Today we are talking all things flowerswith Ocean Breeze Florals in Newport Beach.
Ocean Breeze Floras in Newport Beach isa family owned and run flower shop where
they do flowers for all occasions. To help take us into the world of
(01:36):
flowers, I welcome mister Tony Navarro, the owner of Ocean Breeze Flores in
Newport Beach. Mister Navarro, howare you doing today? Good, sir,
I'm doing good. Thank you forhaving me. How are you doing?
After quite possibly one of the busiestweeks being a florist, with both
Mother's Day, prom and graduation alltaking place in the same week, it
(01:57):
hit us. It hit us likea brick wall. It was very,
very busy for my wife and I. We were pulling eighteen twenty hour days
pretty much all week and it wasvery intense with graduations, proms, Mother's
Day weekend, some other events thatwe had planned for local businesses that we
(02:20):
that we cater to during the week. So you know, we couldn't we
couldn't forget anybody throughout the week.So it's been it's been a week of
catching up this week. Take meback to the beginning. What got your
family into being floors opening up afloral shop in the beginning. Were you
always into flowers or did you havea whole other career and just say,
(02:42):
you know what, flowers is goingto be the way we're going to go.
So my wife and I during duringCOVID, I was laid off.
I was a general manager for afamily fund center and obviously they closed during
COVID, so I wasn't working.I was liked in unemployment, like so
many Americans were at the time.My wife started working at a flower shop
(03:07):
for somebody else. She had beendoing that off and on for about fifteen
years or so. And I wasjust browsing around on the Internet and I
saw that there was a flower shopfor sale about thirty miles away from where
we lived. And I just sendhim a message and I said, Hey,
I'm interested in your flower shop. Can I buy it from you?
(03:27):
In payments? You know, Iwasn't working. I was only collecting unemployment.
I had no flowershop experience. Andthe gentleman, he just wanted out.
It was too much for him.He didn't have any flowership experience either.
His wife was the one that wasdoing everything at the flower shop,
but she had an accident then shecouldn't work at the flower shop anymore.
(03:50):
So it was a blessing and disguisefor us. We took over during COVID,
and we were comeding every day foran hour due to southern California traffic
back and forth from our home. And wow, you know, the one
thing led to another, you know, I stuck it out with the flower
shop, and my wife and Ihave been working together since twenty twenty one
(04:14):
and we've grown from that little locationin Riverside to this location in Newport Beach.
That is an amazing story and sucha story of perseverance. I mean,
so many Americans had to find away where there was no way when
COVID hit and for you, withno floral experience to speak of, coming
(04:36):
in taking over a shot because yousaw an opportunity, that right there is
the American experience in a nutshell.Tell me since opening up Ocean Breeze Florals
in Newport Beach, what has beenyour greatest success thus far? I would
say, you know, being ableto put food on the table for my
(04:58):
children, being able to work withmy wife on a daily basis. You
know, we've been able to getto know each other more than just husband
and wife, you know, andnow we were business partners. We make
decisions for the business together. We'reable to feed our family, We're able
to put our son through collegey he'sa freshman at the University of Pittsburgh.
(05:20):
And you know, it's been ablessing in disguise for us. So you
know, when we took this opportunityback in twenty twenty one, we could
have never imagine or pictured we'd behere now. And tell me, looking
at how many floral shops there arein southern California, and then you add
(05:42):
in some of these corner pop upflores who just will come and put together
a bouquet, you know, ata gas station corner. What does ocean
breeze floral's in Newport Beach do tostay a cut above the competition. So
for us, we're blessed to bein a very nice location where people love
(06:02):
flowers, and they love flowers forall locations. So when it's not Valentine's
Day week or Mother's Day week,we're blessed to have graduations. We're blessed
to work with businesses in the areathat that have events throughout the year where
we are considered for for the flowersfor those events. My wife has classes.
(06:26):
She teaches, you know, sometimespeople want to learn to be a
floorish. She teaches that throughout theyear when you know, we always have
to be thinking of ways to togrow and ways to to stay busy.
Otherwise, you know, during thesummer of people vacation, there's no more
graduations. There's no more big events, you know, unless it's a wedding
(06:47):
or baby shower or something like that. But you always have to think of
ways to grow and and you know, think outside the box to bring income
and to you know, to stayrelevant. And in this type of market,
it's doggy dog world out here, but you know, you got to
stay a step above. We couldhave been like many other floors this week
(07:08):
that took the week off and hadn'tworked. But my wife and I have
been grinding. She just finished herfiftieth caresage and butnir combo for the day,
and you know, it's it's NonStopwork every day. I absolutely thank
you for sharing that because that issome of the most sage advice you could
(07:29):
give, especially for an aspiring smallbusiness owner, whether it's in flowers or
if it's in selling bakeries. Youhave to stay a cut above the rest,
and you have to make sure youare doing all you can to keep
your doors open. And mister Navarro, you are doing just that. I
(07:51):
salute you and Ocean Breeze Flowers.Thank you for making Southern California that much
more a beautiful old If anyone wantsto find out more about Ocean Breeze Florals

taking a look at some really reallycool things we can get into Memorial Day
weekend. First and foremost, it'slooking like Memorial Day travel this year is
(09:41):
going to exceed last year's numbers. Why, because we're that much further out
of the pandemic. So this iskind of adjacent to know DA, It's
like, Yeah, travel is goingto be crazy this Memorial Day weekend because
we are out there, all right, We are really and truly out there
(10:03):
nationwide. Triple As predicting forty threepoint eight million Americans will travel this holiday
weekend, with a four point oneincrease from twenty twenty three. And yeah,
again that makes absolute total, perfectsense. Best and worst times to
(10:24):
drive if you're planning on getting onthe road this Memorial Day weekend. According
to i in Rix, which isa provider of transportation data and insights,
they say that afternoons and evenings onThursday May twenty third and Friday May twenty
(10:48):
fourth are going to be the busiesttimes to travel locally. The busiest stretch
of freeways that this coming weekend isexpected to be the north from a Los
Angeles to Bakersfield on the afternoon andevening of Thursday May twenty, May twenty
third, when travel time will increaseby eighty four percent over the normal ninety
(11:13):
minute trip, taking it to aboutthree plus hours. I RIX projections indicate
that the best time to travel bycar this coming Thursday. On Friday is
before eleven am or after eight pm, or on Sunday before one pm and
(11:35):
on Monday after seven pm. Interesting. So if you are going by car,
there you go. Some of thetop destinations this Memorial Day weekend.
Where are you going, super producerKayla, I am going home to New
Jersey to spend time with my family. Okay, okay, New Jersey.
(11:56):
Let's see if New Jersey is onthe list. According Yes, according to
Triple A, New Jersey. Noa kid, a kid, you're faced
off your face? That was nowif I could have stopped the picture real
quick. I am Las Vegas,San Diego, the Grand Canyon, Hawaii,
(12:20):
and for some reason another Seattle andAlaska, Jersey. Yeah no,
but that's if you're going on acruise. Yes, that that's if you're
going on a cruise. That's notjust traveling period. Locally, travelers will
pay about fifty cents more per gallonthis time of year, so filling up
(12:41):
even though I did see somewhere thatgas prices aren't going to be too high
this Memorial Day weekend. Uh.Some trip some trips from some tips from
the Auto Club while traveling this MemorialDay weekend and beyond. Really inspect your
vehicle, tie battery and fluid levelsbefore getting on a long road trip.
(13:05):
Make sure you pack food, water, and an emergency kit, first aid
kit and mobile phone charger in caseyou break down. Reserve airport parking ahead
of time to save you on departureday. Ah, that's a good one.
That is a go one. Getto airports at least two hours before
domestic flights and three hours before internationalflights. Although who's flying out internationally for
(13:30):
Memorial Day weekend? It just seemslike go on this not Memorial Day week
It's Memorial Day week in. Noneed to go international with it. Sign
up for TSA pre check or clearto speed up the security process absolutely absolute,
superproducer klub. Make sure you dothat. Make sure you don't show
up like I'm ready to check in. No sign up ahead of time?
Okay? There you go. Downloadyour airlines app and use flyaway or flight
(13:58):
aware to track your air graft theday of departure. Okay, so make
sure you download that super producer cap. Want to make sure that you are
safe and that you are responsible onyour journey. Avoid checking a bag if
possible, I always do. Arethere you go. Carry on luggage allows
you to be more flexible in theday of the event of delayed cancelations.
You know, if you check abag, then you got to be like,
I can't leave the airport. Igotta get my bag, And they're
(14:20):
like, well, your bag's alreadyon the plane and the plane is delayed,
so you can wait here for No. I gotta worry about all that
if you can. If you canbook your summer travel now, do not
wait book your summer travel now.High demand and reduce schedules will mean fewer
(14:41):
options as you get closer to thesummer. Of course, work with a
trusted auto club. No, no, no, Triple A. No,
you didn't pay for these tips.I'm not giving you a plug like that.
But that right there is some ofthe tips at least that Triple A
is offering. Uh. And itdoes seem yes that this Memorial Day weekend,
(15:05):
gas prices will be down just alittle bit. Yeah, Uh,
gas prices will be down closer tofour dollars a gallon. That seems that
seems impossible, though it really doesseem impossible, especially because I just put
(15:26):
gas in my card down and itwas like five dollars, So I can't
see it going down a whole dollarby Memorial Day weekend. No, no,
no, no, Well, let'sjust you know, let's let's just
hope for it, because I've beenlooking for four dollar gas for a long
time now, so if it's comingthis upcoming weekend, I'd be Yeah,
I just think this. I don'tbelieve. Yeah, no, I definitely
(15:50):
do not see. I know thatI've been seeing little decreases here and there,
but we're still we're still gonna beuh getting robbed at the gas pump.
So if you are traveling though, please please, please, please please,
I beg of you travel safely.Do not, I repeat, do
not drink and drive this coming MemorialDay weekend, and make sure the most
(16:17):
important thing on your mind is gettingthere, not getting there quickly. Make
sure you're traveling safely this Memorial Dayweekend, because we enjoy having you here
with us, not just here listeningto the show, but here on this
here planet Earth. This is IAM six forty Live Everywhere on the iHeartRadio

AM six forty KFI AM six fortylive everywhere on the iHeart Radio app in
New Hall Mount, Washington. Shuga loaf and all right wood, this
(17:06):
is soul cal Saturday. I'm yourhost Twaala Shark taking a look at some
things to do with your baby asthe sun starts coming out here in sol
Cow, even though yes, Iknow we're gonna get a gray days,
a little drizzle here, and Ithink maybe through this weekend, but then
you know, come Monday, sunis here again. The sun it shall
(17:26):
come out tomorrow. And these aresome things you can look to do with
your baby. Water play And thefirst on this list is a no no.
The beach. Why in God's namewould you take your baby to the
beach? There is literally and Iswear I didn't add it to the list
(17:51):
of stories today because I said tomyself, it's just gonna disgust me mentally.
There is a bacteria warning to stayout of a few lakes and river
beaches and stuff out here. Lastweek there was a massive sewage overflow.
So I'm telling you this, youput your baby in the water. I
(18:11):
go to any beach here in Socaoand I see you with a baby in
the water. I am calling ChildProtective Services because you are endangering the life
of your baby putting your child inthis poop filled water. Do not do
it. No, And I don'tcare which beach you're talking about. I
do not care. No, no, no, Our beach is fine.
(18:32):
No. No. Now, ifyou have a pool or are near a
really really nice public pool, there'sa park right here in Bourbank, not
far from where we are here atthe studio. That's a very nice public
pool, very very nice, beautiful. Start getting your baby into the water.
(18:52):
Start getting your baby into swimming thingslike that, just period, because
if they start now, they willjust become little murd people by the time
they get to be adults and theywill love the water. Just hopefully they
don't love the beach. You cango outdoors, that's a given. Griffith
(19:14):
Park. Sure, sure, GriffithPark. I believe there is the memorial
for p. Twenty two. Youcan take your baby to the P.
Twenty two memorial to honor our legendaryMountain Cat. If you're into zoo's,
you can take your baby to theLa Zoo. Me myself, I'm just
not into the idea of caged animalsand also recently two elephants dying at the
(19:41):
La Zoo. No, are yousuggestion we do these things? Or are
you just trying to list the thingsyou hate and find dirty? I just
I'm trying to find things on thislist that you can't do. Like okay,
like the farmer's market. Oh,the farmer's market's cool. Take to
go there and get some some vege, and they have wonderful things for babies
to like. Try out at thefarmer's market. That's not that fun,
(20:03):
it's not okay, So scratch that. Scratch that. Take your baby to
the stables, Oh, that's fun. They take your baby to ride the
hell, start them early, startearly, okay, you watch your child
to die getting kicked by a horse. Sure. A walk in the garden,
(20:26):
yeah, I remember when when myson was were a little I think
I can't remember which garden we wentto, but he got stung by a
bee and that's how we knew hewasn't allergic to be so, I mean,
I guess if you want to trythat underword farms though, underwood farms,
that is a great, great, great place to take your baby,
go and get some farm fresh fruitsand veggies. Underward Farms is fantastic.
(20:52):
There's plenty of kids museums kids Spacein Pasadena right over there near the Rose
Bowl in the Brooks out of here. Kids Space is quite possibly the most
magical place to take your child, full of wonderful of learning opportunities. I
still love taking my kids to kidsSpace in Pasadena all the time. And
(21:17):
it does go to a certain age, it really does. At first.
I remember when my son turned maybelike eleven twelve, he was like,
nah, I'm cool, I'm coolon seeing the butterflies get released. But
my daughter she still liked it,you know, but then she gro out
of it. Now I mentioned Kid'sSpace, they're like, please, Daddy,
no. And then the California ScienceCenter excellent place to take your baby,
(21:40):
so much for them to just walkaround wide eyed and just explore.
Libraries. I don't know why librariesare on the list, Like why would
you take your baby to the library? Okay, yeah, but there are
amazing books at the library, believefor free, so you could just sit
there, read them interactive book andthey'll learn and grow. And there is
(22:03):
a in the Bourbon Library. There'sactually a children's museum there. Wow,
really, yeah, there's that atschool. I used to take my kids
to the Children's Museum. Uh hairburmak actually when when uh the mo Kelly
Show was just on on Saturday Sunday, And like sometimes when the kids with
me during the weekend before coming inbecause they were on the night, you
know, I take them over thereand they run around in the library.
But still you know, the firsttime you hear sh yeah, oh talk
(22:27):
about going postal at the library?Whoa, because your kids are getting told
to shush. Not playgrounds. Playgroundsare always a good time, that's always
a good place to take your baby, except like for me, like if
your child was to come over tomy child and try to put sand in
my child's hair, like I sawthat happen, I'm going to threaten you
(22:49):
and your baby and anyone else withyou, because why are you putting sand?
Why are you sitting there like ohthat's so cute. My children's hair
is not conducive to sand being putin it. Back in the day,
it was just not conducive to beingin the hair. So there were several
times where where me and other fathersat the park we would have words like
if you don't get your child awayfrom mine. With that sand in their
(23:12):
hair, I'm gonna accidentally bump yourchild over the playground at the playground,
So maybe not the playground. Musicclasses, Music classes fantastic. Get your
child into music early. If youcan find a wonderful, you know,
music class, that's it. Theysay, mommy movies, This list has
(23:33):
mommy movies, But what about daddymovies. I sedi love taking my kids
to the movies, like especially thereare certain theaters that have kid friendly showings,
like real early showings of like oldschool of films. When I say
old school, I mean they'll havelike Who Framed Roger Rabbin and like,
you know, some classic stuff likethat, some of the Disney Goofy the
(23:55):
goofy movie type stuff to help thatstuff. So movies are always fun,
but really and truly just a goodold time in the backyard. You put
that slipping slide on the lawn, make sure you clear on any rocks or
pebbles so your kid don't get jackedup. Slide along, get a nice
little home depot grill you go.It's a party. That is a party
in the backyard. Uh even createa little backyard beach where you can have
(24:18):
a little inflatable pool, some somebeach balls, a blanket, you can
have your own thing. Doesn't haveto have that's that's just a pool,
backyard, beach. It's about creatingthe theme. You can do umbrellas.
You know, you could play likehave your stereo planing ocean sound, the
(24:40):
ocean sounds of it. I understandthis. For babies, I'm getting the
picture. Yeah, that makes sense, and it's clean. Yeah there's no
pooping. Oh but if your kidgets in the pool, your baby and
they might just go. So Idon't know. I am sorry for raining
on this list of things to dowith your baby. I thought on the
surface, I said, so thisis a great title, this, this
is a lot of fun. Butit seems that this is full of a
(25:03):
lot of things that are just questionableto do with your child. I don't
know, but still I will seea super producer Kayla can put that on
the website so you can check itout for yourself. This is KFI AM
six forty Live Everywhere on the iHeartRadioapp. You're listening to Soul cal Saturday
with Tawala Sharp on demand from KFIAM six forty KFI AM six forty live
(25:41):
everywhere on the iHeartRadio app and Monrovia, Losnsitos, Bloomington and Mecca, Mecca,
Southern California. Yes, right inthe ie. Yes, I love
that, and the hike everything isin the I love it. I love
(26:03):
that, I as much as Ilove just small businesses here in Southern California,
just business and commerce period. Irecognize, full well, full of
I was about to curse full wellthat the small businesses are absolutely the backbone
of Southern California. From restaurants tobarbershops, to different boutique clothing stores,
(26:32):
comic shops, tax preparers, jewelrystores. You know the corner store,
and I mean the corners. Youknow supermarket that's not a route sore avons
or pavilions or something. You allkeep this state going. And it seems
that now there is an app thatallows businesses to pay customers to share their
(26:59):
posts, yes, and to sharefavorable posts. Now there is this app,
it is called thumbs Up thum zup that allows businesses to bypass the
multi billion dollar online ad market bypaying customers directly to post about their products.
(27:21):
This launched back in twenty twenty two, but up. Until recently,
only residents in West LA could usethe platform, which is weird and according
to the individual's at thumbs up quote, we are excited to introduce thumbs Up
to the Hollywood community, expanding ourgeographical reach and enhancing the way individuals interact
(27:45):
with and support local businesses through socialmedia end quote. That is according to
Robert Steel, who is the CEOand founder of thumbs Up. And here's
how the app works. Businesses cansign up for an advertising campaign and customers
who download the app can then visitthe business. Once users post a photo
(28:07):
through the app, which will alsoautomatically may be posted to their Instagram account,
they get paid by the company viapaypaler Venmo. Payments for posting can
be veried, you know, bythe business. Local businesses right now like
Hollowed Ground in LA and The Bellissimoin Venice and other few other companies have
(28:30):
already utilized thumbs Up and they're findingsome great success in it. Other local
businesses like a Tacoma at A,cama Ata c a m A Home Center,
Grow Kid Grow, and Morning Kitchenhave also partnered with the app.
(28:51):
And I think this is awesome.I think that coming up with an app
as a way to not only increaseengagement by those who are heavy on social
media, but to also pay individualsbecause one thing I absolutely despise, like
if I go to Target or Walmart, ring you these big box stores,
and they send me an email saying, hey, review your trip to this
(29:15):
to this location, And I'm almostlike, are you paying me for my
review? Because me reviewing your locationthat helps you? That helps your business?
You know that, you know youalways say help us, you know,
to grow and make a better business. I'm like, but I'm not
getting paid to do that. Youactually have individuals that work for you to
help you to do that. Soif you're not paying me for my opinion,
if you're not paying me for thismarket research that you're doing, miss
(29:37):
me on that. This company istaking that and saying, you know what,
we can do something with this andwith that. Next week for small
Business Saturday and it because it isMemorial Day weekend, we are going to
go crazy. We are going tohighlight a handful of are already reviewed small
(30:03):
businesses, some of the individuals thathave come on with us, and let's
see who will come on. Itwill be all of them, all of
them all this ever, no,but we have been doing this for almost
(30:26):
half a year now and we havehighlighted some amazing businesses. So we're going
to take next week to highlight someof our favorites. All of them can't
make it or else we would highlightall of them again, but some of
our favorites will be. They'll beSmall Business Extravaganza Extravaganza for more for Memorial
Day weekend. Super Producer, Kayla, you'll be off next weekend, so
(30:48):
that's it's good that we're doing thisextravaganza. Safe travels to you, Thank
you to New Jersey. Thank youfor once again putting together a fantastic show.
A fantastic show. Brother Elmer, thank you for holding it down on
the board. We appreciate you.Fantastic job. Mister Ashley Johnson, I
