Jude Bellingham is England's hero after bagging a second consecutive World Cup brace to beat Norway 2-1 in the quarterfinals in Miami.
The winner came three minutes into extra time after scores were locked at 1-all at the end of regulation.
Western Springs football director Scotty Hales joined Piney to discuss the win - and whether football could come home this time.

What did you make of this morning? I mean, before
we drilled down into some of the specifics of the game,
did England deserve to win the game?

Yeah? I think they did. Yeah. I think you know,
they had majority of control in the in the first half.
They kept you know, the big man Erling Harland very
very quiet and obviously he's a massive threat and has
been willed all the World Cups so far. So yeah,

I believe England deserved to go through. I don't think
it was a great performance. I don't think they've performed
particularly well for majority of the World Cup apart from
against Mexico. But I do think that the game against
Mexico has pulled the group together and go a goal
down and then you know, coming back to win two one.

I think I think has galvanized the group. So I
do think they were worthy of going through.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Yes, in tournament play, Scotty, does it actually matter if
you don't play brilliantly every time? That's not really tournament football,
is it. Tournament football is just getting through to the
next game however that might happen. So are England actually
playing pretty good tournament football?
Speaker 3 (02:32):
I think that's I think that's such a big debate obviously.
I don't know if many people watch the interview at
the end with the manager, but obviously he was very,
very annoyed and upset around just the untidiness of play,
and I think that's the difference between playing well or

playing untidy. I think England were really untidy today, but
I you know, I do believe that they were good
enough to go through. Whether it comes down to do
you need to play well to you know, to win
football matches or go through. I think we've seen across
the whole World Cup where teams haven't played particularly well

or an opinion of playing well and still go through.
So I don't really think it's about playing well. I
think it's about getting through to the next round. But
I do believe that, you know, when there's a lot
of untiger us like there was this morning, I think
that there's a definite room for improvement around that.

Yeah. I heard Thomas Tukle's postmatch and we've played a
couple of clips from it this afternoon as well. He's
a notorious perfectionist though, isn't He's got it and it's okay,
you know, it's not a bad trait for a coach.
So if we flip that, then if they're not playing
that well, if they're a bit untidy, but they're into
the top four or the semi finals. Is there more

improvement to come? Which is the source of a bit
of optimism.

Well, I think every time, well virtually every time they've
been tested so far in the World Cup. You know,
you look at the game against Norway, you look at
the you know, the the game against Mexico, which was
you know, as far as an Englishman goes, that's the
that's the best performance in English team in in you know,

since I've been alive that England have put on and
they keep they keep getting through, they keep getting over
the top of these teams, and the resilience and the
mental strength of them to keep getting through. I just
think that they're I just think they're in a different stage.
And I think that every team that they come up against,

they do find a way, or Bellingham finds away, or
the team finds a way to just get through. And
you know, even even in the extra time when we
went to one and then obviously then the penalty gets
you know, we could have gone three to one, but
still there, I still look at it and think, I
don't believe we're going to concede.

Joey Bellingham you mentioned his name there once again, just
stand out only what twenty three years old? Goodness may

It's crazy to think that that we were debating, or

number ten around the world for England. You know, can't
I can't go back too far with thinking that he's
he's probably the best English midfielder that we've had in
a very very very long time. Is in a box
to box complete midfielder. Like the game against Mexico showed,

you know, rolling the sleeves up and you know, making
slide tackles, last dich tackles and then today you know,
popping up with two goals, one of them you know,
breaking absolute power to get past the great first touch,
power to get buster to player, then a left footed
strike and then like you say, just like a bit
of a poacher's goal at the other end. It's like interesting,

you know that he can do those kind of things.
I just, you know, I think someone messaged me this
morning saying, I think that he plays like every English
person kid's dream when they're older to play for England.

It's a great it's a great description because yeah, he's terrific.
Who else though, Scotty and I mean Harry Kane didn't
really have a sarte a goal this morning, but still
played his part all over the place. But who else
this morning? Did you think, you know what? That guy
was pretty important for us today.

I still go back to the you know, you've got
to have a good goalkeeper, and I you know, Pickford's
now the you know, the most capped England player in
a World Cup. I think I read a stat this morning.
I think Jordan, but I think he's on It was
eighteen games he's had in a World Cup. So I
can't go past Jordan Pickford for what he does, even
though he gives me the hebgb's when he comes running

out and screaming, But he's a goalkeeper. So you know,
that's that's part of that's part of being a goalkeeper.
You're not you're not quite all there. Sorry to goalkeepers,
but you did right. I think that, you know, Jordan
Pickford sound at the back. I do think Nick O'Reilly
was really really good today and but you know, you

can't go past Anderson in midfield. I thought he was
superb today in the amount of ground that he covered,
whether it was starting play, whether it was dropping in
and controlling the tempo, or whether it was making tackles.
And then you flipped to a you know, we went
with one six and he flipped to an eight and
then he's arriving in the box. I thought Anderson was

absolutely superb today as well as well as Jordan Pickford,
who who did really well in golf for us. And
you know, I think there's the old saying that you know,
goalkeepers up their best game when they don't have a
shot to save, and I can't remember too many shots
that he's got to save.

It's very very difficult against Argentina tactically, We've got to
get it spot on. I can't see I can't see
too Schul changing too much. Despite his emotional outburst at
the end of the game. I think he's probably going
to go with virtually the same as what he is,
what he started with today. But maybe you know James

comes in. But look, you know, Argentina have got the
best player in the world that's ever been arguably in
Leonel Messi and I. You know, you've got to keep
your eye on him. But they're going to be tough.
They've got They've got a lot going forwards. They're very
hard to break down. I just I just think that

it quite a lot, but it just has a it
has a feeling to it that's galvanized the group and
what they did today tough conditions in Miami against Norway,
I can't see England losing.

What about on the other side though, France v. Spain,
that is a heavyweight semi final in the eyes of many,
are the two favorites pre tournament. I think a lot
of people said, okay, France and Spain are the favorites,
they'll meet in a semi final. Would the winner of that,
regardless of who comes through the other side, be favorite
to win the World Cup Final?

I don't know, Like you see more now that the
you know, the games have gone on and now you
can see, you know, with England and obviously Argentina leading well,
I think they're leading at the moment, they're leading five
minutes ago. The France of the Spain games is going
to be an unbelievable game with France being you know,
in control, but also can counter so fast with them

Belli and then Bape. But at the same time, like
they've got to get the ball off Spain. I think
it's one of those games where Spain they're going to
have the ball a lot more than France, and France
are then going to try and counter on them in
Spain have got to be set for like second phase
and definitely the transition. But if Argentina were to go

through play England and then you know the four when
you go Spain, France, England and Argentina. It's I don't
know who you could pick. I really don't.
