Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio. Good Morning.
This is Laura. Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast. Today's
tip is to figure out a meal or two that
you can cook and your family can eat in half
an hour or less. When you know you can feed

(00:26):
your family inside thirty minutes, you are better positioned to
do something special in the evening without feeling too rushed.
Today's tip was inspired by The Family Dinner Project, a
group that motivates and equips people to have family dinner.
The Family Dinner Project published a recipe for what one

(00:46):
staff member calls her yoga night dinner. It's the meal
she feeds her family when she gets home thirty minutes
before she has to leave for yoga and needs to
cook and eat with her family in that time. Her
yoga night dinner is eggs cooked on a bed of
fresh vegetables and topped with parmesan cheese. Her dinner got

(01:08):
me thinking about my own choir night dinners. How do
we eat when we have time only for me to
get to choir practice? I had mondays. I tend to
cook pasta, which is pretty quick, especially if you do
something like angel hair pasta plus a jar of sauce
on Thursdays, because yes I am in two choirs, we
have pancakes and scrambled eggs. These are also very quick.

(01:32):
What about you? Do you have a go to choir
night or yoga night or poker night dinner? If you
don't consider figuring one out, It is helpful to have
a go to dinner for busy nights when you cook
and eat something quickly. This keeps you from eating takeout,
which is generally less healthful and often more expensive. Plus,

(01:54):
picking up takeout or waiting for door dash probably takes
just as long as quick meal you make at home.
Maybe your out the door dinner is canned black beans,
microwaveable rice, frozen corn, and ettamammy. Or you could do
a sheep pan dinner of Italian sausage, red peppers and
onion wedges. My best of both World's co host Sarah

(02:17):
hart Unger recommends frozen turkey burgers and baby carrots. Whatever
your main steam, in the bag veggies or a bagged
salad make for fast, good for you sides. Longtime listeners
know that I am always recommending busy people take one
night for you. Choose an activity to commit to one

(02:38):
night a week that does not work and is not
caring for family members. Ideally, it's something that gets you
out of the house and involves a commitment to other
people so it happens. It can be easy to lose
our sense of self in the busy years, but taking
one night for you means that there is something in

(02:59):
trend enjoyable in your life that makes you feel like
a person beyond your job or your family. When you
have a yoga or poker night dinner, you are ready
to get dinner on the table and get yourself out
the door in minimal time. There doesn't need to be
a trade off between feeding your family and getting time

(03:21):
for yourself to do something special. Both are possible in
the same night, and when you know everyone can eat
and be happy, you might be a little more likely
to find something like yoga or poker or a choir
that you can do. You have removed one obstacle to

(03:42):
something fun. What are your favorite yoga or poker night dinners.
