Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talk said B direct from News Talks Edb's
team at Tolimance The bee Hive Buzz.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Joining us this morning for the bee Hive buzzes News
Talks dB political editor Jason Wall's good.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
Morning, Jason, Oh, good morning Nick.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
How are you great?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Thank you? What did you do on the weekend? It
was really exciting, exciting. Please find me up well. Welcome job.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
I actually listen to this. This is me in my
early thirties married life. Me and the wife went blueberry
picking out in silver Stream. We got a nice little
airbnb out there, just a part of Wellington that we
haven't really explored, and went blueberry picking. There was a
place with E news as well, and got about three
kilograms of blueberries. So if you need some blueberry jam, Nick, well,
first I need to figure out how to make it.
(00:56):
But i'm your man.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Wow was it were the blueberry sweet? They were?
Speaker 3 (01:02):
They were good? So you right at the back, you
got to go find the good bushes. And I picked
them and eating them as I went, and it was
it was fantastic. So I'm sorry this doesn't fill you
with Oh no, I love it. It's just my uh.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
I'm gonna I'm gonna go out and do some blueberry
picking myself. I'm going to find I'm gonna google it.
After show. Let's talk what's happening at the Beehive. White
Tangy Day is on Thursday? Anything big with you know
last year they had that big function and where was
it in Wanaka that I watched for about three hours
and it was amazing. What's the big deal for this
(01:35):
White Tangy Day?
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Yeah, well, I mean the big there's two big things there.
It's about who's coming and who's not coming. Who's not
coming is obviously Prime Minister Chris Luxon. He's always said
that he's not going up to the White Hongey grounds
to commemorate the day. He said that he's taking lead
from other Prime ministers who go to other They go
to other marai across the country to celebrate White Honey Day.
(01:56):
And we've just had a statement from the Prime Minister's office.
He's spending White Honey Day with my tahu at the
Nuku Marai on the Bank's Peninsula down there in christ Church.
So he'll be going along there and he'll be doing
the usual sort of White Hongy Day festivities, but he'll
be a long way from the Treaty grounds, which is
way up north, and that will be Erica Stanford, Kama Portaka,
(02:18):
Paul Goldsmith, Mark Mitchell and then I think they're still
kind of crossing the teas and dotting their eyes with
which other ministers will be up there, So there will
be some government representation, but there will also be quite
a lot of Green Party representation because Madame and Davidson,
who took some extended sickly from Parliament last year after
her cancer diagnosis, is back and she'll be making her
(02:39):
political debut for the year at White Honey Day later today,
at White Honey rather later today, so it's the first
time that we've really seen her. She did a media
interview over the weekend, but now she's back, so good
luck be quite the focus up there today.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
I'd say, oh, good luck, and I hope that her
health and her journey's great. I'd kind of like I'm
lost a little bit though, with the Prime Minister not
going in there. When David Seymour, I meant he's got
hasn't he turning out? Myself? I mean, if I was
his advisor. I'd say, you keep it well away from
white hagy On on White hagy Day. But he's going
(03:15):
up there.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
Yeah, and they make quite as well have said that
to him. But I think of the attitude that he's
taking is that he needs to be able to front up.
You know, he's the one that's fronting the Treaties Principal's bill,
he's the one that's been a source of a bunch
of the backlash over that, and as leaders, you've got
to show up even when it's good or when it's bad.
So I think he's taking a page out of that
playbox book. It's going It's not going to be easy
(03:38):
for him. He's not going to get an easy run.
In fact, I think it probably will be one of
the hardest runs of politician we'll get at White Ungy
since the days of Helen Clark went up there, and
we all know what happened then. But I think that
you know, he's right to front up, given that he's
the face of all the opposition here.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Is anyone a little bit nervous about it? I mean,
we've had dildos throwing, we've had dirt throwing, we've had
some pretty serious stuff, well not you know, not serious
as in violent, but pretty big statements made. Is anyone
concerned that this could could turn ugly?
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Well, I'm sure the prime Minister's well, the prime Minister's
is not going but the security details of ministers and
the police will be clear, keeping a close eye on
things and obviously, you know, we don't want any harm
to come to anyone. Something that will be top of
their mind as they go up there as tensions remain high.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Where are you where are you basing yourself this white
to day as the boss man of the New Stalks
be political team.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
Well, it's the boss man of New Zealand's politically of
New Stalks Be's political team. I've children to delegate, and
I chose somebody that's going to be much better for
the job. Sophie Trigger, who's going up to a White
Honey for it. And she's there this week, so keep
an ear out for all her developments. And she's got
her ear to the ground and is actually there, so
she'll have all the developments. And she is an excellent,
excellent reporter of a lot better than me, So she's
(04:58):
going to be on the ground keeping you updated.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Great now there's been a lot of allegations about the
misuse of the sense of data. Now we're waiting on
a new report. What's this new report going to tell us, Jayce,
I'm sure you'll have a better scoop on this one.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Well, I mean, we all want to know what this
report is. Just to catch you up here, this is
an investigation sparked by alleged allegations that sent the starter
and COVID nineteen vaccination information collected at the Manurewamai in
Auckland have been misused for Tea Party Mary's election campaign.
So the Marii was also a voting site. Ta Kutais
pash Camp She is Tipati Mahdi's candidate in the Madi
(05:35):
seat of Tamakimikoto went on to win the seat and
she was She was the Marii's chief executive at the
time she wanted by just forty two votes. Now tip
Party Marii has strongly rejected any allegations that any sort
of COVID nineteen information or vaccination information was used in
(05:56):
a way to help ki Paki Mahdi win the seat,
and John Tamahidi, the party's president, have called for hard
evidence to substantiate these claims. Now that hard evidence came
in the form of this probe done by the Public
Service Commission. So last week we were told that the
findings would be released today and the inquiry involves six
agencies third party service providers, and the findings also had
(06:19):
impact on the public service, and it went on to
say some matters required referral to other authorities for further consideration.
Now we've got a statement on Friday night it said
that the Public Service Commission said that the findings for
the acquiry would no longer be released today as the
Commission's response required more time following feedback from some of
the agencies and Sir Brian Roach, whose leads the Public
(06:41):
Service Commission, So it was unfortunate, but the Commission needed
to get the response right. Quote, the inquiry has been complex,
involving six agencies, third party service providers and finding that
will impact all of the public service. Some matters will
also require referral to other authorities for further consideration, he said.
So we don't have a timeframe as to when the
(07:02):
investigation is going to be released, but it's not today
and we don't don't know why.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Jace We've been talking about this before on the show.
Since Trump got elected. What do you make of the
latest trade war comments. I mean it's you know, getting
pretty quick. He's putting him in pretty damn quickly, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
I mean, well it shows it goes to show that
Trump wasn't messing around and these weren't empty threats. In
terms of the tariffs. I mean, he said that he'd
be putting a twenty five percent tariff on Canada and Mexico,
and he's gone and done that, and that has implications
for New Zealand in a number of ways. I mean
that means that, you know, potentially New Zealand might look
like a better market to be selling into because there's
no tariffs coming in to hear from those those markets.
(07:44):
But it also kind of puts a bit of a
question mark over what Trump has said in terms of
other tariffs. He said that there would be, depending on
what news reports read, anywhere between a ten and a
twenty percent tariff on other goods from other countries. Now
New Zealand fits into that other country's category. That's the
Prime Minister about this several times, and he says these
(08:04):
are just hypotheticals. These are just hyper articles. We haven't
heard anything yet, but you know, behind the scene, obviously,
Winston Peters is working hard to make sure New Zealand
is exempt from any tariffs that come into play. But
you'd have to look at this like Trump's moved on Canada,
He's moved on Mexico. I don't know where New Zealand
fits into this, but you have to be a pretty
slick talker to see if we can be exempted when
(08:26):
those other big economies aren't.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Well. He's making a big deal about the drugs coming
in for those countries, and I don't think there's going
to be a lot of drugs cocaine and the heroin
and stuff coming in from New Zealand to America. So
I don't think we've got much to worry about there.
But jasp is before you go. I've just got a
lovely text for it, Hi, Nick. Jason Wills did a
fabulous job on talkback. I miss his opinions from guess
who Jamie Who? Jamie? Did you have Jamie call you
(08:50):
a few times? I beat you dead?
Speaker 3 (08:52):
I might have had Jamie call me. There's a few
people on talkback that are longtime listeners, longtime callers as well,
and I love them all. But it's very nice feedback.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Thank you. Jamie. There you go, have a great week
and keep us up to date with what's happening big
in politics. White angy week, ind doesn't it. I mean,
I think it's a big week. Normally. I love watching
all the food getting prepared at White Oh my gosh,
it looked so good. All the hung he is getting
put down. It's a great celebration New Zealand day, isn't it.
(09:21):
I hope so. Jason Wills, thank you very much.
