Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio. Good Morning.
This is Laura. Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast. Today's
tip is to find a food that says vacation to
you and then make sure to savor and enjoy it

as a way to deepen your vacation experience. Longtime listeners
know that every summer, my family goes to the same
beach for a week or two, and pretty much every
day while we are at the beach, we go to
the same ice cream parlor at night. When we first

started going ice space trips out. But about three years
ago I decided, what the heck? People want ice cream
every night and we are on vacation. And now this
delicious ice cream helps say vacation to me. Well the
non dairy flavors they have for me and regular for

everyone else. It deepens my sense of pleasure and distance
from the routines of ordinary life. Maybe you have a
similar food. It might be lobster rolls when you're in Maine,
or raw oysters at a particular beachfront restaurant in Florida.

Or maybe your vacation food is something you could have
any time and anywhere, but don't except on vacation. Cookbook
author Jenny Rosenstrauch writes about her family's tradition of getting
pop tarts anytime they grocery shop while on vacation and
no other time. It is just not a food the

family buys regularly at the grocery store. Subsequently, she writes
that buying pop tarts on vacation reminds us that the
point of vacation is inserting happiness wherever you can and
getting as far away from your daily routine as possible.

I love the idea of finding places to insert happiness
on vacation, and food is a great one. Whether it
is place specific foods like my ice cream or a
lobster roll in Maine, or just foods like pop tarts
that you might choose not to eat at other times.

I bet you already indulge in vacation foods. Doing so
mindfully can amplify the happiness any time you are going
to the beach or pretzel rods your go to snack.
You may think that is just a practical choice, since
they stand up to humidity and even a little splashed
water better than chips. But if that is what you

always bring, then over time pretzel rods may start to
say beach to you, so notice that. Reflect on it
at the grocery store. I am buying pretzel rods because
we are vacationing at the beach. Narrate it to yourself
as you are packing your beach bag. We are at

the beach, so I've got to have my pretzel rods.
Reflect on it as you are sitting under an umbrella
and snacking. Hm, I am loving my beach snack. The
same goes for place specific vacation foods. Here I am
on vacation in Florida enjoying oysters. You can document that

first lobster roll in Maine and text it to friends
to let them know that vacation has begun. When you
pay attention to your vacation foods, you insert more happiness
and have one more reminder that you are on vacation.

You use more of your senses to celebrate, and that
can deepen the experience and make it even more memorable.
In the meantime, this is Laura. Thanks for listening, and
