Speaker 1 (00:01):
I'm the last person to board the plane almost miss it,
and I've had a great summer and now I'm anxious
to get home and back to my senior year in college.
And after a couple of hours of flying, we stopped
in Frankfurt for refueling, and as we flew over Brussels
twenty minutes later, the pilot said, eight hours to New York.

(00:26):
Just then, a man and woman came running down the
aisle and somebody screamed, he has a gun, she has
a grenade.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
That's Mimmy Nickter on the harrowing moment that changed her life.

And they kicked the door of the cockpit, and the
pilot opened the door and they rushed themselves in there,
and they made an announcement, we shouldn't be afraid. And
just then we felt the plane turn in the air,
so much so that the bags that were under people's
seats just kind of flew into the aisle.

I was literally on the bathroom floor or in bed,
unable to move, with two girls twelve and fifteen, one
who actually was aware of what was happening, and one
who is unaware and deciding on the advice of there
was not to tell them. So doing this dance with
my older daughter where she's pretending she doesn't know, and
me but pearing swollen face and disheveled and pretending like

everything was fine.

And Laurie Hertzel on her last memory of her brother.

It was shortly after he graduated from high school and
he came rushing down from his room and he had
something in his hand. I don't know if it was
a duffel bag or a paper sack or something, and
he kind of shoved me out of the way and
said move.
