KPRC reporter Aaron Wilson joins Next Up to break down the Houston Texans and tight end Dalton Schultz agreeing to a three-year, $36 million contract with $23.5 million fully guaranteed. The Texans were able to finalize the deal before the franchise tag deadline. "There's a good relationship between C.J. Stroud and Dalton," and Schultz is "the third [receiving] option after Nico Collins and Tank Dell," Wilson said. The future of other Texans free agents still remains at large. The Texans are "not close" on a deal for running back Devin Singletary or linebacker Blake Cashman. "They are actively involved in the running back market." The 2024 NFL Draft is approaching, and Wilson says the Texans should lean more towards a "defensive football player" with their No. 23 overall pick.

(00:00):
Aaron Wilson. Good morning to you, sir. Are your Twitter fingers iced,
rested and ready for day two?Yes, I'm ready, all right,
as ready I'm going to get andas active as I think I should
be. It's going to be abusier time than it is this week.
Next week we'll keep up, ofcourse. And yeah, we have the

(00:23):
legal tampering, the tampering other foodalready begun beginning to combine before and then
actual signings other than resigning and rostercuts and restructures and things like that.
So let's start there. Yeah,we'll get very busy. Let's start there.

(00:44):
Dalton Schultz comes back to the Texans. He had been priority number one
for me, Mordan Grenard, MordanRankins more than anybody else. I was
like, look, they better usethe tag if nothing else, to prevent
Schultz from leaving the building. Ultimately, Schultz the sides to come back to
Houston. I see it as awin win deal. What do you see?

(01:04):
Give us some details on how wegot to this point, right,
Well, they always had this shareddesire to continue working together. It wasn't
that hard to work off of thefranchise tag numbers. So they're close to
that in average per year, butit made more sense. The tag is
so restrictive and it doesn't involve bonuses. It's you're making that money, yes,

(01:30):
that high number, but it's undera one year tender. It's paid
out in game checks. So there'sa lot of reasons why players don't like
the franchise tag. With the abilityto have him under contract now for three
years, with how valuable he isto CJ. Stroud, it's just a

(01:51):
very advantageous thing to do. Hebuilt a lot of chemistry. There's a
good relationship between CJ and Dolson,so it made a lot of sense working
together. Is he the most powerfuldrive blocker, No, but he's a
nice receiver. People talk a lotabout who's the third receiver. He is.
He's the third option after Nico Collinsand Tank Dale. Really, whoever

(02:15):
the third wide receiver is is generallythe fourth option. Maybe that changes if
they get someone else, but rightnow, he's the third best receiving option
for the Texans looking downfield, andthey were the seventh rake passing offense.
So you know, if it ain'tbroke, don't fix it. And I
thought what they have as a passinggame is working just fine, it's it's

(02:39):
interesting. We heard Demiko Ryan saya week ago that you know, they're
one of their big priorities is goingto be keeping a lot of their guys,
and as we know, they havea lot of free agents and first
Domino falls with Dalton Schultz. Iknow you're reporting this morning that they're close
on kymy Fairbairn. I would expectprobably that deal gets done soon and who
else of the available free agent tosee you think they could be close on

(03:02):
They have to get to the numberor he can you know, he could
go. They can go either way, you know, they they're in one
of those things where close but it'sgot to it can't be close to the
card. It's got to be aclose and a close situation. So they're
really in a pivotal point in thistalk and it could happen today, or

(03:24):
he could go and see where elseis out there, So it could go
either direction. But yeah, there'soptimism that they can finish, you know,
like anything, nothing's the deal tillit is. Other guys. I
think Chris Boyd will be back, probably a small deal. He's a reserve

(03:44):
corner with the Wister Texas formerly withthe Viking specialis guy, and that's something
that could get done in the nearfuture. Looking at other negotiations, they're
not close on the Blake Cashman dealor a Motor Singletary deal, so you
know they have work to do.There's some interest in Sheldon Rankins. There's

(04:04):
also interested in other defensive line andlike Christian Wilkins and Chris Jones. I
don't necessarily think that Christians leaves theChiefs Wilkins. I've heard there's mutual interests
and we'll see if that much Wintersgrows into something. He's very expensive.
Rankins would be a great idea tobring back. He played very well and

(04:26):
don't be killed soaps really as much. And you know, a Christian Wilkins
kind of contract, different kind ofplayers, similar in age. Actually,
Wilkins is an older, you know, free agent in a way. You
know, he's almost twenty nine.So yeah, it's interesting. I think
they will not probably get into thetop off the ball linebacker market. I've

(04:48):
heard of Patrick Mean being interested inthem and in the Cowboys, but I
don't know if necessarily they would wantto spend that much for an all football
guy. I've heard about us theseal Shay, you're being interested in the
Texans. He was someone that theyhad on their list last year, but
he opted to sign with the Titansunder a one year was reproductive. So
if play cash and leaves, perhapsthat could be a potential replacement. Not

(05:12):
over with Denzel Pairmu. That's somethingthat you could have him. You want
him as a depth piece and occasionalspots starter. I would anticipate them doing
possibly more than one running back.Saquon Barkley, not franchise tag. He's
the Courts, the headliner and he'svery interested. Has been talking with TJ's

(05:32):
travel possibility coming here. But Ithink two backs system scenario the Texans are
expected to explore, So that couldbe motor singletary thing at that done.
It could be preparing him with theDeAndre Swift or Tony Pollard, could be
other backs too, So they areactively involved in the running back market.
Linebacker d tackle the end and westill don't know yet. I still get

(05:57):
anything down with Ronald re Gernnard.Tend to think it's going to be hard
to get that done, but youknow, he can never rule it out.
He wants to come back and they'dlike to have him back ideally,
but what's behind or umber two doornumber three? How much money would he
be leaving on the table? Possibly, you know, could they be outbid?
You know, maybe here's a thresholdthey won't go past. Or a
Jonathan Gernard as good as he is, good guy. That is all that

(06:21):
stuff. So really fluid situation,a ton of moving parts, a lot
of free agents and the money willyou know, eventually they'll allocale out of
it, but you want to savesomething like I've reported down the road for
Nico Collins for an extension for him. So those are things that could be

(06:43):
coming down the line. That's thevoice of Aaron Wilson, our Texans inside
of him on Sports Talk seven ninety. He's definitely in the know around the
league. We appreciate him dropping byhanging out with Gordire and myself here on
next up. Aaron, we'll getyou out of here on this one,
brother, Just you know, aquick observation for the combine, not necessarily
asking you to empty a notebook. However, there were a couple ideas that

(07:06):
came out of the combine based onwhat I've seen. I just want to
get your comment on them. Isit outside the possibility that at twenty three,
the twenty third overall pick, theTexans taken offensive lineman number two.
If that's not an offensive lineman,I'm getting the sense that it will be

(07:27):
an edge defender. What say youabout what you're hearing and what you saw
there in Indianapolis. No on theoffensive line in the first round. Yeah,
I think that's not the scenario. Not the move would be surprised by
that. Just someone great tell tothem. By the way, great offensive
line drafts. For the fact thatPatrick Paul might be there in the second

(07:51):
round of the third round, maybenot necessarily for them, but available to
the league, and he's very talented, I could see them going as rusher
if Chopped Robinson was around, maybethe Darius Robinson from the Zoo. I
could also see them going with acorner. I think it's more likely right
now that where the talent and theneed matchup is a defensive football player,

(08:13):
and there are also linebackers out therelike Edgar and Cooper. Could be some
guys like that that are even availablein the second round. I think Peyton
Wilson probably goes off at some pointabove their pick. They're oshall on the
state linebacker the ram so well,so they're going to have a ton of
options. Twenty three is a prettysweet spot for the Texans to dan,

(08:37):
I would lean defense, all right. We will monitor and see what happens.
As we are fifty days today fromthe NFL Draft in Detroit. I
