Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks EDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
A company of James mcconey. Your Chiefs are going to
win the whole thing, James. They smashed the Hurricanes and
super point extra time, golden stuff. You're going to win
the whole thing.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Yeah, it feels like it, doesn't it, Piny good afternoon.
Looks like it's all chess Munna all the way that
we've got ourselves a bit of a convoy. We had
players missing, we were struggling to put together a strong side,
and then suddenly, out of nowhere a golden point victory

(00:44):
with Wallace a TSI, the tormentor of the Hurricanes doing
it once again.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yeah, did give me flashbacks to that semi finally a
couple of years ago, when he turned up at Wellington
Stadium and put on one of the all time great
performances by any player in any game of super rugby.
He obviously has had a really truncated season with injury,
but yeah, just quick as to react, wasn't he when

(01:10):
that ball deflected upwards. It wasn't a surprise at all
to see him in a in a in the middle
of a key moment last night.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yeah, there's a lot of ball watching going on there.
So the Hurricanes will be a bit disappointed with that,
a bit gutted. But I also thought they you know,
did they choke him and they getting rid of or
subbing cameroy guard when it was that ten minutes of
extra time required. I thought that probably wasn't the best idea.
But there I just want to talk about the Positives

(01:38):
and the Chiefs and one of the one of the
heroes I thought was it was Rion Paul. Now, look,
he has just been unbelievable for you know, a guy
who's just making his debut pretty much out of nowhere,
and I don't know as he related to Henry Paul,
Robbie Paul, or even Rue Paul, but he delivered. He

(02:02):
slayed to use Rue Paul lingo having to mark Jordy
Barrett one of the best players in the world.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Well you know he's t J Pettinara's nephew.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Ah, well do you go.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
So there is a there is there is there is
some pretty strong rugby blood flowing through there. Yeah, I agree.
I mean you look at that, you look at that
Chiefs Chiefs back line and you know, the familiar names
in there, and guys have been I mean, Quinta Pie
has been absolutely magnificent all season, hasn't he? In McKenzie,
even Tom Mooifiler has been around for a while. Paul,

(02:34):
he's very much the old man out in terms of experience.
But you I thought he gave a pretty good account
of himself at second five.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
Yeah, he got stuck in and he's cleaning out, is
defending hard. I mean that was the one thing I
thought that the Chiefs are really gutsy. They didn't give
all those X factor players like Fana, nor for Reuben
love Eth or you know, there was no room there.
Billy Proctor didn't get much room to breathe either, So
I thought that defensively they're really stood up. And of

(03:01):
course they're doing it for Luke Jacobson and his hundred.
They are real stall work for the club. But there
was something that was probably a humbling one for the
Hurricanes because they were counting their chickens a little bit.
I mean I could sense it from your voice last week, Piney.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Definitely I was counting like the count on Sesame Street.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
Absolutely, But it's good because this is what you need
in Super rugby, and I just think these two teams
have got an awse and rivalry going. I wouldn't be
surprised if this is the final. They really and Damien
McKenzie versus Reuben Love. I loved that battle as well.
Possibly mackenzie looked like he was about to give away

(03:40):
a penalty right at the death bear and that might
have changed the flip the script completely. But right now
I'm just going d mac for the all blanks number
ten Jersey, Why not?

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Yeah, I think he's got the inside running at the moment.
If the team was picked today, he would certainly be
in the team Jumper. I think, Hey, the Crusaders lost
again last night. I just picked up on this. They've
lost both of their games in Australia, both by identical
scores thirty one to twenty six to the Reds last week,
thirty one twenty six to the FOCE last night. What's
going on?

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Well, the Crusaders without Will Jordan aren't really the Crusaders
in my opinion. They're still a strong team, but talk
about a talisman, it's Will jordanstead of brings them all together. Really,
I think they're you know, the Western Force are better
than you think, And Zach Lomax looked pretty good as
an NRL convert on the wing, scoring a try and

(04:30):
sort of getting up and contesting high balls and stuff.
But the Crusader's minus well Jordan are one thing. But
what about the Crusaders minus fare horses. There seems to
be quite a bit of consternation about that down in
the Garden City, and I am concerned about what they'll
be like minus those horses. I know, apparently you've probably
done your research, Piney. There's too much I guess there's

(04:53):
no room for them in the new stadium, and there's
too much technology underfoot for the hooves to be trampling around.
But I also did notice that sometimes they used to
encroach on the dead ball area, and I imagine I
know that said it's fans love the horses, but if
a hoo a hoof print it's somehow diverted a ball
and the Crusaders had lost one of those titles, they

(05:14):
might be feeling different about those horses. It might be
like a you know, a Godfather situation with one of
them appearing in your bed.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
That conversation took a rather grimm and sinister turn. But
but yeah, no, no, not at all.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
No.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
We yeah, we had had a bit of a yarn
about this on the show yesterday, and yeah, I think
you're right. I think as far as I can see,
it's it's a space and a health and safety issue,
as so much seems to be these days. But yeah,
look new stadium next week, warratas. I think they'll be fine.
I think they'll be fine. I mean, there's no no
point running the Crusaders off because we do that at

(05:49):
our peril. Mawana Pacifica those though, this is this is
sad news that we're going to be without Mowana Pacifica
beyond the end of the season.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
In all likelihood, Yeah, I'm gathered by this. I really
wanted Majana Pacifica to work. They probably needed some high
profile people like Dwayne Johnson, Jason Molmore, and maybe just
a tech billionaire. I've been googling them and trying to
find a pacific A tech billionaire. I found a guy

(06:19):
called Mike Burks who's the founder of Upguard cybersecurity. But
you needed that kind of money, because this is the
problem with professional sports teams, especially ones that are trying
to find out a place in the world. If you
don't have the people the bums on seats and you
need those people with deep pockets. It's just a real
shame that it's happened. But there are investors around the

(06:42):
world who do want to get into Super Rugby, So
I'm just hoping that maybe for there he could be
some Cinderella story and perhaps the Americans who have always
talked about a lot of Americans who want to get
a Super Rugby team, maybe they want to invest. But
that's about the only hope I see on the horizon.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Yeah, I agree, and you do hold out hope. It
would be great if they could stay. It just doesn't
feel as though it's the most likely outcome. We wait
and see. To Brighten News, Charlie s led Your Walker
etching her name into history, the first kee We woman
to be drafted into the w NBA. She's terrific. A
I've just I love this story and I just can't

(07:22):
wait to see what's next for Charlie's Led Your Walker.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
Yeah, well this happened on Tuesday. I was down visiting
the Magnificent Chiefs and making sure that they had the
game plan right Pony and I was listening along on
my skysport now at and just listening like I was
listening to the cricket or something, just to see the result.
Draft at eighteen, she's gone to the Connecticut Sun. They

(07:46):
play in orange and so orange is the new black
for us. We're going to get that merchandise. And she's
been drafted with one of her UCLA teammates, Gianna Neapkins,
which is pretty cool. But she gets four hundred and
fifty thousand dollars in New Zealand minimum in her first year,
So this is just amazing. She's bied her times back

(08:06):
from an ACL can't be happier. And she's also a
big chief stand Oh she.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
I didn't know that? Okay, well that's that's even better,
even better from yeah, well, I mean, yeah, what other
team are you going to have? Can I ask you
about Tottenham? Look, I thought they were going to get
the win this morning against Brighton and Hove Albion. They
were two one ahead and we were into the fifth
minute of at a time when Brighton found an equalizer.

(08:34):
I keep on thinking, Okay, Tottenham will win a game.
They'll win this game, they win that game, Tottenham could
go down, could get relegated.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
Yeah, this is a massive story and I've been wondering
when we should talk about it. But it's five games
to go now, I think, pony, so it is time
to talk about it. Third from bottom. They're in a
battle with west Ham and Nottingham Forest by the looks
of things, and maybe one other team. But nothing's easy
in the Premier League, so they are actually in dire straight.
They haven't been down in the second division, let's call it,

(09:04):
since nineteen seventy eight. Is a Tottenham was probably the
best stadium in the whole Premier League. And it's a
massive story really, and even just letting their stars go
in recent years. I know Harry came on and to
leave Song Cheung Men and all that sort of. They

(09:24):
were guaranteed box office that team, and how the Mighty
have fallen is to see how far they go.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
Yeah, well, they always talk about the Big Six and
Tottenham were part of that Big six. You can't be
part of the Big six of you playing in the Championship. Look,
I got a few friends who are Tottenham fans and
I wish them all the best, but you know, the
team's got to start winning a couple of games. As
you say, they're one point behind west Ham and two
points behind Nottingham Forest. But both of those teams have

(09:52):
got a game in hand over them, so if they
were to win their games in hand, then it really
is looking a bit dire for Spurs. Look, I hope
they stay up and I hope Forrests stay up too,
because of course that's where Chris Wood plays, But that
one would that west Ham go down. And I've got
a few few friends or west Ham fans as well,
so there's really no good outcome here. I don't think no.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
And that's the whole thing. I think Spurs realized that
they aren't a legit Big six team right now. They've
got a few promising young players there, but they're having
to sort of get their head around the fact that
they might go down. It's you know, there are some
stars were charliston from Brazil. There's players in there who
can score goals, but really the Premier League there's no

(10:37):
free hits. And I've looked at the I think on
the last day they have to play Everton. Not a
bad inside. I think it's going to come down to
the last day.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
James always good chatting with you mate. Enjoy your Enjoy
your week at the top of the Super Rugby table.
