One, which was my review of the Super Mario Brothers movie.

At how many people interacted with this and wrote in
about this. I recently have watched the new one, Super
Mario Brothers Galaxy, which is now streaming. Yes, so I'm
not gotta spoil it. I think outside of like the trailers,
but I'll give you, like my quick here's what I

think about it. So in this episode about the first one,
I was talking about how.

I was a.

Little concerned about how it was so Bowser wants to
marry Peaches and it doesn't matter what she wants, and
he doesn't know her, and he doesn't care about her
and all of this stuff, which is you know, on
course with the game. It's not like it came out
of nowhere. And I'll talk about this more in a second.
But I also felt like they were trying to make

her super badass because they knew they had this reputation
of the women always being the damsel in distress. The
princess is always in your castle and another castle, that
whole thing, and so they're trying to make her stronger,
but she's still kind of ended up being like seen
as a bride. But anyway, this one is much more

princess kidnappy. It's less marriage y, so more kidnappy. So Rosalina,
who is like presented as one of the most powerful,
if not the most powerful being in the galaxy, is
kidnapped in the beginning and pretty much spends most of

her time being kidnapped and captured. Yeah she does have
a like cool fight in the beginning, but yeah.

She mostly.

Is not not really there, kind of caged away. And
one of the things that's got to me too is
that there was this element of motherhood I wasn't quite
expecting with Rosalina having all of her little star babies,

and in the first one, you know, Peach kind of
have all of her mushroom children, I guess, but they
weren't presented as children so much. This was with Rosealina
was very much like mother child.

She has this hold on.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Like no one hurts my goods, all right, that's okay,
that's legit. But I just wasn't necessarily expecting that element.
There's a whole stealing women's power thing that's going on
here because they're essentially trying to drain Rosalina. Bowser and
his son are trying to drain Rosaline's power. But there's

also this dichotomy of absent fathers because in the first one,
it's made clear that Mario's father does not approve of
him and thinks he's a failure. And so Mario and
Bowser of like this bonding moment over that, and so
did him and DK in the first one. I guess wait,

they called Donkey Kong d K d K Donkey Ye.

Yes, I knew that was coming.

Yeah's going to try to trigger me.

So there's this element of like absent fathers because Bowser
wasn't there during the childhood of his son, Bowser Junior,
who is kind of the main villain of this one,
and Bowser Junior is trying to do anything to prove, uh,
you know, I'm worthy of your attention and we can

have all of these things that we used to talk
about back when he was around. So it was very
much passing on Bowser passing on this idea let's just
destroy everybody and roll the galaxy together, which his son internalized,
and now Bowser has the moment of like, oh, I
shouldn't have taught him that. Now I don't know what

to do. So there's that going on. There's still these
elements of rejection, lingering, rejection Bowser. I feel that Peaches,
in his words, humiliated him at his wedding, which again
she did not want to be there.

He knew she didn't want to be there, and he
called it my wedding, not there anyway. So there's.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Going back to the point I was talking about earlier.
I kind of feel like, and this isn't unique to
this property, because a lot of these big franchises do
have a history of damsel in distress. Women are only
there for serving the plot of the men. So I
(05:40):
feel like what a lot of people are doing a
lot of these franchises aren't doing, is they're trying to
pivot and sort of overcorrect wherein it's a female character
like Peach who you never see how she got so
strong or so tough or whatever she just is, but
then she still ends up being sidelined. So it feels

kind of like you're trying to have your cake and
eat it too. Like they're still not like the main characters.
They don't necessarily have the best story or like flesh
out story, but they're not like weak in quotes, like
they do know how to fight and do all that stuff.
Like Rosalina, as I said, most powerful person in the galaxy,

and it's in theory, but what I mean, most of
the movie is her not captured, So I don't know,
there's just I feel like there's a tension there of
they're trying to get away from that history and maybe
also honor the history, but also they still want to
(06:46):
give the main storylines to the dudes, and yeah, this
is Rosalina is kind of treated as like a reward
to be used, which is very much what happens in
the games. You can see our episode on we did
one on Princess Peach, which is when I learned that
you thought it was princesstoad Stool.

She was okay, she thing was You're right, early early

will say I kind of these movies are very nostalgic.
Like I wouldn't say that they're good. There's a part
of me that's like kind of mad at a lot

of them. But I watched it and I enjoyed it,
Like I don't know how to square that within myself,
but it did make me kind of sad that this
is some people's first introduction to Roselna. So if you've
never played the games, this is how you'll see her.
But then I was thinking about it more and I
was like, she's kind of a non person in the
games too, So I don't know, I don't know what

to make of it. Voice by Bree Larson by the way, Uh, Yeah,
they're very nostalgic. I think for people either that music
kicks in you saw somebody, you heard Samantha just says
DK and that song is there.

One of the characters they introduced in this one, besides you,
she is Starfux and I have very fond memories of
star Fox because it's from of the few games that
my best friend Katie growing up, she would play you normally,
I was the one that would play and she would watch,
but she was the one. I've never played at star Fox,

but I watched her play it, and I knew about
her hatred of the character Slippy in it, and they
have a joke in there about how Slippy is the worst,
so it kind of made me laugh.

Okay, So this episode, I know there's a lot going on.
There's a what we need to talk about. We are
going to talk about it, I promise. But I actually
wanted to talk about this. I mentioned it a month
ago that I watched I gave in and watched the
new Super Mario Brothers movie. I already had this written
because I think I wrote it like while I was

watching it. But I didn't want to release it during
Pride month because Chris Pratt. Oh yeah yeah, So I
was like, that doesn't feel right, So I will wait.

It's a bit dated, but we are there.

I don't I wouldn't say there's even spoilers, but if
you care, we are going to be talking about it.

But it is funny because.

What I thought you were talking about doing the old
Super Marios.

Okay, yes, so it is funny though, because your partner
and I I had never seen it, or if I had,
I was a kid and did not remember it at all,
and we tried to stay up watching it, and it
was more bizarre than I could even. I knew it
was going to be strange, but it was stranger, and

I didn't make it to the end. I need, I
need to go back and watch it.

I think need is a very strong word.

No, I for me, it's in need. For other people
avoid rightfully so, but for me, it's in need. It
actually came up my mom came to visit me in
Atlanta with my little brother and we had lunch, and
somehow it came up. Me and my little brother talked
about video games a lot, so I imagine that's what happened.

Seen the old one and was like, didn't I have
like Bob Hoskins.

The writers strike happens, and a lot of the entertainment
I usually enjoyed kind of went away. And I'm not
super Samantha and I were just talking about this. I
don't like TV shows give me anxiety. They give me anxiety.
I like something that's like one and done, and so
I eventually I gave in and I watched this movie.
I've seen it several times now. I will admit the

thing that it has going for it is nostalgia. It
is very, very nostalgic as a kid who grew up
playing like Donkey Kong, that whole scene, all the music.
It made me remember when I made you listen to
that theme song and I was quoting it incessantly for
a while, and it made me laugh because I used

Lot, yes, And I believe you and my partner still
do this, and I just there's obvious, like I am
the parent and you two are the children, having a
moment together and I am very lost and never come back.

I just like it's literally one of those like are
they hurting anyone?

Yes, but I looked back at our the last time
you and I ran the Peachey Road Race, which happens
every July fourth in person, your partner had texted me

And if he had sometimes to me, I'd be like, what.

sixty four Donkey Kong is horrible and hilarious, but it
is in the movie that was a fun like so
the music is really fun. There's like a Mario Kart
scene and yeah, that's really what it ads going for.
It is sort of the like, oh these were the

games I played or grew up with, or what have you?
Rainbow Road sing. This isn't really a review. I mean
I am reviewing it, but what I more wanted to
talk about is because we had are very hilarious in
my opinion, Princess Peach slash Toadstool episode in which it
was hilarious in that you kept saying you didn't know

who Princess Peach was, and I was like, I've seen
you play and.

I had no idea that's what she was called in
my head. Her name is Princess Toadstool.

Well, well, anyway, so you should go check out that
episode if you haven't, because we kind of talked about
sort of the sexism in these games, especially when it
comes to Peach is sort of your prize. The princess
is not a castle, which they have a joke about
in this movie. It was interesting because they try to

make a Peach more bad and I would say she
is she is, uh, But ultimately it does all come
down to Bowser is in love with her and wants
to marry her and is going to destroy her whole kingdom,

the Mushroom Kingdom if she doesn't agree, And so it's
weird because it's like they try to make her a
stronger character, like more of a character, and she definitely
has like she has, she's really proficient with weapons.

She's really to show up Mario a lot.

But ultimately it does boil down to He's trying to
Bowser's trying to marry her. And I was watching this
and it's not like that's new at all, because that
is like the game, that is exactly the plot we
talked about it in that episode we did on Princess
Peach lashto Tool that is the plot of one of
the games, is that he like tries to not only

kidnap her, which he does in almost everyone, but he.

Tries to marry her.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
And it was weird because I was watching this as
an adult and I was like, I can't believe it's
twenty twenty three and I'm watching a movie where marriage
is kind of being used as a weapon, where it's
very much like he's going to control her via marriage
and if she doesn't agree, he's going to kill everyone

she cares about. Obviously, yes, And and it's framed is
very funny and Jack Black is amazing, Like the song
is really good. He's really great actor. He's really funny
in it. But it's like kind of the funny aspect
of Toxic masculinity because he has so many lines that

are funny, but when you think about them, you're like, oh,
this is real messed up. Like he's essentially we're supposed
to laugh because he's this.

Big villain and he's like, oh, I want to have.

The happy fairy tale wedding, and you're like aha, but
then like, oh no, he's actually like trying to manipulate
this person, who he says is like beautiful and smart
and straw all this stuff into marrying him, and he
thinks that will make him very, very happy.

Line where he's yelling at Mario where he's like I
was finally gonna be happy, which I feel is like
very in cell kind of language when you're like talking
about what you're you know, if only this woman would
give me what I want, I would be happy and

But instance she didn't, and now he's resorting to all
this violence.

And I bet a lot of you listening are like, Eddie,
this was like a cartoon movie for kids, but I
can't turn off my feminist brain. And I was watching
this and I just thought, you know, kids are probably
watching it, loving it, and we're not it's strange to me.
I guess that it's still that was the plot line,

or maybe not strange, but not something I'm comforted by, right.

I mean, essentially we were. It does feel like a
step back when for so long we've been like, oh, yay,
we finally have a superhero or heroes that are women
who can do their own thing. But then we talked
about Marvel like yay women, Oh no, women are bad.
Apparently Still it gets the push back and forth of
like you're kind of doing it, but you're doing the
minimal and doing it and then you're doing it in

a way that's just not really well done. So is

I saw an article today we need to come back
to but it was like Marvel, you got to stop
fridging your women. But yeah, I mean essentially because like

she can hold her own she can do all this
stuff with weapons all and whatever.

Again, I kind of go back to the mad Max,
the new version with Charlie's their own, but like everybody
was so mad because it was like feminist because she
was the one that was driving the truck and there's
was women and all these things. But I'm like, but
still in the end, it was the Max dude who
had to sacrifice himself to save them all. He was
still the lead with this Charlie's character just staring in

anguish half the time. Like that was and I'm like,
it was a good movie. I wanted to support it
just because everybody, all the men were mad. I'm like,
this is the movie that you're mad at? Like this
is this one? Like if all the movies should be
mad at, it's say something like kill Bill, which the
antagonist is a woman that's killing everyone, including the teacher,

the main hero guy, and somehow y'all are okay with this,
like because it was made by a dude who kind
of actively hates women. I don't know, Like I'm not sure,
but the whole stance is like it's not as feminist
as you think it is, but you're mad because it's
implying they could be.

Yeah, that's the interesting thing because we've talked about that
a lot, because I feel like there's this thing especially
in like traditionally perceived as masculine spieces, so video games
is a huge one. And in fact, there was an
article did you see this Smith that there's an article
that came out the other day that said more women

play video games? And it got like raaks with the
cools by men who are like, that's some pop that's impossible.
It was just like a It was just a straight
up like this is the survey found and they were.

Like, oh, yes, yes, So this is still like a
huge deal in the video game world.

And I feel like in a lot of those cases
and a lot of those spaces, it's you can have
your women, you can have your like female character be
a little bit stronger, but only to a point, only
until she's still sexualized, only like she still has to
fit in our like masculine gaze.

And the fact that this was like.

A wedding storyline used to entrap her as even though
she's like quote, you know, more bad, it feels very
much like she's still being seen.

The Maria honestly gay because I played it for a
split second and then my partner enjoyed it way more
because I got to a point I'm like, I'm gonna
die all the time, so I quit now. Is the
plot point to rescue the princess?

I think it is.

So there is one game where the exact plot point
is that Bowser's in like a white wedding suit.

Yeah, I think that's I think I remember, Like, this
sounds really familiar. And I've never watched this movie. I've
never watched the previews. I know nothing about it. I
knew that Chris Pratt was gonna be the voice. I
was like, why, it doesn't even make sense. It's not sense.
So also to say that I have no interest, but
I feel like I think the Odyssey is the one

where the dude's like, I got I'm gonna marry her
and keeps kidnapping her and then he sends a Tinchman
to fight Mario in different scenarios, which I always die.
I always die. This is why I hate these games.
Been on the switch, still angry, It's okay, I'm okay.
But the plum point is that he has to get her,

him and Hattie whatever the name of the hat is. Yes,
that's how you can be a co op and I'm
still bad at it, but I'm trying to remember I
think that's the whole plot point. And I'm like, that's
a newer game and it's one of the most popular
games out there. The fact that it is a newer game,
I guess you have to have some kind of ultimate goal,

but it seems odd that this is the ultimate goal,
the marriage line, because I don't feel like the Super
Mario three that was the intent. It was just to
help her to find her right right.

A lot of them are just She's like, not in
your castle, you have to find her.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
And I will say.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
Maybe not in defensive but to clarify in the movie,
she does she agrees to the marriage because she's trying
to protect her people, but she does have a plan
to get out of it, and does she does attack
Bowser and he was like, well, then we're wreaking up

right now. So yeah, I'm working on my voices of

One of those things where I feel like they did.
They knew that our conversation has changed since the games
came out. People wouldn't be happy if that was the
whole plot point, so they kept trying to give you
like no seapeaches really strong and she was, but it
still felt like just a little bit and she still
ended up. Yeah, Mario had to save her and Bowser,

perhaps not surprisingly, did not take rejection really well. And
so there's like this whole scene that I was just
a iagining kids watching of this guy being like, you've
ruined everything, you made me so sell like all this stuff.
And then yeah, Mario and Luigi's ate the day it
really you know, like I said, it was nostalgic. I

liked that part of it that I just thought, I
just because it's really really popular. That movie has been
the number one on like all renting platforms since it
became available to rent.

Really yeah, he was the only person that I know
that's watched that movie.

because at the end, like Yoshi, who wasn't in it,

assume they made enough money. I'm sure they're gonna make
another one. But yeah, I just you know what if

One, which was my review of the Super Mario Brothers movie.

So I was surprised.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
At how many people interacted with this and wrote in
about this. I recently have watched the new one, Super
Mario Brothers Galaxy, which is now streaming. Yes, so I'm
not gotta spoil it. I think outside of like the trailers,
but I'll give you, like my quick here's what I
(00:57):
think about it. So in this episode about the first one,
I was talking about how.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
I was a.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Little concerned about how it was so Bowser wants to
marry Peaches and it doesn't matter what she wants, and
he doesn't know her, and he doesn't care about her
and all of this stuff, which is you know, on
course with the game. It's not like it came out
of nowhere. And I'll talk about this more in a second.
But I also felt like they were trying to make
(01:28):
her super badass because they knew they had this reputation
of the women always being the damsel in distress. The
princess is always in your castle and another castle, that
whole thing, and so they're trying to make her stronger,
but she's still kind of ended up being like seen
as a bride. But anyway, this one is much more
(01:50):
princess kidnappy. It's less marriage y, so more kidnappy. So Rosalina,
who is like presented as one of the most powerful,
if not the most powerful being in the galaxy, is
kidnapped in the beginning and pretty much spends most of
(02:13):
her time being kidnapped and captured. Yeah she does have
a like cool fight in the beginning, but yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
She mostly.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Is not not really there, kind of caged away. And
one of the things that's got to me too is
that there was this element of motherhood I wasn't quite
expecting with Rosalina having all of her little star babies,
(02:48):
and in the first one, you know, Peach kind of
have all of her mushroom children, I guess, but they
weren't presented as children so much. This was with Rosealina
was very much like mother child.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
She has this hold on.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Like no one hurts my goods, all right, that's okay,
that's legit. But I just wasn't necessarily expecting that element.
There's a whole stealing women's power thing that's going on
here because they're essentially trying to drain Rosalina. Bowser and
his son are trying to drain Rosaline's power. But there's
(03:27):
also this dichotomy of absent fathers because in the first one,
it's made clear that Mario's father does not approve of
him and thinks he's a failure. And so Mario and
Bowser of like this bonding moment over that, and so
did him and DK in the first one. I guess wait,
(03:50):
they called Donkey Kong d K d K Donkey Ye.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
Yes, I knew that was coming.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Yeah's going to try to trigger me.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
You knew, because I was I was just asking.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
Yeah, right.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
So there's this element of like absent fathers because Bowser
wasn't there during the childhood of his son, Bowser Junior,
who is kind of the main villain of this one,
and Bowser Junior is trying to do anything to prove, uh,
you know, I'm worthy of your attention and we can
(04:27):
have all of these things that we used to talk
about back when he was around. So it was very
much passing on Bowser passing on this idea let's just
destroy everybody and roll the galaxy together, which his son internalized,
and now Bowser has the moment of like, oh, I
shouldn't have taught him that. Now I don't know what
(04:50):
to do. So there's that going on. There's still these
elements of rejection, lingering, rejection Bowser. I feel that Peaches,
in his words, humiliated him at his wedding, which again
she did not want to be there.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
He knew she didn't want to be there, and he
called it my wedding, not there anyway. So there's.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Going back to the point I was talking about earlier.
I kind of feel like, and this isn't unique to
this property, because a lot of these big franchises do
have a history of damsel in distress. Women are only
there for serving the plot of the men. So I
(05:40):
feel like what a lot of people are doing a
lot of these franchises aren't doing, is they're trying to
pivot and sort of overcorrect wherein it's a female character
like Peach who you never see how she got so
strong or so tough or whatever she just is, but
then she still ends up being sidelined. So it feels
(06:03):
kind of like you're trying to have your cake and
eat it too. Like they're still not like the main characters.
They don't necessarily have the best story or like flesh
out story, but they're not like weak in quotes, like
they do know how to fight and do all that stuff.
Like Rosalina, as I said, most powerful person in the galaxy,
(06:25):
and it's in theory, but what I mean, most of
the movie is her not captured, So I don't know,
there's just I feel like there's a tension there of
they're trying to get away from that history and maybe
also honor the history, but also they still want to
(06:46):
give the main storylines to the dudes, and yeah, this
is Rosalina is kind of treated as like a reward
to be used, which is very much what happens in
the games. You can see our episode on we did
one on Princess Peach, which is when I learned that
you thought it was princesstoad Stool.

She was okay, she thing was You're right, early early
millennials know.

She was Princess.

Told school, who the hell is Princess Peach.

hilarious because I was like, you don't know who Princess Peaches.

We figured it out in the end, we figured it out.
But yeahspect you can go check that episode out. I
will say I kind of these movies are very nostalgic.
Like I wouldn't say that they're good. There's a part
of me that's like kind of mad at a lot

of them. But I watched it and I enjoyed it,
Like I don't know how to square that within myself,
but it did make me kind of sad that this
is some people's first introduction to Roselna. So if you've
never played the games, this is how you'll see her.
But then I was thinking about it more and I
was like, she's kind of a non person in the
games too, So I don't know, I don't know what

to make of it. Voice by Bree Larson by the way, Uh, Yeah,
they're very nostalgic. I think for people either that music
kicks in you saw somebody, you heard Samantha just says
DK and that song is there.

One of the characters they introduced in this one, besides you,
she is Starfux and I have very fond memories of
star Fox because it's from of the few games that
my best friend Katie growing up, she would play you normally,
I was the one that would play and she would watch,
but she was the one. I've never played at star Fox,

but I watched her play it, and I knew about
her hatred of the character Slippy in it, and they
have a joke in there about how Slippy is the worst,
so it kind of made me laugh.

ago that I watched I gave in and watched the
new Super Mario Brothers movie. I already had this written
because I think I wrote it like while I was

watching it. But I didn't want to release it during
Pride month because Chris Pratt. Oh yeah yeah, So I
was like, that doesn't feel right, So I will wait.

It's a bit dated, but we are there.

I don't I wouldn't say there's even spoilers, but if
you care, we are going to be talking about it.

But it is funny because.

What I thought you were talking about doing the old
Super Marios.

Okay, yes, so it is funny though, because your partner
and I I had never seen it, or if I had,
I was a kid and did not remember it at all,
and we tried to stay up watching it, and it
was more bizarre than I could even. I knew it
was going to be strange, but it was stranger, and

I didn't make it to the end. I need, I
need to go back and watch it.

I think need is a very strong word.

No, I for me, it's in need. For other people
avoid rightfully so, but for me, it's in need. It
actually came up my mom came to visit me in
Atlanta with my little brother and we had lunch, and

about video games a lot, so I imagine that's what happened.

Seen the old one and was like, didn't I have
like Bob Hoskins.

The writers strike happens, and a lot of the entertainment

super Samantha and I were just talking about this. I
don't like TV shows give me anxiety. They give me anxiety.
I like something that's like one and done, and so
I eventually I gave in and I watched this movie.
I've seen it several times now. I will admit the

thing that it has going for it is nostalgia. It
is very, very nostalgic as a kid who grew up
playing like Donkey Kong, that whole scene, all the music.
It made me remember when I made you listen to
that theme song and I was quoting it incessantly for
a while, and it made me laugh because I used

Lot, yes, And I believe you and my partner still
do this, and I just there's obvious, like I am
the parent and you two are the children, having a
moment together and I am very lost and never come back.

I just like it's literally one of those like are
they hurting anyone?

Yes, but I looked back at our the last time
you and I ran the Peachey Road Race, which happens
every July fourth in person, your partner had texted me

And if he had sometimes to me, I'd be like, what.

the music is really fun. There's like a Mario Kart
scene and yeah, that's really what it ads going for.
It is sort of the like, oh these were the

games I played or grew up with, or what have you?
Rainbow Road sing. This isn't really a review. I mean
I am reviewing it, but what I more wanted to
talk about is because we had are very hilarious in
my opinion, Princess Peach slash Toadstool episode in which it
was hilarious in that you kept saying you didn't know

who Princess Peach was, and I was like, I've seen
you play and.

I had no idea that's what she was called in
my head. Her name is Princess Toadstool.

By the way, it didn't make sense to me.

Well, well, anyway, so you should go check out that
episode if you haven't, because we kind of talked about
sort of the sexism in these games, especially when it
comes to Peach is sort of your prize. The princess
is not a castle, which they have a joke about
in this movie. It was interesting because they try to

make a Peach more bad and I would say she
is she is, uh, But ultimately it does all come
down to Bowser is in love with her and wants
to marry her and is going to destroy her whole kingdom,

the Mushroom Kingdom if she doesn't agree, And so it's
weird because it's like they try to make her a
stronger character, like more of a character, and she definitely
has like she has, she's really proficient with weapons.

She's really to show up Mario a lot.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
But ultimately it does boil down to He's trying to
Bowser's trying to marry her. And I was watching this
and it's not like that's new at all, because that
is like the game, that is exactly the plot we
talked about it in that episode we did on Princess
Peach lashto Tool that is the plot of one of
the games, is that he like tries to not only
(18:23):
kidnap her, which he does in almost everyone, but he.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
Tries to marry her.
Speaker 2 (18:28):
And it was weird because I was watching this as
an adult and I was like, I can't believe it's
twenty twenty three and I'm watching a movie where marriage
is kind of being used as a weapon, where it's
very much like he's going to control her via marriage
and if she doesn't agree, he's going to kill everyone

she cares about. Obviously, yes, And and it's framed is
very funny and Jack Black is amazing, Like the song
is really good. He's really great actor. He's really funny
in it. But it's like kind of the funny aspect
of Toxic masculinity because he has so many lines that

are funny, but when you think about them, you're like, oh,
this is real messed up. Like he's essentially we're supposed
to laugh because he's this.

Big villain and he's like, oh, I want to have.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
The happy fairy tale wedding, and you're like aha, but
then like, oh no, he's actually like trying to manipulate
this person, who he says is like beautiful and smart
and straw all this stuff into marrying him, and he
thinks that will make him very, very happy.

And he has a.

Line where he's yelling at Mario where he's like I
was finally gonna be happy, which I feel is like
very in cell kind of language when you're like talking
about what you're you know, if only this woman would
give me what I want, I would be happy and
then it would be fine.

But instance she didn't, and now he's resorting to all
this violence.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
And I bet a lot of you listening are like, Eddie,
this was like a cartoon movie for kids, but I
can't turn off my feminist brain. And I was watching
this and I just thought, you know, kids are probably
watching it, loving it, and we're not it's strange to me.
I guess that it's still that was the plot line,

or maybe not strange, but not something I'm comforted by, right.

I mean, essentially we were. It does feel like a
step back when for so long we've been like, oh, yay,
we finally have a superhero or heroes that are women
who can do their own thing. But then we talked
about Marvel like yay women, Oh no, women are bad.
Apparently Still it gets the push back and forth of
like you're kind of doing it, but you're doing the
minimal and doing it and then you're doing it in

a way that's just not really well done. So is
it more now?

I saw an article today we need to come back
to but it was like Marvel, you got to stop
fridging your women. But yeah, I mean essentially because like
they they did, like I said, they made her stronger,
they made her more bad, but it felt very much
like they knew people were gonna be like mad about it,
so like no, no, no, no, she's strong. See, can

she can hold her own she can do all this
stuff with weapons all and whatever.

But then they were like still.

Again, I kind of go back to the mad Max,
the new version with Charlie's their own, but like everybody
was so mad because it was like feminist because she
was the one that was driving the truck and there's
was women and all these things. But I'm like, but
still in the end, it was the Max dude who
had to sacrifice himself to save them all. He was
still the lead with this Charlie's character just staring in

anguish half the time. Like that was and I'm like,
it was a good movie. I wanted to support it
just because everybody, all the men were mad. I'm like,
this is the movie that you're mad at? Like this
is this one? Like if all the movies should be
mad at, it's say something like kill Bill, which the
antagonist is a woman that's killing everyone, including the teacher,

the main hero guy, and somehow y'all are okay with this,
like because it was made by a dude who kind
of actively hates women. I don't know, Like I'm not sure,
but the whole stance is like it's not as feminist
as you think it is, but you're mad because it's
implying they could be.

Yeah, that's the interesting thing because we've talked about that
a lot, because I feel like there's this thing especially
in like traditionally perceived as masculine spieces, so video games
is a huge one. And in fact, there was an
article did you see this Smith that there's an article
that came out the other day that said more women

play video games? And it got like raaks with the
cools by men who are like, that's some pop that's impossible.
It was just like a It was just a straight
up like this is the survey found and they were.

Like, oh, yes, yes, So this is still like a
huge deal in the video game world.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
And I feel like in a lot of those cases
and a lot of those spaces, it's you can have
your women, you can have your like female character be
a little bit stronger, but only to a point, only
until she's still sexualized, only like she still has to
fit in our like masculine gaze.
Speaker 1 (23:41):
And the fact that this was like.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
A wedding storyline used to entrap her as even though
she's like quote, you know, more bad, it feels very
much like she's still being seen.

The Maria honestly gay because I played it for a
split second and then my partner enjoyed it way more
because I got to a point I'm like, I'm gonna
die all the time, so I quit now. Is the
plot point to rescue the princess?
Speaker 1 (24:12):
Oh, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (24:14):
I think it is.
Speaker 1 (24:17):
Is that the one?
Speaker 2 (24:18):
So there is one game where the exact plot point
is that Bowser's in like a white wedding suit.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
He's got a top.

Yeah, I think that's I think I remember, Like, this
sounds really familiar. And I've never watched this movie. I've
never watched the previews. I know nothing about it. I
knew that Chris Pratt was gonna be the voice. I
was like, why, it doesn't even make sense. It's not sense.
So also to say that I have no interest, but
I feel like I think the Odyssey is the one

where the dude's like, I got I'm gonna marry her
and keeps kidnapping her and then he sends a Tinchman
to fight Mario in different scenarios, which I always die.
I always die. This is why I hate these games.
Been on the switch, still angry, It's okay, I'm okay.
But the plum point is that he has to get her,
(25:07):
him and Hattie whatever the name of the hat is. Yes,
that's how you can be a co op and I'm
still bad at it, but I'm trying to remember I
think that's the whole plot point. And I'm like, that's
a newer game and it's one of the most popular
games out there. The fact that it is a newer game,
I guess you have to have some kind of ultimate goal,
(25:29):
but it seems odd that this is the ultimate goal,
the marriage line, because I don't feel like the Super
Mario three that was the intent. It was just to
help her to find her right right.
Speaker 2 (25:38):
A lot of them are just She's like, not in
your castle, you have to find her.
Speaker 1 (25:43):
And I will say.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
Maybe not in defensive but to clarify in the movie,
she does she agrees to the marriage because she's trying
to protect her people, but she does have a plan
to get out of it, and does she does attack
Bowser and he was like, well, then we're wreaking up
(26:07):
right now. So yeah, I'm working on my voices of
good yeah, thank you.

One of those things where I feel like they did.
They knew that our conversation has changed since the games
came out. People wouldn't be happy if that was the
whole plot point, so they kept trying to give you
like no seapeaches really strong and she was, but it
still felt like just a little bit and she still
ended up. Yeah, Mario had to save her and Bowser,
(26:52):
perhaps not surprisingly, did not take rejection really well. And
so there's like this whole scene that I was just
a iagining kids watching of this guy being like, you've
ruined everything, you made me so sell like all this stuff.
And then yeah, Mario and Luigi's ate the day it
really you know, like I said, it was nostalgic. I

liked that part of it that I just thought, I
just because it's really really popular. That movie has been
the number one on like all renting platforms since it
became available to rent.

Really yeah, he was the only person that I know
that's watched that movie.

Wow.

I don't know a lot of people though.

Well, but I mean I imagine a lot of its kids,
a lot of its kids watching it, and it it just.

It is a step forward in some ways, but in

I was like, but you're still you still want this
way Mario, she doesn't. It's definitely gonna be a sequel
because at the end, like Yoshi, who wasn't in it,
comes out of his like egg, So it kind of
been down a like eighties like whoo oh wait, yo,

she's coming on and the next one. Yeah, I would
assume they made enough money. I'm sure they're gonna make
another one. But yeah, I just you know what if
you if you listeners haven't watched it, you want to.
I just I would love to hear your thoughts about it,
because literally I was watching it, I was like, am I.

But there is a Mario Land in Universal now, so
I will be going.

It has a Mario Kart ride.

I've heard interesting things about it, mostly that it's just
like not complete, nothing bad.

But it's finished, like you're not going to die on it,

don't know, shooting off red shells and stuff.
