(00:00):
Two weeks from tomorrow, Yeah,Texans training camp on it propping. Yeah,
not too long after that. Weget some paths on and I get
a different time, I get adifferent glow. I feel good until I
read some bleep from people over atNFL dot com and a particular writer.
That's all my damn nerves. Let'sgo to the guest line now, friend
(00:21):
of the station, friend of theshow. Well, we talked to him
during draft time, just before andright after as well, you know his
work on NFL dot com. BrotherEric ed Holme, lead draft writer NFL
dot com. Good morning to you, Eric. I like how you lure
me into the Lions, then withthat friend of the program business and then
and then say, all right, nice drawn, let's go. I'm kidding
(00:44):
man, you know I love comingon. What's going on? Everything good?
No, everything is not good becauseI'm reading your bleeping material and we're
gonna start right here. This cameout, I said, Eric, he
had to think about me when hewrote this. All right, So you
do a great job. I reallyappreciate your work, all due respect.
That's real. You know, yougotta get somebody at before you kick him
in the jump, all right,So you have an article up. It's
from last week, though, butI carried it over to this week.
(01:07):
I was out a little bit.Five NFL off season storylines that are overblown
and five that deserve more attention. So I'm like, okay, that's a
good tease. Let me skim thisarticle and see what Eric is talking about
here. Line it I overblown.Uh hunh falcus QB situation. Don't know
what I agree with that one,but okay, Caleb Williams, Yeah,
probably a bit overblown. He's notthat guy, not to me. Bill's
(01:30):
off season. Yeah, they're introuble. Dad. Getting down here the
number four overblown charges need wide receivers, Yeah, they do. Took a
guy in the first round the otheryear that worked out so well. And
then I get down to number fiveoverblown storylines. The Texans as legitimate Super
Bowl contenders. Explain yourself. Yeah, I don't know that they're ready yet.
(01:56):
I think we've obviously seen a franchisealmost completely change its vector in the
last year. I don't want tomake this seem like I'm anti Texans are
all, if anything. Yeah,as I pointed out to you, I
was higher on Stroud than Young comingout I thought Will Anderson was the best
player in the drafts regardless of position. I love the off season moves of
(02:17):
last year. I thought that, you know, it definitely had a I
almost felt felt like them like Ido about the Washington Commanders now, Like
everything they did last offseason excited me, and everything they did during the season
more than backed it up. Icouldn't have predicted what they did last year.
But progress isn't linear in this league, and that that progressive, you
(02:39):
know, one step at a timething. It doesn't always happen. There
are there are steps backward all thetime in the NFL. And you know,
I've even argued this offseason that theTexans are a better team on paper
now than they were one year ago. And that's exactly the direction you want
to go as far as talent, right, you don't want to be going
(03:01):
the wrong direction. But that doesn'tguarantee more wins. And I think the
schedule is going to be, atleast the second half of it, it's
gonna be an issue. And Idon't know that they have as clear a
runway as I think some people feelthey do. This doesn't mean they're not
contenders, This doesn't mean they're notgoing to be competitive, or that they're
(03:22):
not on that super Bowl path.It just means I don't think we're going
to be crowning them champions or evenby the end of the year considering them
major threats to a super Bowl. And that's I'll die on that hill and
you can stab me while I'm bleeding. Trust me, I will. I
value your opinion and I trust yourwork, even though we can have some
(03:44):
healthy debate, as Gordian I do. Gordy's out today, but we do
it all the time. Okay,So let's go through what we would consider
a championship checklist. Stay with mehere, Yeah, competent front office,
general management, hand coaching. Ithink you would give the Texans a check
with the pairing of Dimico and Nickca SiO. Can we check that next,
(04:06):
no question at all, and therest of the staff too. I
mean, I love what I sawfrom Bobby Slowick, and Gross is a
great coordinator, no question, youknow. I mean that part of it
is in great hands. Okay,so let's check that all right? Coming
up next our franchise quarterback check. You would agree with that, Yep,
no question. I love what Isaw from one of the most poised rookies
(04:29):
in years. Okay, when healthyby personnel Laramie, Tonzo Shack, Mason,
Titus Howard and some young guys onthe interior center and on that left
side. But by and large, when healthy, I think you would say
check to that as well. Adequateoffensive line, I think, yeah,
(04:50):
a a reserve check is how Iwould say. I definitely saw progress in
the group. I think there isbetter depth, but you know, we
still have some things to figure outup front. You know, what is
what is Kenyon Green going to endup being? You know, you know,
right, Juice Scruggs and the otherguys. Yeah, no, I
(05:11):
mean I just think that with withthe offensive line, like you know,
there there are about four or fiveelite units and everyone else is below that.
I don't even know if you sayelite these days, it's it's such
a problem round in the league. But or if I very respected units,
and I don't know that I canquite put the Texans in that group yet,
all right, that would probably befair for me, given what you
(05:31):
said about Kenyon Green and what's goingon the whole that left guard and the
young guys that are somewhat upproving JuiceScruggs, Jared Pattison at center. I
do want to ask yourself, we'retalking offensive line, Blake Fish out of
the second round out of Notre Dame, do you see starter potential at some
point in the rookie season for him? A good question, you know,
it's he's a really interesting guy.I don't know that I would have considered
(05:55):
him a second rounder in January, but the more people I talked to is
clear that there was a growing affectionfor him. I mean, before they
played a game at Notre Dame,he was considered the better recruit than Joe
All. I mean that's something tostart with right there. Like talent wise,
I don't think there's any question there'sSome people have kind of whispered that
he needs to play with a littlemore edge. Some people have said,
(06:16):
hey, maybe he's better at guard. You know, it kind of depends
what their vision is for him andhow pro ready he's going to be from
the jump. I don't I don'thave the answers to those questions, but
I think there there's more there thanI realized initially when I started scouting him.
And you know, like I said, if you told me six months
(06:39):
ago he was going to be thatwhat a second round pick. I don't
know that I would have endorsed it, but the more I watched them,
the more interested that I was.All Right, so we've done Hey,
coach, GM, front office check, quarterback, check, offensive line.
Let's just call it even maybe Yeah, yep, I skill position, me
(06:59):
go the Tankdale healthy, Joe mixing, Dalton Schultz check. It doesn't get
much more check than that. Ilike it, I really do. I
I think Brigain Schultz back was important. The move is obviously a fascinating,
you know, risk, and andit's it's got to feel good when a
team like Houston can say, hey, we can we can rob one of
(07:23):
the long time conference powerhouses. Right. For five years, the Bills have
been, you know, a reallytough team and up and coming team,
the kind of team that the Texansare slowly becoming, I think. But
you know that that's a good feeling. That's not to say that Steph doesn't
come with with some questions too, right, and I think in year one
(07:44):
he'll be on his best behavior,so to speak, and and try to
fall line with the team element. But you never know, he's also in
that Antonio Brown stage of his career. It's like could go one of two
ways, like he could be afuture Hall of Famer or things could go
sideways, you know. And Ijust that's hard to know exactly where he
is right now, but he's he'sobviously got number one ability. Eric at
(08:07):
Holm, lead draft Rider NFL dotCom joining us here on next up stan
Fleet flying solo today. All right, so just a couple of defensive pieces,
and I'm going to ask you againthe question we started with past rush
Danil Hunter, Will Anderson Junior,Denico Autry check. It doesn't get much
more check than that. I thinkthat's gonna have to be what drives defense
(08:31):
this year. I think that's gonnahave to be. It's, you know,
it's superpower if you will, andI think it ken you know,
obviously, the question is how muchbetter is that group right there than the
one that had a pretty good playerin Jonathan Gernard. I mean, I
think most people would recognize that, you know, effort, it's finishing ability.
(08:54):
Is it a major major upgrade?Significant? I don't know significant.
No. I think again, Ithink it's a good unit. But I
just that's my question is how muchdid they significantly upgrade on defenses, is
I guess the still lingering issue forme. And let me remind you that
Derek Barnett gets acquired from Philly getsreleased he was a god saying for us
(09:15):
late in the year last year. He's now more of a depth piece,
so you still have him, butnow he becomes your essentially fourth or fifth
rusher as opposed to be in yoursecond or third. So I think that's
a check. Now here's one whereit gets a little dicey for me.
This back in we both know towin in this league, you gotta have
somebody to cover dudes. Derek StingleyJunior win healthy. Check the other three
(09:43):
if you want to include the Nickelfour Petrie, Jimmy Ward, perhaps Rookie
Kamari, last of the slash JeffOkudah, and then Danz mc king the
second at the Nickel. I don'tknow that I can go check on that.
How would you rate that bunch?Yeah, I'm kind of there with
you too, And I guess you'dinclude Bullock as well. I mean,
(10:03):
I don't know what he's gonna doand you want That's where I'm at,
Yeah, in some form, right, And so the depth is getting better,
you know Stingley. You know again, I felt like, you know,
we saw some strides from him lastyear. Ward's got some skins on
the wall. He's certainly a guywho's been in big games and knows what
is expected of, you know,by Deem Jamaco Ryans and company. So
(10:26):
yeah, lasted or wasn't. Idon't think a bad pick at all,
But you know, there's some somelimitation size wise, and there's still some
some holes in his game that Ithink there are questions the need answering anyway.
So yeah, collectively, is ita special unit right now? I
don't know that you can say that. I think again, if if you
(10:46):
feed off the pass rush, youtackle well, and then it kind of
boils down to those those big plays. That's what I think the formula was
last year. Let's let's let's notworry about giving up four hundred yards in
the game. Let's get that keyand over, let's get that red zone
stop. You know, let's let'sstop them on fourth down when they cross
the fifty yard line or whatever itmay be. And you know, it
(11:09):
worked for a half against Baltimore sortof, and then it didn't. And
I guess my question is can theyhave a little bit more stopping power in
general, and can they continue beinga timely clutch defense when when they when
they have to? Those are thoseare steps forward that that turn you from
(11:30):
AFC contender into Super Bowl contender.I think there's a big difference, especially
with you know, maybe maybe thepower isn't quite there widespread in the conference,
but I still think there are enoughteams that will will stand in their
way at least and be you know, the Cincinnatis of the world, and
I think they're gonna bounce back thisyear. I don't think Buffalo is going
(11:54):
away. Why I don't Why doeseverybody believe Cincinnati? Like it's almost like
Cincinnati gets credit for what they didtwo years ago. This Texans team went
into Cincinnati versus Joe Burrow and beatthem. And the game that c J.
Stroud basically stomped. He had twoturnover. I think he had three
turnovers, two picks, almost hadanother one comes to mind. Why won't
(12:15):
people? And then the Buffalo love? Why do y'all love on Buffalo so
much? I love Josh Allen,I really do. I he is is
Yeah, I don't know that you'regonna getna see as much. I mean
I felt like, if you watchDown the Stretch with Buffalo, you know,
(12:37):
Jabe Davis is barely getting the ball, like you know, I don't
think his loss is considered that major. You know, Steph was catching five
six balls for forty fifty yards anda lot of skis. Oh and that
was after the O see change, don't do that to start the season.
He was a monster. Oh yeah, No, I'm just saying from Buffalo's
(12:58):
perspective, this is not a ohDiggs can't play. Okay, you're saying
Buffalo, it wasn't that big ofa loss on Buffalo would already kind of
turned the page a little bit onDiggs and Davis. I mean, I
felt like down the Stretch, likeyou said, new play caller, different
kind of lens on how to attackpeople, less of forcing the ball into
(13:20):
Steph fifteen times a game and moreof hey we have James Cook, we
have some tight ends. We havethis Khalil Shakir kid who can who could
play a little bit. And itwas more of a ball distribution offense towards
the end. And I don't know, so I guess the question is how
long will it take to get themsettled. How is Miami going to withstand
(13:43):
the offseason losses and still be trustto a tongue ball and a big spot
not more than question mark. I'mwith you, man, I here,
believe me, no go back.I swear I watched like four Dolphins games
and I thought, God kind offorgot how amazing they were at times last
(14:05):
year. But it's that lack ofbuildings. Thank you. The postseason came
and all those track guys slowed downwhen they had to go outside versus patting
myhomes up there in Arrowhead. Eric, I wish I could argue with you
some more. Yeah, that's fair, and I think, for really that's
really the next step. When Italk about the Texans, Yeah, they
(14:26):
went into the jungle against Joe Burrow, but they went twice in the M
and T Bank Stadium in the Harborof Baltimore and they came up short both
times. You cannot win in thisleague until you can take your show on
the road and be as competitive againstreal competition. And they have to go
to Arawhead this year. I thinkthey have to go to Green Bay this
year. They have to go toDallas this year. We'll find out what
(14:50):
these twenty four Texans are talking about. Eric at home, everybody. He's
a lead draft writer NFL dot com. I appreciate him dropping by as we're
up against the fourth man. Ihope you enjoy yourself, and I look
forward to argue with you somewhere downthe line. I'm still alive, man,
you know, bloody, but butstill hanging in their mess. Follow
him, won't you appreciate your Ericright? Follow his work, won't you?
(15:13):
He is at Eric Underscore E dH O l M again, lead
draft writer of n f L dotcom.
