if if your team was in it. But I know
that you have, you know, followed college basketball for so long,
So how exciting is March madness for you?

It's weird, you know. I've been on so many different
last year. I just couldn't even bring myself to stomach
just watching even a possession right like, So, I'm excited,
But I'm not going to sit here and say I'm
a genius about everything going on in college hoops.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
That's fine. Hey, I'm not a genius either, but I
still fill out a bracket. I think that you have
at least a little more, a little more knowledge of it.

I love that. There we go. Okay, let's start in
the top left. We got Duke taking on Sienna. Of course,
the big storyline with the Saints is Jerry McNamara is
their coach, but of course it's the number one overall seed.
Duke or you you pulling for an upset or who
you got?
Speaker 2 (01:38):
No? I mean again, I know sixteen's have beaten ones
in the past. I do think that Caleb Foster being
out for Duke la kid, who's a three year player
as a point guard, being out, I do think that
potentially hurts their chance of winning national championship. But I
don't think it hurts them in terms of beating Sienna.
The Blue Devil's moving on.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
There we go, we got Duke, nopeus Duke. Okay, let's
go Ohio State TCU. These eight and nine are always
tough to pick. Who you got there.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
Well, it's interesting, you know, Ohio State kind of stuck
in the tournament. TCU though one of the hotter teams
in the country coming out of the Big Twelve late
in the year. Three of those wins late in the
year were over my own modern Oklhoma State, so I
got a chance to see them. But but Ohio State
they beat us pretty handily. Going back to last year,
I like Ohio State. In this matchup, you have a

ve and senior point guard who's an absolute stud. We
couldn't guard him. I think he's one of the more
underrated players in the country. I'll take the Buckeyes.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
Moving on, there we go, so Duke take it on
Ohio State. But we don't do brackets like that. We're
starting with the round of sixty four. Saint John's Northern Iowa,
the Big East champions who got past Yukon against a
Northern i feel like this is one of the five
to twelves that people like it is.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
And you know, Saint John's has had some weird ones
where they haven't been able to score, and of course
Northern Iowa has Wisconsin borne products. Will Hornsteth of course
played to peer Leon Bond who's there as well. And
this is the Northern team that I think had great
aspirations and kind of struggled in the regular season put
together to an arch madness. But the Johnnys are just

a different level of athleticism defensively and they rebound the
hell out of the basketball. My general premise or premise,
my general thought process is dynamic defensive teams win those
early round games. You get to the higher levels. Occasionally,

if you can't score, you can't move on. Saint John's
dynamic defensively, Saint John's wins the game.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
There we go in Northern Iowa's magical run of being
a six seed make in their conference, making all the
way to the tournament, that comes to an end. Okay,
Kansas against the team that is in the state that
you are currently in right now, cal Baptist, I think,
I think this is their first time in the tournament.
And who you got, Bill Sell from the Jayhawks against
cal Baptist.

Rick Kroy is the head coach of cal Baptist, really
good friend of mine, former junior college coach at Citrus,
and of course he's part of that Randy Bennett family
with Saint Mary's and Rick. He does something really cool.
He brings his team down every summer to Newport Beach
and plays pick up basketball with just the staff and
they get other old husbands like myself. So I know
Rick really well. We also know Kansas well because they

kicked the hell out of us and we played their
opening game of the season. People have gotten no Dom Daniels,
who's stud they have, God, what's the kids name? We
recruited him. He's from Milwaukee. James Jackson, who's great kid.
He was at Northern Arizona for a couple of years.
Good kid, good player. I do like cal Baptists to

be competitive. Uh, but Kansas is so early defensively Floria
badunga is I mean Texas rim meecon Garden one through
five and forrest Aaron Peterson even he plays half the game,
that's that's half a game. You struggle to garden. This
is a bit of a talent and financial mismatch. I'll
take the Jayhawks.

Gosh, can't wait for that round of thirty two matchup
if you're right between Rick Patino and Bill self. But yeah,
the Darren Peterson questions that will definitely loom large. We
got Louisville against South Florida the six and eleven. Now
we know that there are stats and statistics. You know,
there's statistics out there that say that eleven's beat six
is more than fifty percent. I don't know how you
feel about Louisville. And you know this is the first

tournament game for Pat Kelsey as the as the head coach. Right,
so taken on South.

South Florida for the upset. Sure, why not?

I am North Coast State and a couple guys. I
think the big kid Peterson who's from Wisconsin. They got
they got a couple of guards that we recruited. They
did a great job in terms of their evals. So
a lot of respect for THEE in their program. But yeah,
I think Sparty's a bit too much for him.

There we go, We're going Sparty there, UCLA, UCS who
you got seven ten?

Well, mister stand on business. Obviously UCF's power forward. We
saw Jamichael's stillwell. We still have nightmares for playing against him,
who's at Milwaukee last year. They also have folks who
was at Milwaukee. Everybody feel like UW Milwaukee heavier light
or whatever. But I UCLA's elite in their backcourt. I

don't know if Tyler Bill is gonna play, but I
do think U c l A wins his game. That's
a Eric Dailey's a stud kid. He was at Oklahoma
State when I helped out there. Ruins will win the game.

I have a friend that does games for the Clippers,
Carla Jimenez, and he stands by medicine ball. That is

let's go to the South Region Florida taking on whoever

Clemson's got some injuries. Iowa, obviously, Ben McCollums teams going
back historically have been great in the tournament, you know,
in the Division two tournament. Good last year with Drake.
I love Iowa, but in this game, I don't think
they got out athleted, so I'll think Iowa over Clemson.

Well, there we go. I think that is that both
not know you did take a to Ohio State. Okay,
Vandermilt McNeice. If we remember McNeice, they were the upset
team last year that everyone picked, right or was it
a few years ago? Either way, now they're going up
against But here's the thing.

Here's the thing. It wasn't really an upset because mcneise
had more money than whoever they were playing. Like mcnisse's
last year when we'll wad it was a very well
funded program this year not. I mean they're still well funded, okay,
but I'm I'm not bandy. Really well coached, spread you out,

and they got some cash there too. Byington does an
amazing job as a coach, really tremendous offensive coach. I
know they struggled late in SEC play and then of
course they go all the way in the SEC to
the SEC championship game. I like and Andy by a
good amount. I think Gosh, mcnee's a little bit on
reputation because of last year.

Yeah, and part of the reputation is that guy that
carries the big speaker, Amir Aura Khan. He's back from
NC State. So yeah, okay, well his run comes to
end and maybe he'll go to a different school like
you did. With NC State with Will Wade. Okay, Nebraska
take it on Troy in the four thirteen.

You know, Nebraska obviously has never won an NCAA tournament game.
Think about that ever one NCAA tournament game. But you
know Rick mouse Like he played for Wartle like in
Wardle's first year at Bradley. He's so old because he
missed last year with injury. I like Nebraska. I think
this is finally the year that the Huskers win NCAA

Carolina take it on VCU. There's a lot been made
about UNC and not having their best player. Do you
see VCU pulling off? I mean it might not even
be an upset because North Carolina doesn't have him. Yeah,

I like VCU in this matchup Phil Martelly junior. VCU
obviously not the fundy of North Carolina. But when you
take away a kid who could be the number one
pick in the NBA draft, probably top five pick in
the NBA draft, they just haven't looked the same. I
know Seth Trimbles, this is his last kind of go around.
He's had a tremendous other Wisconsin kid, right, but I'm
gonna I'm gonna take VCU for the upset.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
Here there we go, and I don't know if you saw,
but the whole Caleb Wilson thing. He was named second
team All American, which means he is eligible to have
his name in the rafters, which I'm fairly sure they're
going to do, which is interesting, weird. Okay, so VC,
you're taking the eleven over the sixth Illinois battling penn
were going Ivy League.

No. I love Franz, my guy, that's who signed me
a Notre Dame. He's got TJ. Power who had forty
four in the iv League championship game. But Illinois is
they're the best team in FOBA playing in the NCAA
tournament because they have they have so many foreign born players.

That's very true. And you just brought up an awful
fact for the Yale Bulldogs who had to watch that shot.
Going to give that guy forty and then he finished
with forty four in that win in the Ivy League championship. Okay,
so you're going with Illinois, Saint Mary's, Texas A and
M seventy ten.

I mean, this is the battle styles, right, Texas A
and M top five in pace. Saint Mary's the slowest
pace in the NCAA tournament. Right. It is traditionally easier
to slow a game down, that is, to speed it up.
I think they're more difficult in the second game than
they are the first game. Remember, because you only have
like a day of repair for a completely different style.
I think Randy Bennet, I mean you look, Todd Golden
(12:43):
was his assistant, played for him. His family continues to spread, right,
his assistants are all over. Randy's is as good a
coach that I've ever seen. That's That's not to take
away from Bucky Ball, but I like Saint Mary's. Easier
to slow it down there is to speed it up.
I think the Gales will find a way to dominate tempo,
get the ball in and make Texas A and M uncomfortable.

I do think that this is a game neither team,
you know, the Darling Kid has become kind of the
point guard for Saint John's. Neither team is great in
terms of point true point guard play. I really think

offensive team known for their defense, still very good defensively,
elite offense. I do think that, you know, Illinois, when
they get to Sweet sixteen playing that five out, they
don't they they play more in ISOs than we do.
That we play more with cuts, and I think that
I just don't think there's the number of mismatches at
that level. I'm gonna I think the line.

out for Duke la kid, who's a three year player
as a point guard, being out, I do think that
potentially hurts their chance of winning national championship. But I

Well, it's interesting, you know, Ohio State kind of stuck
in the tournament. TCU though one of the hotter teams
in the country coming out of the Big Twelve late
in the year. Three of those wins late in the
year were over my own modern Oklhoma State, so I
got a chance to see them. But but Ohio State
they beat us pretty handily. Going back to last year,
I like Ohio State. In this matchup, you have a

ve and senior point guard who's an absolute stud. We
couldn't guard him. I think he's one of the more
underrated players in the country. I'll take the Buckeyes.

Moving on, there we go, so Duke take it on
Ohio State. But we don't do brackets like that. We're
starting with the round of sixty four. Saint John's Northern Iowa,
the Big East champions who got past Yukon against a
Northern i feel like this is one of the five
to twelves that people like it is.

And you know, Saint John's has had some weird ones
where they haven't been able to score, and of course
Northern Iowa has Wisconsin borne products. Will Hornsteth of course
played to peer Leon Bond who's there as well. And
this is the Northern team that I think had great
aspirations and kind of struggled in the regular season put
together to an arch madness. But the Johnnys are just

a different level of athleticism defensively and they rebound the
hell out of the basketball. My general premise or premise,
my general thought process is dynamic defensive teams win those
early round games. You get to the higher levels. Occasionally,

if you can't score, you can't move on. Saint John's
dynamic defensively, Saint John's wins the game.

There we go in Northern Iowa's magical run of being
a six seed make in their conference, making all the
way to the tournament, that comes to an end. Okay,

you are currently in right now, cal Baptist, I think,

Rick Kroy is the head coach of cal Baptist, really
good friend of mine, former junior college coach at Citrus,

He brings his team down every summer to Newport Beach
and plays pick up basketball with just the staff and
they get other old husbands like myself. So I know
Rick really well. We also know Kansas well because they

opening game of the season. People have gotten no Dom Daniels,
who's stud they have, God, what's the kids name? We
recruited him. He's from Milwaukee. James Jackson, who's great kid.
He was at Northern Arizona for a couple of years.

amazing job as a coach, really tremendous offensive coach. I
know they struggled late in SEC play and then of
course they go all the way in the SEC to

reputation because of last year.

Yeah, and part of the reputation is that guy that
carries the big speaker, Amir Aura Khan. He's back from

the bracket of the final game. Yeah, how many total
points scored in the championship.

So you got that's one ninety.

we're talking about, and I assume that you have Arizona
winning the whole thing.

I do. I did go you know, Tommy Lloyd, Tommy Lloyd,
I mean, man, his Arizona's come up short so many times,
different coaches, right, last time they won it. My best
friend in basketball, Miles Diamond, was also in Indianapolis nineteen
ninety seven, so we are God, are we that old now?
Thirty nine years ago? But the Cats will win again,

where they've won last time.

And that's I think that would be the first time
since that year that a team, not obviously they're no
longer in the past, West West Mississippi would win a
