Speaker 1 (00:06):
Hello there. My name is Unopened care and I'm here
on a mission. A few years ago, I moved to
New York City for a new chapter in my life,
and I decided to do all of the things I
had never done before, to try new experiences and broaden
my horizons to see all that life can be. I
grew up a poor boy in the remote ill station

(00:29):
of Shimla, India. As you may know, I eventually became
an actor in Hollywood then Hollywood, but it has been
a long road to get there, and as any actor
can tell you, you you never really make it. There are
so many ups and downs in a career, in a
single time, in our lives, let alone the whole thing.

(00:50):
So like any good story, my life has been filled
with ups and downs. But it's not my story I'm
concerned with, it's yours. So on this new mission of mine,
I will be sharing some stories from my life, lessons
I've learned unwittingly, and I will bring you other stories
that help us remember the joys in life, the everyday victories,

(01:13):
and the differences we each can make. There's a saying
in Indy that I love coach me. It means anything
can happen, the good, the bad, and the surprising. But
let's focus on the good. So, without further ado, our
first episode. Today's story is about young love, unexpected to

(01:38):
good us and what we can do when we feel
we are doomed. It's also about me, your host an
Opum Care, but mostly it's about making you smile. Welcome
to an Cares. Chapter one, The Kiss. It's so difficult

(02:04):
to describe a place that you've grown up in, and
in most hill stations one can actually feel the romantic atmosphere,
and Shimla was no exception. The screen complete mountain of
China trees and the smell of that place. From Tarad,

(02:29):
we used to see millions of lightning bugs. That was
my first impression of similar. Sometime around eight standards, there
was this girl who came into our family, not family,
I wish she came into her family basically, but she

(02:49):
came into this locality. Her father was an army officer,
and when she arrived in town, it created quite a
stir among the local boys. She was beautiful. I think
she was cute. Now I have different words to describe cuteness.
Nila and just natural beauty and her smile reached her eyes.

(03:09):
All of the boys in the neighborhood fell in love
with her because she was unapproachable, she was mysterious, and
she could speak in English. So my love stories are
not complete without my friend, which just a he girl
who is still today my best friend and every relationship

(03:31):
of mine, even my messenger. He told me the only
way to get her attention is to follow her. Now,
in today's time, that would be an offense, but in
small towns that was the only way, because you just
keep following her. At some point we were bound to talk,
which said, why don't you just tell her I love you?

(03:53):
I said, how can I TA isn't just saying because
unless you communicate to her, she will not know. Otherwise
she's thinking that we're just following her. So after practicing
for one month in English, I love you, I love you,
I said finally to her, excuse me, Hello, lady swete,
Hello hello madam, miss I love you. So she turned

(04:17):
back and she said, really, me too. I thought she
got upset. My English wasn't very good and I didn't
know what me too meant. So I said, Segal, she's
saying me too. He said, yeah, me two means maybe
maybe he is me too in Hindi. Ah. I was overjoyed.

(04:41):
He told me, next time, when you meet her, tell
her I want to kiss you. I said, are you mad?
I will tell her I want to kiss you. She'll
slap me, he said, one kiss has five six laps
no value. Don't worry about it. Take the slaps, so
I said again, started walking behind her. And one day
again I said, hello lady, sweet, Hello, hello Cuti he

(05:03):
who must gives you? She said, all right. On the
day of the annual function of the school, I said, fine,
very good, thank you, thank you, thank you, I said, secal,
she's saying an well day of the school, but annual days.
After eight months, he looked at me with a very
very horrible look, and he said, how many girls have
you kissed so far? I said none? He said, can't

(05:24):
you wait for eight months for a kiss? Go and
practice kissing in the meantime? I said practice how He said,
take a glass and practice on it. You did not
tell me that I should take a steel glass or
a copper glass. Why I started practicing on glass, and
in my enthusiasm sometimes the glass would break and my

(05:45):
lips got card. They would also swell up. I thought,
maybe this is what happens when you kiss. And then
just a few days before the annual function, she came
and told me. She said, listen, I'm wearing a sorry
you were a suit, I said suit. In my hundred
years of family, nobody has won a suit. She again said, listen,

(06:07):
you're wearing a suit because I'm wearing a study. I said, saddle.
She's saying to wear his suit. How is it possible?
He said, if you want to kiss her, you will
have to get a suit made. So that night, we
were all sitting down and my father was about to
have food, my brother was about to have his spotter,
and my mother was pouring them sub garram vegetables in
my father's split. So I said, Papa, Papa Papa, I

(06:32):
want his suit. My father's food came out of his mouth,
my brother's water came out of his ears, and my
mother enstood up putting the vegetable in his split. She
put it on this pajamas fruit. Why do you want
he almost cried. I said, Papa, Papa Papa, because in

(06:53):
our school, this prize distribution and principle has said that
only if you wear a suit, we will give you
a price. My father Bazark in Kashmiria. Is he mad
as he won his suit in his life? Ever that
he's asking you to wear his suit. My mother said,
poor fellow, he is asking for his suit. Why don't
you give him a suit? My brother said, if you
give him a suit, I also wanted so my father,

(07:16):
after a long gap, getting over the shock, he said, okay,
I will give you a suit, but I don't have
the money to give you black shoes. I said, don't worry,
I have petty shoes, my gym shoes. I will polish
them black and I will wear them. So I made
this horrendous blue and white striped suit with brown shoes
polished as black. On the day of the kissing, after

(07:45):
the prize distribution, we were supposed to meet under a bridge,
so me and we just said well, went early in
the morning and broke all the light bulbs of the bridge.
We didn't want any eye witness to our kissing. The
prize distribution day, she came at eight pink sorry, matching
pink lipstick perfume, and I in my blue and white

(08:13):
suit and brown shoes polished as black, sat next to
her silence. We just said was on the bridge because
he was told if somebody comes in, he has to
give me a clue. And the cue was the theme

(08:36):
song of the Good the Band and Ugly. Just near
this bench, under this bridge, there was this girl's house,
but nothing to worry. J had told me everybody sleeps
at it. Thirty silence again, and now we were looking
at each other. I smiled, she's my I started to

(09:01):
lean in for the kiss. Suddenly the lights came up
in her home and through the window her father was
putting his arms up and down doing exercises, and just
as she turned to look, my mouth went into her ears,
and she said, what are you doing? Kiss? Can't make
a concert him. You don't even know how to kiss.
Stupid idiot. When I come, I was trying, she said,

(09:26):
come on, you're so sloppy. Just leave me alone. I said,
can I try once again? She said no, no, no,
my mood is off and she went back. After that,
I kept avoiding her in the school, I didn't see her.
I didn't go to the school for a few days,

(09:47):
and one day she caught hold of me near the school, canting,
and she said, kiss me. I said, without my suit
and matching shoes. She said, don't be stupid, idiot, kiss me,
and she caught hold my collars and she took me
behind the canteen and we kissed. I think it was
a very bad, sloppy kuess. I didn't know, but at

(10:08):
least we officially kissed. Many years later, when I was
in movies, one day I went to Shimla for shooting.
I was shooting her a film called Mark. It never
got released, and my my assistant he came to me
and he said, some madam wants to meet you. I
turned around and I saw this lady, tired, a little frightened,

(10:34):
but wearing pink study matching pink lipstick and perfew. She
was standing with her husband and three children. And I
went closer to her, and I saw a little bit
of panic in her eyes. I fear, actually she had
feared whill I remembered that story of kissing under the bridge.

(11:02):
I greated her husband and three children and they took
a picture with me. She said to me, can I
take a picture alone with you? And then we took
a picture alone, and then she left. She went to
her life for the rest of her life. But I

(11:25):
can still picture that girl and that pink sorry and
Matti mich lipstick, first touch and first kiss. It has
its own magic. I can still feel that I can
still see her eyes. No, not every and is as

(12:00):
lucky as I am to have someone like Vidget in
their life. But either way, you might like to know
about the Secretaries of Juliet. We've all heard of Romeo
and Juliet Shakespeare's glorious Stale of young star cross lovers,
and it is beloved for a reason. The romance, the

(12:24):
warring families, and yes, the heartbreaks. Over the centuries, so
many people have been held wrapped by the story. But
despite how the play ends, I don't know how to
spoil it for you, but it's not a happy ending.
What's funny is that every year fifty thousand letters get

(12:48):
sent to Juliet asking for a romantic advice. M What's
even more remarkable. You want to know that, even though
our lovely Juliet is long dead, she writes each one
of them back. Let me tell you how the whole
business started in the nineties, when officials in the Italian

(13:11):
town of Verona, Juliet's hometown, started getting letters postmarked to
Juliet Capullet now, most of the letters sounded like they
were meant for an advice columnist. Some wondered, how do
I win my crushes attention? Others were much more depressing,
heartbroken people asking for advice on how to handle the
death of his spouse. Not to know what to do

(13:33):
with these letters. The postal workers took the mail to
a monastery where Juliet was said to be buried. But
when a groundskeeper began reading the letters and then started
replying to them, a tradition was born. Today, every single
letter addressed to Juliet is taken to a small office

(13:55):
tucked behind a quaint cobblestoned Allie, just a few blocks
from Juliet's posed home, and they're a handful of volunteers
known as Secretaries of Juliet, write out their replies. They
respond to each and everyone. But the story gets better.

(14:19):
In two thousands fifteen, one of those letters belonged to
a British man named Martin. Happily, like many people who
write to Juliet, Martin had been through a tough time.
When he was a teenager, Martin had been diagnosed with
brain cancer, and while dozens of surgeries helped him remove
the tumor. He was left struggling with chronic problems. He
had trouble speaking. He also had trouble with his memory,

(14:42):
and those things had a real effect on his life.
He had a hard time keeping a study job and
even harder time staying in relationships. Feeling especially heartbroken with
a breakup, Martin bowed his feelings onto the page and
sent the lit to Juliet. Months later, a reply came back,

(15:09):
you are meant to be alive. Immediately, Martin started to
feel better. Curious to learn about the people who had
written the note, Martin began following the Secretaries of Juliet
on Facebook, and then he began chiming in, writing his
thoughts in the comments section. In fact, he became so

(15:31):
well known that the secretaries began asking for help writing
letters from Juliet. Martin learned that the secretaries strive to
give solid love advice in a compassionate, non judgmental tone.
But what really matters is that they write from a
place of experience, whether somebody is madly smitten or heartbroken

(15:52):
or simply lonely. The team of Juliets, all of them
unpaid volunteers, draw from their own lives to write something
genuinely helpful. Martin, the Secretary, is realized at a unique perspective.
He knew what it was like to live and love
with the disability. In fact, his responses was so unique
and thoughtful that the secretaries asked him to become a

(16:14):
permanent Juliet. Today, Martin is the only permanent Secretary of
Juliet from England. Since he's not based in Italy, he
works on email answering questions from the comfort of his home.
But that doesn't mean he takes his job any less seriously.
As he told the BBC, it's my job to help
people remember to open their eyes as well as their hearts,

(16:38):
to follow love, but not into a hole of doom.
Considering how Romeo and Juliet turns out, that feels like
sound advice. You two can volunteer with the Secretaries of Juliet.

(16:58):
They prefer people with background in foreign languages, psychology, sociology,
literature and journalism. And if you want to write your
own love letters to Juliet, you can at this address
Juliet Club, Corso Santa Anastasia, three, Verona, Italy. We will

(17:22):
