Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is Annie.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
And Smetana.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
And welcome to Stuff We Never Told You, a production
of iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
And welcome to another edition of Happy Hour. Annie, before
we start, are you doing anything Happy Hour-ish?
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Yes. So my mom, I got to hang out with
my mom yesterday, and she bought me, once more, a
lot of wines. So I'm drinking a dark red wine.
It's very nice.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Is it from one of the local vineyards? Mm-hmm. Nice.
Three sisters. Nice.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
They've been around for a minute.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
They've been around for a minute, minute. I am drinking
on my bubbly water because we have to get a
lot of things done. Yeah. A lot of things done.
So I'm trying to keep on track. And we have
already talked about my sleepiness. But by the way, I
will say I am trying to... Not necessarily drink more,
but I'm trying to drink a little more to build
(01:08):
my tolerance. Maybe try to get past the sleepiness because, Annie. Yes.
You know what's happening in October?
Speaker 1 (01:16):
I do, but please tell me.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Let me tell you. I'm trying to build up so
I can hang out and enjoy good, real-life happy hours
on our voyage with Virgin Voyages. Correct. You heard me correctly.
We will be sailing with our friends from Virgin Voyages
from October 2nd through the 7th with their Stuff at
Sea voyage. And I'm very excited about this. This is
(01:41):
a five-night adults-only sailing that will have us, Stuff Mom
Never Told You, and our producer, Rima, as well as
Stuff You Should Know and Stuff They Don't Want You
to Know doing a live podcast. Yes, so if you
wondered what these look like, You can find out. You
can come and listen to us as we are recording
live for one of our episodes later down the road.
(02:03):
Cross our fingers. We get to hang out with you,
the listener, hopefully, if you get to come out with us.
And yes, this is 2026. Just in case. Just in
case you listen to this years down the road. Maybe
we'll be doing it again. Who knows? But we are
so excited to to take this time and take this
break with y'all to do happy hourish things. And like
(02:24):
I said, I'm going to get to my drinking a
little more to help build up my tolerance so I
can hang with y'all. But also probably mocktails. Mocktails will
probably be a thing. Yeah, totally. Anyway, so if you
want to, go check out virginvoyages.com slash stuff for more information.
But with that, I also have to ask you, Annie. Uh-huh.
(02:47):
How are you? Hmm. Yeah, no, the dreaded question. How
are you?
Speaker 1 (02:55):
I'm overwhelmed. I think that's the word I would use
right now. Because we do have a lot of stuff
at work that's going on. I'm getting ready to go
to DragonCon. In theory, I'm getting ready to do Dungeons & Dragons.
I only make that sound because it's going to be
(03:16):
a lot of work for me. I'm very excited about it.
But it's a lot of work. And randomly, my landlord yesterday,
which was my birthday, texted me and said, I need
to get in your apartment and clean your AC unit.
(03:40):
Not only was I mad because he made it sound
like he needed to do it immediately and it was
my birthday, but also... This is a whole thing I'm
going to have to do now because, Samantha, you've seen
my apartment.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
It's packed.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
I'm going to have to move the table that's in
front with all of this precarious nerd stuff on it.
I'm going to have to move that table. I'm going
to have to move everything underneath it. And so that's
just become a whole thing where.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Like, of all the times....
Speaker 1 (04:12):
I have all this stuff to do and now I
think that's going to take me a good bit. So
tomorrow I'm going to be working on that.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
So he didn't come yesterday.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
I told him it's my birthday and my mom is
I actually didn't tell them it was my birthday because
that felt sad. I told them my mom was there. Oh, no.
Which was true.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
Yeah, so I didn't do a timestamp, but I'm going
to do a timestamp real quick. It is 8-25-2026. Annie's
birthday was 8-24. Yes. So, because the episode will be
a little later. Yes, happy belated birthday, my love. I
did send you a gift.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
You did.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
And we're doing our birthday celebration tomorrow. Tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Yes, and I'm excited.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Yes, we're doing our traditional thing. But, oh, that is annoying.
And overwhelmed is like a good word, I think, for life. Yeah.
Between all of the announcements that we're getting, I just
read that Dolly Parton has died. I am heartbroken. I
did cry. She was an amazing woman and deserves to
be celebrated. Yeah. So there's a lot happening. And I
(05:24):
thought we would take a moment to see how everybody's doing.
I am excited that we're going to do a new
adventure coming up, meaning the voyage, because this is something
brand new to me. I have gone into hyperdrive in
trying to overprepare. That includes sending lots of texts to people,
specifically Annie, and to my partner who's like, I don't
(05:46):
know what's happening, as well as watching a lot of YouTubes. Mm-hmm.
About Virgin. Yes, Virgin Voyages. I have been studying you.
I think I'm ready for you now. I'm really excited
that this is happening. But it does feel like there's
so much going on. And I just wondered how everybody
was doing at this time because it feels like constant
(06:09):
berating of news, whether it's food crisis, power outages, water outages,
data center outages. information flock, surveillance stuff that is happening,
upcoming elections, Supreme Court decisions. There's a lot. It feels really, really,
(06:29):
really heavy. And I think it's important that we do
take some time to listen to each other to see
how we are all doing. And also, I think this
is one of the ways to make sure that we
don't get apathetic, which is really, really the most dangerous thing,
I think, when it comes to times like this, when
we get so overwhelmed that we just quit or we
(06:52):
get so desensitized to what is happening that we start
like just accepting it and be like, yeah, that's about right.
So making sure that we are connecting with each other
as a community and making sure everybody is still here.
I know it's not always going to feel like it's okay.
(07:15):
I know it's not going to always feel like we
have a solution. It's definitely not rainbows. It's definitely not
rainbows and glittery stars all the time. But we do
have a moment to understand that we are a community
together and that we see each other. So I want
y'all to know we see you, even if we don't
(07:36):
know you personally. We know that people who have struggled
or who are overwhelmed or who are burdened or who
are hurt or who are scared, who are angry, That
we are all here together because we have all felt
those emotions together, and that's okay. But the not okay
part is to become apathetic and let things slide. We
(08:00):
need to find the victories where we can. The win
is a win. I always say that. Let me have this.
I need this. I do say that a lot. Let
me have this. I need this. Train videos. I love
a good train video.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Some listeners wrote in about those train videos.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Did they? Oh, I'm excited to read that because y'all.
I need train adventures. That's what I've decided. First, I'm
going to do this voyage, which is a brand new adventure. Next,
I need to do like a sleeper overnight train adventure.
So we're going to connect. I'm also really fascinated at
the people who have begun this. they've done this for
(08:42):
a minute, but like the train series, like going on
different trains. I think they've run out of trains. A
lot of people seem to be running out of trains
and have like graduated to like first class flights. And
I'm like, I definitely cannot afford that.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Your best bet is some random, there has been a
malfunction and you got upgraded randomly.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Or if our buddies over at Virgin Voyages wants to
tell Virgin Atlantic that, hey, We have two amazing podcasters
who need to travel first class to somewhere really fun. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
We're here.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Or, you know, just saying. But with all of that,
I think that we need to make sure that we
do have those moments of finding joy. What is your joy?
What is your outlet? And even though private equity and
corporations kind of, stole and bogarted the term self-care. Self-care
(09:43):
is still necessary. And I'm not talking about you need
to buy products and you need to buy $ 300 spa packages,
but just taking that time to touch grass in a
nice way, whatever that might look like. And we hope
that you were able to do that, whether it's it
is to turn on YouTube, ASMR, train videos, or whether
(10:06):
it is to sit with your friends and have a
good conversation. Or whether it is to go to a
very crowded establishment that has a time where everybody dresses
in their favorite cosplay and gets to be swept up
for three days in a magical world of... Well, it's
(10:27):
not always fiction. But a lot more fiction than not, right? Yes.
Is there non-fiction cosplay that happens?
Speaker 1 (10:35):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Tell me about those. Yes.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
So, actually... Friend of the show, Holly, has a good friend, Bernie,
who I know and have hung out with and roomed
with at Disney World.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Oh, yes, yes.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
Bernie writes historical, I don't think it's fiction, but it
might be. But she writes like women spies.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
Oh, yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
So she usually has a panel every year at Dragon Con,
which is the events Samantha is referencing. And so every
year there's a historical panel. uh track they call them
tracks at dragon con and so there will be people
who go as somebody from history our our friend group
was gonna do um three we were gonna do pearls
(11:27):
we were gonna do like i don't know three different
variations of pearls one from spongebob Yeah. I was going
to be the one from X, like that horror movie series.
But our other friend, she was going to go as,
it was the historical figure who was named Pearl. I can't,
for the life of me, remember.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Oh. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
I like that. We would only work together. Like her
costume specifically, I think, would only work.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Okay, I got you. Yeah. Well, I love that. I love,
I was just thinking about that. But in general- Finding
happiness in those moments, in what is whatever is for you.
Because not everything is for you. Dragon Con is not
for me. My train to ASMR probably is not for any.
You're like, what are you doing here? And that's fine.
(12:18):
We just want you to know that we want you
to take care of yourself. Like, take a moment. Oftentimes,
our happy hours become unhappy hours or a bitch and whine.
And this is that moment of like, yes, bitching can
be cathartic as well. but finding joy in whatever way
you need to. And we hope you are able to
get that. If you need, again, someone to talk to,
(12:41):
we don't respond quickly some of the times, especially if
it's social media and email. We're like, okay, we'll get
there because we are a little bit overwhelmed over here.
But know that we are listening. Know that we are
reading and we are seeing it. And know that you're
not alone. No, it's a hard time. It's a hard
time out here. We get it. But finding joy is
(13:02):
okay to find joy. And I think that's the other
part is like people are, how can you be happy?
Or how can you be this, this, and this? Or
how can you have a good place in life? Because
I've felt guilt in feeling okay in where I am.
But that's okay. Like in that, like, it's good to
feel okay. It's good to feel that way. But at
the same time, understand that privilege does come with like,
(13:25):
but keep on the lookout. Like we'll keep watching. And
I think that's where we have to get that point across,
is that we're all at different places and we should
be allowed to celebrate where we can, but continue to
fight together. So cheers to y'all. And we hope, again,
(13:46):
let us know what's going on with you. Let us
know how you're caring for yourself. Let us know what
you are looking forward to. Yes.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
We love hearing from you. Somebody recently wrote in about
their love of Miss Frizzle. And it gave me a
lot of joy.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
So, yes.
