Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talks EDB.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
We're sports super Bowl sixty Tomorrow, twelve thirty pm New
Zealand Times, so lunchtime for us. The Seattle Seahawks against
the New England Patriots at Levi Stadium, Santa Clara, California.
These two met in the Super Bowl twenty fifteen, the
Patriots winning that one, and again they won Super Bowl
twenty sixteen and twenty eighteen. The Seahawks haven't been back
(00:34):
at the Super Bowl since that matchup in twenty fifteen.
Let's get you there with co host of the hugely
popular morning shift show podcast, Mark pered Mark. What's it
like in super Bowl City during Super Bowl Week?
Speaker 3 (00:48):
It's incredible, plenty. It's been building. It's been absolutely building up.
It was a bit quiet when we first arrived. We've
been here since last Friday, so we took on media,
media row and radio ra sorry and have been here
for the build up, I guess. But now the fans
have started piling into San Francisco and it's chaos. Is
it's busy, I think for those who have had the
(01:09):
chance to San Francisco in the last few years they
reckon it dropped off quite a bit during COVID and
the city come and lacking a little bossessed. Certainly in
the last couple of hours, that's for sure, because people
have started to set up. The NFL has taken over
the city. You can see super Bowl posters everywhere they've
got When the NFL come into town too, they just
they hire up buildings and entire buildings and they decorate
(01:32):
them and they they you know, it's just it's done
on such a massive scale. Everybody's aware that Santa Clara
will be tough place where super Bowl will be taking place,
and yeah, it's starting until everyone's getting excited.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Oh Ben, including yourself. I've seen your social media content,
absolutely loving it. You talked about radio row there. Man,
there's something I'd love to get to at some point.
What is this set up like for media covering Super Bowl?
Speaker 3 (01:59):
That's so hard to put in perspective, like, I don't
think we have halls as big as what they have
here in America.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
So if you can together, I.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Guess where they usually hold big boys toys or if
you're an upland and you get to arm ahead and
massive halls like that, that are just full of the
biggest names and entertainment, and they've all got big stages
set up to them.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
If you're ESPN, your CBS, no matter what they.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Worked for, they put these big stages together and they
have their guests, they have their.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
Hosts up there. They are all recording their shows or
going live onto the network.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
And then the easiest place for any celebrity or up
and coming artists or even athletes to walk around that
building once and you pretty much get on every single
platform there is to get on. And so yes, so
the biggest names just walking amongst a little old men
and my host on the morning ship, David.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
I know this has been a long held ambission of
yours to be in and around Super Bowl. Has it
been a bit of a pinch me week for you?
Speaker 4 (03:00):
Oh? Constantly? Constantly.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
I mean I think when you get to a certain agent,
I'm sure plenty of you can at the end of this,
so you're kind of kind of the dreams that you
have in like sort of stamped down or they start
to get further and further away. This one player has
been with me for life, and so to be able
to get here, to be able to see how it works,
and I'm just blowing away with the investment and the
amount of money and the amount of time and energy
(03:24):
that has spent and promoting the game, and I'm saying,
this is our big showcase.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
There's no rocket.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Left unto every single dollar that is possibly available to spend,
and the NFL takes over the city and goes, you
know what, this is a big showcase, and we're going
to spend money.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
It's our big showcase. And I've just felt that.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
So in terms of a dream ticking this off my
list of things I've always wanted to do, this is
the absolute top of the list.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
And so I've been blessed.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
I've been pinching myself constantly, just you know, running into
some of the players or just talking to some of
the players, getting photos with some of the celebrities. It's
just constant favor. Oh my goodness, I can't believe we
just did that. The other night, we got invited to
walk the red carpet for the NFL Honors Awards, so
we are. I'm standing next to Jerry Jones, who insta Cowboys,
the most expensive franchise in the entire world. He's worth
(04:14):
nineteen point five billion, dollars and little on me, little
on me standing there to him, and I was just like, wow,
this is this is crazy.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
It's you give me goosebumps even talking about it, at
least talk about the game itself briefly. Seattle Seahawks, New
England Patriots. Who are the favorites and how do these
two match up?
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Yeah, well, it's it's a funny one pointy because it doesn't.
It definitely feels.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
Like with them on offense, they're around that this will
be like a scedtle game.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
They are a bit oftensive theme.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
But you know, I saw the bookies were giving them
a four and a half point head start. I would
not be doing that here in the big game like this.
I think it's going to be a tight one. I
think the last thing you kind of wanted to go
back and forth with field goals. You can't want one
team to get out in front so the other one
has to risk it. But at the end of the day,
I do think it's going to be Seattle's game to lose.
They've got the they've got the bit of defense, and
(05:05):
as a lot of people love to say, defense wins championships,
it's when you have to go to that last moment
in the game and you can trust on the thing
that's got you there. Seattle'll be able to trust in
their defense. And that's what I'm picking. But I wouldn't
be saying it's four and a half, so it's probably closer.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
The other quarterbacks. You always obviously land on them when
you're looking for influential players. Drake May leading the New
England Patriots the Super Bowl second year in the NFL
could be the youngest quarterback ever to win it. Sam
Dunnell rejuvenating his career with the Seahawks, how do you
evaluate the quarterback battle?
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Ah, You know what, this is an interesting one. You've
got Sam Donald, who's you've just said, resirecting his career.
He's bounced around the league. He's probably one of those
you know, he's got that chip on the shoulder, and
when you've got chips on your.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
Shoulder, you always have to play a little bit more risky.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
And I think for there people were saying, Seattle can
make the Super Bowl if Sam Donald doesn't turn the
ball over, like just ride your defense through, which is
never gratest thing to have said about you if you're
the team.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
But understandable.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Sam Donald has been had up and downs, but he's
been pretty in the last few weeks and deserve to
be there. And Drake May young, plucky, and I think
for anyone who follows the NFL, that's just annoyed by
the fact that the Patriots have had to make wait
too long to get back to the big dance after
the Tom Brady era, and that's kind of annoying for
everyone else he follows the league. You're like a great name,
(06:26):
You've got yourself, a young star. He's plossing the MVP race,
and here you guys go again. Back into the championship
came and the franchises have never made the Super Bowls.
So yeah, there's it's a strange feeling. I think both
the players have the potential to either win it or
lose it for their team. But if I was backing
one of the quarterbacks to put up better numbers, I'd
say it's probably going to be Drake May and anyone
(06:47):
who's interested, you know, I would say he's going to
have to scramble a bit. I don't think. I don't
think that's Seattle team will allow the pass too much.
He's probably gonna have to use his feet, which is
interesting too because he's pretty quick and he can get
some yards they can rack up quickly.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Just to finish, Mark, youve followed American sport for a
long time, and I know you're deeply invested in a
lot of parts of it. We think and we know,
and it is Baseball is big. Basketball is big, the NBA,
ice hockey's big. But this is the biggest, isn't it?
Super Bowl is the biggest day on the US sporting calendar?
Speaker 3 (07:19):
One questions asked the NBA, you know, the fortune I
guess we watch more would be the NBA, maybe baseball
even But in terms of football in America, this is religious.
Is in the city is able to host a Super
Bowl like San Francisco has and is it just changes
the entire outcome.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
And I mean put it this way.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
We're invited to go along to what's called NFL House
and they set one of these up every single year,
and whatever city they're in our next year is our leaf.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
But I'll do the same again.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
They booked out an entire building, I'm talking like an
entire building is booked out by the NFL, and whatever
was in there is cleared out and what's put in
there is free drinks, free food for all their corporate hostings.
So any kind of sponsor, any kind of media that's
come from a certain country or whatever, they will bring
them into this building. And every night the last week
(08:07):
they've had free drinks, free food, and the entire building
is booked out with some of the most lavish furniture,
some of the great greatest paintings, and they just do
it so well, and they know it's their biggest, big event,
and when the world knows it's their big event as well,
there's as I said before, there's no rock less unturned.
They will spin, spend, spend, and they can. I mean,
these are billion dollar franchises. So when you've got a
(08:29):
final that's called the Super Bowl, you've got to make
it super good for everybody involved.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
And you can definitely tell that, Sam Francis. Over the last.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Probably three or four days, just the crowds have started
to pick up.
Speaker 4 (08:40):
We were just noticing before too.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
There's no homeless people on the streets right now where
we are where there was when we first arrived.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
Just things.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
The big NFL machine just starts grinding and you can
just see money flowing and big names walking around the streets,
including celebrities and athletes.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Well there's anybody who I would wish to be there.
It as you, mate. Regards to Jordan and to Brook
as well, and to you mate. Enjoy it all and
enjoy the culmination of what I'm sure he's been an
absolutely magnificent ten days.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
For you, mate. Thank you so much and I always
love to support.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Thank you, Poney, and for everyone watching you like you say,
twelve thirty, it's going to be in on Monday.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
You can watch it on TV and Z.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
They've got the they've got prest Super Bowl souper and
can watch it there and thank you.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
Yeah, I'm going to have to come home.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
I'm'll have to have a week sleeping and I have
to work out what my next goal is because you know,
I've managed to tack this one off my box, so
I don't know what else there is to do after this.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
I'm sure you'll find something great to chat Mark all
the best mates to day, safe, travel well and enjoy
it tomorrow. Cheers Pony, all the best mate chairs. Mark
peered there. Yeah, I've known Mark for a long time.
I'm actually in a former life. I guess you'd call it.
I was a I was a radio tutor and this
guy turned up and he was very raw, but he
(09:56):
knew that he wanted to be in the media, This
kid out of Gisbone. And you know, sometimes in hindsight,
it's always twenty twenty. You you think that guy's got
a bit about him, he might he might be something.
And that was Mark Peered And he has had a
long and widening road through various media platforms, has impressed
people wherever he's gone, has landed as I say now
(10:17):
with Jordan Arcolo and Brooke Rusco as the co host
of the Morning Shift Show podcast which has become very
very popular. And to hear the yeah, the excitement in
Mark's voice and to watch the footage of him being
told he was going to Super Bowl he was surprised
by the other two, just terrific. Yeah, just so delighted
(10:39):
for him. So Super Bowl sixty twelve thirty tomorrow, Seahattle Seahawks,
New England Patriots in Santa Clara, California.
