Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is your twenty four to seven US update.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
The latest views this hour.

Speaker 3 (00:05):
In just four minutes, as many as forty people are
dead after devastating storms pounded parts of the South and
Midwest over the weekend. The majority of those deaths were
reported in Missouri, where officials say at least twelve were
killed Kathy Park with more at.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Least six confirmed fatalities here in the state of Mississippi.
The National Weather Service confirming at least two back to
back tornadoes on Saturday near Magnolia, Mississippi. That's where we
are right now. Behind me, we're told that a woman
was actually hiding in the middle of this home. She
actually found a cubby hole that was her safe space
when the roof completely collapsed. Fortunately she is doing okay.

(00:47):
But the winds in this area, they really kicked out.
They were so destructive. There's debris scattered everywhere.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
President Trump says he thinks there's a very good chance
that the US can bring the war in un Crane
to an end. President told reporters aboard Air Force One
yesterday that a lot of work was done over the weekend,
doing pretty well.

Speaker 4 (01:09):
I think with Russia, we'll see if we have something
to announce maybe by Tuesday. I'll be speaking to President
Putner Tuesday.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Trump also said the US has taken in billions of
dollars in new tariffs so far, but what he calls
the big money is coming April second, when additional tariffs
on certain items, along with reciprocal tariffs go into effect.
A pair of astronauts stranded on the International Space Station

(01:40):
are gearing up to finally return to Earth. Sonny Williams
and Butch Wilmore are about to wrap up an unexpected
nine months stay aboard the ISS due to issues with
their blowing Starliner aircraft. A SpaceX capsule that will be
their right home docked at the ISS over the weekend.
NASA says they're set to begin their journey on Tuesday.

(02:04):
I'm Michael Kassner. Another hot beverage payout. In nineteen ninety two,
a woman in Texas spilled a cup of McDonald's coffee
in her lap and suffered third degree burns. She was
awarded nearly three million dollars, and now Starbucks has been
ordered to pay up in another hot beverage incident. Pree
Tennis with more.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
This latest hot beverage scalding happened in Los Angeles at
a Starbucks. A delivery driver says he was scalded and
suffered permanent disfigurement to his lap area, including his groin
and thighs, when a tray of hot teas he bought
at the drive through collapsed in his lap. Michael Garcia sued,
saying he suffered permanent catastrophic harm. His attorney says stor

(02:44):
surveillance showed the employee failed to properly secure the drink
in the cardboard carrier. It then fell directly into Garcia's lap,
and la jury awarded him fifty million dollars. Starbucks says
they're going to appeal.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
There are some things to keep in mind when deducting
charitable contributions when you're doing your taxes, Kristen Marx reports.

Speaker 5 (03:04):
Mark Stieber, the chief tax officer for Jackson Hewitt Tax Services,
says you can only get a charitable donation if you're
able to itemize your deductions, and that.

Speaker 4 (03:12):
Means you have a larger number of total deductible expenses
than your standard deduction, which everybody gets. So there's a
twofold test. Do you have enough itemized deductions to get
into the club to be able to take all the itemized.

Speaker 5 (03:25):
Deductions, donations must be to a qualified organization, and there
must be records of them.

Speaker 4 (03:30):
Keep up with those records. And again I go back
to the if you're an itemizer with that home, you're
probably automatically in the itemizer club. You've got to keep
up with that record and all the stuff you did
during the year, not just on April fifteenth, because that
really cheats yourself when you hurry up.

Speaker 5 (03:44):
Cash contributions can't be more than sixty percent of your
adjusted gross income and less for non cash donations. As
were determining the value of those non cash gifts.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
There's many apps out there. There's many websites that tell
you this is what these articles of clothing or this television,
or this comput or this video game is worth in
the resell market or the vintage market.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
I'm Michael Kassner
