John Paulk was my nemesis. I knew in order to
live a rich and fulfilling life, one riot was equal
under the law and could be happy and fulfilled. I
needed to defeat the message that John Paulk was peddling.

I'm John Paulk. For years, I was the poster boy
of the conversion therapy movement, the ex gay who married
an ex lesbian and traveled the world telling my story
of how I changed my sexuality from gay to stray.
I wore the label of X gay with pride. That

was all until well, we'll get to that part.

He's like, you know, a car wreck, and that people
can't keep their eyes off him. He evokes a reaction
he did with me.

I remember it being a major blow to the evangelical
community to see one of their brightest, hottest stars go down.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
John has never been anything that gay, but he really
tried hard not to be. John just seemed like a
different person, willing to do whatever it took. Once upon
a time, I was on sixty Minutes Oprah, the front
cover of Newsweek magazine, and you might have heard me
tell my story, but you've never heard the real story.

I hated him.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
I hated Jem Paul because he was very good at
what he did.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
So join me as I peel back the layers and
expose what happened to me in the midst of conversion therapy,
to shine a light on what the X game movement
does to people and the pain it continues to cause.
And as I look too at the harm I did
from within.

It, I'd lost one hundred fifty pounds because if I
couldn't control my sexuality, I was going to control my weight.

It sounded like and this is the word I used,
and I said, I'm concerned for him. I don't want
him to get caught in something that is going to
be a bad situation for it.
