all for the Chiefs.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
They've got numbers down the left wing.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Tata Tata on the inside.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
Tanta's still going Tarakatsi.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
Oh, what a bore, What a bore? Sinkings then sinkings
and scowls under the place.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Yeah. Chiefs winger Daniel Sinkinson did that last night as well,
helping the Chiefs to a super point win over the Hurricanes.
They've gone back to the top of the Super Rugby ladder.
Daniel Sinkinson standing by the chat to us. Keen for
your thoughts as well. Fans of both sides. Hurricanes fans
like myself typically bullish about it all, aren't we Chiefs fans. Honestly,

(01:57):
I don't know. Maybe it's just the laid back nature
or the more reserved nature of those from the from
the Chiefs catchment. You never wan's to rarely beat your
chests too much, although there was a lot of excitement
in the coaching box last night and in the crowd too.
But Chiefs fans keen to hear from you and what
what is going on with the Crusaders.

Speaker 5 (02:19):
The Crusaders are going to lose two in a row.
The two to Australia is not good for the Crusaders.
The Crusaders have gone down for the second week running
fifty one twenty six.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Crazy stuff. It's not exactly the ideal preparation for opening
their new stadium next week is at back to back
losses in Australia. I'm sure they'll be fine. I'm sure
they'll come home and beat the Waratars. First game at
one New Zealand Stadium at Takaha on Friday Night, Super
Rugby focused us out pick up on anything you want
to ken to open the lines on the entire Super

(02:54):

Guy Harrison is his name. When he was three years old,
his parents were told he would never walk, would never talk,
would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

(03:16):
He recently won New Zealand's All Abilities Golf Championship and
is headed to the UK soon to play in a
big tournament over there. It is quite the inspiring story.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
Ten past midday, the big names and the big calls
on your home of sport Weekend Sport with Jason Vine
News Talks.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Heab the Chiefs have moved to the top of the
Super Rugby table a twenty two seventeen extra time win
over the Hurricanes in Hamilton last night.

Speaker 6 (04:04):
All right out McKenzie, get the tides down, Todd's down
by water.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
I've tagging hot dag. The guy had the drive, had
the drive, that daste that cut it, That daks that
got it, the DT the dive, that taser cut it.
Twenty to seven, eight ah, game of footy like nothing else.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
I think I just went myself.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Team Mead with the call last night, eighty four minutes
on the clock, Wallace a TT reacting quickest when Damien
McKenzie's drop goal attempt was charged by Hurricanes lock Warner
Durns Wallace a Tt won the race to the deflected
ball to power over the line and give the Chiefs
a super point victory. Earlier, the Chiefs had trailed seventeen

(04:53):
ten with time running out before Leroy Carter broke from
inside his own half and offloaded superbly to replacement Daniel Simkinson,
who went under the post to score. Daniel Simkinson is
with us, what a night for you, mate. Let's go
straight to your try. You came off the bench seventeen
to ten down and not long after you've arrived you're

(05:14):
finishing a length of the field try. So what do
you remember most about it? Yeah?

Speaker 7 (05:18):
I just looked up, say the ball was turned over,
so put my head downs. Seen bomp ago and what
a bit of skill from him to get the ball
through and yeah over the right line.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
When you're running in support of a guy like that,
are you calling for the ball or are you just
trusting that he'll give it to you at the right time? Yeah?

Speaker 7 (05:38):
No, I was screaming pretty loud. I'm glad you heard
me because I.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Think there was an opportunity earlier to he shaped to pass,
didn't he And it actually probably would have been the
wrong time to pass. So so you know, and then
once you got it, just a clear run to the
line house that feeling.

Speaker 7 (05:53):
Oh it was pretty awesome, Like first first try at
home from the friends and family is pretty special.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
So against your former team as well, did that add
an extra extra layer to it too?

Speaker 7 (06:05):
Yeah, that was a good one. You get one up
to enjoyed that.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Talk to us about the game as a whole. Obviously
you watched from the bench. When you when you enter
a really physical type contest like that, how challenging is
it to match that intensity straight away once you enter
the game.

Speaker 8 (06:21):
Yeah, like it was.

Speaker 7 (06:22):
It was a big night day obviously Luky's one hundred
of games as well. Was We talked about it duringly.
It's one of those games you can't want to be
a part of. And yeah, watching it from the sideline,
it was it was pretty physical way and the sugred
matchups out there. So when I got on and I
just had to go do my job and do I
needed to do sort of thing.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
How much warning do you get? How you know? Is
it like just you're on now?

Speaker 7 (06:47):
When?

Speaker 2 (06:47):
How and when do you sort of find out?

Speaker 7 (06:50):
I sitting there it was probably sixty seven minutes and
He's like, mate, you're on the seventy, so you had
to get up in the stretch the league.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
I don't think you were in the twenty three that
was named earlier in the week. Were you what? I
know there was a couple of injuries last night. When
did you find out you were in the team?

Speaker 7 (07:06):
Literally in the huddle captain learning his way? You mate,
you're on the bench. So yeah, had to lock on
pretty quick.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Amazing And it wasn't just the yeah we go on
at seventies, so you think, ok, I've got ten minutes
out here. It's all level after eighty minutes. So as
you're entering extra time, what sort of conversations are going
on in the huddle?

Speaker 7 (07:26):
We just knew how to do the simple things. Are
they just look after the ball and just bull phases
and let it work out for us?

Speaker 2 (07:35):
Does it feel different knowing that you know, you only
need to score one and they only need to score
one with us penalty, drop a try, whatever it is?
Is there an extra kind of I don't know, urgency
out there when everything's on the line for the next
scoring play.

Speaker 7 (07:51):
Yeah, I guess all the boys are on their toes.
They like, you know, it's it's a big moment and
there was a big howling wind coming through as well,
so we knew it was going to be tough to
get out of our own half. But when we were
down there, we just knew where to take every moment
when it comes comes to us.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Did it feel chaotic out there during during Golden Point
or was it still did you feel still pretty structured?

Speaker 7 (08:12):
No, I think it was. There was a good comers
throughout the teammate. I just come in and the chaos
it was. It was good.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
So take us to the final play. Then you're set
up obviously for the drop goal. What what was your
view of it is? As Damien had to kick charged
and then and then the ball flow up into the
air because from memory you went that far away from
from Wallace when he caught it.

Speaker 7 (08:33):
Yeah, I was actually standing right behind Wally and I'd
seen Demo line it up and then obviously ricochetted seeing
while he just take off trying to keep up with them.
But when I see them go over the line, it
was pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
Yeah, I bet it was. Celebration is good. I know
it's you know, it's only one game, but you know
a battle like that top of the table. You know,
do you do do you physically and consciously take the
chance to enjoy wins like that?

Speaker 9 (08:59):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (08:59):
Definitely, Like obviously good good chance to connect off the
game for the boys and celebrate the milestone for Luki
and what good game it was. So yeah, definitely had
a few quite bad.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
I bet, I bet your opportunities have been a bit
limited this season, Daniel, So how do you how do
you stay ready? How do you make sure that when
the opportunity does come that you are are fully prepared
for it.

Speaker 7 (09:20):
It just keeps showing up week to week. Just take
every day as it comes. And yeah, when they when
they say it to your turn, just go there and
do best.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
And yeah, it's a pretty stacked back line in the
Chiefs country too, isn't it?

Speaker 10 (09:36):
So is it?

Speaker 2 (09:37):
How do you how have you found it week to week?
Obviously you're at the Hurricanes the last couple of years. Yeah,
they're obviously a fairly stacked team as well. What's the
what's the Chiefs environment like sort of week to week?

Speaker 7 (09:49):
Yeah, it's awesome. We'd like to touch on. We've got
some pretty awesome outside backs and just the whole back line.
We're all real competitive, so training each day is it's
good for helping each other and iron shop sign, doesn't it?

Speaker 2 (10:02):
Absolutely? Yep, absolutely it does. And do you take perhaps
more from winning a game like that, you know, so
in such tight circumstances than perhaps a win over the
over one last week when you put sixty on them
and you bought forty on the Warrior Tars the week
before that? Do you actually feel like you take more
out of a win like last night's win.

Speaker 9 (10:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (10:23):
Obviously it's a big, big matchup against the Canes. Knew
it was going to be tough, so winning by two,
three four points wins a win. So take that and
move forward next week with our leanings.

Speaker 2 (10:36):
I know you're only new to the environment, but you
know this is a Chiefs team that has made the
last three Grand finals and hasn't managed to win one
coming in. Do you sense any sort of scars from
that from the players who have been there in the
last three years and haven't quite been able to get
the job done.

Speaker 7 (10:53):
Obviously there's he's going to be a bit of hurt there.
I was in a few quarterfinals down for Canes and
still mighte have been a part of But it's also
a good good motivation. Likely you show up each day
one into you know, not go through that feeling again.
I guess.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
So, yeah, he's always going to be there, but a
hurt and after the game, I mean, like I say,
I know you're close with a few guys and the
Hurricanes team. What's it like afterwards? Do you you know,
do you do you sort of compare, compare war stories
and and and sort of you know, catch up. I
know it's very very intense between the one lines, but

(11:30):
what's it like afterwards?

Speaker 7 (11:33):
That's still well, I'm quite all the boys and coaches
as well. I'm always going to be goateful for the
Hurricanes are they gave me my first shot. So being
able to see see the boys after the game and
share a beers pretty special.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
Good stuff. And from here, you know, five games to
go in the season, I guess personally, you you'll just
wait for more opportunities when and if they come along.
As that kind of your mindset moving into the last
month or so other season, Yeah.

Speaker 7 (12:00):
Pretty much, so just lock them for the next few
and do what's needed.

Speaker 2 (12:05):
Do you get few messages on your phone last night?

Speaker 11 (12:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (12:09):
I got a few things. He had a few so
many ones.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
That's great. Anhing wrong with family enjoying a moment like that, mate,
bloody brilliant. All right, hey, good, good the chat May
congrats on the win last night. Enjoyed the week as
you worked toward to the drawer next up. Awesome, Thank
you very much, Thank you very much, Daniel. Daniel Simkinson
there understated after his try last night which leveled things
up at seventeen all and then the super point. So

(12:39):
many texts coming through, but let's let's have a eight
hundred and eighty ten eighty nine two ninety two is
the text line. But like I say, they've just been
flooding in during the chat with Daniel about all sorts
of things. One thing I just want to I was
gonna say address that sounds a bit serious. People are saying,
why are the chief top of the table. Why is
it the Chiefs the top when the Hurricanes have the

(12:59):
same number of points and have a better points differential.
They're both on thirty one points. Surely the Hurricanes the
better points differential should be, should still be top of
the table. I mean, it doesn't really matter, it doesn't,
but the reason doesn't matter. In late April, that's what
I'm saying. The reason is that the first separator is
number of wins. Those are the tie breakers are number

(13:22):
of wins, then points differential, then most tries try differential,
and then a coin toss. So that's obviously once we
get to the end of the season we have to
work out, you know, table position. But the reason is
that the Chiefs have now won seven times, the Hurricanes
have won six times, albeit having played one fewer match.

(13:42):
That is why the Chiefs are top thirty one points,
Hurricanes thirty one, Blues twenty nine, Brumbies twenty five Reds
twenty two Crusaders. I don't want to dwell on the
Crusaders necessarily, let's celebrate the Chiefs a little bit and
Hurricanes fans what has this done to your optimism? But
if you want to talk Crusaders, I'm fine with that.
I'm fine with that. But yeah, anything you want to

(14:04):
pick up on eight hundred and eighty in eighty.

Speaker 12 (14:08):
Hello, Mark Goody, how are you?

Speaker 2 (14:11):
I'm okay, Mark, I'm okay. Are you a bit nervous
about the opening of your new stadium? With the Crusaders
going back to back losing in Australia.

Speaker 12 (14:22):
We're unbeaten at the moment of the new stadium.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
So yunits, well, I think it's I think it should
be okay next week. I think you should be okay.

Speaker 12 (14:34):
Three thousand people they expecting on Friday night, so pay
just metic you know, going to this super you know,
super Round, So that's just going to be fantastic. The
Cosda's still got injuries to you know, but they'll be.

Speaker 13 (14:50):
Then.

Speaker 12 (14:50):
It's about four four home games to go in new stadium,
so a year we'll get them.

Speaker 14 (14:56):
We'll be there.

Speaker 15 (14:57):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
Not that I'm not that I'm worried about the Crusaders
because they're not my team, Mark, but I'm a bit
worried for you with Will Jordan not there. I remember
a couple of years ago Will Jordan wasn't there and
a couple of others as well, But he missed the
entire twenty twenty four season, didn't he And that didn't
end particularly well for you. So yeah, are you worried

(15:18):
about him not being there?

Speaker 9 (15:19):
No, No, he'll come right, he'll be he'll be in.
He'll be there in the finals, you know, coming into
the finals. But yeah, I'm looking forward to next weekend.
Pony go to Crusaders. It'll be like Christmas coming up
and Christmas Day on Friday game day, so yeah, I'll.

Speaker 12 (15:37):
Be looking forward to seeing the again. Pony and Crotch
next Saiday afternoon.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
So you go, I'm looking forward to that too.

Speaker 10 (15:44):
Mark.

Speaker 2 (15:44):
I'm very much looking forward to seeing you next weekend. Yep,
just back. I was in christ Yetch over the weekend,
back today, but back down there for the for for
next weekend and the opening of one New Zealand study
at Taka. We're going to bring you the show from
from Robbie's Litchfield on Saturday. Now, if you want to
join us, please pop in. But they are asking if

(16:04):
you want to spend some time there on set to
get in touch and book a table. Of course, they'll
be open Friday night as well ahead of the first
game Crusader's Warratas and then a couple of games on
Sunday as well, So we'll broadcast from Robbie's on Saturday
and from the stadium on Sunday. Gee, looking forward to
being down there. Even being down there over the last
couple of days I was down for Phoenix. Just the
vibe around the place. As I said yesterday on the

(16:25):
show was so cool. Everybody very much looking forward to it.
Mussy's Piney night Dwell on the Crusaders made I'm enjoying it.
Another one here now put the boots into the cruiser Pardahama.

Speaker 16 (16:38):
Hello was an easy punt last night on the Western
Force two Piney bed An adjusted up.

Speaker 13 (16:47):
Love it.

Speaker 12 (16:48):
I'll tell you what.

Speaker 17 (16:50):
I was blown up de lux when O'Keefe didn't call
that holding on penalty against the.

Speaker 16 (16:56):
Mac and that sort of last play since he called
Callum Harkins for the same thing.

Speaker 17 (17:01):
I don't know about half a night before, but I'm
more chilled out now and on reflection, I'm still pretty
pretty positive the the Canes controlled that game so well.

Speaker 16 (17:15):
Basically to the end, like they were pretty dominant, just
not on the scoreboard.

Speaker 17 (17:19):
And I think I don't know if you've seening the socials,
but there's a little the camera got into the boys
huddle and Shields and Billy Propter were talking, and they
were talking positive, and I don't know, you didn't want
to lose those right, especially where not, like I said,
you controlled the game.

Speaker 14 (17:38):
But there's enough there too.

Speaker 12 (17:41):
These boys have got the stills.

Speaker 18 (17:43):
Do the job, and.

Speaker 17 (17:45):
The loss it's not bad loss, if you know what
I mean, because it all hurt, and it all hurt
the next time. I don't know if we've got the Chiefs.
I assume we've got the Chiefs, that the captain it
will hurt when they come to town too.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
Yeah, we haven't. Actually no, there's yeah, from what I
can see, unless I've unless I've completely misread the drawer,
they don't. They don't. They don't meet again these two
this season, so.

Speaker 7 (18:12):
Go on.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
Yeah, absolutely, And like you say, men, I think I
think you're right. It wasn't as though they were smashed.
In fact, there's a text hero, I just want to
reach you from a Chiefs fan. Great win last night
by the Chiefs is Marco. But even as the most
one eyed Chiefs fan, I can say we weren't the
best team on the field last night, but they stuck
in there, completed a smash and grab victory. Fingers crossed

(18:33):
the same two teams competing in the Grand finally a
couple of months. Yeah, I'd much rather lose to a
team in mid April than at the back end of May.

Speaker 14 (18:43):
Exactly.

Speaker 17 (18:43):
And you know that all flowed there wasn't on.

Speaker 16 (18:46):
Uh, you're under your posts, but were still loving the Canes.
I think a couple of months ago after the Phoenix Derby,
I said.

Speaker 14 (18:56):
We'll see that, we'll get them in the final.

Speaker 17 (18:58):
Okay, that didn't work out, but you know we had
a good little run and do not We'll do that
with the Chiefs.

Speaker 2 (19:02):
Piny, good on you, a padaham. I always loved Jenity mate,
thanks for calling it twelve twenty five. Got to get
a breakaway, Bill and Brent, please hold with you right
after this speed line there if you want to jump
aboard and talk some super rugby any way, shape or
form you'd like. Chiefs fans really keen to hear from you,
really keen to hear from your Chiefs fans? Is it
going to be fourth time? Lucky for you? Did last
night give you that hope? Even though as Marco just

(19:24):
said on text, it wasn't a dominant victory. It was
a victory and under lease, you've only got to win
these games, particularly when you get to finals time. Eight
hundred and eighty ten eighty is our number. Back in
the mow.

Speaker 1 (19:34):
The biggest names in sport talk to Final Weekend Sport
with Jason Pain News Talks at.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
Be News Talks at Being Weekend Sport twelve twenty nine,
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty talking super rugby. This
our Bill, thanks for holding good afternoon.

Speaker 18 (19:49):
You know how are you going good?

Speaker 2 (19:50):
Thank you?

Speaker 7 (19:51):
Bill.

Speaker 18 (19:51):
I was extremely disappointed last night. There's one principle in rugby.
You can't win the game without the ball. Why the
heck the Hurricanes booted the ball in those last ten minutes.
It's bloody ridiculous.

Speaker 14 (20:09):
They needed to.

Speaker 18 (20:10):
Hang on to it and take their chances. Absolutely stupid
decision to kick the blessed ball.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
Yeah, I think hindsight's a wonderful thing, Bill, But as
you say that, you know you often you often you
often hear fans like you say, look, if you've got
the ball, the other team doesn't have it. That severely
limits their scoring opportunities. Ironically enough, it was when they
forced that pass in possession of the ball that Leroy
Carter broke down field and set up Simkinson for the try.

(20:41):
But I totally take your point.

Speaker 18 (20:43):
I accept that. But you know, there's a principle when
you when you're in a game of rugby, a good
captain will recognize he's got to shut you know, there
certain times when you've got to shut the game down,
you're going to start taking those decisions that give you
the best advantage. And we all know that there's there's
always an element of luck because that ball bounces every

(21:06):
which way. You know, you just don't know. So I
was bitterly disappointed because I don't think we deserve to lose.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
Yeah, yeah, Bill, I agree with that, But I don't
think you could unequivocally say the Chiefs were a better side.
I guess ten minutes is a long time to hang
on to the ball. There's a lot to be said
for territory, you know. And you talk to coaches and
I'll tell you, you know, you'd rather the opposition have
the ball down in their twenty two than you have
it in your own twenty two, for example.

Speaker 18 (21:34):
Yeah, but yeah, true. But the other thing that mystified me,
why did he send Royguard off at that point? Why
did they drag Rugard?

Speaker 8 (21:45):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (21:46):
Bill, another very good question. I've long said that I
think if your best players are playing well, leave them on.
There seems to be this this this thing with hookers
and halfbacks in particular, that you have to replace them
at some point, came Roygard. I think is a very
special player, and I would have I would have kept
him out there as well. I get what you're saying.

(22:08):
That's not to say that that was the reason that
the Hurricanes didn't win, but I think you keep your
best players and your game drivers out there. Yeah, there's
a few texts coming through similar to your sentiment, Bill
that that it wasn't necessarily a dominant Chiefs performance. But
you know what, it doesn't matter. They won the game.
From Gunner, I'm glad you've texted Gunneroyds. Enjoy your messages. Condolences, Binney.

(22:31):
I thought the better team lost at the Tron last night.
The Gaines to me, had an almost dominant first half,
very good defense, especially on the line, took their opportunities
to post points. Second half. I thought it was similar
but didn't quite have the knockout blow to my Chiefs
outplayed in the first half, they showed grit and ticker
in the second, and we'll call it a lucky win,

(22:52):
especially with a favorable last minute decision on d Mac
an absolute Burglar's victory. Nice one, Gunner. Good to hear
from you, mate, Brent Hi, Hey.

Speaker 12 (23:01):
Mate, I'm disappointed with you because you should have said
that the odds has given us two see you and
the Hurricanes are two siventy five. But anyway, it was ring.
You will be happy. It was a real strong, good game.
I'm over the moon because I'm living in Wellington now
and I'm bringing up on Wellington make some half some
wooden ants the phone last night they were at the disappointment.

Speaker 2 (23:23):
Oh look, bred, I will never ignore your call. That
doesn't matter where you're calling from, what the circumstances are,
did you yeah, so, I mean its tense, right, I
mean you you're behind, then you get to seventeen all
I thought that extra time was a bit forantic. I thought,
you know how these guys got gas in the tank?
Still left?

Speaker 12 (23:41):
Yeah, well, I checked the chair beyond site and I thought,
oh ship the pontetty and then I saw they were
head the wind and I said, oh are you Wellington
will do it? Someone who will make a mistake.

Speaker 13 (23:51):
In the barrel.

Speaker 12 (23:52):
Took seventeen minute goal like it once before.

Speaker 7 (23:54):
And a little bit there.

Speaker 12 (23:54):
But yeah, I spoke because I'm actually be in the
weekend on on cour so I can't drink and I'm
disappointed because I want to tear a lot of bees
last night. Well I'll wait till tomorrow because I want
to think eight D because we have the safety rules
of it. And a few of the boys owed me
some money, so I thank god they got up because
the last few minutes I was shaking because I had

(24:15):
a roll of money that I had to pay the
boys out. And now I'm saying, God, they're all just
going to pay me a little bit.

Speaker 2 (24:20):
How good brand, How good mate? That's awesome. So you're
not so have you knocked off?

Speaker 4 (24:25):
Now?

Speaker 2 (24:26):
Are you going to work today? And then knock off?

Speaker 12 (24:28):
Yah? Know I've got I'm on cour so I just
wait around for some calls and there might have to
go out stuff.

Speaker 18 (24:32):
I don't.

Speaker 12 (24:33):
I'm still on Holorada Morrows. I had a few bes
at this pub called the It's called the Hawse and
Hounds in Orbit and Jackson's Street. It's quite nice in Yeah,
I know it.

Speaker 2 (24:44):
I know it, Brent, I know the one. Yes, I
can't suf spend a heck of a lot of time there,
but I know exactly where it is.

Speaker 12 (24:51):
If you turn up on my boy, you be like
I did locals, Brent.

Speaker 2 (24:55):
Mate, I'll tell you what I reckon. We've been need
more than one. We need more than one good to
check to your make congratulations on the win for your
chiefs last night. Just on the on the subject of
celebrations and things like that, Piney says this text. We
are a mature group of eighteen heading to christ Church

(25:16):
for Super Round, looking for an establishment for a controlled
court session. Any ideas eighteen of you a mature group
of eighteen, man, Well, I hope you can. I hope
you can get to where we are. If you're having
a court session. What better place than where we're going
to be at Robbie's Lichfield Courtyard. It's all there in
the name, the new home of Live Sport and christ Church,

(25:37):
great food, cold bear loads at TVs and right next
to one New Zealand Stadium at Taka. We're there between
twelve and three next Saturday. We've got tickets to give
away as well to the games on Saturday and Sunday
if you want to make it down. Look, I'm not
saying you should have your court session during weekend sport.
I'm not sure that that would be entirely the best
idea for the broadcast. But if you're looking for a place,

(26:00):
Robbie's Litchfield Courtyard might be one that you want to
have a look at. Benhime mate, Hi.

Speaker 12 (26:07):
What a fantastic weekend of Super Rugby. I enjoyed the
game's close games, some upsets.

Speaker 18 (26:13):
With the drawer you know, and the force.

Speaker 8 (26:16):
You know.

Speaker 12 (26:16):
It was just And I started the weekend of Super
Rugby off by going to the Blues game, so we've
been to every home game so far, and boy that
was a nail biter. And you would have thought Eden
Park was absolutely packed in that last minute when the
Highlanders were really trying to score to even up the game,
and you know, we were on the edge of our

(26:37):
seats of that and it was just a great night out.
On a slightly negative note, I'm sorry to say I
think Bodenbarrick's passed his prime when I've been watching all
the games and seeing him live actually on the field.
He's a good Super Rugby player, but he's you know,
he'd be a very average test player. Unfortunately, so the

(26:58):
people like Ruben Love and David Mackenzie. I think we
need a blood Ruben Love just looking at the way
he's going, and I think Mac is the top choice
at the moment, just based off Super rugby form. But
I mean that being said, I just TINU need to
get that two cents off my chest. But as far
as Super rugby goes this year, it's just in some

(27:20):
fantastic games from the Australian teams being really competitive finally
and New Zealand as well. So I'm just really enjoying
our rugby.

Speaker 2 (27:32):
Ben, I totally agree. I am too made and Super
rugby can become a bit of a punching bag for
some people who like to put it down and I guess,
you know, speak about the virtues of other sports. I
don't see why we can't love both rugby league and rugby,
and I totally agree with you. I've enjoyed all of
the games I've watched over the weekend. Even though the

(27:54):
Hurricanes lost last night my team, I still enjoyed the
contest the Fiji and drew. As you say, that's one
of the big upsets of the season, going to Canberra
and beating the Brumbys thirty three twenty eight last night.
Not too many teams go to canber and beat the
Brumbies and then out west. The Western Force was just

(28:16):
their third win of the season and their ninth game
over the Crusaders, the reigning champions. Good to here from
your bent. Glad you enjoyed yourself at Eden Park on
Friday night as well. Hey Dominic, how are you get it? Pinny?

Speaker 4 (28:29):
Hell?

Speaker 10 (28:29):
Are yeah?

Speaker 18 (28:30):
Good?

Speaker 2 (28:30):
Thanks mate?

Speaker 4 (28:32):
Good.

Speaker 12 (28:32):
Just a few points to bring up, I mean last night,
this whole weekend has been some brilliant games of not
only Super Rugby but League as well. I mean the
Tigers just losing it to Broncos last night and then
the Warriors coming up on the weekend. It was fantastic.
I suppose Wellington can't have everything made. If the Phoenix
are winning two, then they can't expect the Hurricanes to
always bring it home. A few points that I'd like

(28:53):
to bring up from last night's match with the Hurricanes.
One would be just questioning some of the tactics around,
especially in the first half. What the boys seem to
do aimless kicking into the winds when reserved. The last
few games have been sort of running it out, getting
it to the wingers and making breaks and they seem
to just be caught in the trap of the Chiefs
sort of game plan where they just restricted them, didn't

(29:15):
get didn't see much of the wingers this week. Another
key point would be, again, why in the Golden Points,
why would you take off Roy Guard and bring an
Ari on. I think there's a massive problem for the
Canes if something did happen to Royguard, because there was
a massive drop off there. And again, Calum Harkin had
probably one of the best sheets and breakouts from last

(29:37):
night's game for the Canes and then they took him
off as well and Jonder over or we saw what
happened there when he came on. So maybe a few
questions and tactics that need to be looked at for
the Hurricanes. Also was looking at a couple of after
match commentaries from Dan o'keeith where he says, you know,
he doesn't want to have so much of an impact

(29:57):
in the game or effects key moments. Well, I'm sorry, Pooney,
but at the end of the game, it's seventy eighth
minute or seventy seventh minute, I think Brad Shields and
Billy Propper went over the ball right in front of
the sticks. I feel like that was probably a key
moment where there could have been a penalty steal it.
So maybe just yeah, maybe there's just some consistencies around

(30:18):
the referee not saying that Hurricanes deserved it because they
really didn't put on a performance that they should have
against the Chiefs at home. So yeah, maybe a few
tactics there that need to be.

Speaker 10 (30:28):
Looked at for the boys.

Speaker 2 (30:29):
Oh, great analysis, Dominic Love. This can I just ask
you a question about the two first fives. It felt
to me as though Damien McKenzie outpointed Ruben Love last night,
and that's not a surprise. He's a terrific player. Damien McKenzie,
what did you make of the Battle of the Teens?

Speaker 12 (30:43):
Definitely, yeah, I think yeah. I think the whole Hurricanes batline,
to be fair, just didn't really fire when it needed to.
And I especially I think the Chiefs did really really
well for sort of creating the open play or their
breaks that Damian mackenzie is used to. Definitely looking for
this weekend. I'd have to agree with your previous quarter.
I think Boden Barrats still looks very, very solid as

(31:05):
a super rogud player, but I don't think he's got
enough left to play at least ninety percent of the
game for the All Blacks. Maybe as an impact player
now looking at it, you would definitely think you have
to be McKenzie with maybe a Reuben Love coming off
the bench.

Speaker 2 (31:21):
Good stuff, Dominic. You're still confident, though made about the Hurricanes.
You still think they can go go deep.

Speaker 12 (31:27):
Definitely yet, No, I think there's some good takeaways to that.
I think the loose forwards and Warner do and again
water Dunes probably wasn't utilized as much as we needed to.
I noticed the first probably two or three lineups that
we had, we threw the I think it was Devin
Flanders and you know, they picked us off with some blocks.
I think it was Arkoy that picked him up, and

(31:48):
it was.

Speaker 2 (31:49):
Like we wanna.

Speaker 12 (31:49):
Duns has had probably the biggest impact for lineouts that
the Hurricanes have had over the last however and many matches,
and we only use them about two or three times
that whole game. So again, probably questioning that call, but yeah,
I definitely think the Canes can do it. I'd like
to see instead of maybe Rover coming on, maybe someone
like Riley Higgins coming back into the squad, and then yeah,

(32:12):
maybe looking at the number nine to back up roy
Guards because I definitely don't think an Ari as up
to spec.

Speaker 2 (32:18):
Yeah, Dominic, great, great thoughts. Well well articulated, make good
to check. Call back any time, call back any time. Yeah,
I mean cam Roy Guard. You know there's just daylight
between him and and a lot of halfbacks in New
Zealand and Ardie Jordie ville Yurn, you know, serviceable enough halfbacks.
But the drop off from cam Roy Guard down is unquestionable.

(32:42):
So you do think to yourself, why take him off?
And I know Clark laid Law has on occasion, on
more than one occasion, just left cam Roy Guard out there.
I was used to think, you know, when Aaron Smith
was dominating for the All Blacks, why take him off
with seventy two minutes gone when it's a tight game.

(33:03):
Leave him on a safer one. More the other day
played seventy minutes against the Blues and he said afterwards,
look I can go eighty. If you want me to
go eighty, I can go eighty. You know this is
obviously the way that rugby has played. It's a twenty
three man game, it's not a fifteen man game. Daniel

(33:23):
Sinkinson off the bench last night, providing his impact and
scoring a try which leveled things up. So yeah, there's
Hindsight's always twenty twenty, isn't it. Hindsight is always always
twenty twenty. Couple of texts before we go to a break,
Take some more calls up till one o'clock. Get a
pinte from a chief supporter with lost games against the Crusaders,

(33:45):
even though we dominated them so great, it went the
other way for us this time. You never know what's
going to happen if you stay in the game. It
did show a huge gap between Roy Guard and the
rest and dmac out played love with not as clean ball.
The surprise for me it was Liam Coomb's fabling catching
those high balls under pressure. Best game of Super rugby
this season by far. Thanks Dave, appreciate it. To one

(34:06):
back with more of your calls after this, Oh eight
hundred eighty ten eighty, don't stay on.

Speaker 1 (34:10):
The stonelines, call oh eight hundred eighty ten eighty weekend
sport with Jason Vine.

Speaker 2 (34:16):
News talks. They'd be news talks. They'll be thirteen away
from one back to the line to the moment. Can
I just take a moment though, to mention and to
pay tribute to Lime Hills Rugby Club, about nine k
north of Winton. They are celebrating across the weekend their
club centennial one hundred years. I'm sure the stories have
been told long into both of the last two nights.

(34:39):
Congratulations to lime Hill's rugby club on your centennial. Barbara, Hello, Hello,
how are you good? Thank you?

Speaker 11 (34:50):
Yes, still buzzing from the Chiefs one last night.

Speaker 3 (34:53):
Good on you.

Speaker 11 (34:54):
It pays to stay in the game. What wonderful tries
they scored. You know, they never had two all blacks
in the forwards. They never had two per files. They
never had seen Now they had to reshape the team.
There's a few new players, but I want to put
a plug in for Xavier Row, the half pack who
came on. He never put a foot wrong for the

(35:15):
whole time he was on the field. He never made
a mistake, even though the wind took one ball that
he kicked straight up, came pretty much back down a
little bit of center and he just grabbed it. He
did everything without fluffing a damn thing. And he's always
close to where the ball is.

Speaker 2 (35:31):
He is a very good player, Barbara.

Speaker 7 (35:33):
I totally agree, very good player.

Speaker 11 (35:35):
And I can tell you even though the number one
half back, we know who he is. The commentator on
the rugby never mentioned his name without saying impressive, impressive
or whatever.

Speaker 19 (35:45):
And I never heard.

Speaker 11 (35:47):
Xavier Row's name hardly mentioned by the commentator at any stage,
and I just thought, Xavier Row, you go boy, because
by Crike you need encouragement.

Speaker 2 (35:58):
Good on you, Barbara. I love the passion that you
bring to your calls. Call back anytime the invitation has
always opened. Xavier and Cortez Latimer is a very interesting
little dynamic at the Chiefs, isn't it? Look at who
started most games this year and it's it's about even
now one, two, three, four, five for Row, four for

(36:18):
Ratima and coming off the bench obviously in those other games,
although Ti tord Or Tahure d Angi is there as
well and he's played the part too. It's it's back
to that thing of the of the twenty three man game.
And it's different for the Chiefs when you have two
high quality half backs, in fact three really like that,

(36:40):
you can afford to decide on a game by game
basis what's the best utilization of them. And John I.
Gibbs has clearly decided that sometimes Cortez Latima is his
best starter and Xavier Row will come on and finish
things off or vice versa. And you know when you've
got two high quality nines like that, again, three high

(37:03):
quality nines to utilize, it's a very different situation from
what Clark Laidlaw has. Unfortunately for anybody who plays in
the same team Ascam roy Guard, You're always going to
be compared to him, aren't you? And you know he's
a well he's a generational half back, isn't he. Speaking
of John o' gibbs, just a couple of his thoughts

(37:24):
after last night's win. How much of a team effort
was this from his chiefs last night?

Speaker 20 (37:32):
You would probably have to say fifty when't we lucky
because the twenty three that got the name wasn't twenty
three that took the field either night, pulled them in
yesterday before the captains run and gave them okay, this
is our final team, and then that changed again. So yeah,

(37:55):
it was a fifty fifty guys working really hard and
we had it's a difficult week, just didn't go exactly
to plan. But I think saw tonight you know the
guys have got called on answered the court and some
of them went in the team and have got named

(38:16):
at stane.

Speaker 2 (38:16):
Of the week and next from Johnny Gibbs, the emotions
during the the charge down, the drop goal attempt from
Damien McKenzie and then Wallace a Tt swooping on the
ball and scoring the decisive try.

Speaker 20 (38:29):
Yeah, okay, it's at that stage your spectator too. That's
the reality.

Speaker 4 (38:34):
It's in the dying moments where it's you know, like
you are living in that moment, just like a.

Speaker 20 (38:42):
Spectator does as well. So, yeah, there's heart men stuff,
But I think our satisfaction comes from the quality of
the Hurricanes. You know, the questions that they ask of you,
what it takes to fight for anything against them as
a real tip of the head. So our feeling that

(39:02):
we hit right now is because it's it's a very
good team that we had to go up against, and yeah,
they brought the best out of us, and I think
that's the ultimate tip of the head to them, is
what it took for us.

Speaker 4 (39:21):
And yeah, but we we stuck in it, hung in
there and created a moment and.

Speaker 20 (39:33):
We got on the right side of that moment and
that's reward for what it took leading up to that
that one instance.

Speaker 4 (39:41):
So we've got a day turn round and we've got
to do the right thing tonight and a master.

Speaker 2 (39:56):
This guy here that is the voice of John Gibbs
talking about Luke Jacobson there alongside him, of course, has
one hundredth game for the Chiefs and a victorious one
for Luke Jacobson and his side. Eight away from what

of grassroots rugby in mid Canterbury. Congratulations to Reckire Rugby Club,
one of the few clubs, says Simon, here to produce
father and Son all blacks. Yes, indeed the peris the
Peries Grant Perry in nineteen eighty Tim Perry in twenty seventeen,
Father and Son all Blacks out of the Rekaiah Rugby Club.

(40:56):
Congratulations to you as you celebrate your one hundred and
fiftieth jubilee. Thank you for all your calls and correspondence
on Super Rugby. Feels as though the competition is still
a live and kicking looking forward to Super Round next weekend.
A great win by the Chiefs is debbie, but it
was Minty's commentary that was outstanding. Yeah, no, you cannot

(41:17):
doubt Minty's passion, absolutely not. Even though he called a
Chiefs one over my Hurricanes, I still enjoyed it very much.
After one o'clock, let's pivot to Saturday nights earlier. Gain
the Warriors getting it done against the Gold Coast Titans.
We'll zoom in on that after one.

Speaker 1 (41:34):
The only place to discuss the biggest sports issues on.

Speaker 17 (41:39):
A head off the field. You got a score enough.

Speaker 1 (41:41):
It's all on Weekend Sport with Jason Vine on your

Speaker 2 (41:48):
There, welcome in, Welcome back, one o seven. This is
Weekend Sport. I'm Jason Pine with Any McDonald running things
from the executive producer booth. Warriors shortly back to back wins,
second on the NRL ladder. Alafiana cant Perreira two tries,
his first two for the Warriors. He spent the last
three seasons at the Titans, where he was prolific. What

(42:12):
was it like scoring a couple of tries against his
former club last night and being a big part of
a Warrior's win. Can you get your thoughts Warriors fans too?
First fifty minutes excellent, last twenty. There's probably some thinking
to do, but the most important thing, of course is
the win in the two points down to Wellington next
weekend for an Anzac Day fixture against the Dolphins, which
has sold out. I think I don't think you can

(42:34):
get a ticket. Terrific stuff the Warriors. Wherever they go
they sell the joint out. Alafiana carn Pereira standing by
the chatist James mccony. This hour as well will keep
eyes on the Rua Pooner as well Top ten shootout
ahead of the big race this afternoon of five pass
threef it will get you to Ruapooner after two with

(42:55):
Eric Thompson. The growing list of sporting clubs around the
country celebrating this weekend now includes Buckland's Beach Tennis Club
their centenary across this weekend. Congratulations to all involved. Nineteen
twenty six to twenty twenty six. Butler's Beach Tennis Club,

(43:16):
they've had tournaments and events over the weekend. By the
sounds of things, Paul tells me it's where cam Nori
learnt to play the game. If you do have centennials, centenaries,
bi centenaries, Sesqui centenaries, any celebration happening at a sports
club at any time, please block us a note. We'd
love to let everybody know all about it. One o

(43:38):
nine back to back wins for the Warriors. There's second
on the NRAL Ladder beat in the Gold Coast Titans
twenty eight twenty at go Media last night, the Warriors
scored five tries, including a couple for winger Alafiana Kahn
Pereira against his former side four minutes away.

Speaker 6 (43:54):
The Warriors pre Megan Compotano stuff again from boyd.

Speaker 3 (44:00):
They're not a scottishy tey.

Speaker 4 (44:05):
Boy run.

Speaker 2 (44:06):
They've got the pass up again.

Speaker 13 (44:10):
Yes, happy.

Speaker 2 (44:15):
Is it?

Speaker 6 (44:16):
Everyone know that that's a second against his old firm.

Speaker 2 (44:19):
Yeah, Alafiana can Pereira is with a congrats mat on
the two tries against your former side and your part
in this one. And how happy were the players afterwards
and the coaches with the performance last night against the Titans.

Speaker 10 (44:32):
Yeah, no, it was.

Speaker 21 (44:34):
It was a great start from us, Very very proud
of the boys, and you know, we really wanted to
focus focus on our energy this week and some of
the execution we we definitely executed. And no, I think
we were still a bit disappointed at the back end
of the last twenty, but I think it was a good,
great learning curve for us.

Speaker 10 (44:54):
So yeah, it was great.

Speaker 2 (44:55):
Yeah, first half was terrific. Couple of tries for you.
You had the last three seasons at the Titans. How
were the emotions playing against them and playing so well
against them?

Speaker 3 (45:06):
Yeah, No, it was awesome.

Speaker 4 (45:07):
Man.

Speaker 21 (45:08):
It's always good to get a win against the old club.
Just had a great chat with you know, Webby and
a couple other boys, Fish, Aaron and Tanner. You know,
we had a we got a little meeting before the game, and.

Speaker 4 (45:21):
No, it was awesome.

Speaker 21 (45:21):
They just told me, you know, you got to keep
your head in and you know, do what's best for
the team. And you know that helped me. Helped me
a lot to get into the game and not overplay
my game and you know, it was a bit emotional
at the start, but yeah, no, I just really wanted
to earn the respect of the boys and do do
do the best I can as a as a as

(45:42):
a winger.

Speaker 2 (45:43):
What's it like playing outside Roger too vasa shick.

Speaker 11 (45:48):
Man.

Speaker 21 (45:50):
Yeah, I tell everyone, you know, I still gotta pinch
myself and you know, keep my head on. It's it's
it's it's awesome, man, Like just having Roger and in
the inside, you know, he's a massive energy for the
team and you know you just feed off that and
he's so much, so much, so much. Sorry, it's just

(46:12):
so much influence in the game. And man, it's really
two of us. A check bra He's you know, he's
a self explantory bros. He's the man.

Speaker 2 (46:21):
You found exactly the right word, man, influence. That's exactly
what he does. He seems to influence every single game
he plays. And you'd scored fifty three tries in fifty
four games for the Titans. How special they to score
your first couple for the Warriors.

Speaker 21 (46:34):
Yeah, no, it's awesome, And like I said, I just
can't believe. It's still pretty surreal, to be honest, But yeah,
like I said, I'd like to focus on the last
twenty of the of the game and what I really
want to fix on some of the things that will
me personally what I can do better, and like scoring

(46:56):
tries is awesome, but man, for me, I just really
want to work on my percent one percent.

Speaker 2 (47:02):
Yeah, and I heard you talk about that on the
on the post game last night with the Sky team,
talk about those one percenters and and is that more
your defensive stuff? Is that the kind of thing you're
talking about there?

Speaker 21 (47:13):
Yeah, of course, the defense and just like what I
can do off the board and where I can you know,
place myself with on the field and you know, just
be a nuisance where I can. But yeah, one like
only my catches, you know, working hard for the team
and just doing stuff where not many people can can

(47:36):
see those those little things on the field. But yeah,
for sure, defense is one of those things that I
really wanted to work on.

Speaker 2 (47:42):
So yeah, can you take respect to how the move
to the Warriors came about? How did that all happen? Oh?

Speaker 21 (47:50):
Mate, it's honestly like just a breath of fresh air.
You know, I just wanted to start something new, and
you know, webe came to me, and that he made
the move only easier for me. So he put a
lot of effort and trust trusting to me, and man, like,
I just really want to repay that for him, and

(48:12):
not just for him, but for the boys and the
club as a whole, and and do the best I
can for the team.

Speaker 2 (48:18):
So yeah, there must be a little bit daunting in
some ways coming into a new environment. But how much
did it help having your former teammates Aaron Clark and
Tanner Boyd already here?

Speaker 18 (48:30):
Yeah?

Speaker 21 (48:30):
No, that helped massively to that. Like I said that
the boys there made them move only easier as well.
So just having those boys and seeing them grow as
a player and change change from what I was used
to knowing them before. And man, they're just such incredible

(48:51):
players and people and men.

Speaker 4 (48:54):
Like just to experience that.

Speaker 21 (48:57):
Win last night with them as well was just just amazing.

Speaker 20 (49:00):
Man.

Speaker 21 (49:00):
I'm just so proud of them.

Speaker 2 (49:01):
And of course, I mean joining the club is one thing,
getting game times another. You've had to be a week
bit patient. How have you managed that, you know, just
waiting for your opportunity to arrive. How how challenging, if
at all, has it been being a bit patient?

Speaker 20 (49:15):
Yeah?

Speaker 21 (49:15):
It was a bit challenging. You know, it's probably a
blessing in disguise, Jase just trying to you know, still
learn the system and you know, nail down and get
my movements right, and you know what I mean, Like
I don't I didn't want to rush anything or you know,

(49:35):
try to squeeze into the team as far as possible.
But man, I think it's definitely all paid off. You know,
I can definitely see myself progressing in the area as well,
one of the progressing And no, honestly, it's just it's
just been great, great timing for me, to be honest.

Speaker 2 (49:53):
Yeah, I just do want to take you back to
your second try and the dive we've seen you made
on the other wing Dell and y Tenney's at least me,
I get airborn many times. I think he does. I
think sometimes it doesn't when he doesn't have to. Yours
just as impressive, though. Do you specifically work on that
sort of finishing during the week, knowing that you know
it's likely to come up in a game situation?

Speaker 21 (50:16):
Yeah, well this week, you know, it was since I
joined the Warriors. It's it's one of the drills that
the wingers do and you know, it's it's a big
focus here and you know, seeing now that's one of
the best and even Roger that's that's up there as well.
And man, they're just like doing some crazy airtimes in

(50:37):
the air in the corners and there's something that we
practice within the week and something we practiced just before
the game and our captain's run. So man, like it
just came to second nature when when you practice it
that much, and you know, it inspires me to do
so and no, just the talent and the boys doing

(50:58):
it before the game just makes me, I don't know,
just just very excited to work on it because it's
not something that that's easy to do or something that
you should be practicing a lot to Scotch tries, but
man for for it to come out and into the
game as just something specially ear just to finish.

Speaker 2 (51:19):
What's it like down on the grass at go Media
Stadium after a Warrior's when? What was that like last night?
After the whistle?

Speaker 21 (51:27):
Oh, it was awesome, just the crowd and just the boys,
you know, and for me especially to get one up
on the old team, is it just truly meant a
lot to me last night? Man everything just went so quick,
snap of a finger, and you know I was at home,
but I wish at time just slowed down, and you know,

(51:49):
I got to enjoy it just a bit more. And
you know, I really wanted to focus on, you know,
our last twenty and you know a bit disappointed about it,
but you know it's only only going to make us better.

Speaker 2 (52:00):
Yeah, well, it's got to give you something to work
on during the week. I guess you got to enjoy
this one man. Congratulations on your part and the Warriors
when last night and your two tries, it's been a
great players youre chatting Tom made all the best for
the week, your headership prepared to come to Wellington to
take on the Dolphins.

Speaker 10 (52:13):
Honestly, thank you met no, no, thank.

Speaker 2 (52:15):
You Lofiana carn Perera. There score of two tries last
night is first two interesting listening to Andrew Webster last
night when he was asked about about playing a Lofiana
carnt Perera, not so much playing but playing them against
his former club and whether there is a temptation to
either play a player against their former club or not

(52:36):
play a player against their former club because you're never
really sure what what they are going to do In
terms of motivation, and Andrew Webster said last night, the
players who play against their former team can often get
it wrong. Yes, they're very motivated and want to win,
but they can often get it wrong. They can overthink
it and not do their job. So they focused on

(52:58):
that with him this week and the results were there. Oh,
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty Warriors fans, what did
you make of it?

Speaker 12 (53:05):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (53:07):
Yeah, you look at today and the Warriors were ahead
twenty eight to four after sixty eight minutes, and then
you look at twenty eight twenty and you think, oh,
they you know, they let them back in the game.
It never felt like the Titans were going to win
the game. Just felt like, you know, the points margin
was too big. If there'd been another ten minutes, we
might be having a different conversation. But it always, even

(53:30):
with the less than impressive last twenty minutes, all of
the hard work in that game was done in the
first hour. And when Aaron Clark scored his try and
Tenor Boyd converted twenty eight points to four, and that
was still the score. As I say, after sixty eight minutes,
you're like, well, they're going to be okay. They're going
to be okay. Only the sixth time the Warriors have

(53:52):
started a season with five or more wins through seven games,
So if you take all of their seasons, the first
seven games of all of their seasons in their history,
just the sixth time they've got five or more wins
in their first seven games, and on all of the
previous five occasions they've made the finals twenty two nil

(54:16):
ahead at halftime, their biggest halftime lead since twenty twenty three,
and their biggest to nil since twenty nineteen, seven years
since they had a bigger halftime margin to nil. And
just before we go to the lines, they completed thirty
five of their thirty seven sets. That's ninety five percent completion,

(54:41):
second ninety plus match this season. So that's all trending
in the right direction, isn't it. And consecutive wins over
the Titans and snapping a three game losing streak against
them at GO Media Stadium. Satisfied with it?

Speaker 10 (54:54):
Mark?

Speaker 3 (54:55):
Were you? Yeah?

Speaker 21 (54:57):
I was?

Speaker 14 (54:58):
I think a lot of things we write for the
Warriors in the first half, but they did capitalize on
them and score points off them, which you knows is
a sign of the the team. Yeah, I'm just impressed
every time I listen to Wavy. I think he's he's
a great coach. He's level headed, he's practical, and he's
not he's not sort of an emotional coach.

Speaker 2 (55:19):
You know.

Speaker 14 (55:19):
Sometimes I look around the league at Ricky Stewart and
even like Benji Marshall coaches like that, he's more of
a sort of like I don't know, he's very sort
of considered practical. He doesn't get hype whether they win
or lose. He just sort of is really focused. And
he's a bit like Ivan Cleary and and Tom Ways.
And he's no surprise here coming from that from that

(55:40):
coaching background there. But yeah, it's just just impressive. And
the depths that he's building in the squad, in the
in the quality of play with all the players in
the squad, including those who aren't playing, and creating that
competition for positions right around the field. I think I'm
in real good stead at the moment as you look
around the NRL, and yeah, I think it bodes well

(56:03):
well for the season, don't you.

Speaker 2 (56:05):
I don't agree. And you talk about the depth and
Alofiana Carperera is a great example, he had to bide
his time. We had Roger Tui Vasaschek starting on that
wing for the first five games of the season, and
then he went to the centers when Adam Pompey was unavailable,
and Carperera's got his chance. And you look at him
now and you think, well, you know, you can't drop
him next week. He's got to play next week. And

(56:27):
you're so right mark about Andrew Webster, you know, and
often they say that the secret of elite sport is
that you don't ride the highst too high or the
lows too low. But it must be hard sometimes when
you know, when passion overtakes logic, and we've seen it
plenty of times, as you say, from a couple of
the coaches you've mentioned and others as well. But yeah,
he does. He seems very level, doesn't he, Webby.

Speaker 14 (56:49):
I think also like last night, I mean in previous
years when the Warriors have flown a lot of big
leads games and you know, I didn't have that feeling
last night that they were going to because they don't
just collect, you know, they don't just collapse anymore, because
they are in motional They've got a system in place
and they trust the system and you can see it.

(57:11):
Their defense is much stronger than it has been in
several years. In the way some of these Fords are running,
I mean, probably one of the best foward back forward
packs in the competition.

Speaker 12 (57:21):
At the moment.

Speaker 7 (57:22):
Now.

Speaker 14 (57:22):
Aaron Clark is just playing superbly in Ford. I mean,
I don't know, he's like a robot. He's like one
of these widen up toys that just keeps going for
eighty minutes. Incredible, And yeah, the whole Ford pack is
really probably one of the most consistently good in the
competition at the moment. And Yeah, as I said, I
just want to have a shout out for the Broncos
last night. I thought that was one of the best

(57:44):
wins I've actually seen in a while. They've got huge
injury problems, and I mean Payne has went off in
the in the first half of that. I just thought
that was a really good win over the Tigers, who
were riding pretty hard to They work competition, great competition
they are at the.

Speaker 2 (57:58):
Moment, isn't it just isn't it justin Yeah, you're right
about Ford Jackson for Robot's a really good wave of
describing him Mark, because he does. He just keeps on going.
Great to see Kurt Cape well back as well. I
haven't seen him since the first game of the season,
so he's back much. Barnet also back into the side
after a couple of games away. We're still waiting for

(58:18):
the return of a couple of players, you know, Luke
Metcalf still to come back in. Not sure what the
situation is with with Adam Pompey, but yeah, there's there's
genuine competition for positions right, and that's I guess another
feature of all good teams. So I agree with you, Mark, Well,
are you deary, I'm still here one.

Speaker 12 (58:38):
Yeah, you don't need anyone to carry your bags.

Speaker 14 (58:40):
Next week down down to christ Chips Made.

Speaker 2 (58:45):
Honestly, you'd be the one i'd call Mark. I get
the feeling we'd have great time down there, especially watching
how Hurricanes motell. What if if that vacancy opens up,
you'll be the first guy I call mate ten eighties
and another year looking forward to getting down to super
Around next week. Also, just honestly, I come believe they

(59:06):
let me do this, but this job there says but
looks like I'll be over in Magic round as well,
which is just a tremendous news. Speaking of the Broncos,
that Broncos Warriors game during Magic Round which is in
mid May, isn't it? Yeah, mid May, the weekend of
May fifteen, sixteen and seventeen. Warriors Broncos is the middle

(59:32):
match on the Sunday Broncos. Yeah, are looking looking at him. Mean,
that was a good one over the West Tigers last night.
As Mark mentioned, it just brings them up to there's
a whole bunch of teams on eight points now, so
the Broncos are sort of there thereabouts. West Tigers have
had a very good season. One twenty five, Paul get
to you in just a moment. Mayke got to get
a breakaway. There is a spear line. We'll talk rugby
league for the next fifteen to twenty minutes or so,

(59:54):
James mcconey before two and we'll bring you the top
ten shootout results as well from Ruepona. Back in a
moment on News Talks.

Speaker 1 (01:00:00):
He'd be where the weekend's biggest calls are made. Weekend
Sport with Jason faithe News Talk.

Speaker 2 (01:00:08):
News Talks thereb and Weekend Sport talking Warriors and they
went over the Titans last night. Were you worried at all, Paul,
at any stage?

Speaker 22 (01:00:17):
Yea, it was towards the right, towards the very in there,
but certainly not after the first half. Funny moment was
when the Titans at halftime, when and all this stuff,
and even the Titans CEO, they all went down the
tunnel with their heads down and a bunch of guys
would go out and if you know, Gordon tell us
it is one of the one of the owners, he's

(01:00:37):
invested money, and a bunch of guys were chanting good,
he wants a refund and.

Speaker 18 (01:00:44):
And uh.

Speaker 22 (01:00:45):
And the look on the CEO's face he wasn't their
happy mart But it was all fun and fun and games, mate.

Speaker 15 (01:00:50):
But yeah, it was.

Speaker 22 (01:00:53):
I mean, like you said that what the Demontra was
done in the first half. It was one of those games.
You know, last week's came to the win against the
Storm was so emotional. They would have been emotionally invested
into their They put a lot into that game, and
you know, they worries of old. It would have been
typical for them to come back home against a later

(01:01:15):
team and you know, and go down. But you know,
it was just good to see them come out and
and try and keep their energy up, the intensity you
know from last week, and they did the damage in
the first half. So it's two points. We're sitting second, mate,
so you can't complain.

Speaker 2 (01:01:29):
Roger TWI Vasushik at center. I mean he's obviously Alfiana
Camperrera benefited from a couple of passes to him at
the end of the end of a line on that
on that left edge. Do you see him as a
as the as the best player to play in the centers?

Speaker 10 (01:01:46):
Roger?

Speaker 2 (01:01:46):
Is he is he likely to wear that three jumper
for for the rest of the season, you know, injury permitting.

Speaker 18 (01:01:51):
Do you think?

Speaker 22 (01:01:53):
I hope so finally, because as we know, he's lost
that long term range pace you know, to go to
the length of the field. But what he does have
is he has a great little short pass and a
step you know, close to the line and very very
explosive off the mark. So twfict trefix center with earlier
the Etowa. It's a really really well balanced team mate,

(01:02:15):
and I was quite heavy.

Speaker 2 (01:02:16):
Yeah, good to hear, makee good to hear? So yeah,
And it's funny, isn't it when when a team scores
sort of so many points late on you think on man,
because I sort of had was I was commentating the
Phoenix at the same time. So I watched a replay
and I kind of knew what was happening because I'd
been kicking on the score. But even even watching it
back at you know, I didn't sense any panic, even

(01:02:36):
though they probably look back at their defensive air in
the last fifteen twenty minutes and have a decent, you know,
decent review of it. I just always thought they were
going to win the game.

Speaker 22 (01:02:46):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, well, yeah, there was a bit
of panic towards you need to be honest, mate, you know,
but no, it was all under control, mate. So I
thought Charms showed boy he is a full back at
the moment to be there. H had a great game
platform a drop.

Speaker 10 (01:03:03):
Ball, but.

Speaker 22 (01:03:06):
Chance had a great game. They all had a pretty
pretty good game. Mate changed for sher Harris led from
the front as usual. So you know, we get down
to Wellington next week against the Dolphins and they are
a tricky another tricky team, but hopefully the boys can
get up down in your part of the world. Made
you're going to go.

Speaker 2 (01:03:20):
Along, well, I would love to Paul but I'm going
to be in christ it's for super Round. It's just
a scheduling catastrophe that the one weekend the Warriors were
on Wellington, I'm not going to be here. So I mean,
I'm greatly looking forward to super Round, but I would
love to watch the Warriors in uh in Wellington. I've
sold they've sold it out of you. You're not going
to be able to make it down.

Speaker 22 (01:03:41):
No, no, no, no, won't make it down. But yeah,
so it's sold out, but it's good, good to see.
But it'll be a good game made against I know
the Dolphins here, like I said, they'd be one of
those tricky teams that that young half picked car tour
is not not not really playing it well. So but
as you know the Aral, every game you've got to
be one hundred percent on, mate. You can't, you can't

(01:04:01):
be slightly off. So it's it's eppy days for the wise.

Speaker 7 (01:04:04):
And just quickly I.

Speaker 22 (01:04:05):
Watched the New Wild's Cup team before the main game,
and very very impressive and you know with the talent
coming through Bishop Neil on the wing there and young
Jet Clear he had a fantastic game. So gee, we've
got some good gifts in the club mate, it's fantastic.

Speaker 2 (01:04:21):
Yeah, And well you look at what Tanner Boyd's done,
you know, coming into the team off the back of
his New South Wales Cup form, you know, I mean
midway through last year, had to come on obviously where
Metcalf got injured, but you know, time in that team
and even even even Camperreira, I'm sure he's he's played
a few New South Wales Cup games, hasn't he Just
to keep himself sharp and hoose opportunities coming he's in there.
So it's a it's a it's a really important part
of the what the club's all about.

Speaker 12 (01:04:43):
Absolutely.

Speaker 22 (01:04:44):
I know that they keep the systems and the plays
and the calls and the shapes and all that sort
of stuff they work on that. It's the same you know,
all the way through from the from the hell Matthew's
juicy fleag New Southwest Cup. So when they do come
into the main team, they're already familiar with with with
you know, the calls and everything.

Speaker 2 (01:05:02):
So that's really good.

Speaker 22 (01:05:04):
And Antenna Boyd, I know there's an issue when Metcalf
comes back, and I know Sean Johnson and another guy,
Monty Betan said that, you know, Tenn has got to go,
and you know when metcalf you've got to start metcalf
which would be really, really tough on Tenner Boyd.

Speaker 2 (01:05:18):
So you know, I mean, what do you do.

Speaker 22 (01:05:21):
I guess you'll have to run metcalf from tenor six
and seven and Chanelle unfortunately will have to go to
the bench. But he's playing well well also, So yeah,
but I.

Speaker 2 (01:05:31):
Don't know, I honestly don't much as I'd say, you've
got to have Luke Metcalfe in there somewhere. I thought
Chanelle was again very good last night. I got that
try and it seemed, you know, geometrically impossible would get
the ball down. He's somehow I got it down. Boy,
it's been great. I don't know. I mean, yeah, there's
a huge temptation to play Metcalfe.

Speaker 13 (01:05:51):
Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 22 (01:05:52):
I mean shanew what he does bring over metcalf Chanell's
defense we saw last week the tackle on King. Chanel
is such a defender. He's got a great kicking game,
you know, you know that the bombs he puts up,
so it's going to be really hard. You know, he's
got a really tough call to make. When Nickcuff and
Metcalf walked passed with us and how far away he did?

(01:06:12):
He did say two or three weeks. So yeah, it's
going to be tough. We've got so we've got this
game coming up against the Dolphins and we've got the Eels.
So there are two gettable games and we've got to buy.
So that's six points. So so not as we could
be top of the table mating three weeks time.

Speaker 2 (01:06:26):
Mate, Magic round, top of the table against the Broncos
over there. How good, Paul, How good mate? The mate
of the four good mate, good to Jet is always
love breaking down these Warriors games with you. Oh, eight
hundred and eighty ten eightys o nunber years, as Baul said,
Dolphins and Wellington next Saturday, Ansac Day, then the Eels away,
then it's the bye and then Magic rounds in Brisbane

(01:06:49):
and the Warriors have the Broncos that weekend. That is
going to be an absolute classic. We can talk worries
for a bit longer. Just updating you on the Supercars
at RU opponent. The top ten shootout is done and
Matthew Payne has has qualified top for this afternoon's main
race at Royal Poona. He in fact, topped all three

(01:07:10):
legs of qualifying and has qualified top and the top
ten shootout. Anton Deepasqually will start second on the grid.
The other Kiwi Ryan Wood or another one of the
kibis Ryan Wood, then Well Brown, Brock, Phoene Kai, Allen Brody, Kostecki,
Cam Waters, Aaron Cameron, and James Golding. That is the
positions after the top ten shootout. With the race set

(01:07:32):
to go just after three o'clock this afternoon, we'll get
to Eric Thompson or at Royal Poona in the last
hour of the show just to preview that race for you. Now,
on a Saturday, we do a sporting chance with the
TAB and we're getting quite good at this. I think
we're getting quite good at this. When I say we,

(01:07:53):
it's our listeners who are getting quite good at it.
Because if you're not familiar with the game that we play.
We've got one hundred and fifty dollars bonus bet to
give away from the tab every Saturday, and we get
a caller on the air and they have a choice
of three bets short even all long, and they choose
the one they want. We placed the bet and if
it comes in they take the winnings. Well, yesterday we
had Mark on the show and I gave him his

(01:08:15):
three options. The Hurricanes to beat the Chiefs you'd win
one fifty seven fifty. The Phoenix to win one nil,
two nil or two to one. Against the Wanderers you'd
win three hundred and ninety. Or the Titans to beat
the Warriors thirteen plus you would win twelve hundred. Which
one would you like to go with?

Speaker 14 (01:08:35):
That's a hard one, isn't it, giveny recommendations.

Speaker 2 (01:08:39):
Well, I mean, I could never bet against the Warriors,
and honestly, I can't see a universe in which the
gold tost Titans put, you know, put a score one
of thirteen plus on the Warriors. However, it has happened before.
I'm a Hurricanes fan, so I can't possibly be objective there.
I don't mind the Evans Western Sydney bottom. The Phoenix
need to win to stay in toxic contention one nil,
two nil, two to one. I don't mind that thre

(01:09:01):
hundred and nine.

Speaker 12 (01:09:01):
Yeah, yeah, I think that I'll go with that one.

Speaker 14 (01:09:03):
I see number two.

Speaker 2 (01:09:04):
All right, I'm glad, I'm glad we've elluded on that
and discussed in the game though, Oh good, I excellent. Well,
when it's one nil, two nil or two to one
approaching the final whistle, I'll look out for you as
the as the guy sitting on the edge of his seat, yeah,
I'll be jumping up and down. Well that was Mark yesterday,
no doubt, jumping up and down because the bet that
he went with came in, didn't it. The Phoenix to

(01:09:27):
win one nil, two nil or two one and two
to one was the was the final score. Marks followed
up with an email this morning just to make sure
that that he hadn't dreamt it.

Speaker 3 (01:09:39):
What a game.

Speaker 2 (01:09:40):
The Phoenix held on for a win and I was
the lucky winner of a sporting chance. Well done, Mark.
We will play that game again next Saturday. Whenever I
say a sporting chante, people just start to ring. I'm sorry,
I didn't mean to get your hopes up that we
were perhaps in producing it on a Sunday as well.
But well, unto you, Mark, and we will be in

(01:10:00):
touch to make sure that that three hundred and ninety
dollars ends up with Thank you. Twenty two away from two.
Let's get a break away and then James mcconey in
his regular Sunday slot.

Speaker 1 (01:10:14):
No DMO, no DRS, just your call on eight hundred
eighty ten eighty Weekend Sports with Jason Paine, News Talk, there'd.

Speaker 2 (01:10:22):
Be nineteen away from two On Sunday afternoons, we get
the pleasure of the company of James mcconey. Your chiefs
are going to win the whole thing, James. They smashed
the Hurricanes and super point extra time, golden stuff. You're
going to win the whole thing.

Speaker 10 (01:10:37):
Yeah, it feels like it, doesn't it, Piney, A good afternoon.
Looks like it's all chess munna all the way that
we've got ourselves a bit of a convoy. We had
players missing, we were struggling to put together a strong side,
and then suddenly, out of nowhere a golden point victory

(01:10:58):
with Wallace the TC, the tormentor of the Hurricanes doing
it once again.

Speaker 2 (01:11:04):
Yeah, did did give me flash back to that semi
finally couple of years ago when he turned up at
Wellington Stadium and put on one of the all time
great performances by any player in any game of super rugby.
He obviously has had a severely truncated season with injury,
but yeah, just quickst to react, wasn't he when that

(01:11:24):
ball deflected upwards? It wasn't a surprise at all to
see him in the middle of a key moment last night.

Speaker 10 (01:11:31):
Yeah, there's a lot of ball watching going on there,
so the Hurricanes will be a bit disappointed with that,
a bit gutted. But I also thought they you know,
did they choke him and they getting rid of or
subbing cameroy guard when it was that ten minutes of
extra time required. I thought that probably wasn't the best idea.
But I just want to talk about the positives and

(01:11:52):
the chiefs, and one of the one of the heroes
I thought was was Rion Paul. Now, look, he has
just been unbelievable for you know, a guy who's just
making his debut pretty much out of nowhere. And I
don't know he is he related to Henry Paul, Robbie Paul,
or even Rue Paul. But he he delivered, He slayed.

(01:12:16):
To use RuPaul Lingo having to mark Jordi Barrett one
of the best players in the world.

Speaker 2 (01:12:22):
Well you know he's t J Pettinara's nephew. Ah, well
do you go? So there is a there is there
is there is some pretty strong rugby blood flowing through
the Yeah, I agree. I mean you look at that,
You look at that Chiefs Chiefs back line and you
know the familiar names in there, and guys have been
I mean, Quintin Pie has been absolutely magnificent all season,

(01:12:43):
hasn't he. In McKenzie, even Toilmoyfiler has been around for
a while. Paul Is he's very much the old man
out in terms of experience. But you I thought he
gave a pretty god account of himself at second five.

Speaker 10 (01:12:54):
Yeah, he got stuck in and he is cleaning out,
is defending hard. I mean that was the one thing
I thought that the Chiefs are really gutsy. They didn't
give all those X factor players like Fana, nor for
Ruben love ethel. You know, there was no room there.
Billy Procton didn't get much room to breathe either, So
I thought that defensively they really stood up. And of

(01:13:15):
course they're doing it for Luke Jacobson and his hundreds.
They're real stall work for the club. But there was something.
It was probably a humbling one for the Hurricanes because
they were counting their chickens a little bit. I mean
I could sense it from your voice last week, Poney.

Speaker 2 (01:13:27):
Definitely, I was counting like the count on Sesame Street.

Speaker 10 (01:13:33):
Absolutely, But it's good because this is what you need
in super rugby and I just think these two teams
have got an awseo and rivalry going. I wouldn't be
surprised if this is the final they really and Damien
McKenzie versus Reuben Love. I loved that battle as well.
Possibly mackenzie looked like he was about to give away

(01:13:54):
a penalty right at the death there and that might
have changed the flip the script completely. But right now
I'm just going d mac for the All Blacks number
ten Jersey. Why not?

Speaker 2 (01:14:03):
Yeah, I think he's got the inside running at them.
If the team was picked today, he would certainly be
in the team. Jumper. I think, Hey, the Crusaders lost
again last night. I just just picked up on this.
They've lost both of their games in Australia, both by
identical scores. Thirty one twenty six to the Reids last week,
thirty one twenty six to the Force last night. What's
going on?

Speaker 10 (01:14:22):
Well, the Crusaders without Will Jordan aren't really the Crusaders
in my opinion. They're still a strong team. But talk
about a talisman, it's Will Jordan's seat of brings them
all together. Really, I think they're the Western Force are
better than you think. And Zach Lomax looked pretty good
as an NRL convert on the wing, scoring a try

(01:14:44):
in sort of getting up and contesting high balls and stuff.
But the Crusaders minus Will Jordan are one thing. But
what about the Crusaders minus fair horses. There seems to
be quite a bit of consternation about that down in
the Garden City, and I am concerned about what they'll
be like minus those horses. I know, apparently you've probably
done your research, Piney, there's too much I guess there's

(01:15:07):
no room for them in the new stadium, and there's
too much technology underfoot for the hooves to be trampling around.
But I also did notice that sometimes they used to
encroach on the dead ball area. And I imagine I
know that Crusaders fans loved the horses, but if a
a hoof print it somehow diverted a ball and the
Crusaders had lost one of those titles, they might be

(01:15:28):
feeling different about those horses. It might be like a
you know, a godfather situation with one of them appearing
in your bed.

Speaker 2 (01:15:37):
That conversation to gera grimm and sinister turn. But yeah, no, no,
not at all.

Speaker 8 (01:15:41):
No.

Speaker 2 (01:15:42):
Yeah, we had had a bit of a yarn about
this on the show yesterday, and yeah, I think you're right.
I think as far as I can see, it's it's
a space and a health and safety issue, as so
much seems to be these days. But yeah, look new
stadium next week, warratas. I think they'll be fine. I
think they'll be fine. I mean, there's no point running
the Crusaders off because we do that at our peril.

(01:16:04):
Mawana pacific are those though there's a sad news that
we're going to be without Mawana Pacifica beyond the end
of the season. In all likelihood, Yeah.

Speaker 10 (01:16:14):
I'm gathered by this. I really wanted Wanna Pacifica to work.
They probably needed some high profile people like Dwayne Johnson,
Jason Momore, and maybe just a tech billionaire. I've been
googling them and trying to find a Pacific a tech billionaire.
I found a guy called Mike Bork who's the founder

(01:16:35):
of Upguard cybersecurity. But you needed that kind of money
because This is the problem with professional sports teams, especially
ones that are trying to find out, you know, a
place in the world. If you don't have the people,
the bums on seats and you need those people with
deep pockets. It's just a real shame that it's happened.
But there are investors around the world who do want

(01:16:56):
to get into Super Rugby. So I'm just hoping that
maybe for there he could be some Cinderella story and
perhaps the Americans who we've talked about a lot of
Americans who want to get a Super Rugby team, maybe
they want to invest. But that's about the only hope
I see on the horizon.

Speaker 2 (01:17:14):
Yeah, I agree, and you do hold out hope. It
would be great if they could stay. It just doesn't
feel as though it's the most likely outcome. We wait
and see. To Brighten News, Charlie's led your Walker, etching
her name into history, the first can We woman to
be drafted into the w NBA. She's terrific. A I've
just I love this story and I just can't wait

(01:17:36):
to see what's next for Charlie leder Walker.

Speaker 10 (01:17:39):
Yeah, well this happened on Tuesday. I was down visiting
the magnificent Chiefs and making sure that they had the
game plan right pony, and I was listening along on
my sky sport now at and just listening like I
was listening to the cricket or something, just to see
the result a draft at eighteen, she's gone to the
Connecticut Sun. They play in orange, and so orange is

(01:18:02):
the new black for us. We've going to get that
merchandise that she's been drafted with one of her UCLA teammates,
Gianna Napkins, which is pretty cool. But she gets four
hundred and fifty thousand dollars in New Zealand minimum in
her first year, So this is just amazing. She's bit
at her time, she's come back from an ACL can't
be happier, and she's also a big chief sand Oh

(01:18:25):
she I.

Speaker 3 (01:18:25):
Didn't know that?

Speaker 2 (01:18:26):
Okay, Well that's that's even better, even better from yeah, well,
I mean, yeah, what other team are you going to have?
Can I ask you about Tottenham? Look, I thought they
were going to get the win this morning against Brighton
and Hove Albion. They were two one ahead and we
were into the fifth minute of added time when Brighton

(01:18:46):
found an equalizer. I keep on thinking Okay, Tottenham will
won a game. They'll win this game, they win that game,
Tottenham could go down, could get relegated.

Speaker 10 (01:18:55):
Yeah, this is a massive story and I've been wondering
when we should talk about it. But it's five games
to go now, I think, pony, so it is time
to talk about it. Third from bottom. They're in a
battle with west Ham and Nottingham Forest by the looks
of things, and maybe one other team. But nothing's easy
in the Premier League, so they are actually in dire straight.
They haven't been down in the second division, let's call it,

(01:19:17):
since nineteen seventy eight. And this is a Tottenham with
probably the best stadium in the whole Premier League. And
it's a massive story really, and even just letting their
stars go in recent years. I know Harry Came wanted
to leave Song Cheung Men and all that sort of.

(01:19:38):
They were guaranteed box office that team, and how the
Mighty have fallen is to see how far they go.

Speaker 2 (01:19:43):
Yeah, well, they always talk about the Big Six and
Tottenham were part of that Big six. You can't be
part of the Big six of you playing in the Championship. Look,
I got a few friends who are Tottenham fans and
I wish them all the best, but you know, their
team's got to start winning a couple of games. As
you say, they're one point behind west Ham and two
points behind Nottingham Forest, but both of those teams have

(01:20:05):
got a game hand over them, so if they were
to win their games in hand, then it really is
looking a bit dire for Spurs. Look, I hope they
stay up, and I hope Forrests stay up too, because
of course that's where Chris Wood plays. But that one
would mean that west Ham go down, and I've got
a few free friends or west Ham fans as well,
So there's really no good outcome here. I don't think no,

(01:20:28):
And that's the whole thing.

Speaker 10 (01:20:29):
I think Spurs realized that they aren't a legit Big
six team right now. They've got a few promising young
players there, but they're having to sort of get their
head around the fact that they might go down. You know,
there are some stars were charliston from Brazil. There's players
in there who can score goals, but really the Premier

(01:20:50):
League there's no free hits and I've looked at the
I think on the last day they have to play Everton,
not a badside. I think it's going to come down
to the last day.

Speaker 2 (01:21:01):
James. Always good chatting with you mate. Enjoy your Enjoy
your week at the top of the Super Rugby. Let's

they are in. Look, I'm yeah, a bit gutted. Actually,
I'm not going to be in Wellington for that Warriors
game next week. We'll keep very close eyes on it
obviously and preview and review it as as we see fit.

(01:21:53):
But yeah, they've sold out Henry Stadium, which is just
catching up. That's the new name of Wellington Stadium, Henry Stadium.
They've sold it out. A lot of stuff planned across
this week and obviously with it being Anzac Day, some
special commemorations to be had as well. So look, if
you're off to the Warriors Dolphins in Wellington next Saturday,

(01:22:15):
you're in for a treat. Should be an absolute cracker
and the Warriors have. They've nailed today. They've nailed it
in terms of their fan base. They could play anywhere
in New Zealand now the Warriors and sell it out.
That's where we are now with the Wars. So looking

It's the biggess up, sir.

Speaker 5 (01:24:48):
It's Super Rugby, Pacific history.

Speaker 2 (01:24:52):
Well bit core, but maybe he's right. The drawer going
to Canberra and beating the Brumbies last night thirty three
points to twenty eight. Immediately following that, the Force stunned
the c Crusades out west.

Speaker 5 (01:25:07):
Phase number seventeen, still playing advantage over the line try.
The Force are in a terrific phase play from the
Force eighteen phases. They've ended up to the left of
the uprights and they're thrilled with that one. Harry Johnson Holmes.

(01:25:28):
The Crusaders are gonna lose two in a.

Speaker 2 (01:25:30):
Row and by the same scoreline as well. Thirty one
twenty six the Force getting up over the Crusaders last
night to the NRL South Sydney heaping even more hurt
onto the Dragons who can getting on for.

Speaker 20 (01:25:43):
A short first Mitchel he's gone on, he's got.

Speaker 6 (01:25:46):
Three, he's got four, one two three for the trail.

Speaker 2 (01:25:51):
The Rabbitos winning that thirty points to twelve, the Dragons
o and seven. Now in twenty twenty six men on
the Broncos squeaked out a win over West mpon'.

Speaker 6 (01:26:02):
Get it back the play that says spif Oh, that's
a big call. Prisbord have it last tackle Credle Silk
in fronts added Reynolds with a field goal from running.

Speaker 2 (01:26:16):
From twenty one points to twenty the Broncos over the Tigers.
The Black Ferns meantime, have finally got one back over
the Canadian rugby team and out of.

Speaker 4 (01:26:24):
The FIC Canada. They're on the right.

Speaker 3 (01:26:25):
God they don't listen and just says on the goal
line for New Zealand fastender.

Speaker 2 (01:26:33):
Lead and it's over the thirty six fourteen when putting
the Black Ferns in the box seats. In the Pack
four series, the Wellington Phoenix have had the final say
the final farewell at Apollo Project Stadium in christ Church,
ken Wellington. As they did in the first half, find
some reward and end product for their dominance. At the
start of the second here's a in the area Haine

(01:26:55):
brings to the legas Cross. The ball was the mess
from Press Greene Cup they did and it goes from
Kazuki Nagasaba. And while the two one win wasn't enough
to keep their top six hopes alive, it didn't make
one of our listeners a bit of money. And finally

(01:27:16):
another home winner at Ruapoona, a solid out mpoon A.

Speaker 23 (01:27:20):
Raceway will be on their feet, Matt pain And there's
just something a little bit special about a Kiwi winning
on home term. And today is Matt Paine's day. He
joins the winner's list.

Speaker 3 (01:27:35):
Matt Payne wins.

Speaker 23 (01:27:35):
At the Ita christ Chat super Foot Body Race twelve.

Speaker 3 (01:27:39):
Is the Kiwis.

Speaker 1 (01:27:41):
The biggest names in sport are here Weekend Sport with
Jason Vine News Talks NB.

Speaker 2 (01:27:48):
Eleven past two. It's a pleasure now to bring you
a pretty inspirational sports story. Guy Harrison had a normal birth,
but when he was three years of age, he had
a massive seizure and technically died. He was revived but
left with cerebral pausing. The doctors told Guy and his
family at that time that he would not be able

(01:28:10):
to walk or talk and would be in a wheelchair
for the rest of his life. He defied the odds
with the support of his parents and the game of golf.
Guy is now twenty four years old. He can walk,
he can talk, he's out of his wheelchair, and he
is also New Zealand's number one disability golfer and recent

(01:28:31):
winner of New Zealand's All Abilities Golf Championship at Windross Farm.
He has recently been awarded a scholarship by the Royal
and Ancient Golf Club, which will allow him, among other things,
to travel to the UK shortly to play in the
G four D Open later in the month. It's a
story of resilience, belief and the power of sport to

(01:28:52):
literally change lives. Guy Harrison is with us. Guy, your
story is incredible when you reflect on what you were
told or what your family was told when you were
just a very small child. What does it mean to
you now to be achieving what you are in competing
at this level.

Speaker 24 (01:29:11):
Yeah, Like after that slow start, and having been really
enough lucky to have parents that I have, being able
to prove them wrong, being able to play the game
I love. Starting off at the local nine hole courses
playing with Dad, and then now being able to have
the opportunity to go overseas and play against the best
players in the world is truly unbelievable and can't believe
that it's so close to be able to do that.

Speaker 2 (01:29:33):
Take us back to those early days. You mentioned your dad.
There is that how golf first came into your life
and why do you think it resonated with you.

Speaker 24 (01:29:42):
I mean, after the seizure, I went from being able
that everything was normal to then not being able to
do anything, and Dad, being a top sportsman, hum South
was thinking, oh, we need to find a sport to
keep them moving, and he thought of golf. And I
started golf when I was five years old at the
local golf course, and it was just being able to

(01:30:03):
beat Dad was always a big gold mine. It was
always my big goal to try and beat Dad. And
just being able to go out hitting some clean shots
and just having spend some time with my father. That's
why I love the game so much. Being able to travel,
be so lucky in the Zeland with the matter golf courses.
I mean yeah, I just got hooked straight away and
then just enjoy traveling after that.

Speaker 2 (01:30:22):
What were some of the biggest physical and mental challenges
you had to overcome to get to where you are now?

Speaker 24 (01:30:29):
I mean yeah, as we all know, growing up with
the disability is not easy, and with the disability I have,
it's really day by day I struggle a lot with
fatigue and then also the other factor of being able
to just being able to play, like some days I
can't play, and then the mental side of things of

(01:30:49):
being able to believe that I can play the game
at the level that I'm playing at at the moment.
Golf has been great for me because for a lot
of people out there with disabilities is a really you
get a lot of chances. You don't get many chances
to spend and do stuf with kids your own age,
and golf gave me a chance to be able to

(01:31:09):
make friends, make connections and just being able to live
in a normal life. And I'm just so thankful for
my parents to get me into golf because I wouldn't
be where I am today without them.

Speaker 2 (01:31:21):
Well, you mentioned beating your dad before, which is a
form of competition. I think we all all like to
beat our parents at whatever it is that we come
up against them in. But when I mean, has it
always been a sport that from early on you were
competitive in or did that come later that you started
to think about, Hey, i'll maketually, I'll actually not bad
at this.

Speaker 24 (01:31:40):
I mean I grew up in the Hawk's Bay and
I went through Hawks Bay Junior Golf, but I mean
at that stage, I didn't even know about disability golf.
Going through, I wasn't the top golfer there, but I
was able to win some matches against some top players
throughout the time, and I just used to love competing
for I went to Native Boys and was in the
top school team for this and then being able to

(01:32:03):
go and travel and represent the region was really nigh.
But the first time I knew about disability golf was
twenty nineteen. There was a disability golf open that I
was being played at Maria Noui, which was my home
course growing up, and not knowing about it. A mate
so a post the normal, ah, God, you got disability,
why don't you plan this? And I was like, oh,
what his disability golf, and then from this moment on

(01:32:26):
it was just going through the journey of being able
to travel around, meeting different players and slowly being able
to get high and higher up in the rankings than
now being the top ranked golfer. It's pretty nice to
be able to b I am now, but it's cool
to be able to have the journey to get me
to that point.

Speaker 2 (01:32:42):
Also, what parts of your game, guy, have improved the
most and in the last two or three years.

Speaker 24 (01:32:50):
If you know me, well, we all know how erratic
I am off the tea. That I mean, I can
had a big board, but I'm a very sociable tree lover.
That mean I normally end up in the trees a bit.
But being able to have this shot to being able
to just stay positive, I mean a lot of times
I'll slow down my swinging and then I'm still going
to be heading in the trees anyway, do I mean?

(01:33:11):
My biggest change have been the mental side and my
driving have gone a lot bigger, bigger and more consistent
over the last few years, which have given me a
lot more opportunities to compete in competition.

Speaker 2 (01:33:22):
So tell us about what's coming up. The G four
d Open at Celtic Manor Resort. Tell us about that.

Speaker 24 (01:33:30):
I mean, this is the Pinnacle of disability golf. That
means seventy players around the world qualified for this event,
and being and winning our national champs this year and
being the top rank plane in New Zealand ended up hetting.

Speaker 10 (01:33:43):
Me in for this event.

Speaker 24 (01:33:44):
I mean, it's pretty much it's kind of we've all
been watching the Masters. This event is kind of like
the Masters of Disability golf. All the best players around
the world will go and have two days and then
he will be a cut for the third day. For
the top half the field will qualify for the third
day to go for the net for the International Championship.

(01:34:04):
There'll be a core opportunity to play to cut course
and just a chance to be able to see where
have the top player is that because can't leave the
top disability player in the world have surreal Poisi too.
I mean, it's pretty cold to be able to have
time to inspire to that have the same disability that
it would be nice to watch him and see how
he adapts his game to be able to be at

(01:34:25):
the level he is today. But it will just be
a coo opportunity to be able to play myself, but
also put New Zealand on the map. I mean, I'm
the first New Zealander ever qualified for this event. And
having the New Zealand flag here alongside all the other
international flags will be killed and being able to promote
the good stuff that's happening down in New Zealand at
the moment. When it comes to the disability golf, you're.

Speaker 2 (01:34:46):
Doing an amazing work guy off the course, and you've
spoken I know about wanting more access and awareness of
disability golf. What are the biggest barriers for disabled people
wanting to play golf in New Zealand.

Speaker 24 (01:35:00):
The biggest barriers is it's a lot around this knowledge
side of things, but it's also the resource is current
they do I mean in the background alongside my own playing,
I'm doing a lot of work at the moment trying
to create a funding stream to be able to get
players overseas for twenty twenty seven. The aim of this
trip for this year is for me to go over

(01:35:21):
and experience it. Also playing in Scotland and London then
we have a few chances to see how they run
the events over there. But also we are doing initiative
of trying to raise the money for that that I mean,
we're looking at trying to raise one hundred thousand dollars
and we booked on a charity golf day at Royal
Auckland on the fifteenth of their next year, which will

(01:35:42):
be a big part of our funding. And the main
reason why we are doing this is to be able
to provide a pathway for those other disability golf is
coming through, a chance to go overseas and compete against
the best in the world. But not only that, the
most important thing when it comes to all sport is
the grassroads and this is a level of things that

(01:36:03):
we're missing out on at the moment. That mean being
able to perform the resources of SNAG equipment and then
being able to give them out to local community groups
and disability organizations, to be able to grow the base
of junior disability golfers coming through and then having a
base of players playing overseas and being able to inspire

(01:36:25):
those young kids just getting into the game. This whole
system around having the people to inspire the grassroots and
golf in dead disability golf in deeds at the moment
running really cool disability events locally. With those three pathway pieces,
this will create golf for be a lot bigger in
the years to come.

Speaker 2 (01:36:43):
Incredible. Do you have a stop and appreciate and feel
proud of just how far you have come? Personally, I've
I have looked back.

Speaker 24 (01:36:54):
I've been really lucky and my golf has always been
my love, but I've also been involved with other sports,
from athletics, the swimming, the triathlon.

Speaker 12 (01:37:03):
But at the end of the.

Speaker 24 (01:37:04):
Day, I know how lucky I've been, and here's been
those people out there who have given back to given
me an opportunity to be where I am today. And
then now it's the time for myself to be like, Okay,
I've been so extremely lucky. Now it's the time to
be able to give back and give back to the
kids coming through and the family's coming through. They're all
going through the heartaches of going through this and if

(01:37:24):
I can make this slightly easier and being able to
provide the game that I love of golf, and golf
is one of the most successful games in the world.
This is something I'm truly passionate and it's nice about
to do for full circle of being given everything growing
up to be able to overcome my own barriers to
now be able to overcome other people's burriers moving forward.

Speaker 2 (01:37:45):
So it sounds like your biggest goal now is of
course you still want to be successful personally, but it
sounds as though your bigger goal is making sure others
get the same opportunity that golf has given you. Would
that be a fair assessment.

Speaker 24 (01:38:00):
Yes, I mean I'm still as you can see with
the beating dad thing, I'm still competitive myself, but at
the end of the day, if i'm I love competing
and stuff like that, but he's more important of giving
back that I mean. Currently, I worked down in the
minu or two as the paraped disability sports advisor corderating

(01:38:20):
all the events for the kids with physical disabilities down here,
and then now being able to provide more golfing opportunities
for kids with kids or adults of disabilities coming through
this will be it's this legacy piece. Don't mean for me,
I want to be able to make a difference for
the people coming through. Then I've had my career and
I'm still competing, but being able to do both at

(01:38:41):
the same time will have a lot more positive effect
than just focusing on my own sports at his card
moment to finish.

Speaker 2 (01:38:48):
What would you say to a young person with a
disability or a family that that you know includes a
young person with a disability who might be a bit
unsure about trying golf or in fat guy trying any sport.

Speaker 10 (01:39:02):
Just go just go out and do it.

Speaker 24 (01:39:04):
Here's always ways that you're going to be able to
adapt it being outside. We are so lucky in these zelands,
but outdoors and things like that, and with the game
of goals, just start off with many parts, then go
to the driving range, and then keep confident on the
driving range, and then go to the range. You don't
have to look like the professionals like Rory McRoy or
Tiger Woods. You can you can look a little bit different,

(01:39:27):
but just go out there and enjoy it and just
having a whole lot of fun with friends and family
and just have you ever a chance, say yes and
just give it a go, and you never know where
it might take you.

Speaker 2 (01:39:37):
Your journey is inspiration or your story is one that's resonated,
I'm sure with many of our listeners. All the best
on your travels, Congratulations on what you've achieved up to
this point, and look forward to staying in touch to
see to see the power of good that you're doing
in the future. Thanks for taking time for a chat
to us. Thank you very much, No, thank you very much, guy,

(01:39:57):
Guy Harrison. There pretty inspirational stuff text here just tuned in.
Who is the superhero you have on at the moment?
Harrison is his name? If you missed the start of
our chat. He suffered a massive seizure when he was
three years old, technically died, was revived, left with cerebral palsy.

(01:40:18):
The doctor said he's not going to walk, he's not
going to talk. He's going to be in a wheelchair
for the rest of his life. And yet here he
is New Zealand's number one disability golfer, recent winner of
New Zealand's All Abilities Golf Championship and now the first
New Zealander to go to the UK and qualify to
play in the G four d Open later in the month.

(01:40:42):
What a story, What a privilege to have a chance
to chat to Guy Harrison to twenty four here at
News Talks there be and Weekend Sport.

Speaker 1 (01:40:49):
We're back after this hard tackles, harder opinions. We can
sport with Jason five news talks, there'd be news talks
there be and weekend sport.

Speaker 2 (01:40:59):
What are we to? Twenty seven Auckland FC back in
action this afternoon, their final regular season home game up
against the Central Coast Mariners at go Media Stadium with
a three o'clock kickoff. Auckland FC need to win this game.
In fact, a draw would keep them alive, but a
win would be better to stay alive in the defense

(01:41:22):
of their Premier's plate. This is the regular season silverware
in the A League Men's Newcastle currently on forty five
points from twenty five games, Auckland FC are four points
behind with a game in hand. Win this game in
hand this afternoon they go to forty four, they'd be
one point behind Newcastle. Both teams would have one game

(01:41:44):
left to play, so it would go right down to
the final weekend. Newcastle of course would have the advantage
having the one point lead, but Auckland f C can
certainly keep the pressure on with victory this afternoon. As
I say, a draw wouldn't completely rule them out of
keeping the plate. A loss though, would, so it's a
fairly important game against the Mariners this afternoon three o'clock.

(01:42:07):
Lachland Brook is a big part of Auckland FC's roster,
is going to be a big part of their finals
push and was a goal scorer a week ago. Surely
Brook won't leave this four terrace.

Speaker 4 (01:42:22):
It is bright.

Speaker 2 (01:42:25):
Deficit proble love like that.

Speaker 12 (01:42:31):
For the top corner.

Speaker 2 (01:42:34):
Hey scene level again, that was lockey Brook scoring a
week ago for his side and a tow to draw
with Melbourne victory. But let's let's bring the man in lockeye.
When you hit a ball like that, do you think
to yourself, Okay, well that's in.

Speaker 15 (01:42:52):
It's one of those ones that it happens so quick,
but you always when you hit a ball, you sort
of know that it's it's got a chance. You can
sort of tell when you hit the ball with it
if it's traveling the right way. So yeah, I definitely
thought it had a chance and I'm just fortunate enough.

Speaker 2 (01:43:08):
I went in how much do you work on your
on your set piece situations like that? How often are
you working on dead ball situations like that at training
during a week?

Speaker 15 (01:43:19):
Honestly, not too much to be fair, like maybe once
every couple of weeks, just to have a little refresher
and stuff. But I think it's more of a it's
a feeling, to be fair, like when when you're doing
a free kicks like a boys sort of had the
same technique with it and stuff. So I mean, I
could probably work on it a bit more, but hopefully

(01:43:40):
try to get a few more of them.

Speaker 8 (01:43:41):
But yeah, no, not as not as much as you
might think.

Speaker 2 (01:43:44):
And were you about to be substituted. We're up in
the skybox and there was word that the number seventy
seven was going to be replaced. Had you got word
of that and they obviously changed their mind after your scored.

Speaker 8 (01:43:57):
Yeah, I'm not sure. I'm not sure to be honest.

Speaker 15 (01:44:00):
Obviously watched back the commentary and you mentioned that, but
I wasn't too sure. I didn't.

Speaker 8 (01:44:05):
I mean, you don't really get told until you until
your number comes up.

Speaker 15 (01:44:08):
But yeah, no, there's potentially that was a plan, but
happy enough that it went in, so I at a
few extra minutes.

Speaker 2 (01:44:15):
Excellent, excellent. Well we turn to today in the Central
Coast Mariners this afternoon, they're you know, obviously battling to
try and even stay alive in the race for the
top six. Do you believe, though they'll present you are
a pretty decent threat this afternoon.

Speaker 15 (01:44:30):
Yeah, for sure, I think any team in the A
League can present a decent threat.

Speaker 8 (01:44:33):
I think it's I mean, I think that's the beauty
of the A League. There's no easy games.

Speaker 15 (01:44:37):
Anyone can sort of beat anyone, and I think that's
what makes I mean, if you look at the table,
I think that's what's made it's so tight.

Speaker 8 (01:44:42):
As you know, teams are dropping points.

Speaker 15 (01:44:44):
You know, you say dropping points against a worse team,
but really none of the teams. Teams are bad, So
you know, teams can drop points at any time, and
it's obviously shown that this season if you look at
the table. So yeah, I think for sure that if
they're gonna present a tough challenge for.

Speaker 2 (01:44:59):
Us, you're locked into the finals obviously. How do you
how would you describe the belief in the group right
now as you as you off the regular season and
then look forward to finals football.

Speaker 8 (01:45:10):
Yeah, that's a huge belief. Still there has been the
whole season.

Speaker 15 (01:45:13):
Obviously, we know we've had points where we've dropped off,
and I think if you look back now at games
where we could have won, we could have you know,
maybe secured the league already.

Speaker 8 (01:45:21):
But that goes for all the other teams as well.

Speaker 15 (01:45:23):
It's just a part of the game, and I guess
it's a part of the league and why it's you know,
I feel like it's very entertaining to watch because any
team can bid anyone. So yeah, I know we're still
extremely motivated and we still know that the league's are
to win and then yeah for finals as well. You know,
at most we want to win, but obviously with the
top two as well, we want to have that extra

(01:45:44):
week off, especially with the with the injuries and stuff,
I think it will give us a real good chance
to get some of the boys back fitting ready.

Speaker 2 (01:45:50):
How much of a disruption has that been Lockey with
with players obviously some of them out longer term, you know,
the likes of Francis Devrez, we don't quite know when
he's going to be back. Others like Gzimo and Heiroki
who have sort of been in and out of the side.
How disruptive has that been? Nando another one obviously.

Speaker 15 (01:46:07):
Yeah, it has that been No, of course, I mean
any injury really it's it's even if it's a player
that's not you know, starting every game. O. The way
that we play and I think you know the way
that most teams play now the subs are just as important,
you know, they need to come on and make a difference.
And I think, you know, with a full strength squad,
we've got one of the best squads in the league.
So of course it's a it's a big disruption, but
the young lads that have come through have been excellent.

(01:46:28):
Saw the players that came on then last week, I
thought was unbelievable, So you know that the depth is there,
but obviously we would like to have, you know, going
into finals, in the last game of the seasons, everyone fit.
But yeah, hopefully, hopefullfully we do gain a few back
by the start of finals, which would be ideal.

Speaker 2 (01:46:46):
You mentioned Van for Terrist there Lukavisil, which is another
one Steve Corcus had to had to call on youth
to cover some of those those injuries. Did you know
having trained with these boys that they would be ready
for a league football if their chance came.

Speaker 8 (01:47:00):
Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 15 (01:47:01):
They're great players and I think, you know, when you're young,
you've almost got nothing to lose, and I think that
the you know, they really stepped up and you know,
for them, it's it's really exciting. I remember when I
was at that age and playing my first games. It's
it's such a good feeling. So yeah, we were we
were buzzing for him obviously, you know, I mean, apart
from obviously Luca made a mistake, but these things happen,
and apart from that, I thought he was excellent throughout

(01:47:24):
the whole game and whenever he's come on, he's been great.

Speaker 8 (01:47:26):
So yeah, he's he's gonna be He's gonna be a
great player.

Speaker 15 (01:47:29):
He's got a really good head on his shoulders as well,
and you know, even with that mistake, he straight away,
you know, I looked at him and he shrugged it
off pretty quick and kept playing, So you know, I
think he's, yeah, he's going to be a great player.
But yeah, it's good to have those players that we
can rely on and stuff, and obviously, yeah, at times
like this we need it.

Speaker 8 (01:47:47):
So it's yeah, it's great to have him.

Speaker 2 (01:47:48):
And you've had a period of time where you'll being
used as a as an impact player, coming off the bench,
back in the starting eleven. Now it feels like somewhere where, well,
I know you want to be how to tterminedo? Are
you now to to play a starting role for Auckland?
F C from now until until the Grand Final, winning
with the season ends.

Speaker 8 (01:48:05):
Yeah, for sure, very motivated to keep that spot obviously.

Speaker 15 (01:48:08):
Yea, I had a few weeks on the bench and yeah,
I think that I got my motivation a bit more
a bit back then than what it was. Maybe a
bit of a kick up the backside, but yeah, I'm
definitely keen to keep the spot now.

Speaker 2 (01:48:21):
And you came here at the start of the season,
I'm sure highly motivated. You know, what did you sense
from the team and what do you sense now as
you do approach the home straight and you look forward
to finals, particularly some of the boys who were there
last year and didn't quite make it to the Grand Final.

Speaker 15 (01:48:36):
Yeah, I think for those boys there's some big points
to prove obviously as well. You know, they've they've driven
out last year, so I'm sure there for them it's
a personal thing as.

Speaker 8 (01:48:46):
Well that they want to, you know, go on better
and and win it all.

Speaker 15 (01:48:50):
But yeah, for me as well, like I have, I
haven't won the league or won a championship yet, and
that's something you know, when I signed for the club
that I really wanted to achieve. So for me, yeah,
it's really exciting and I'm looking forward so hopefully doing
the double, which would be great.

Speaker 2 (01:49:03):
Well, the next point of business this afternoon it gets
to the Mariner is that go Media that lockeye always
great chat out to your mate, thanks for taking the
call and all.

Speaker 8 (01:49:09):
The best O Worries, Thank you mate, appreciate it, No, thank.

Speaker 2 (01:49:11):
You lockey Lockeybrook there from Auckland FC. This afternoon they
take on the Central Coast Marinders at go Media Stadium,
as mentioned, their final regular season game of the campaign
and then into finals they go. They will definitely play
finals and Vetnam is going to check the table and
I don't know that they can be caught now in

(01:49:32):
the top two. Well theoretically they can. If they were
to lose today and lose next week, they could drop
out of the top two. A point today a drawer
would be enough to secure their place in the top two.
Why is that important because you missed the first round
of the finals or the playoffs, the postseason, whatever you
want to call it. In the A League number three,

(01:49:54):
places number six and four, place five, those are elimination games.
The winners of those games go forward to home and
away semis against the top two. So Auckland FC finished
top last year. They still can finished top this year,
but they'll need Newcastle to drop points. Regardless, they'll look
to lock themselves into the top two. Then they'll look
at home and away semis and hopefully a Grand final

(01:50:16):
for Auckland FC. They didn't make it that far last year.
There's some deep determination inside this team to put that
right in twenty twenty five twenty six. From the Wellington
Phoenix's point of view, they finished their home season, if
you can call it that. They were in christ year
yesterday for a home away from home game. They finished
it in style. They beat the Western Sydney Wanderers two

(01:50:37):
to one in the last ever game of any code
at an elite level anyway, at Apollo Project Stadium. They
won two to one. That kept them alive, but only
until Melbourne City played Brisbane in the game immediately following,
and unfortunately for the Phoenix, it was Melbourne City who
won that game and therefore moved beyond the reach of

(01:50:57):
Wellington Phoenix. So the highest the Phoenix can finish seventh.
Only the top six make it through. So they'll play
their final game away at MCA Arthur this coming Friday,
and that'll be the end of the season for Wellington Phoenix,
but certainly some promising signs at the back end of
this season since the arrival of Chris Greenacre as interim
head coach. For now, you'd have to think that at

(01:51:19):
some stage in the next little while he will be
offered the gig full time. Twenty three minutes to three, Right,
let's get one breakaway, one final break or one of
the last breaks of the day away and then get

Speaker 2 (01:52:02):
That'd be nineteen away from three. What a weekend it's
been to Royal Pooner with supercars there for the first
time ever and in the second race of the day yesterday,
Matt Payne overcoming his start line blues, posting a convincing win,
overtaking fellow Kiwi Ryan Wood on the first lap and
winning resoundingly by eleven point six four to three seconds.

Speaker 14 (01:52:25):
And there's just.

Speaker 23 (01:52:25):
Something a little bit special about a kie We winning
on home term. Matt Payne wins at the ITM christ
Church Superfoot Body.

Speaker 18 (01:52:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:52:34):
Ozzie brock Feene second, Ryan Wood fourth, Wood, though still
leads the overall Jason Richards Trophy standings from Ozzie Brody Costeki,
who was fifth. A big race this afternoon, the Royal
poon of the Big sixty one lap of the top
ten shootout has happened and Matt Payne will start at
the front of the grid. Eric Thompson out of the
New Zealand Herald joins us from Royal Pooner. Matt Paynes

(01:52:55):
had quite the weekend DT We spoke yesterday about his
wheel falling off earlier in the day, so it all
turned out okay for him.

Speaker 13 (01:53:03):
Well, it's quite interest when the wheel falls off, so
you know you're in the pits of despair, but you
know you're sort of going, what the hell happened?

Speaker 3 (01:53:13):
There.

Speaker 12 (01:53:13):
How did that happen? And then you end up winning
the winning the next race, and then you come out
super fast. For Manny Pain was so fast finey.

Speaker 14 (01:53:26):
And that you know Q one and Q two.

Speaker 13 (01:53:29):
Before I got to the top ten shootout, there was
never any doubt that he was going to make the
top ten shootout. And then he basically just monstered the field.

Speaker 18 (01:53:36):
He was palpably.

Speaker 19 (01:53:40):
But even when the wheelower was still a smile on
the face. I mean that guy, and they've got the
car just so blue. It's it's almost a little bit
series for the other driver and the other guys you
know with the best propecas and then we could just
chat them behind them.

Speaker 10 (01:53:59):
There were everyone stays in the heads.

Speaker 6 (01:54:01):
They have no idea.

Speaker 19 (01:54:03):
Is just so fod the city odors right, you know
Ryan More.

Speaker 13 (01:54:10):
Another young two where you've been there and there about
get a run of.

Speaker 19 (01:54:13):
Unfortunately the last.

Speaker 10 (01:54:17):
More finishes, but he looked good.

Speaker 14 (01:54:22):
He was well loooked up.

Speaker 13 (01:54:25):
To finish the.

Speaker 12 (01:54:28):
Shut out. So I think we have two keys.

Speaker 2 (01:54:32):
Good to hear just stay nice and close to the phone. There,
Eric was one to make sure we can hear you. Okay,
you just got a bit of background noise there, but
just stay nice and close. So so Matt Paine will
start from the front of the grid, Anton deeper squally
and then Ryan, what as you say, sixty one lap,
how different is that with the with the you know,
the the longer race. Basically what what do you expect
to happen in the in the longer race? This afternoon?

Speaker 13 (01:54:55):
A lot more strategy will come into play, like a
lot more purely because you know, they've only had one
pit stop in the shorter races of thirty seven laps,
and now they're going to have two fit stops.

Speaker 12 (01:55:07):
It'll be some fuel involved.

Speaker 13 (01:55:08):
So but then the interesting thing is because the pit
lane is so narrow at NA, no double stacking will
be allowed, so they're going to have to manage. Each
team is going to have to manage when they bring
their drivers in, so they'll have to stagger them because
you know, in the past, we've all seen it, they
just line them up knows the stern and get them out.

(01:55:30):
They can't do that at UNA, so it's even more
for the engineers and the strategists and each team to
work out, well, who do we bring in first? And
then you know, let's hope there's not an issue that
if somebody comes in the next stepp it will be
not can't it'll be chaos in the pets because you
know it's the first time they've had to deal with that.
But strategy will make a big play.

Speaker 9 (01:55:52):
They're on this.

Speaker 13 (01:55:54):
They're on the soft hires this time, so it's not right.
They're on the super softs and the last race yesterday,
so it's it's going to be really really interesting. But
pain just looks in the roof and you know he's
a Baptist winner, so you know, you.

Speaker 12 (01:56:10):
Know, long distance isn't isn't an.

Speaker 24 (01:56:11):
Issue for him.

Speaker 13 (01:56:12):
But it'd be interesting to see how the tourts go
as well.

Speaker 2 (01:56:16):
Tell us about the track et. We're not as familiar
with it obviously some others being the first time. So
because it has been there, how does it compare to
Topol for example, it's.

Speaker 13 (01:56:26):
Dead flat, like there's like no elevation to Pay's got
a little bit of elevation. But Rupern is like an
old school effectually known as one of New Zealand's old
school goat tracks like Terra Tongre and in the Cargol
and places like that. It's quite tight a little bit technical,

(01:56:49):
but when they drop what's happened is because it's so
dry down here, pointing when they drop a wheel off,
you know, on the exit of a corner, the dust
and it's a really fine dust and stone and dirts
and stuff kicked up and Broddick Castecki was saying in
a press conference, he just said, if you happen to

(01:57:10):
be behind somebody who drops a wheel off, all four
wheels off, he says, you just can't see. So you've
just got to hope that you know place you just
can't see anything. It makes a great vision any of
the fans watching it when they see the dust and
the sun behind the dust. Yeah, it looks very much
days of thunder and you know all that sort of stuff.
But for the drivers there's a lot of dirt and

(01:57:30):
dust may be an issue, but then again, just make
sure you don't drop the wheel off. There's a couple
of places to pass, not many, and they've got large
what's called long radious corners, so there's a lot of
load on the outside tires and that's why we've seen

(01:57:50):
in the races so far some teams only changing two tires,
like you know, the front right and the rear right
just because of the load on the car, So they
have to manage all that as well.

Speaker 2 (01:58:03):
In terms of you mentioned there the opportunities to pass.
So how far back on the grid are we looking
to find our winner? I know we can't predict accidents
and things like that, et but you know, are we
going back as far as drop Feenie he's fifth on
the grid? Could he could he make a charge for example.

Speaker 13 (01:58:22):
He'd definitely be in with a chance with it without
you know, without a show.

Speaker 12 (01:58:26):
I'm just saying that, and I tend to agree with you.

Speaker 13 (01:58:29):
You'll probably get back to ten or eleventh place would
be okay, because because it's if it was a thirty
seven lapper, I'd probably go maybe the top three or four,
you know, or maybe even down the fifth might be okay.
But you know, longer races, more time in the pits,
more time for strategy to play out. You know, in

(01:58:51):
these short races, you don't get a good start if
you're not starting on the first to two rows on
the grid, it's really really hard. But because this is
a much longer race, there's a chance that you can
weave your way up through the field. So yeah, I'd
probably say anybody in the top eight to ten, it's
probably end of the chance.

Speaker 2 (01:59:11):
All right, good to hear and well, good crowds. You
talk to us about them. Yesterday, sold out on the Friday,
sold out yesterday, sold out today. I guess that says
it all, really, But what's the mood of the crowd
being They must love being able to watch supercars at
a brand new venue.

Speaker 13 (01:59:28):
I mean they've had a double whammy. It's actually a
record crowd for Rupuna. Sixty two thousand is the numbers
over the three days, so you know that's massive. It's
almost back to those helicon days at Wigram and ard
More in the sixties when they had the New Zealand
Grand Prix with all the international stars rocking up. So,
I mean it's a great result. But the fans have

(01:59:50):
been fantastic about just supercars being here. But when they
get a Kiwi winner like Pain, they just went off painting.
And Pain is constantly saying being able to wave on
the warm up lap and having everybody standing in the
stands yelling at the top of their voices for a
Kiwi winner. He said he could hear them, so they

(02:00:11):
literally just went off twenty odd thousand of them, just
all on their feet, cheering and yelling. You could hear

Kingdom of Fraud

Kingdom of Fraud

It’s the unlikeliest of criminal partnerships: a devout polygamist from an insular Utah sect joining forces with a shadowy Armenian tycoon from LA. The result - a billion dollar fraud conspiracy. In Kingdom of Fraud, investigative reporter Michele McPhee traces the origins of the extraordinary alliance between Jacob Kingston and Levon Termendzhyan. Together, the two men trigger the largest tax investigation in American history and weave around themselves a web of dirty cops, influential political relationships and transnational money laundering. All this is set against the backdrop of Jacob Kingston’s clan – The Order. A powerful and secretive polygamist organization in Salt Lake City. To whom Jacob is desperate to prove his worth.
