Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talk sed B.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Friday Sport with Adam Cooper and Jason Pine. Good morning
to you both. Good morning, good morning. Oh that was
a bit quiet, good morning with it.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
You're right, Piney, I'm sorry. I'll tell your story. I've
just been on another zoom call and I finished, and
my wife X came out and goes, do you realize
how loud you are? Do you? When you do you
do that in the office, because if you do, I
will be laying a formal complaint against you. So yeah,
(00:46):
maybe I'm just trying to be a little bit more,
just a bit quieter.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Can I tell a story? Can I tell us a
story to our listeners that I use the same headphones
in the same desk as you and Coops, and when
I come in and to use it on Monday morning,
after you've been here Sunday, I have to take I
have to take the wax out of my ears because
you have it on so damn loud. I wonder, I
wonder you shout Adam Cooper. Let's start with New Zealand
(01:11):
Rugby CEO. New New Zealand Rugby CEO Steve Lancaster. I
came out yesterday on the show and I've written a
little bit of a blurb about it that I'll put
on Facebook. I think it was not an inspiring decision.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
Yeah, and I think that's probably fair, especially you know,
it was about mid last year, almost a year ago,
when Mark Robinson departed or announced he was departing, and
then left at the end of last year. They were
quite open and saying we want to scale the globe
for this and we want to find the best person
possible to leave New Zealand rugby and get it out
of the rut that I think a lot of people
feel like it's in at the moment. So I think
(01:43):
a lot of people had some hopes that maybe some
you know, fresh shiny someone with a lot of overseas
experience and the business of sport and entertainment might be
lured down to New Zealand. You know, people's names like
Sean Marks are being thrown around in some of the
early stages, and a lot of other you know, quite
distinguished people in the world of sports throwing around, and
(02:03):
it did get a bit strange. I think as we
got sort of to to March April this year as
we saw some of the other executive level and high
performance level roles be filled in New Zealand Rugby, but
no sign of a CEO. Then, straight on the back
of the AGM yesterday, Steve Lancaster, who has been filling
the role and seemingly has done a relatively good He's
a safe set of hands. He has been at the
organization for at least ten years. Yeah, it's just a
(02:27):
bit of a oh okay kind of reaction rather than
a wow reaction. And I went to speak to him
yesterday and David Kirk after their AGM, and I mean,
Steve Lancaster, he doesn't look any different to a lot
of those guys that are there from the provincial unions,
you know, former rugby players, former rugby player scrubs up
in a blazer for the AGM. But you know, he
appears to have the respect of David Kirk, he appears
(02:49):
to have the respect of a lot of the you know,
stakeholders of New Zealand Rugby. He's led a pretty you know,
bold move this year alongside David Kirk and implementing that
all Blacks coaching change. So I think we've got to
give him a chance, but certainly not. I think what
a lot of people may have been expecting.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
Jason pie I said in my little article that I
wrote that I was looking for in UFC, NBAF one,
you know, all those teams, all those organizations that are
world global entertainment industries. That's what I was looking for.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
They don't have the money for that. They simply do
not have the budget to attract that sort of candidate.
That's clear. That's become clear. The budget that they have
for the CEO, and I don't know what it is,
but let's say it's six or seven hundred grand. Let's
just say let's just say that to an arbitrary number.
I don't know if that's the number or not, but
let's just say that it is the caliber of Canada
that you're talking about. Then that is not available for
(03:42):
that money, not available for twice that money, three times
that money. There are sporting executives around the world earning
multimillion dollar salaries because of the jobs that they are in.
Why on earth would they leave that to come to
New Zealand for a third and sometimes a quarter of
the salary and then be in chargement organization where whatever
(04:02):
happens in the game that's wrong, it's your fault. If
there are no flags for June your Rugby, it's your fault.
If no one's turning up for MBC, it's your fault.
If Super Rugby is not getting the crowds, it's your fault.
If your blacks are losing, it's your fault. Why would
you Why would you take that job?
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Because that's that's in your blood. I mean I would
have gone for that guy that got fired from Red Bull.
What was his name? You know, the guy that's married
to one of the Spice girls, was the guy on
Formula one, the Red Bull. I would have gone for
someone like that.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
He doesn't all it doesn't have all blacks. He doesn't
have all blacks rugby in his blood neck, you know,
none of these. It has to be a key we right.
But if you want well, then they don't have what
you're asking for.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
I'm asking for entertainment. I'm asking for showbers. I'm asking
for I want them to be the global product that
they can be and not lose seven million a year.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Okay, but that's okay. So you're talking about the all
blacks there, what about the wider game? Are part of
the rugby ecosystem. How does your man from the UFC
help junior rugby flourish. How does he go to the
Panicky Rugby Club or the North Rugby Club and stand
there and talk to the members about how important rugby
is to their community. He can't. It's not possible. That
guy is not well, it's a unicorn job in it, you.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
Know, play you're on the show. You just you know,
you're always got the right artswer for it. You're one
hundred percent right on that. I was just looking for
something a little bit more showbiz than Steve Lankers. I'm wrong,
you're right, You're right, right, miss, Move on to something
that we might agree on. It's a big event in
party to the Phoenix Woman hosts Brisbane. They're behind. They
(05:29):
ate all a tiny bit piney.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Yeah, only two one though, and they're at home on Sunday,
which is always an advantage. And look at some I
think it's setting itself up for an awesome game of football,
you know, if they come back sort of, you know,
three to one, four one down. Just so people understand,
it's the aggregate across the two legs, so effectively, it's
half time and the Phoenix are two to one down,
so if they score a goal, bring it back to
(05:54):
two all and then we're all on. Could need extra time,
could need penalties. If they want to buy a two
goal margin, they go straight through to the Grand Final.
So look, I'm hearing will be six thousand plus there
on Sunday. They've got extra septs and and opening it
up to I mean, I think it'll be an absolute
caudron there, a great occasion first time, you know, the
Phoenix have a chance men or women to go to
(06:15):
a Grand Final. The men that are a couple of
years ago couldn't quite take the final step. Honestly, I
think this will be a really great occasion, and I'm
very confident that they'll get the job done and be
playing the following week in the Grand Final.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Coops. Wouldn't it be amazing if it was like to
all and then went to the penalty shootouts and we
have the same thing we had last week? I mean,
I don't think I can remember that almost is the
All Whites game at Westpac Stadium, you know last week?
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Yeah, it was great theater. I mean, it always offers
great theater, doesn't it. And it really hits everyone's nerves,
doesn't it when there's shootouts, But it is sporting theater
at its absolute best. I'm sure the Phoenix that any
opportunity will take a winning regulation or a winn an
extra time over having to go to penalty shootouts and
what that does. And you know, just hearing the team
and managed to go out to one of their fan
days at and Laps and Key just a couple of
(07:01):
days ago. There's a real positive buzz about this team.
And I think we underestimate the ability of Bev Priestman
and her in credentials to kind of analyze the situation
and then put that into words as a way to
getting the team on board for this weekend. And the
way she's been able to kind of almost say, let's
create a narrative around this week let's talk about how
inspiring it would be to come from a goal down
(07:22):
head home and take out this game. And I think
that the message that she's been able to deliver to
the players has meant they've landed back here on Monday
straight after a very disappointing performance in Brisbane on Sunday,
without letting any frustrations from that game linger. Without you know,
absorbing maybe some scrutiny around how they performed in that game,
and actually saying, actually it's not that bad. We're heading home,
(07:44):
we're only one goal behind. We actually beat Brisbane three
nil a month or so ago. Bring it on and
one occasion it's going to be.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
You know what, I can remember absolutely like it was
yesterday when Bev Priestman was first announced. We on the show,
You two guys and me, we said, how exciting a
time is this for football? Not female football in Wellington.
She's produced in every way pioneer. She's I mean we've
(08:13):
been we've been blessed in the team. I think the team.
I love the team. I can't. I mean everyone that
gets interviewed look looks good, god energy, says the right thing.
They're an amazing team.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Yeah, and they've all been improved under her neck. And
I think that's the You know, you've seen coaches, you know,
all your years involved in top level sport, and some
of them are great. Some of them talk a really
good talk, but others actually walk that walk. And Bev
Priestman has improved every player in that team through her coaching.
She's clearly an amazing manager of people's personalities of dressing
(08:48):
room culture, but also a brilliant a brilliant football coach,
and you have to give a huge, huge kudos and
a massive amount of credit for what they have done.
You know they have they have walked the walk. Here
we are a game away from the Grand Final. Yeah,
credible higher. We all know the circumstances behind.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
It, but it's still on incredible high.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
It's been brilliant. Yeah, it's been brilliant.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
Okay, come on, no cam Roy Guard, no Reuben Love,
mina Pacific. It should just still be an easysh game.
But they met us earlier in the season, didn't they
last year?
Speaker 4 (09:23):
I think they've beat us for a couple of years actually,
But I can't see the Hurricanes losing this one big
win over them at the start of the season at
the Stadium. This year they return game up there. Mawana
are just it's a sad state of affairs for them
at the moment. They're in disarray off the field. Many
would say they're in a bit of disarray on the
field too, probably largely as a result of that. So
even without cam Royguard and Rubin Love geez, the Hurricanes's
(09:44):
depth is good. You know, you look at the players
that have been able to come in, Yes, not as experienced,
but across the park there are leaders on that field
that cater for some that say these inexperienced guys who
are coming in at nineteen twelve this week, So not
worry at all in the context of cam Royguard being
out for the next few weeks, which means they'll probably
will definitely be without them. For the Blues and the Highlanders,
it makes five points from this game all the more important,
(10:06):
I think to get the four points on offer against
Mawana Pacifica to get that top or second place income
the playoffs. So yeah, I think it's still a lot
of importance on this It's not just a run in
the park to sort of, you know, tune up for
the later rounds of the competition before the playoffs. It's
an important win at the top of the table as
the Blues without a game in hands, who have still
(10:28):
got a buy to have only trail us by two.
So yeah, big, big weekend.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
I think Piety the Adrian cash Boy's boy that's playing
first five eight. That's how I know him. He's a
pretty amazing athlete. I hear from from all accounts.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Yeah, Lucas Kesh, well, yeah, I haven't haven't seen a
lot of him because he hasn't really had the opportunities,
but yeah, this is a great opportunity for him to
show us what he can do. Reuben Love has been
been terrific in that ten Jersey Brick cameraon We Knows
Out with injury. Yeah, I look, I feel as though,
as like Coop said, that the Hurricane should win this
game and win it pretty well, regardless of the fact
(11:02):
that they've given a few players a rest and also
missing up or wary Guard in particular through injury. Yeah, Mowana,
I think are kinda they're stumbling along, aren't they. You know,
we've all been following the news about whether there's a
consortium that's going to come and save them, and whether
that consortium has even been given the opportunity to do that.
You hear varying reports about this, But I think at
(11:24):
the end of the day, the Hurricanes, the way they're playing,
they're a deep squad. They believe in the depth of
their squad. As Clark lave Law said yesterday, I think
they should get the job done.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
Tother comfortably big weekend or a big Sunday in both
of your guys. Neck of the Woods. You've not only
got the Phoenix playing in Popa Arena has the Pulse playing.
I think they play Saturday.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
Night tomorrow, Yeah, and then the Mystics.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
And then Sunday the States play.
Speaker 4 (11:47):
I know you don't have to leave Pottyder to have
a great sporting weekend.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Oh you love that one, finey, wouldn't you.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Well, that's that's the mantra I've lived my life by. Really,
you don't have to You don't have to leave the
Ta or Pottydoer area to make something of yourself. I'm
looking forward to it. It's the lead to bodybuild this weekend. Football, basketball, netball.
Very looking forward to a big weekend out here.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
All games will be well supported too. They love the
sport out there.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
And when I grew up in that area, we caught
it peatown. You know, that was a little bit more
funky than it those days. Thank you both very much,
Adam Cooper and Jason Pine.
