Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talk.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Said b.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
Friday, Sport, Adam Cooper, Jason Piden joined me in the studio.
Speaker 4 (00:17):
Welcome guys, Thanks, good morning, Good morning Nick.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Are you been jet nagged after our big trip yesterday?
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Pine?
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (00:23):
It was great, wasn't it? The two of us on
a road a bit of a roadie or that was
more of a flighty up to Auckland and back.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (00:30):
I gained a new appreciation for you during our travels
yesterday and neck, not that I didn't have great appreciation already.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
I publicly thank you because I'm a bad flyer, as
everyone knows that listens to the show. Jason held well,
he didn't literally hold my hand, but he was an
amazing host.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
He took me like.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
As we walked at the head off, as I said,
it feels like you're taking your old uncle and to
show the where you work like.
Speaker 5 (00:53):
A community outreach day, wasn't it?
Speaker 3 (00:55):
It was Ways Talk Sport talking about community out What
is it?
Speaker 2 (00:59):
How did you pronounce it? Community outreach?
Speaker 4 (01:01):
Miss daisy?
Speaker 2 (01:01):
They call it a miss Daisy trip.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Dave Reddy, the oldest, pointed, all black coach of all time,
first of Polynesia. Cook Island did not a Maori. I
always thought he was a MARII did you guys?
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Did you know?
Speaker 5 (01:13):
I knew? I think I knew we had had Pacifica yeah, background.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Yeah, did you know?
Speaker 4 (01:19):
Yeah? Like party, I knew it was Pacifica. But yeah, great.
I mean the noise just started to get more and
more in his favor, didn't it over these last few weeks,
you know, Jamie Joseph. I think if there was a
rash decision made to the day that Scott Robertson lost
his job, I think everyone would have thought, well, it's
Jamie Joseph, isn't it. But he's in on rugby. They've
moved quite quickly, but I think still very much done
their due diligence on this. With Steve Lancaster, the acting CEO,
(01:43):
and of course the legendary Hurricane Dane Cole's on behalf
of the Players Association involved with this, visiting both environments
of the coaches currently obviously Kobe and Japan for Dave Renny,
the Highland is for Jamie Joseph and Dunedin and here
we are. It just seemed to be that that's where
they were heading, and by quite some distance. He seems
to have sold himself. Hearing David Kirk and I listened
(02:04):
back to his interviews several times yesterday, he just seemed
to have sold his vision for the All Blacks and
his vision to take on the world a lot better
than Jamie Joseph.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Now, that was Dave Rennie's idea to the selection committee.
He's come out and said that. He said that as
part of his interviewing he wanted people to come into
his environment and see him work. So they must have thought, well,
we're doing it there, we have to do it for
Jamie as well. That to me was a very very
smart move because who's his captain and his club team?
Speaker 5 (02:34):
Yeah, Artie Save is over there. The other part of this, though, Nick,
is that like any job interview, it's the people who
you ring who aren't on the CV. If you're looking
to employ somebody, their referees on their CV are going
to talk in glowing terms about them, aren't they? Otherwise
they wouldn't be on your CV. Look, when I apply
for my next job, I'll probably put the both the
(02:56):
two of you on my CV, and I'll expect when
that prospective employer rings that you'll speak nicely about me.
What you have to do for true due diligence is
reach out to people who aren't on that CV and say, hey,
you've worked with Dave Rennie in the past, what's he like,
You've worked with Jamie Joseph, what's he like? How would
he go in this situation. I'm absolutely positive that that's
what they did as well, that they I mean, these
(03:18):
guys are all very well connected Dane Cole's Dane Cole
meted Dane Cole's phone, you know, the people he could
ring who have worked with and against and under Dave
Rennie and Jamie Joseph. He would have got a feel
from the Hey, what what's he really like? What's what's
he like in this situation? I think having him on
the panels of Masterstrope. By the way, so they've obviously
done a lot of background checking. They've I don't think
(03:39):
you can you can accuse them at all of not
running a robust process.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
How did you know?
Speaker 3 (03:43):
I mean, what's really confused me about this whole thing
when it got announced because someone told me the opposite
on the weekend. I've got it from inside information that
it's going to be Jamie Joseph, And I said, look,
I've heard nothing except Jason Pye, who would not come
on this my show or anyone else's show. And say,
three weeks was it two or three weeks ago? Two
or three weeks? You said, hold on, hold on? You
(04:04):
said you didn't. You didn't I could be you said,
did he know?
Speaker 2 (04:09):
I am going to correct.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
I'm going to correct you because what I said was
I think he is he is the front runner. No,
I don't think I did. And the reason is that
you hear all this stuff, right, I like you. I
heard the other day Jamie Joseph's got it. He's saying
goodbye to the Highland as he's packing up his desk.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
And they were saying Tony Brown's been brought out of
his contract.
Speaker 5 (04:26):
You know, it's just it's just all rubbish. It's just
all absolute rubbish.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
You know. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (04:31):
I heard a guy who told me this and his
his mum works with such and such and she's one
typing up the press release. It's just all crap.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Well, I'll tell you what I tell you. What isn't
crap What you said on the show.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
And I've got that on record, So I'm going to
find that the next Friday our plan and I beat
you anything you like as much as I love you
as a brother, that you said he's got the job.
Speaker 5 (04:48):
Okay, well I don't think I did, but I'm glad,
But I'm glad he has. I think it's the right appointment.
I like Dave Anny a lot. I've only I don't
know him personally at all. I don't know Jamie Joseph
at all. But but you like, like you know, keeps
have said it just he just seemed to have convinced
them that he's the right guy. He seems through level
very measured. I think every player who you talk to
(05:10):
and I've seen quoted, talks about how much they enjoy
working with Dave Rennie. So look, I think, you know,
I think we can go into this year and next
with a bit of optimism.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Okay, well, let's let's wish them all the best and
give them are the support we can because we want
to get to that World Cup at least, very very least.
The final Hurricanes look pretty disappointing last week.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Guys. Come on, I mean, you know, now we're won.
Speaker 5 (05:31):
I couldn't tell it was so yeah, I couldn't tell
where it was, so.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
No one could catch the ball that game. It wasn't
just a Hurricanes problem. You can't read much into that,
you really are personally. I don't think you can read
much into treacherous conditions humidity in Fiji. It's not a
sign of things to come at it, believe. And I
think they're going to bounce back really well against the
Warrior task tonight in Sydney to seek back game changer.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Okay, Piney, what do you think?
Speaker 5 (05:56):
Yeah, I think they'll win tonight.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Yeah, I think they win tonight too. I think we're
all agreed. Now.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
I had the privilege just sitting next to Jason Pine
when we watched this twenty twenty unfold in front of
our eyes because up very early in the morning, and
all I could hear was, let's tell I watched credit.
Yeah he was, he was, So you were pretty damn excited.
Speaker 5 (06:18):
Yeah, well, I love watching for now and bad It
wasn't it great? Got he got his second fifty yesterday
in fourteen balls.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
We watched the whole thing.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
He went from fifty to one hundred and fourteen deliveries.
That's mental, that's crazy. Yeah, I'm so looking forward to
the final. We can watch it together every long as well.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
I'm giving up.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
I am definitely not getting up to be You'll place
at two thirty of the morning on Sunday morning.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
Keep Monday morning.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
By the way, on Sunday after Sunday night.
Speaker 5 (06:45):
Say to me, Oh, there's a strange man at the door.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
He's twenty four hours.
Speaker 5 (06:48):
He's twenty four hours early.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Your uncle's come back to visit again. Coops up, Can
we win?
Speaker 4 (06:55):
I mean we can. It's going to be incredibly tough.
I mean India at home, we know that the beasts,
they have just the runs you have to score in
such quick succession at this tournament. I mean you look
at that England India game this morning where India got
through no bowler conceded less than nine runs and over.
So it's just you have to be on. You need
a finale and innings light the other day and more
to be competitive against India in this final. But they're
(07:16):
very capable.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Now, party, I know that you're very ex because I
sat next to you for long enough yesterday. You're very
excited about the Warriors season this year. Their first game
tonight yet.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
Rooster tonight at Ego Media Stadium. Look, I think they
just need to hang in until Luke Metcalfe is back.
You know, he's such a big part of their of
their season was last year they kind of tailed off
when he departed. If they can hang in for the
first six or seven games until he's back, then I
think they'll be okay for a run at the finals.
They're always good, you know, at home and early on
(07:46):
in a season at home, so I'm looking forward to
seeing what happens tonight.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
I know you are Phoenix versus Adelaide. I've only got
forty five seconds go.
Speaker 4 (07:54):
Hopefully not too many goals are conceded.
Speaker 5 (07:58):
Same time as the Hurricanes game two screens Hurricanes Warritors
Phoenix Adelaide on.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
I was about to let your secret out that you're
going to watch both because you impressed me when you
see it, he's going to watch.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
You know that he's going to watch two games at once.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
Coops, what's possible? Yeah, it's very common these days with script.
Speaker 5 (08:14):
You need to give it a go. Uncle.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
Can you set it up for me?
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Could you come round of my place and set it up.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
I appreciate you you're both.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
