music time on Wellington Mornings.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Well it's time to talk music with our music guru
from his studio to our studio. James Irwin joins and
now I know that you want to talk about based
on Electric Avenue last week ends, how successful that was.
Now they've announced the two more gigs, one of the
Here and Wonrington. Yes, Fldians are coming.
Speaker 4 (00:42):
To Wildians are coming to Onnings and let's have listen
quick off history is repeating. They're coming back to Wellington,
to the Capitol.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
You know what, I don't think people realize how big
a gig this is because they're playing at a stadium
that only holds I think three eight fourthou TSP Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 4 (00:59):
I think it's trying to work it out on the weekend.
I thought about four thousand at nikays O.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
The week Yeah yeah, I mean how does that work financially?
Speaker 2 (01:08):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
But they're doing Victor Arena or Spark Stadium yea, because
that filled thousand, Yeah, it's nine thousand.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Even more. Probably I would have thought.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
I think it's nine memory.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
Okay, and then they're playing the Big the Big Barn
in christ Church. I can't think what.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
It's called, but yeah, that's nine thousand.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Yeah, that's about the same.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
So like Wellington is very very.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Okay because well that's that whole thing of you know,
which we haven't kind of talked about, is gigs that
don't come to the Capitol anymore, like food fighters. I
saw them a couple of years back, filled out TSB,
not t SP, filled out the stadium what is it
Henry Stadium now filled it out forty odd thousand and
thirty five thousand people.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
They do any of the DG stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
There was a DG you know how they did covers,
all the covers.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
You know, they didn't do any that's right. I forgot
about that.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
You know that we play one of their songs on
on here.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
Yeah, yeah they didn't. I don't think they didn't yt
the live gig, but that was a Keller gig and
it was one of those perfect Wellington sunny days and
it was great. Why aren't they coming back to Whlington
because last time they at Aukland Wellington christ Church.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
This time my new stadium new stadium.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
New stadium. I knows a punisher that we're not getting
the gigs here. Okay, okay, so we're completely deviated. Yes,
split ends, may get yourselves in there that I think
that concert will sell out. It'll be what do you
mean you think it will sell It will sell out
as pretty much straight away. It's one of those ones
where you've got to get in the queue and go
(02:31):
click click click. You higher Grace the producer, because she'd
been expert sitting on those sort of digital cues. I
much liked it in the old days.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
She missed out for two gigs.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
You know, she missed out on Marlon Williams.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Know that what was his name?
Speaker 4 (02:44):
Someone would never heard. Well, actually I did get Maulin
Williams tickets. I missed out on the first lot of Hairstyles,
but got going now gun Hairstyles that's in Sydney or
something wasn't Melourne. I'm going to the Melbourne one. Have
you given her time off?
Speaker 2 (02:57):
It signed nothing to do with me. I don't control anyone.
I have trouble controlling my mic.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
Is that what you haven't given? Put me in for
my leave off. I've been waiting for my approval. Look,
so I get worried about concerts and aren't coming, But
of course brew Town are delivering it plus one touring
and delivering it with hot sounds. Tony Hadley from Spandal Ballet.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Do you know I had a great conversation with We're
going to play some of it.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
I loved, I love, what a great you, what a
great man. Cat's Away this Sunday is this Sunday you know,
and anyone who loves pulp fiction, the songs in the
pulp fictures of the Pulp Fiction soundtrack and the robbery.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Do you know who's in the Cats Away now? Sharon
and Neil coming back?
Speaker 5 (03:44):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (03:44):
I don't know. This is Lloyd Cole and from Lloyd
Cole in the Commotions from that whole New Romantic area
in the eighties. He's playing as well, who else have
we got? Who else have we got? We've got my sex?
They're playing there and this is Tony Hadley again. Huge
song gold there was probably about eighty six was in.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
A movie too so long that almost talking about very
good movie.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Yet.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
So if you want to go to the Capitol's friendliest
concert and probably one of the best concerts in the
in the whole Wellington region at the moment, Hearts Sounds.
They've been delivering the goods for the last three or
four years. It's a great promoter, Kurt, who every just
delivers the goods. It's it's a great concert. I've been
to a couple of saw Did you get.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Any backstage passes?
Speaker 4 (04:29):
I've got no passes and I haven't even haven't even
gone to sorry listeners, I haven't even got any freebies
to give away because I know that Kurt's hardly got
any tickets left. So if you are thinking about going,
get on the plus one ticket site and buy some
tickets because it's you know, we haven't got a lot
of concerts that come to the city, but when they do.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
We've got to go long just to see Tony Hadley.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Yeah, Tony Hadley. Well you talk to them and I
know we've got a clip that Grace is pulled up.
Let's have a listen to Tony Hadley.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
An hour before the show, when you're having your shower
and you're getting ready and you're going through your vocal training.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Do you still get the buzz if.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
You go to pretty much any band backstage before that
final how before you go on stage, everybody sitting around,
there's a sort of there's a kind of melonists. Everybody
kind of just is chilling out and everything. And then
the tour manager says.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Right, guys, come on, we've got one hour to go.
And then I was right, here we go.
Speaker 5 (05:17):
And then you're in the shower doing the vocal exercises,
you know, polishing your shoes or whatever. And then before
we go on, we have a thing called a ninety nine,
so she's basically a shot of vodka. And who smash
the glasses together? Someone says a little anecdote from the day,
a little funny quick bang the glasses together, put something
on that, put the glass on her head, and then
(05:39):
shake hands and last minute trip to the toilet for
a nervous week and we're on stage.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Happened.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
That's great. What a great chat you had with them.
So yeah, hot sounds this weekend, this Sunday. It's really
family friendly. So it's no, it's an rateen gig, so
it's not family for family friendly. Great two o'clock till
nine o'clock. You can catch the train there and back,
you know, go and support the contents that are coming
to this town. Reporting back from I went to that
Fat Friddy's gig, the Secret that was not so secret, incredible, incredible,
(06:09):
and so let's give them big ups in May first, second,
and third. They've got a show at the Michael Fowler
three nights in a row. There's only tickets left for
May third. From what I saw at that gig at
Mao Nui, they were just lifting the roof. There we go.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
I'm an old friend of Ian Gordon's. I must get
him on.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
He was awesome. You got to get him on. And
we had we had Mark Williams, who's rhythm slave, who's
part of the band. He was down here last Tuesday,
the last couple of tuesdays recording with me. Well, he
was in the afternoon. You were probably you were having
an afternoon nap. I did not have enough gigs coming up.
Cuba Dooper's one to watch out for. Coming up at
(06:48):

show called Disco Witch. I'm gonna talk about it next time.

dressed in leather. It's gonna be fun, It's gonna be
moshing Valhalla, so it's it's gonna be dirty and sweaty
Avalanche City. I remember those guys. They had that song
(07:09):
Love Love Love was a huge hitting about twenty ten,
twenty eleven. They're this Saturday, mal Nui Newtown this festival.
If you're not going to Hut Sounds, go to Newtown
Festival this Sunday. That's always great. That's my homehood. I'll
be there all day. Wilson Street stages spectacular Fur Patrol
twelve for March at mew Bogan Day Out. Old mate
(07:30):
Philip Bruetown's pulling out the old Bogan Day Out again.
I don't know what goes on there. It's a wild
ride with barbecues, trucks, chili eating, live music. It'll be
chaos for great fun of films running. No, no, look
at us. You've got a sophisticated shirt on. I've got
my new jackecket. Your jacket looking yeah, we're looking smart,
both of us men. You and the Bats fourteenth to March.
(07:51):
New album of theirs is terrific. They're flying non legends.
Soweto Gospel Choir March thirty first I saw them in
New York years ago. Stunning and Tom Scott. Are they
playing at the one down the roads at the Saint
James on the site? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:04):

Homebrew or Avondale Bowling Club, he's got a new album
out this Friday and a Wellington gig just announced at
ten o'clock this morning. May that Meolnui that will sell
out as well. Grace is probably already in the kids.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
You know, he's apparently we're going to have a chat
to him.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
Great because he is. He is a great New Zealander
and it's got a lot of good things to say.
Speaker 2 (08:25):

talk to me?
Speaker 4 (08:27):

Speaker 4 (08:32):
That's us.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
That's us, fun done done, Happy days.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
I'd like to talk next time you're in. Can you
talk about the bands that cover bands that pretend to
be the real band touring? Because I've been hearing that
that's the next big thing in music.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
There's the band doing that about rim at the moment
who I've been listening to and that I was going
to talk about today band? Can we do the next
time that we want to reform because I want Arim
to reform. But there's a cover band tour in the
world and everyone's going it's just as good. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
There's a big thing about around the world that they're
all doing there.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
So can we talk.
Speaker 4 (09:08):
