joined by All Black's assistant coach Tana umag Atana. Congratulations
on the win. How satisfying was that performance against an
Irish side that's consistently been one of the world's best
over the last few years.

Speaker 5 (02:12):
Yeah, it's funny satisfying. You know, I watched the game
this morning and you know, being out there last night,
I think we're we're happy with the win, but obviously
there's always things to work on. You know, we've improved
in this in the first three games, so that's you
know that that's great for the players and for us.

(02:34):
And it really felt like the test message was a
lot a lot on it, you know, playing in Eden
Park and and the threat of Ireland, as you said,
you know, one of the best teams in the world,
and you know they didn't die wondering out there, and
you know it was just a credit to them, but
also our boys were standing up to.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
It seemed to be a real balance between the physicality
and your attacking ambition. Did the game unfold pretty much
the way that you thought it would and hoped that
it would.

Speaker 5 (03:06):
You know, you always have a picture in your head
and of how the game would go, and you know
we knew that be you know, that'd be at us
with the ball in hand, and you know, they bring
a lot of line pressure, defensive pressure on us, and
you know, I thought our attack really keep their feet
and handle that as well as we could. And then

(03:27):
we just you know, we mixed it up well with
our forwards, you know, who worked tirelessly all night and
ours taking good options. So you know, it did play
out as we'd hoped, and obviously you're getting the getting
the result at the end of it, and you know
that's what you hope for and our boys worked hard for.

Is the team kind of starting to reflect the identity
that you're trying to build under this All Blacks coaching group.

Speaker 5 (03:58):
Oh look, you know, we definitely want to be seen
as a team that you know that shows what our
optimism around the way we play. And you know, we
know there's there's certain things that we can't get away
from and that's you know, as we've talked about the
physicality of the game and making sure we stand up
in those areas. But you know, look, in the end,

(04:18):
that's what people will judge us on and that's for
them to make that their opinion. But we want to
make sure that we're presenting ourselves and showing a showcasing
a kind of game that people will be proud of
in our country.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
How have you balanced the or struck the balance between
wanting to establish combinations, you know, the identity that this
All Blacks team wants to be under under you know,
Dave Rennie and the rest of the coaching group, but
also just going out there on winning test matches.

Speaker 5 (04:47):
Yeah, it's a fine balance. You know, it's a tough
one for some obviously, you know we're named thirty forward.
We didn't use all of those players in this campaign,
and you know that they were very important to us
in preparing our group and they're going out to these
these three tests, and you know, those guys that went out,

(05:09):
you know they understand, you know, the responsibility they have
and who they represent and knowing that they do it
not just for you know, our nation, but also for
this group of men that you know they're trying to
stake and make a name for us and what we're
trying to achieve. So you know, look, you know it

(05:29):
is tough, it's fine balance, but everyone understands what we're
here for, and you know, Dave and has done a
great job and making sure everyone buys into that. And
we're just going to be to make sure that you know,
we're keeping everyone informed of it, and I think that's
all we can do.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
You go off again now in terms of intensely presumably
anyway for tests and then another four matches against South
African franchise sides. It's a heck of a tour. What
areas of the of the All Blacks game? Do you
think we'll need to go up another level in order
to negotiate what's ahead.

Speaker 5 (06:00):
Oh, you know, you can obviously imagine they're going to
be very physical, as you know the South African rugby
traditionally is, and you know they're going to be sitting
over there waiting for us to come over. So you know,
we have to navigate making sure that all our plans
are ready for that they're ready for. You know, if

(06:23):
we think we're fanatical about rugby over here, you know
what it's like for some that would probably be touring
South for the first time. You know what it's going
to be like over there. And you know they're they're
passionate about their rugia as we know, and you know
that they're they're very proud of obviously being the number
one nation in the world for ragby. So you know what,

(06:48):
our guys are going to make sure that, you know,
we just stay focused on what we're about. You know,
as you'll see this stick true to what you know
we are and what our identity is we're trying to
achieve and who we are, So because that's what we're
going to have to rely on when when you can't
hear anything, you know, those cauldrons that they have there,
and you know, I don't know. I think one time

(07:09):
when I was over there, there's some oriagins throwing at us,
I think, So, you know, he just it's all part
of it, and it's something to look forward to, and
it's going to be an experience that these guys will
remember for the rest of their lives.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
I bet, I bet. Squad management is that going to
be quite important? You know, like I say, such a
busy tour, a demanding tour, how much of a challenge
is squad management going to be?

Speaker 5 (07:31):
Yeah, No, it's going to have to be really important.
You know, you play games, you know, four days apart,
and you know some guys will have to back up.
It's just going to be really mindful around those things
and injuries. And obviously there's the test matches at the
end of it that everyone wants to be a part of,
so you have to build that up and you know,

(07:53):
we've already had discussions around that. But as you know,
best laid plans can obviously come unstuck if you get
one injury in certain positions and things like that, and
so it's just the ability either you know, make sure
we've got some strong plans in place, but also the
ability to adapt and having our guys really at any

(08:15):
any incidant. And again, you know, I think David the
management done a really good job around making sure that
we are How.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
Are you enjoying it, Donna? I saw you just before
the game last night, about an hour before, just sort
of out on the grass there, and I wondered to myself,
I wonder what tata Umaga is thinking right now. I
don't expect you to tell me, but how how are
you enjoying the new role?

Speaker 5 (08:36):
No, it's oh, look, you know again it's I suppose
from a coaching perspective, it's one of these things that
you dream of, you know, I thought my time had
passed me by for an opportunity like this, and for
every thankful that you know that I got this opportunity,
and now you just want to make sure that you
do the best you can. So pretty fortunate that you've

(09:00):
got a good group around us in terms of staff,
you know, the playing group, just so some of my individuals,
you know, both on and off the field.

Speaker 4 (09:09):
When you've got the best of our.

Speaker 5 (09:10):
Country, you know, all together really focused on what they
want to achieve and making sure that we're a lined
across that. You know, some guys are I've never come
across and even though we've crossed path through rugby, just
just listening to them and in the way they talk
the game, it's it's just really uplifting for for a

(09:33):
coach knowing that you know, these guys are really locked
into what they're about and they buy into it, so
you know, and that's half the half, the half the
battle sometimes. But no, look, I was walking around Eden
Park last night just looking around and again, you know,
we've made it a fortress, but just probably a neary

(09:56):
feeling of you know, having walking around as a coach
now and I was getting a little excited around, you know,
a test match.

Speaker 7 (10:04):
That was coming, so you know that.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Those things are exciting. And again I'm pretty excited that
we got the result we were looking for. Otherwise I
could have been feeling a little bit different.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
I'm sure you still would have taken my call, but

You've heard from tanah oh eight hundred and eighty ten
eighty your thoughts please on last night but also the
last three weeks of the Nation's Championship. We've got a
body of work now with which we can can can work,
we can form some assessments, we can we can make
some observations based across three test matches, not just one.

(10:57):
France thirty four to thirty two in christ Church, Italy
forty seven seventeen in Wellington, Ireland forty twenty one at
Eden Park last night. Three test matches unbeaten.

Speaker 8 (11:08):
There.

Speaker 3 (11:08):
Now, if we're giving it a mark out of ten,
it's a very solid seven. Three wins from three, an
average of forty points per game, an obvious game plan
with ball in hand, and the development of that game
plan from the slight clunkiness. I guess you'd call it
in christ j Jen and Wellington to a much better

(11:29):
balance in Auckland last night. Within the squad, plenty of
competition for places in all positions. Rarely there are only
three or four. You'd say there's a definite number one,
half back, right wing, second five, number eight, roy Gard, Jordan, Jordi,
Barrett Adi Savez, the spine of the side, Lu said

(11:52):
prop probably Ethan de Greek playing very well, but still
a lot of discussion around the loose forward mix and
the back three. Plenty of depth at lock. A couple
of players knocking on the door as well, I thought
asafawan More was terrific last night, and with Cody Taylor
set to miss the first couple of weeks in South Africa,

(12:12):
might mount a case for starting at hooker. Although I
do love the impact that he provides off the bench.
I have to say too, the clarity with which Dave
Rennie speaks is just so refreshing in media situations. He
answers questions clearly, concisely, without any BS that has to translate.

(12:35):
You'd have to think into what's happening internally. I get
the feeling that there is absolutely no confusion inside the
All Blacks about what is required, no gray area about standards,
about game plan, about expectations, total clarity, which has to
be so comforting, doesn't it? For players? Here's what we
need you to do. Now, go out and do it.

(12:58):
Of course, there are bigger tests ahead, without a shadow
of doubt, of course there are. We're going to find
out over the next two months. Just where this All
Black side is at four tests against South Africa, three
of them in the Republic, and they've come at exactly
the right time. What better gauge could there possibly be
for a new coaching group and for the All Blacks

a year out from the Rugby World Cup, then a
tour like this of South Africa. I am very excited
about it. Starts against the Stormers in three weeks and
ramps up with the first Test in Johannesburg five weeks
from now, oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty. Let's
talk some All Blacks after their win last night over
Ireland and a clean sweep of their nation's championship outings

I would look just like to ask you a simple question.
What happens to your body when you see the All
Blacks do the Harker?

What happens to my body? I'm not sure I have
a physical reaction, Chris. I'm always very very proud to
watch the All Blacks do the Haker. I don't. I
don't necessarily get a shiver down my spine, as it were.
I've seen it a lot. Now, what happened? What of
reaction do you get?

I can see lots of things when I'm watching television,
all life, sport, but I see the All Blacks do
the Harker and it brings tears to my eyes because
of the passions for our country. Same as I followed
Ryan Fox last night scoring eight birdies and one shot

off being the all time greatest played in the open.

first three weeks of Dave Rennie's ragin, you can see
the trajectory. You can see the progress, the development and
the good thing to us to day. And he's never
shied away from what the game plan is. He's never
straight away, so he's ever going to play again. Just clarity,

Yeah, just wanted to chim my thoughts on the game
last night. Look after the first two tests, you know,
we're pretty scratchy that that was probably one of the
most clinical performances I think I've seen from the All
Blacks in the last two or three years.

Speaker 3 (18:59):
To be honest, clinical is a great word, casey, a
great word. I think a lot of parts of what
they did were exus actually that clinical composed, just very
well structured, I thought too.

Speaker 13 (19:12):
Yeah, yeah, and I think, you know, those first two
games were a bit scratchy. That the game plan has
been clear and evident, and then that's something we struggled
to see under Rasores coaching was just yeah, it was
it was hard to see what our game plan was
and what it was we were trying to achieve. And yeah,
I really enjoy the brand of rugby that we're playing now,

(19:33):
and yes, it reminds me a bit of the Lori
Main's era in the mid nineties. Just that that fast,
you know, running running style of rugby.

Speaker 3 (19:41):
Yeah, good comparison, good comparison. And I think also Dave
Rennie has said that they feel a responsibility. Yes, they've
got to win test matches and there are lots of
different ways to do that, but they have a responsibility
or feel one anyway to their fans to make it
a bit fun to watch as well, which I think
they are absolutely doing.

Speaker 13 (19:58):
Yeah, yeah, one hundred percent. But obviously last night bit
of a dress rehearsal for South Africa, so to speak,
with the likes of Tuop shifting to the flank in that,
I just wondered what your thoughts were on that starting
fifteen last night. Is there any one that you'd take
out of there for someone else going forward to South Africa.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
It's a good question. It's a good question. Let me think.
I think they might be a change in the second
row Josh Lord, much as he's been playing well. I
think Sam Dowie was very good in the first two
test matches. So if they are going to continue with
two por v at six, then I think Sam Dowrie
maybe shades Josh Lord in the second row. I like

(20:37):
Vie at six. Like you, I'd like to see them
continue with that. They seem very keen on Jacobson at
seven and obvious Yard he's at eight. Other than that
last night, no, I think Quinta Pie had a great test.
He and Jordi link up well. Roy Garden love happy
with that. Jordan McKenzie. I thought Morby had a good test. Yeah,
I'm just going through the fifteen for you case you're

(20:58):
really I'm pretty happy with it, mate, pretty happy. What
about you.

Speaker 13 (21:02):
Yeah, I certainly like the back line. I think Josh
Molby has done enough to lock in that left wing position.
I wasn't entirely sold on McKenzie at fullback and Jordan
on the wing, but it seems to be working. Tyrell
Lomacs a tidy end prop still but whether he's our
best guy there. But other than that, yeah, I wouldn't

(21:24):
change too much. If we were to run a six
two split on the bench in South Africa, how would
you execute that?

Speaker 3 (21:33):
I tell what I'd do, and I don't think they will.
But I wouldn't have a reserve halfback on the bench.
I just I know it's very risky because what if
Cameroy guard gets injured. But that guy can play eighty
minutes every week if you want him to. They won't
do that, I don't think case. It's just a little
bit too risky with injuries. But you know, depending on

(21:55):
the way they make up the back line. I mean
there's a lot of guys in the back line, the
starting back line who can play a lot of positions.
So yeah, I think maybe you'd go. I think and
Antonina Brown's been good. He can couple those midfield positions
and maybe a guy at the back who can cover
all three, yeah, or a half back and a Lenut
Brown if you're going to go six two, that might

(22:15):
just about cover it because you've got guys like Jordy Barrett,
Josh Morby if he plays, Damien McKenzie, Ruben Love even,
who can play a bunch of different positions. So yeah, yeah,
and they may well go sick. They may go six too,
you know, you know South Africa will and at least
one of the tests.

Speaker 13 (22:31):
Yeah, because it's funny you should say that about Roy
Guard playing eighty because that was my exact thoughts as well.
And worst case scenario if he does get injured, you know,
McKenzie's got to deputize at a half back. Worst case scenario.
But now I'm thinking along the exact same lines. I'd
give that a crack because they, like you say, Roy Guards,

(22:52):
if he's not playing eighty minutes, he's playing seventy seventy
five minutes. Anyway, they seem to want him out there
for the bulk of the game, and it's yeah, I
get this, there's a risk really year if he does
get injured five minutes of the game. Yeah, not in
a good spot, but yeah, it's something i'd like to see.
I'm not sure where Leroy Carter's at with his injury,

(23:13):
but there's another guy that could go into half back
at a pinch.

Speaker 3 (23:16):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely he could. I do like I do
like the idea of having of having players on the bench,
not just to cover injury, but what impact will they bring?
You know, you do all yeah, of course you have
to have to cover the possibility that one of your
starters is going to go down early. And last night,
of course we saw Cody Taylor go off before he
would have come off, you know, in a regular scenario,

(23:39):
and of course you got your reserve hooker there. But
in the backs case, I just like the idea of
a player, Okay, what's he going to add? Not how
many positions does he cover? What is that bloke going
to add? And you're back to the half back situation. Yeah,
and I'd be I'd be quite happy for for camera
Reguard to play the majority of minutes, but I know
that there's other things that play. Good to chat to,
you make call back anytime. We've got a big couple

(24:01):
of months ahead to to negotiate. Let's do it together.

Hey, look, a second week in a row of court unusual.

Speaker 3 (24:14):
Good to have you with us, Richard. Let's make it
a habit.

Speaker 13 (24:17):
Yeah, I'd like to.

Speaker 14 (24:18):
Hey, look, I looked at last night and I think
the last call summed up. It was reasonably clinical first half.
But I think there are a couple of things Artie
needs to take out of that, and that's in terms
of game management, because I thought the first half was
very free flowing and we were able to turn that
ball over quite quickly and keep it going. Second half,

(24:41):
I noticed the difference was the Irish were lying over
outside of the ruck and it was taking that extra
couple of seconds for the half back to go how
am I going to avoid this twap when I ball
out the back line? And that was an effect clinical slowing.
But it's a blueprint. Other teams will look at that
and go, well, it certainly broke the All Blacks rhythm,
and I think Artie needs to be able to go

(25:02):
up to the rest and say, hey, what's changed from
this last half to this half? Are lying on our
side not quite in the way, but they're doing enough
to just slow it down that little bit.

Speaker 3 (25:12):
One that I've noticed something. Yeah, sorry, Richard. One thing
I've noticed with Artie is is he does seem a
lot more willing than Scott Barrett to question the referee
and to open up what feels like an effective line
of dialogue. I'm not sure it always sat that comfortably
with Scott Barrett. It seems to do with Artie. And
you know, the point you've raised of making sure that

(25:32):
that stuff like that doesn't go on to the detriment
of the All Blacks game plan is a big part
of what captaincy is.

Speaker 14 (25:39):
Yeah, for sure, for sure, and it's just something I
think it's quite obvious it's going to carry on with
most teams we've played, because we looked very, very efficient
in that first half, and that's all everybody's going to
be concentrating is how do we break the orbleckxed rhythm.
The other thing I was I'm still I don't know
if you remember last week, I was a bit worried

(26:00):
about our loose forward Max and I think Tupu Vai
is got to be a starter on the blind. He's athletic.
Creates another headache for any team out wide in the
back line because he's got pace, power and he's a
good ball handler. But I still felt when we were

(26:21):
getting close to their line, we never thought it never
seemed to me, we're going to get a try here,
We're going to have it. Whereas when ever thee Iris
got on our line, which was five times, I think
five times they got on our line, and every time
you thought there's going to be a try, and they
got it three times. And we just don't quite have

(26:42):
that umph in the Type five. As far as I'm concerned,
I think we just need just that little bit more grunt,
if you know what I mean. And I don't know
where we're going to get it from. We're still just
lacking a bit of power. Perhaps Simon Parker on the
reserves he could cover lock as well.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
I thought Patty Tawer Polota gave us a bit of
grunt going forward last night. I take your point, Richard,
and look at me. You want you want mobile ball
carryers close to the line, thinksaving Amir off the bench
at it. For example, a Sophe Moore, you would have
been impressed with a try he scored. You know, with
the league drive that he's able to create. I think
that's something that he has over a Cody Taylor for example,

(27:20):
that that ability close to the line to just say
look out, boys, here I come.

Speaker 14 (27:24):
You know, oh look for sure and too Poluto I
thought made a big difference in our tight five. But
I think what was also quite apparent is he's a
one half player. He's good for one half and then
after that you've got to put some fresher legs on
under him. So that was my opinion, and I just

(27:45):

being defense coach and so the boys really did stood
up and it was really, I suppose really pleasing to
see that at that level of hardness. I suppose the
renstored to the boys there's a lot of confidence in
what they're doing. So that really showed last night in

You're just on the defense, they looked a lot more connected,
didn't they than they perhaps have at times during the
last two tests. How pleasing was was the defensive aspect
of the All Blacks performance last night?

Huge, I know everyone's been. It was the impressed. It
was the way we've been attacking, the intent to attack

against our defense lines. So that was definitely a key
work on for the boys. But I think they really
did answer that. I really looped back. I think there's

(45:06):
just real It looks like he's real clarity understanding of
what they're doing and which really builds that connection in
the defense line and which is the key part of
a defense structures him that connection. And last night we
just saw everyone just making really good reads, but more
so the one on one tackle. We we really did
step up in that in that part and really did

(45:30):
force to the attack of Ireland, which we know is
very strong. We we kind of pretty much distinguished that
amongst their dangerous players.

Speaker 3 (45:38):
We're only three tests in two Dave Reenie's tenure as
head coach, but are you starting to see his fingerprints
on the side.

Speaker 10 (45:46):
Absolutely. Look, I wrote much respect for for for Ends
and what he's done. You know, I was fortunate enough
to be coached by him for a couple of seasons
before for Fire left to Japan as such, but following
his career and seeing what he's done in the different
environments he's been in, He's won championships, he knows what
he's after, and and and he's really implement into that

(46:06):
and and it's cool because you can just see what
the boys are definitely buying in into into that space,
and they're all working together. And I suppose that even
the alignment here brings I suppose for the whole coaching
management they all look aligne and and and you can
just see that that's reflected in the players and the
way they play and the way they're just really enjoying

(46:27):
and enjoying the environment. And it's it's really yeah, coming
under they play in the weekends.

Speaker 3 (46:30):
When a new coaching team comes into a into an environment,
any environment, Peter, you know, how challenging would it be
for them to introduce their new ideas but also just
be very aware of the fact that they've they've got
to keep on winning these games.

Speaker 10 (46:45):
Yeah, exactly. I think that's that's probably the true test
of a coach coming into an environment, especially the Orbits environment,
where you do have talent spread across that come from
from you know, usually really high end supersides. So bringing
them together is the key and understanding how they want
to play. But I guess at the same time time

(47:06):
they know that the profiles of all the players and
what really kind of probably stands out has nothing's changed
too much of his game plan. It's it's suiting. The
profile of the players that he selected, I suppose is
probably the key for him and playing a style that
really suits each individual and and and there'll be little
challenges that each each individual will have to really execute

(47:28):
what Day wants. But I think it's in the right
way that that, like I said, the profile that in
terms of his game plan is suiting. So therefore the
boys are securing accordingly.

Speaker 3 (47:38):
Are there any specific players who have caught your rye
maybe you know last night maybe or across the three
test matches, anybody who you've been particularly impressed with?

Speaker 10 (47:48):
Look, I think across the board, I'd say I'm really
liking what they're doing with Reuven Love, I think paying
them and awfully tests starting him. You know, there's all
this huge debata around whill we know with his tangent
and Bone and barrat and with Tid mac at ten,
but especially at test level, I'm just saying we're in

(48:10):
lum just really settle in to a space game management
has been massive for us to really have a look
at how can he control the game. Seeing the different
areas and we know the skill set and the talent
Week has, but he hasn't overplayed it. And I think
that's been the real exciting part because in due time
that'll come and we know what he can do with

(48:31):
ball in hand and even in the way he can
create things like a lot expenses to do as such,
but he's just not he's not overplaying any I think
in due time we'll see him start come to come
to follow and when defenses start to shift that he'll
he'll shut through in that space. I suppose player I've
been really impresses movie. I think he's he's taken his chances.

(48:54):
Firstly with with coming off the bench. It's actually I
means starting starting last night. I was really impressed with
his defense reasons. I felt him and two player really
did work well. There was a real connection there and
I felt too, I had his best game at center,
knowing that he's only had minimum opportunities there. But see,
you know, some really progressions I suppose in this game

(49:15):
at center, which is really reliving because we have probably
probably the biggest area that we have pled in was
was the midfield. The right combination I supposed to Georgeorge
has been really solid by just finding that mixed playoff
costs most fantastic and in the forwards, look everyone's stood up.
I thought Darry's been fantastic playoff for Joshuad last night,
stood up in a big test with and good to

(49:36):
the big triple lot to coming back to his own
We know he's been earned with a lot of injuries
of lad in the super season, but seeing him back
in black last night now and going back to what
he gives us physic Cali and both attack and defense,
but also running through a whole straight and I felt
sorry for their poor last defender because there's no way
he was going to stop in place of the line.

Speaker 3 (49:58):
So off to Africa now is going to present in
a very different challenge. What areas of the all Blacks
game are going to be tested the most with the
next couple of months in South Africa, I think.

Speaker 10 (50:09):
Definitely, you know, I'll set pieces are fantastic last night,
but that's an area where the South Africans blocks really
do launch off. You can see that that's that's a
big platform of how they really dominate in the game.
And they are bigging physical and then they've bought skill,
you know, with addession of Tony Brown being in there
in the attack space so you can see how much

(50:31):
they've improving this both. The biggest thing that I think
when they come up to twenty two, I think the
Irish Dita trice again when when there's real momentum, it
would be the ability to stop that. We know the
South Africans across the board because the caliber bringing their
forward packs, as in, how do we make sure those
tackles will have to We can't really let them go forward.

(50:52):
We have to stop them and their tracks really slow
their board own. So we work back on back on
our feet and making sure that our structural defense structure
line has the ability to get off the line and
then make those hits doom in the backers effectively, those
the big four pack, as my thing was once I
get momenta, especially in our twenty two, they're very hard
to stop.

I think Quintu Pile last night was really, really, really good.

Jordy Barrett's been our first choice second five. I don't
think there's too much argument there, and Quintu Pia plays
mainly there for the Chiefs, so the move one out
to thirteen is not necessarily a natural position for him.
But I just I thought Quintupile was quietly tremendous last night.

He didn't necessarily stand out in you know, running in
the you know running in the loose saw or you know,
massive big hits, but his defensive reads and picked a
picked up on it there, the way that he and
John Moreby, in particular on that left side work together.
I thought Quinta Pie had an excellent Test match. Look,

I'm a big fan of Billy procterown I'm a Hurricanes
fan after all, but he hasn't quite yet made that
step from super level to Test level. Quinta Pia and
