Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is Anny and Samantha. I'm welcome to Stuff
Never Told You Production, buy Her Radio, and welcome to
another edition of Happy Hour. As always, if you're choosing
to drink, please do so responsiblely. Whatever you're choosing to do,

(00:26):
always be responsible. Yes, Samantha, are you up to anything?

Speaker 2 (00:31):
I am up with my bubble water. That's just gonna
be the stable for me.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
What about you? Red Wine Stafle uh So. Before we
get into this episode, quick reminder, Stuff Mom Never Told
You is going on a voyage with Virgin Voyages. Hey. Yes,
they are sponsoring us to go on a voyage from
October second to the seventh this year, twenty twenty six.

(01:01):
Just to make sure to clarify it is.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yeah, this is twenty twenty seven. You're too late.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Yes, sorry you missed it. It was blessed yes, and
it will be going from New York City to Bermuda.
We will be recording a live podcast on on the
trip and stuff you should know, a podcast you might
have heard of. Stuff they don't want you to know.

(01:30):
Also will be there. There will be fun events you
can hang out, meet us. See how it's done, I guess.
But yeah, Also it's adults only. We didn't say that
the last time I mentioned it, but it is adults
only twenty one and over, Yes, twenty one and over.

(01:51):
If you would like to learn more, we are going
to be talking about this more over the coming months,
but if you would like to learn more before then,
you can visit Virgin Voyages dot com slash stuff and
that's also where you can get your tickets. We would
love to see you, all right. So this feels kind

(02:13):
of strange to me, but because of the way the
calendar works, this is our Star Wars, our annual Star
Wars Day episode that I do. It's coming out before
it's even May. It feels wrong, but just the timing
of things, this is when it has to happen. So

(02:33):
this is where we are. But Star Wars Day, if
you somehow don't know, if you somehow missed it from
listening to this podcast, is May the fourth. There's also
Revenge of the Fifth or Revenge of the sixth, and
this is the May so there's a lot. There's a
lot of Star Wars stuff going on. But I have

(02:59):
people I've talked about this before because I have this
strong association with Star Wars. Everybody who's like Star Wars Day.
You know, we need to talk to Annie. I've already
got plans, and this weekend it just feels wrong. It
feels too early. I don't I might. I just wish

(03:26):
it could be it's on a Monday this year. It's
not working for me, Samantha. I'm sorry.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
I'll change it for you if I could.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
Thank you, thank you. Oh, it would be so much
better if it was not on a Monday. But you know,
we roll with the punches, the Star Wars Day punches. Oh,
random aside, I just have to put this in here.
We recently did our Aliens episode and I'm there. I

(04:02):
briefly mentioned Alien three and I said, I don't know
who directed Alien three, but I know Josh Whedon wrote it.
David Fincher directed Alien three, and I just want to clearly,
I want that out of my system. When I remembered that,
it like broke my brain, and I was so angry

(04:25):
at my past self.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
That you couldn't remember.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Yes, it was because I knew it was a famous director,
but I couldn't remember it was David Fincher, and I
thank you for the correction. I'm also mad that one
of my friends who has never seen that movie was like,
oh the David Fincher, Oh she's the reason she did
you she did.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
I don't know if illow you once and then it once.
I can't remember what it was. I just remember having
a very big.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Victory over it. I feel like you've done it a
couple of times.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Have I Okay, I just remember the one. Maybe you
can't remember what it was.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
Maybe you had one that was like excruciatingly like a
throwdown for me, and you counted it twice. Yeah, I
could see that. I could see that. Well anyway, I
had to get that out of my system. Oh no, yes,
So this Star Wars Day does feel strange. I usually

(05:24):
last year we went to a drag show. I usually
go to the Plaza because they show one. The Plaza
is a local independent theater in Atlanta. But this year
they're showing Attack to the Clones, which I have to
say it might be one of my Ley's favorites. That

(05:44):
one's It does have a killer soundtrack, of course it does,
because it's John Williams. I just don't know if I
can I don't know. But last year I didn't go
when they showed Phantom Menace and the actor who plays
Obi Wan Kenobi Want McGregor showed up at the showing,
and I still regret that.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Well, you do know that, Like there's a huge film
festival happening in Atlanta and a lot of celebrity to
hear going to the plaza specifically, like Josh Brolin has
been here for his movie, so it wouldn't be surprising.
I don't know someone showed up. I'm just letting you know.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
I have to weigh the pros and cons. Yeah, the potentials. Yeah,
you know I did rewatch Clone Wars maybe a couple
of years ago. I know, I made you watch the
whole thing. You sure did the prequels, and it wasn't
as bad as I remember it being. But I think

(06:42):
that's because I remembered it being so awful.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
You did build it up to be like this is little,
this is just awful. This is the worst.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
Yeah, what's his name?

Speaker 2 (06:53):
That one character you can't stand?

Speaker 1 (06:56):
I have a couple of those on the fort.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Yeah, Alien who kind of just like is really clumsy
the entire time.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
Oh, George ar Binks.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Yeah, yeah, Well a lot gave me a lot of
heads up about that.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
Well, I think that was fair of me. I think
that was a legitimate thing for me to do. I
actually pat myself on the back for warning you. One

(07:34):
of the interesting things though, because I was talking to
a friend of ours about our thoughts on the Prequels, because,
as we've discussed before, they kind of are going through
a renaissance right now, and he said he really appreciated
Clone Wars as he was older, and he kind of

(07:54):
gave me his reasons why, and I ultimately disagreed. But
I kind of wonder if it's like the Romantic one,
and so I kind of wonder if I'm just.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Not Is this the one where he talks about how
he hates sand Is that one? Yes?

Speaker 1 (08:09):
And I agree, you're a really it's a fair point too.
It gets everywhere. It's course, it gets everywhere. Yeah, So
I wonder if that's part of why I don't like
that one so much. I'll have to reevaluate. The thing is,
And this is part of what I want to talk

(08:30):
about today, is that the Prequels, as many issues as
they have, which I think are numerous, watching them now,
it just hits differently because they are very much here's
your democracy and here's the insidious effort that overturns it,

(08:56):
and all of the ways and the good faith, the
way good faith is manipulated to overturn it. I mean,
people have done side by sides of the rise of
Donald Trump and the rise of the Emperor from the prequels,
and it's unsettling. It's like legitimately, like they even have

(09:20):
a scene in the third one where the Emperor it says,
this attack on my life has left me to fall,
and he's got like a bandage on his ear. Is
that Donald Trump? It's the same thing. It's eerie, it's
really eerie. But it's about a fall of a republic

(09:42):
and a bunch of institutions and then many many years
of fascism and death and all of that that comes
from it. And then you get to a new hope,
and you know a new hope is coming, and so
that's exciting and you're like, yes, yes, But then they

(10:03):
came out with the sequels, and the sequels were actually
like no, just kidding about that new hope. Park And
I was watching Return of the Jedi with a friend
of mine the other day and she said, this movie
used to be so I would get to the end
and I'd be so optimistic, and now I just know

(10:25):
what's coming in the sequels, and I'm like, let's just
end it here, friend, let's pretend the sequels.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
We're just gonna pretend it didn't happen.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
Well, put them in a separate category. You can you
can have the days where you need it to end there,
and then you can have the days where you reconcile
with the fact that they did not in fact in there.
But a lot of new Star Wars stuff is really political,

(10:54):
and it's always been very political. It's very it's very philosophical, like,
you know, superficially, it's kind of a kid's fairy tale
in space, and that's the most like base way I
could describe it. I think it's much more than that, obviously,
but if you think about why people get so invested
in arguing about it, it is very philosophical. There's a

(11:17):
lot of religious arguments you can have, there's a lot
of political arguments you can have. And I feel like
a lot of the new stuff that's coming out is
very political. So I don't want to say that's like
deviating from the norm, but it's much darker when we
did our original Star Wars Princess Leia episodes, we talked

(11:41):
about why they were so successful. At least one of
the main reasons they were so successful, and it's because
they were optimistic in a time of it was like
the Vietnam War, and people wanted to see something that
wasn't so grim, and it also had a lot of
facts people hadn't seen for but because it's so dark,

(12:04):
and because the world we live in is so dark,
and like the season in season two of and Or,
they have a speech that feels like it's about Donald Trump,
but that it was written before he was re elected, I believe,
But it just is like, oh my gosh, this is
the world we're living in. So it doesn't feel like

(12:26):
the escape that I go to it for. So I
actually haven't watched and Or season two. It's been out
for a long time. It's been on my calendar for
a long time, and I keep moving it week per week,
like are you ready to mentally handle it this week? No?
All right, push to the next week. And I know

(12:48):
it's good. I know I'll like it. I think it'll
depressed me, but I'll like it. And I was thinking
about this too, because I've you know, been open about
how in some cases, when the pandemic happened. For instance,
here I was playing The Last of Us Too, which
is an extremely depressing game, and it was like my

(13:12):
comfort game. But I think that the politics aspect of
Star Wars in and Or in this case is something
that feels way more real to me. And so it's
not I don't know, it doesn't have that level of
Catharsis that the Last of Us two had for me.

(13:34):
So yes, I have been putting off watching and Or,
which is funny too because and Or season two ends
right before Rogue one begins. Your favorite film. I just

(13:54):
made a mistake, is all it haven't. And when I
saw Rogue one it was really sad and depressing, but
I again I knew a new hope was coming. But
now the sequels hangover the whole thing. And I don't
even want to talk about all of the retcons I'm

(14:16):
having to deal with right now. But that's that's another reason.
I'm just like, you know what, maybe I'll stick to
my fan fiction for now, my original trilogy, and let
you all sort this out and stop putting me through
emotional turmoil for decisions that you will backtrack on months

(14:39):
later Anyway, I did also want to briefly mention because
Savers doing an episode on this around this time of year,
there is a lot of marketing that comes out Star
Wars marketing, and we're doing some of the biggest examples

(15:05):
of all time. And I was researching that before we
started recording this actually, and you know, for better or worse,
and a lot of people would say for worse Star
Wars was there in the early days they were like
pioneering the marketing game, and I was surprised that it

(15:25):
was in nineteen seventy seven when the first one came out,
they were already like Burger king seller stuff. So that's
interesting to me that now, like if you go to
the store right now, you'll see multiple, multiple items. And
sometimes it makes me laugh that, you know, Darth Vader

(15:52):
is on everything. He would be so angry. But also,
you know, the message of the original trilogy was very
fascism is bad. Maybe not do give all these companies
all this money, and then here it is, it's everywhere.

(16:20):
One of the reasons this is this particular aspect of
this conversation that's been on my mind is I did vote.
It is the preliminary election here in Georgia. The ballot
was very long. It took me a long time actually,

(16:44):
both to research and to vote. Now, the line there
was no line walked right in early voting, and I
got one of those fantastic kind of passive aggressive postcards
in the mail that was like, we can't tell who
you vote for, but we'll know if you voted, yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
Which is really not cool. That's such a weird we
have on record. Well, bro, that makes me not want
to vote, even though I'm a proponent voting. Stop doing that.

Speaker 1 (17:13):
The one I got was so cute, I didn't mind.
It had like a lot of like drawings of stars
on it. I was like, oh, okay, cute drawings as
they threatened me. Yes essentially essentially. But you know, obviously

(17:34):
a lot is going on when it comes to politics,
not only in the US but in the world. But uh,
Star Wars has been utilized in that UH as kind
of a source of rebellion in a lot of cases,
and sometimes what I think is a really fundamental misunderstanding
of what movies mean on the ultra conservative side, but

(17:58):
people using like Obi wan speech about the fall Republic
and people using Lea as a joined the resistance kind
of sign which we talked about in the Princess La episodes.
So that's one of the reasons it's been on my mind.
I guess I was kind of trying to think of
how we're going to celebrate this Star Wars day and

(18:20):
I was like, we could watch and or and I
was like, oh, no, I just don't think I'm ready.
I don't think i'm ready for it. I think I
need the optimism. I think I need the optimism. And
then one other thing I was thinking about was wanting
to hold on to things, this kind of idea of
wanting to hold on to I want to hold onto

(18:44):
the idea that it did work out after Return of
the Jedi, which I had long held until the sequels
came out, and I was reading the books and the
comics and all of that, and just all of these
things that sometimes give me anxiety. When I see other
people have moved on, I guess like they're like, yeah.

Speaker 2 (19:08):
That.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
They're never going to bring back the Jedi or the
Republic or any new new ideas, which maybe they do.
But there's a part of me that wants to hold
on to this, and so I I have been trying
to examine. I don't know the pros and cons. I

(19:32):
guess it's It's ultimately an escapism for me, so I
don't want to take it too too seriously. But in
the real world, yes, I should be examining somethings. But
in my escapist world sometimes I need it to end

(19:53):
at Return of the Jedi.

Speaker 2 (19:55):
Yeah that's fair.

Speaker 1 (19:56):
Yep, yep. And I you know, I probably won't even
see the new movie. I'll wait and see what people say.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
But there's a new movie.

Speaker 1 (20:07):
With the Mandalorian and Grogu yep. Oh, Burger King has
a whole menu based on it. Really, Yes, how little
I know? Okay, yes, not a sponsor. Not a sponsor
by the way, Yeah, I'll see. But I've also just been,

(20:27):
as I've been very open about on the show, I
have been depressed and hyper fixated lately, and so getting
me out of the house requires like luring me with
something uh perfect. Yeah, not even a Star Wars movie
is always enough. Sometimes it needs to be something else also,

(20:51):
But I'm coming out of that slowly. Yes, yes, it's yes. Well,
one thing I do love and I would love for
