A tough challenge lies ahead for Dave Rennie’s All Blacks.

How do you assess the threat that Ireland will.

Pose to them while nothing's really been made on the
Irish team and sort of technically what they might possibly
be able to bring. A lot's been talked about the
rivalry and sort of what's happened in twenty twenty two
when they last when they won a series here, But
when you look at the sort of the cracks of it,
the Irish team haven't really been that Irish team that

came here in twenty twenty two and the Rugby World
Cup post sort of sixteen days and so there lies
the sort of question with the way Dave Reheni's side's
slowly progressing. We know that you know South Africa's down
the track. Well, it's the next sort of phase of
the Dave Ireni era. This Irish side has got a
lot to prove because they have just been really clunky since.

The Rugby World Cup. But they've still got a lot
of experience.

And that's the thing that s what makes it sort
of intriguing to me that a lot of it's been
talked around the rivalry, not necessarily the way that the
Irish are playing.

At the moment.

Let's look at the at the team that Dave Rennie
has named. In fact, across the three test matches, nine
players who have started all three tests, so quite a
bit of consistency there. But a couple of positions where
we've had three different starters, one of them the left
wing Caleb Clark against France, Leroy Carter against Italy last
week he got injured, had to go off. Josh moreby tonight.

How do you see the battle for that number eleven Jersey?
Speaker 3 (02:29):
It's interesting, isn't it.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
I mean, you're right, there's consistency in those sort of
hardcore positions, but that's one of that that stands out.
It's really a lot of competition and that's what's great
about And you look at the and Josh Mormy deserves
the start. The way he came off off the bench's
work rap. That's what a lot of people don't really notice.
And you know, ren spoke about it during when he

first came on. It's not the stuff you see on
the screen that you necessarily notice.

It's a setting up being.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
Able to be in a position where you open up
a little gap for someone else, and so that's up
for grabs. Lee were Ricardo obviously injured and you know
they often talk about when you get an opportunity, you've
got to take it.

This is one of those things in the number eleven Jersey.

I mean it's fair to say the other side of
it in terms of consistency for the fifteen and fourteen
fairly well, you know, sort of settled right now. But
when you look at the number eleven Jersey, it's up
for grabs for anyone. And you know, Caleb's on the
on the bench tonight. I like the way Josh. Josh
has gone about his business is he's.

Going to be energetic. He works really hard.

So they've got some options and it's really pleasing to
have that competition, within that healthy competition within the team environment,
which is fantastic.

Boden Barrett won't play a single minute in these three
test matches. What is Boden Barrett's role to play in
the All Blacks of twenty twenty six and in Deep
Millsy twenty twenty seven.

I'll go back to that point about the stuff that's
not on the screen. He pays plays an integral part, right,
there's the leadership men. He's well over one hundred test caps.
You know he might even end up seeing you know, Whitelock.
But the part that he plays playing right now is
look at where Ruben Love has got to you know.

A guy that's really steady.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
Yes, we're seeing a Ruben Love that's controlling the game
that you don't often see the person that's probably helping
him along that way, you know, sort of walking him
through different.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Sort of scenarios. Yes, and bringing that maturity out of him.
He'll get an opportunity.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
South Africa is around the corner, and yes, Richie Wong
is in the background as well.

He's going to play in PC.

But we often when when we see such a great
player and they're not sort of playing and what they
what they they bring a huge amount of experience into
the environment. They will mentor a guy like a Ruben Love,
he'll keep guys also like Damian McKinnon. Don't get me wrong,
I'm not talking as if he can't get out there
and play also because all that sort of takes as
(04:55):
an injury as well, and he could easily be thrown
in the start a game. And that's the quality of
that he possesses as Boat and Barratt. So right now,
whilst it's I wouldn't be frustrating. You want opportunity to
get out there. But he's also he will understand you know,
the role that he plays and it's an integral part
of the of the environment and the culture that they

are slowly building in the Dave Reni era.

Again, we've got options and I think what's really pleasing
for me is seeing the way that Rubin Love's playing.
But we know what he can do. He can be
as when he first came on he was flamboyant who was.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
A little bit around it. We had not seen any
of that.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
He's just been really calm and composed like your normal
sort of well not normal.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
I sho didn't say normal, because what is a normal.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
For his five You're like, but these are the play
he doesn't need to really sort of chance his arm
a little bit. So to come back to your question,
those two are going to be the guys that are
competing for Richie.

They know, we know that.

All black coaches like what they see. They're like what
he's kind of done. But he still has to prove
himself in his quality as well. He'll understand that too.
It's not that all black jersey's never given to you
when you go away, and Richie's a competitor in himself.
We know what he can bring. I'm loving the way
Ruben loves controlling the game and I talk about their
word and maturity because you have to, man, it's a
it's a tough position, the outside noise that comes with it,
(06:40):
but also the amount of experienced guys that he's got
around him.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
He's got to, you know, he's got to make the
decisions when these four different decisions sort of.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
You know, know, on his shoulders at the end of
the day, when the captain looks at what are we
going to do? He has to make that decision, and
that's the maturity. I'm really seeing and Reuben loving I'm
loving it.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Simon Parker hasn't got a game either, and just on
the blindside flank. I talked about left Wing having had
a few different owners, Peter Larkeye, Wallace a Tt and
tonight to Paul Vati in the number six jersey. What
you read on on what Dave Rennie's looking for from
his number six inside his loose trio.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
I think one thing probably for me from my observation
is there's no real sort of pattern in terms of, hey,
you have to be this type of player in six.
We know what seven and eight kind of looks, so
Luke Jacobson, And how amazing is that when you've got
the backing of your coaches, the role that you play,
He's a different player in this environment, and then the
chiefs has a lot of expectation on him. He's probably
(07:39):
in the close quarters, you know, trying to win that
battle of the of the physicality sort of side of
it in the all black environment. When he knows his
role and the role that the all Blacks want him
to play, perfects it right, and he's been outstanding. I
look at two po white coming and this is with
the options right, If I'm.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
The Irish side. We haven't talked about a lot about
how a play.
Speaker 4 (07:59):
You want to slow the game down, Okay, you want
to go to line out some You've got you know,
Ryan and McCarthy in the middle of the air. You've
got some big boys around also in the Lucy department.
I think one thing that sort of stands out is
you want to have lineout options. So if they're going
to go to line out options and expect you all
blacks to come out of your half, you've got two
bo y You've got you know, the Petrich through below too,
and also Josh Lord, you've got some physicality there as well,
(08:24):
you know, especially when you look at Burn and on
the other side Fundafley, who just fetches over the ball.
So I think and looking at it, what Dave Reeny
is trying to do is bring something different to each
sort of game, and we kind of did it when
we're kind of the air. You're not always saying, hey,
this is your set loose forward number six for this game.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Yeah you're not.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
You're not making wholesale changes. You're not saying it's a
whole new three. That's what I like about it. It's
just a six. But What it also creates is a
healthy competition. Simon Parker will get an opportunity and who
probably possibly come into the fold when they go to
South Africa because his big body, he can you know,
he lights going and then and maybe dent the line
a couple of times. But I like the way when
(09:06):
he's gone about it. He's actually picking guys based on what.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Might happen, and they're going to be your point. It's
not just defensively. On attack.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
You've got a little bit of freedom into Bovai, you know,
on attack and defense.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
When the Irish.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
And defense, you can send them up and that really
disrupts the Irish flow.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
So I like that. I like the way he's going
about it. The one big thing that I.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
Would say that is standing out big time is the start.
They have not started well, and I think that's where
they want to get things right, because you cannot afford
to start the way that they have. In the last
couple of games against an Irish side that are going
to come here, they know everything's against and the fortress
is up up for grabs thirty two years since anyone's
sort of won here, and so they've got to get
(09:51):
that right because it's hard to chase a game down
against quality opposition, particularly when you're fourteen twenty odd points down.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
One aspect of the All Black game that doesn't seem
to have been completely correct to just is the high
ball and the way they deal with the high ball
are still a work on. You were so good under
the high ball, what are the key ingredients to being
good in those situations and a particular defusing opposition bonds.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
It's not as it's not as easy as what people think, right.
Speaker 4 (10:22):
I mean you tend to look at it and think, well, hey,
just get up and jump, and there is a technical
aspect about you jumping.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
Through the air as opposed to just straight up and down.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
A lot of it has to do around sort of
putting pressure on the kicker, how they how they implement
the air kind of kicks into trying and give you
that sort of head start guys getting back and helping
the lines you kind of take. So when we used
to analyze it, it was like, what are the kickers
doing from their side? Because for me, as a fullback
of it, I'm going to get a high ball. I'm thinking, man,
you guys got to do your work up front. So
(10:54):
then it gives me an easy sort of jump right.
These days things are a lot different. You know, they're
almost protecting the halfback, so you're going to get a
quality kick away.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
So that's where I sort of that. I suppose the
complexity comes into it.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
There's a hardier and it is one of the years
that I'd have to agree that we haven't quite nailgy
was getting through the air and be able to take
those tyeballs. And it's something that's going to come and
there's no doubt that's going to happen tonight, particularly and
when we get to the Republic. I mean they're perfectionists
edit right, And so it would be an area of that.
(11:25):
I'm sure that the all black environment are working really
hard at.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Will Jordan passed Doug Howlett last week as our all
time leading Test tri scorer. You played a lot of
Test matches with Doug Hawett, You created a lot of
his tries. He told me this on the radio on Monday.
What was he like to play with Doug Hawllett? And
does Will Jordan have some similar traits?
Speaker 4 (11:44):
Oh yes, absolutely, just a real neck for the line,
like understanding and anticipating where I mean he might be
on the right hand side and all the players on
the left hand side. I could be standing there thinking, oh,
nothing's happening here, and I look up and Dougie's already
on the other side because he's anticipating someone making a
break there. I mean, I mean, he was quite clear
because he didn't tell me any of the secrets until
(12:04):
possibly when I got to my fiftieth, which is I
was a little bit disappointed about, right, But there are
there are similar traits there, you know, with with Will
as well his speed, his ability to chip and chase,
and I just love his work great. And in an
environment that's sort of where wingers are scoring tries on
different sides of the field, you're almost seeing like what
(12:25):
Dougie had seen way back then when you're all you're
told is a winger.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Stay on your own side.
Speaker 4 (12:30):
Yeah, you're seeing that all the time in terms of
the what the wingers can do. So it's wonderful to see,
uh to be a part of what Will done last week,
and then.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
He is, he has.

No downe in my mind, He's going to keep going
and scoring, scoring lots and shies before he's done and
does it, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Yeah, all right, final question the mealsy Apart from winning
the Test match tonight, what will have to happen for
all Blacks fans to have a fair degree of confidence
about this team as they head off to this massive
tour of South Africa.
Speaker 4 (12:57):
Oh it's always hard that one, a because people want
they based sort of feeling good about the team, about
the score. I don't think it's necessarily I'd love to
see them as a relatively nice day here in Auckland
so far. I'd like to see some of those little
things sort of click. You know, there's there's lots to
like about the rhythm they're getting into three or four
(13:20):
weeks now in camp, you know, those those little areas
of sort of those bulls sticking and guys getting in
right positions. For me, really it is it's that dominant display.
I'd like to see their defensive line really being tested
tonight and stand out, you know, not so much from
a you know, conceding points, but dominating.

You know, like we used to see. Is nothing better.
Speaker 4 (13:43):
Than when you're sitting at the back as a fullback,
or when you don't want to make tackles funny and
your big boys are just snotting guys, and that's where
what I want to see tonight from the or BLECKX
and there's certainly guys that have been picked and selected
in the pact that I think can do that job.

to go to line out options and expect you all
blacks to come out of your half, you've got two
bo y You've got you know, the Petrich through below too,
and also Josh Lord, you've got some physicality there as well,
(08:24):
you know, especially when you look at Burn and on
the other side Fundafley, who just fetches over the ball.
So I think and looking at it, what Dave Reeny
is trying to do is bring something different to each
sort of game, and we kind of did it when
we're kind of the air. You're not always saying, hey,
this is your set loose forward number six for this game.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Yeah you're not.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
You're not making wholesale changes. You're not saying it's a
whole new three. That's what I like about it. It's
just a six. But What it also creates is a
healthy competition. Simon Parker will get an opportunity and who
probably possibly come into the fold when they go to
South Africa because his big body, he can you know,
he lights going and then and maybe dent the line
a couple of times. But I like the way when
(09:06):
he's gone about it. He's actually picking guys based on what.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Might happen, and they're going to be your point. It's
not just defensively. On attack.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
You've got a little bit of freedom into Bovai, you know,
on attack and defense.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
When the Irish.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
And defense, you can send them up and that really
disrupts the Irish flow.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
So I like that. I like the way he's going
about it. The one big thing that I.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
Would say that is standing out big time is the start.
They have not started well, and I think that's where
they want to get things right, because you cannot afford
to start the way that they have. In the last
couple of games against an Irish side that are going
to come here, they know everything's against and the fortress
is up up for grabs thirty two years since anyone's
sort of won here, and so they've got to get
(09:51):
that right because it's hard to chase a game down
against quality opposition, particularly when you're fourteen twenty odd points down.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
One aspect of the All Black game that doesn't seem
to have been completely correct to just is the high
ball and the way they deal with the high ball
are still a work on. You were so good under
the high ball, what are the key ingredients to being
good in those situations and a particular defusing opposition bonds.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
It's not as it's not as easy as what people think, right.
Speaker 4 (10:22):
I mean you tend to look at it and think, well, hey,
just get up and jump, and there is a technical
aspect about you jumping.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
Through the air as opposed to just straight up and down.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
A lot of it has to do around sort of
putting pressure on the kicker, how they how they implement
the air kind of kicks into trying and give you
that sort of head start guys getting back and helping
the lines you kind of take. So when we used
to analyze it, it was like, what are the kickers
doing from their side? Because for me, as a fullback
of it, I'm going to get a high ball. I'm thinking, man,
you guys got to do your work up front. So
(10:54):
then it gives me an easy sort of jump right.
These days things are a lot different. You know, they're
almost protecting the halfback, so you're going to get a
quality kick away.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
So that's where I sort of that. I suppose the
complexity comes into it.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
There's a hardier and it is one of the years
that I'd have to agree that we haven't quite nailgy
was getting through the air and be able to take
those tyeballs. And it's something that's going to come and
there's no doubt that's going to happen tonight, particularly and
when we get to the Republic. I mean they're perfectionists
edit right, And so it would be an area of that.
(11:25):
I'm sure that the all black environment are working really
hard at.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Will Jordan passed Doug Howlett last week as our all
time leading Test tri scorer. You played a lot of
Test matches with Doug Hawett, You created a lot of
his tries. He told me this on the radio on Monday.
What was he like to play with Doug Hawllett? And
does Will Jordan have some similar traits?
Speaker 4 (11:44):
Oh yes, absolutely, just a real neck for the line,
like understanding and anticipating where I mean he might be
on the right hand side and all the players on
the left hand side. I could be standing there thinking, oh,
nothing's happening here, and I look up and Dougie's already
on the other side because he's anticipating someone making a
break there. I mean, I mean, he was quite clear
because he didn't tell me any of the secrets until
(12:04):
possibly when I got to my fiftieth, which is I
was a little bit disappointed about, right, But there are
there are similar traits there, you know, with with Will
as well his speed, his ability to chip and chase,
and I just love his work great. And in an
environment that's sort of where wingers are scoring tries on
different sides of the field, you're almost seeing like what
(12:25):
Dougie had seen way back then when you're all you're
told is a winger.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Stay on your own side.
Speaker 4 (12:30):
Yeah, you're seeing that all the time in terms of
the what the wingers can do. So it's wonderful to see,
uh to be a part of what Will done last week,
and then.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
He is, he has.
Speaker 4 (12:40):
No downe in my mind, He's going to keep going
and scoring, scoring lots and shies before he's done and
does it, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Yeah, all right, final question the mealsy Apart from winning
the Test match tonight, what will have to happen for
all Blacks fans to have a fair degree of confidence
about this team as they head off to this massive
tour of South Africa.
Speaker 4 (12:57):
Oh it's always hard that one, a because people want
they based sort of feeling good about the team, about
the score. I don't think it's necessarily I'd love to
see them as a relatively nice day here in Auckland
so far. I'd like to see some of those little
things sort of click. You know, there's there's lots to
like about the rhythm they're getting into three or four
(13:20):
weeks now in camp, you know, those those little areas
of sort of those bulls sticking and guys getting in
right positions. For me, really it is it's that dominant display.
I'd like to see their defensive line really being tested
tonight and stand out, you know, not so much from
a you know, conceding points, but dominating.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
You know, like we used to see. Is nothing better.
Speaker 4 (13:43):
Than when you're sitting at the back as a fullback,
or when you don't want to make tackles funny and
your big boys are just snotting guys, and that's where
what I want to see tonight from the or BLECKX
and there's certainly guys that have been picked and selected
in the pact that I think can do that job.
Speaker 2 (13:58):
