Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hey, this is Annie.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
And Samantha.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
And welcome to Stuff Now I've Told You, a production
of iHeartRadio. And welcome to another edition of Happy Hour.
As always, if you're choosing to drink or whatever you're
choosing to do, please do so responsibly. Samantha, are you
sipping on anything?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Bubble water, because we're recording a lot today.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
We are recording a lot. We're preparing... To go on
a voyage.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Voyage.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Yes. And by the time you hear this, we'll be
back from said voyage. But the time of recording has
not happened yet. So this is really interesting because this
topic was a suggestion for our voyage from a listener,

(00:59):
friend of the show, Lena. Yeah. Please write in if
I'm mispronouncing that. I know you wrote in once about
how to pronounce her name, and I can't find that
email again. Please write in if I've got it wrong.
But Lena suggested a couple of ideas for our voyage,
and one of them caught my eye. Well, actually, both

(01:20):
of them did, but one of them was more intensive.
This one I thought would just be a fun conversation,
and that's about couples' costumes. So as we're recording this now,
it's still... september september 22nd so we haven't gotten into
october yet but you know by the time this comes
out yeah halloween full swing and i just thought that

(01:41):
was a really interesting question because lena basically asked like
are they sexy or cute are they clever overdone what
are your thoughts so i thought we could have that
conversation here and luckily we I'm so glad that I
brought it up when we were talking to Bridget recently.
And Bridget had some thoughts.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
She did. And they were all very different from mine. Yes.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
I will say you were probably different than both of us.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
We'll get into kind of our thoughts in a second.
What I'm going to start with is that I have
done couples costumes. I've also done group costumes. And this
is what I kind of want to get into in
a minute is kind of the implication of like a
romantic couple when it says couples costumes. I have done
one of those. And I was the Winter Soldier and

(02:36):
the guy I was dating was Captain America. I don't
think he was super into it. But I also didn't
make him do like, he basically just wore a jacket.
Like a specific type of jacket. We looked really good.
We have a great couple's photo with it. But I

(02:58):
think that's the only time I've done it in a
romantic sense. I did do it with a friend, a
good friend of mine, to DragonCon. We went as, she
went as Astrid, who we've done an episode on, a
fictional woman around the world. And I went as Hiccup
from How to Train Your Dragon. And we looked good.
You were there that year. You and your partner were there.
And your partner tried to take photos of us, but

(03:20):
Dragon Con's notoriously not a great place to take photos. No. Yeah.
But that's pretty much my experience with the couple's costume.
I mean, I guess you and I have done, like,
joke onesies before.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Yeah. Yeah. But we didn't do it, like, Halloween. We
did it for staying at home.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Yeah, we were, like, separate but together in this way. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Yes. Yes. It was New Year's?

Speaker 1 (03:50):
New Year's.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Okay, okay, okay.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Well, what about you? Have you done?

Speaker 2 (03:56):
So, here's a negative Nancy of it all, and I
apologize to all the Nancys, but that's the phrase I know.
I hate costumes. Mainly because, and I've said this before,
this is one of those many things, this is one
of the part of the, like, accumulation of why I

(04:18):
don't love the holidays, birthdays, all of these things. The
layer of expectations that are with this, and maybe it's
because I am jealous of my friends who are really
good at costuming, who are really good at being creative,
and or have the money to be creative. And it
wasn't until recently, so let's say right before COVID, that

(04:40):
I started getting a little extra money. And by that point,
we weren't going out anywhere. I'm definitely not going out anywhere.
And also the thought of spending hundreds of dollars on
a costume hurts my heart. Hurts my heart. So with
all of that said, it just became a thing where
I don't feel like I'm creative enough to get a costume.

(05:04):
And I may have a great idea, but it never
comes to play. And I'm like, yeah, that did not
work out like I thought it would. So those layers
of expectations and then the default of, like, I have
to do these things, and then also realizing going to
no longer, I'd no longer go to Target, but once
upon a time to Target to find these costumes that,

(05:24):
once again, are too ridiculously expensive. I just can't stand it.
I will say I am a lazy costumer, once again,
in this realm of, like, I hate and I'm not
creative enough. So I bought Jack-o'-lantern shirts. So I love
easy go-tos. So you just mentioned the onesies. Easy go-tos. Onesies, great.

(05:48):
I'm a panda bear. Don't touch my tail. T-shirts, wonderful.
I'm going to find, and I did find headbands that
had like the pumpkin tops, the jack-o'-lantern tops to look
like a jack-o'-lantern. And then I will match. I made
my partner get a onesie. He was a shark. Actually,
that's not true. He's the one that wanted to match me. Yeah,
because I was like, okay, you can do whatever you want. Sure.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
Sure.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
And he came as a shark while I came as
a panda. The only matching thing was we were species
and we were onesies. So obviously nothing too much. And
then because we were going to a Halloween party and
my friend, friend of the show, old co-host Caroline, who love, love,
loves Halloween, super, super creative, super fun, all of those

(06:35):
things that I am not, once again, fun included. She
was having a party. She's like, you have to at
least dress up something. So I came as a jack-o'-lantern
with a t-shirt. And my partner, he got one too
with a hat. So we were matching jack-o'-lanterns in the
most lazy way that you can be.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
Mm-hmm.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah. So that was fine. But I was like the trail,
the lead up to that one, the lead up to
that one and trying to figure out what to be
and then trying to have My partner helped to make
a decision was work. And finally, I just made a choice.

(07:15):
And I was like, I don't care what you think here.
He's like, okay, you want to do this? I was like,
don't complain. Don't want to be more creative because you
did not put input. This is you. And I think that's, again, like,
he's not awful about that. Usually we are really, like,
equal or he's sometimes more invested. But he's just not
a procrastinator. He's an ADHD-er. That's hyper-focused and then kind

(07:38):
of forgets about what's going on and then comes back
with like, oh, crap.

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Mm-hmm.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
I need to do this type of conversation. And I'm like, well,
it's too late. And so I'm the one who ends
up doing the things. And that drives me crazy. And
that also makes me miserable. So all of those things
come into I hate couples costumes, period. I like the
idea of it.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
Mm-hmm.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
I do like the idea. I love when people are
doing it and they look good and they put time.
I love that you're creative. I'm very, again, envious and
jealous of those who can do it well. Katie, friend
of the show, who is amazing at her creativity and
makes the best costumes, shocked. I love everything. I do

(08:24):
not have those skills. So I don't love doing it.
Those are my opinions. Very strong ones at that.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
It's so funny because I feel like hearing you talk
about it, you're putting like way too much on it
that I... Probably.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
But when you come, think about the fact that you
had your, well, first of all, all of your costumes
were intensive. And every time you're in the middle of
making it, you tell me how stressed you are because
there's something didn't work out. You have to redo something.
You're waiting for something or you're trying to glue something
back together. And then you stay in those costumes for

(09:06):
the next five years because you put so much time
and effort into it. I don't think I'm putting as much.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
As you do. I feel, and this is kind of
a distinction, a very telling distinction perhaps, but I don't,
Halloween costumes, I don't put that much in. Okay. Dragon Con, yes,
because there used to be a real air of judgment.
around if you just purchase something. I think that that

(09:35):
has lessened now. I think it's still there, but I
think because it's gotten so much bigger, it's not what
it used to be. But back when I first started going,
there was a huge, like, that has a faux pas
if you just bought this. So you had to put
in the effort. You had to, like, build the thing
or whatever it was. Halloween, I'll just, like, show up.

(09:58):
I'll show up in, like, the most basic... kind of
suggestion of something.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
But also you have a closet i do a closet
where you can just go back and be like i'll
just do this and then put it together i don't
have such.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
A thing this is true i do have that.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
I'm looking at her closet now yes everyone She has
a jacket ready to be Han and Luke in The
Last of Us.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
A million jackets. I literally have a jacket for, that's
all I have to put on is the jacket.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
That's what I'm saying. You're always, because also a part
of that is you're always low-key dressing up. Yes, I
love low-key cosplay. This is that other sentiment.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
You're already prepared for it.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
I am. But I feel like the last time I
went to a Halloween party, not Caroline's, because we did
go to Caroline's. I can't remember what I wore for that.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
You were a Luke of sorts.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
I'm sure I was. That makes sense.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
Because there was a Hans, and you two talked. Oh.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
Oh, well, before that, I just went, I went as
a version of Taylor Swift and I was just wearing
like a bathing suit and shorts and that was it.
And it was like close enough, you know, I didn't
put that much work into it.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
Again, it's also those creative ones, like people were like,
you know, the spice rack and they just put, or
the spice rolls and they put like, I'm like, no,
I can't even make that. When I tell you I
have no arts and crafts skills, I really have no
arts and crafts. I'm not even, like, being a pessimist.
I really don't have those skills. I wish I did.
You have a few. Not really. The ones that I can, like,

(11:51):
actually follow directions.

Speaker 1 (11:53):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (11:54):
Very explicit directions. Then I might do okay. I still
color very much outside the lines. I was like, yeah,
that still looks like a third grader did that one.
Not even a very good one.

Speaker 1 (12:08):
Well, I have some of your creative efforts in my
home and I enjoy them and I think they're good.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
My partner looked at one of those and said, what
is this supposed to be? And I had to explain it.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
Well, that's up for interpretation. Art is interpretive.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
I know.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
But one of the things I wanted to talk about
here is, so Bridget did have a very different take
than you.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
Yes, she loves it.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
She loves it. And they have a, her and her
partner have a Google Doc. They start like a month
in advance to plan. And I was so endeared by that.
I thought it was so adorable. And she said it
was like a deal breaker. Like if you're not willing
to participate in this, get out. Essentially. And so I

(13:10):
loved hearing that take on it. I'm very excited. I
really hope she sends me pictures from their planned, I'm
not going to spoil it, but their planned couple's costume
this year. But this is my thing. And I did
try to research this and look into people's thoughts about it.

(13:30):
I think that couple's costumes, as long as they're It
seems like both people, like there's not one miserable person
that clearly doesn't want to be doing it. I think
they're cute. I think they can be sexy. I think
they can be really funny. There are really, really funny
couples costumes. And as I was telling Samantha and Bridget,

(13:53):
I think there are some costumes that just work better
as a couple's costume because you might not recognize the
one person alone. But when you see the two characters together...
then you get it. So that's kind of my opinion
on them. I do love them. And I was thinking about,

(14:18):
because I've been in a lot of group costumes, I've
been in couples costumes, but not romantically. And that got
me thinking about queer couples and how it looks for them.
And then I found this list from Autostraddle about it
and the best queer couple costumes and I think those
you know some of that involves gender gender bending which

(14:42):
is when you know make a character the opposite gender
than they are but I really like that too like
I like like if I had been black when I
was doing Winter Soldier all the time and I had
a a woman like a friend who played Steve Rogers
I think that would have been fun I think that
would have been really cool yeah that would have been

(15:03):
amazing Yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
You can still do it. You still have that costume.

Speaker 1 (15:08):
I do still have that costume. That one is a
pain to put on. But it also, I hate to
retire it because I did, that one I did put
a lot of work into. Mm-hmm. It has four arms,
four winter soldier arms that I still have all of them,
but the fourth one is the best one.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
I remember.

Speaker 1 (15:28):
Yeah. But I just think that, I don't know, I
kind of like that the, Couples' costume for me so
long has been kind of the straight couples' costume. But
now it's very much expanded. And it's even kind of
expanded outside of that to be you and your friend
doing this. And as I said, some of them are hilarious.

(15:52):
And I recommend looking them up.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
You know, some of the costumes that I love even more,
group costumes.

Speaker 1 (15:59):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
Me too.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
Group costumes are awesome. So, like, I had a friend
who lived with, like, four other people, and their entire
house would be different things. Stranger Things was a big one.
I think they did Drag Queen, the drag show. Is
that the one?

Speaker 1 (16:15):
Let's go.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
RuPaul's Drag. Wow. Oh. Man, I just had him up.
RuPaul's Drag, like, they brought in different queens, and they were, like,
these are all gay men, so they were, like, dressing
up as that and having the best time. Like, I
think those are really... fun times I did one of
my best costumes is probably offensive and I apologize to

(16:37):
all of y'all it was what it was I was
kind of digging into my roots and my accent of
being country bumpkin essentially and I had the you know
missing tooth I had the best Fabio romance novel written
by Fabio supposedly uh-huh it was amazing and then the

(16:57):
war like all I did was have rollers cigarettes flip-flops
in this robe and I love that and for some
reason I did it again the next year because I
was like it was easy it was funny I was
really into character onto that one and I had people
joining me I didn't ask them to join me they
joined me and they would just be like you're my
common-law wife I'm like I don't know you I do
know them they were my friends and then this random

(17:19):
person came through being like the son I was like
what is happening they added themselves to my.

Speaker 1 (17:24):
Group that is fun too with uh costumes.

Speaker 2 (17:31):
When making friends with strangers because they dress either in
that same group or like in that same genre or
the same character yeah it's fun oh.

Speaker 1 (17:41):
Yeah and i know we've done episodes about this and
i don't think anybody listening needs to a reminder but
i would say also if you're doing a couple's costume
that is cringe for racist reasons or something.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
Like that that's not cool that's not.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
But otherwise, I'm on board. I think as long as
the people involved, I hate seeing a couple's costume where
like it feels like they're arguing.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
Oh, as in like they're arguing in real life, but
they're in a couple's costume?

Speaker 1 (18:15):
Like, it feels like clearly one of them was dragged
there and didn't want to do this and thinks it's embarrassing.
And actually, you brought up the episode of The Office
when we were talking about that.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
Yeah, yeah, I did.

Speaker 1 (18:26):
Where Jim and Pam, Pam really wanted this like family costume,
but Jim was like too cool to do it, even
though it was important for her.

Speaker 2 (18:35):
Obviously.

Speaker 1 (18:36):
And then he eventually did do it because she had
like this horrible day. But like that situation where I
see a couple that it's like, it feels like an
argument is happening, even if no words are being said.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:51):
Yeah. I don't like that. But otherwise.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
Yeah, show us the creative ones so I can be jealous.

Speaker 1 (18:57):
Yes, please. If you're doing one, if you have one
that you've seen that you loved, for this episode, I
was just looking up creative couples' costumes and I was
having a good time. And by the way, a friend
of the show, Katie, who we mentioned, she's going with
her boyfriend next year as Zool and Rick Moranis' character

(19:20):
from Ghostbusters. Sometimes you have to also take into account, like,
how much does somebody want to dress up? And sometimes
the answer is Rick Moran as this character from Ghostbusters.
And that's fine. That's fine. But yeah, let us know
if this is something you're doing, if you've seen some faves.
