Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is Annie and Samantha. I'm welcome to.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Stuff I Never Told You production of iHeartRadio, and welcome
to another edition of Happy Hour. As always, if you
choose to drink or whatever you choose to do, please
do so responsibly. But before we get into this Happy Hour,
(00:29):
Samantha and I have a very exciting announcement.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
So exciting.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Yes, we are going on a voyage.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yes, we are going on the Stuff at Sea Voyage
with Virgin Voyages. So what is the Stuff at Sea Voyage?
You ask, Well, this is something we're doing in sponsorship
with Virgin Voyages and other podcasts on the network, like
Stuff you should Know and Stuff they don't want you
to know. Where we're going to be recording a podcast
(01:02):
at sea. We're going to be doing interactive activities with
you listeners, because we would love to hang out with
you and to meet you and for you to see
how how this whole thing works. And it's it's going
to be really really fun. I'm excited about it. It
is a five night trip from October tewod to the seventh,
(01:25):
twenty twenty sixth, just in case you need the very
concrete day, and it's from New York City to Bermuda,
and We're going to have a lot more information in
the coming weeks months, but for now, you can go
to Virgin Voyages dot com slash stuff to learn more
about it and to book your trip.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
We would love to see.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
You, yes, and not to hop right into about me.
I know that the voyages have been exciting for so
many people because not only do they get to have
this amazing experience like seeing how we work behind the scenes,
seeing how stuff you should know works and all of that,
(02:07):
but also you can interact with us. And if one
thing I'm going to have to do is take a
couple of these fitness classes. I know in the past
they did have zoomba classes, which looks really really cool,
which is what I'm going to talk about today. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I'm going to give you all an update. It's been
a minute since. If you need to update, I think
the last that I had told you was that, yes,
(02:28):
I am teaching and I am experiencing new things.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Annie first and foremost.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
Since this is a happy hour, are you partaking in
any happy hour events right now?
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Yes? I am drinking a rose oh yes.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
Lovely, I am sparkling water a up, Yes, and I can.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
On our voyage we could be having some exciting times
where we could also talk be happy houring together with y'all.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
Yes, maybe we should have that set up for those
who are going to actually be there, have an actual
happy hour time.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Yes with y'all.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
That would be amazing, award winning drinks and restaurants. Hello,
let's do this anyway back to yes, So I am
in my zumba era. As y'all know, I've been in
my zumba air for like ten years. I've done this
for ten years. Made friends just recently did a whole
big event at one of our community events called Atlanta
(03:28):
Streets Alive, where they go around every month in different
parts of Atlanta shut down the streets and let people
become pedestrians, use their bikes and kind of tour their
own home because it's differ when you walk on the
streets and not actually drive, because you can pay attention
to see what it's around. I know I've done that
a lot of times where we're like, oh, I didn't
know that was here. Oh I didn't know this existed here.
(03:50):
So it's a lovely thing. So during that time, myself
and four other amazing instructors came together and did like
a three and a half hour long session. I'm pretty
sure my voice issue is partly due yes to that event.
But it was so windy it was, and the collin
was so heavy that like my eyes swelled and was
(04:12):
so red. Taking my contacts out felt like I was
stabbing myself with alcohol, like indirectly into my eyes. You
know when you put like hot pepper on your fingers
and you accidentally touch your eye. That's what it felt like.
It was intense. But with all of that, I have
been having the best time. My classes are slow growing.
(04:34):
So right now though I'm teaching zoomba at a club
La Fitness, they are not a sponsor. That's why. That's
just what happened to where my classes are and I'm
getting like ten to fifteen. But as newer people come in,
people are talking about how they.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Love my class, how they get so much fun.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
I'm different.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
My music and my dance are typic the original choreography
I have. Before I even started, I told y'all I
needed ten unique numbers. I have like ten, twelve, fourteen,
nice and they're slow growing, thank you. And I have
my die hard people who have always been friends, who've
(05:17):
been friends through other classes, that have been showing up
and supporting me. You supported me this weekend, unfortunately.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
In a very funny way.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
Unfortunately my set was not on Our schedule was so
ahead that we were thirty minutes early. So you friend
of show Katie as well as my partner did.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Not make it to your specific set to mind.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
So y'all came man, and you're like, you know what,
it's cold? I think I'm gonn think there's a bar
right here. Let me go into here.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Yes, So we went inside and there's the glass windows there,
so we had perfect view of trumantics working out while
we were being on our peers, and we got a
very funny selfie of the three of us together and you're.
Speaker 4 (06:06):
With my head the back of my head like jumping
because I've been I was doing a routine.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
It was quite funny.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
I was like, what is this yellow hysterical? I will
tell you.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
Just like in any other anxiety written experiences, I feel
quite under prepared, under educated in this level in expertise
that like teaching classes is still seemingly like I don't
know if people are coming out of sympathy, which is
(06:48):
not true, because I've had many of them telling me
how good I am, how much they love my stuff,
how much they love my music. They've asked for my playlists.
That's one of the biggest compliments to me, right honestly,
telling me I have the best playlist. I'm like yes,
uh telling me of have many of them telling me
that I've got all the bangers that you got. Your
your songs are banger after banger. I was like, yes,
(07:10):
I love you.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
So getting that kind of validation.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
It's interesting to see because obviously, if you know much
about Atlanta, at one point in time, it was kind
of called like the Wakanda of the South because we
have a very strong black community, strong hip hop community.
It's interesting to see how I travel from place to
place and how different the community is like the classes.
(07:35):
As as beautiful as Atlanta can be, there's a level
of segregation that is interesting and for me, as a
woman of color who was not black, going into these spaces,
it's really obvious about some of the ways the city
has been laid out, and it makes me really sad
(07:56):
at the same time, like, I'm excited that I can
go to the different communities and teach my style, and
I do I change it up to where I am.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
I will do.
Speaker 4 (08:04):
Say, like some of the classes, I make it more
complicated because I know they can get it. Some of
the other classes that not so complicated, I know they
can't get it.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
I have a lot of mourning.
Speaker 4 (08:12):
Classes which have a lot of older people in there,
so I try to make sure that I'm on a
level that they can enjoy themselves and not get frustrated,
but also keep it hyped up enough for those who
want to get it in can get it. In my
motto at the beginning of classes, always thank you for coming.
Make sure you're listening to your bodies, modify if you
need to know injuries here, but also push where you
(08:35):
can because you should be able to push yourself a
little bit. And I enjoy it even in the days
that I'm like this is weird, the vibe is weird,
because you can tell a vibe. It still feels nice
to be able to do these things. But I also
come away thinking they hate me sometimes they or they
didn't like this, or if people go missing for a
couple of classes, I think they don't like me anymore.
(08:57):
So I very much navigated getting my personal anxieties, performance anxieties,
and like just self esteem issues at the same time.
And then basking and those who are giving so much
to me, like those who are supporting me, who are
coming out, who coming out to different classes, who travel
(09:17):
to see me, like that is a joy. And I
will also say like the people who I've had seen
as mentors being there for me has been beautiful. Two
specific ones I've talked about Cardio jam and DeMarco before.
He was my introduction to these classes or ten years ago,
eleven years ago, I think, and he has been with
me when I teach a class and if I ask
(09:40):
him for help, he is there immediately, and I can't
talk about how amazing that is.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
That kind of support can be.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
I had a woman who I used to do classes
with she now teaches, and she reached out to me.
She's like, oh my god, I'm so proud of you.
I need to come to a class, we need to
teach together. And I love those moments. And then Fred,
who is my zoomba instructor that I love and a
door he was the one that actually gave me the
confidence to be like, you can teach, you actually can
(10:08):
do this.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
You should try it.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
And then Gigi, whom I love, she was the first
one to pull me to the front and let me
have a spotlight. I was like, what, maybe I can
do this. So this has been a really empowering moment,
which I don't say that often about myself, like I
don't I can't oftentimes label those moments. I don't talk
(10:31):
about people who I see is influential or influences, not
because there's not people who've influenced me. Obviously there have,
but oftentimes for me, there's so many conflicts in our
belief systems that I don't feel like it's you know,
I mean like it's been a pill battle in so
many ways. Love and support is always there, but mentoring
(10:52):
and being someone that you can truly look up to
is a whole different level. Also in understanding that we're
all human, putting anybody on a pet soul is dangerous
and I don't do that because people are fallible no
matter what. You are going to have different opinions. No
matter what, there's going to be a moment where you
feel disappointed in yourself or they may feel disappointed in you,
or you feel disappointed in them. And a part of
(11:14):
humanity is to be able to work it out. Sometimes
you can't, hopefully you can. But all those things to
say is that to have a moment of like this
is what encouraged this path has been interesting, especially late
in the game, especially when it comes to like.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
Seeing immediate critiques. You know what I mean?
Speaker 4 (11:39):
Does does that make sense? But yeah, so it's been interesting.
I'm still struggling. I'm still struggling with balancing. There's also
been a whole level of understanding how to say no. Yeah,
constant struggle because I've had to or I would be
teaching two classes a day for every day. There's no way.
(12:01):
There's no way. My body cannot handle that. My body
can barely handle this.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
Well, I have to say, you looked like you knew
what you were doing when I was at the event.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
He looks really good.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
From inside the from inside the building, you.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Looked wonderful with my beer in hand.
Speaker 4 (12:20):
Yeah, we were in like hoodies and coats because we
were so cold.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
It was we would have stayed outside. But I don't
know what we were thinking. But my friend Katie was
She was in shorts and a like short there's no way,
and I felt okay, but I could tell as time passed,
I was.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
Gonna be cold. So yeah, we did on sure inside.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
I don't believe I would too. I was like, oh no,
they're gonna be so miserable. It was fun. The events
were on Atlanta Streets Alive, so if you are local,
and I'm sure there's other events other places I have
events like this, but I do adore. I remember when
it first started, yeah, and how fun it really was
because it just felt like a community coming together, seeing
(13:04):
new businesses, seeing small businesses come together, and being able
to see things that are happening, getting news about Atlanta.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
It's fun.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
It is fun. I told you this the first time
I saw it. You know, I don't drive anywhere, so
I'm walking around or I used to bike. I hardly
do anymore, but that's what I do anyway, and so
sometimes I would run into these and I'd.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
Be like, why is everybody on the street? Like I think.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
It took me a couple of years before I realized
it was a vala and I would just be like,
what's happened here? Did they close the street down because
something's gone wrong?
Speaker 3 (13:42):
That's funny. I think I went to the first inaugural
one it.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Was cool, nice nice pree covid.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Oh wow, oh yeah, I just stumbled on one on
constantly on once and then one year Piedmont.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
That means nothing to people know, but those are streets
that are near me. They're like well known Atlanta streets.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yes.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Well, I'm happy for the update. I'm happy it's going well,
and I'm sure you'll continue to grow. I believe, I
believe that you are probably very popular teacher, so.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
I'll tell you when I get over twenty people.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
I think ten to fifteen's pretty good, honestly. But yes,
let me know, keep me updated, all right, listeners. In
the meantime, you know we love hearing from you, what
your hobbies are, what.
