Speaker 1 (00:00):

Man super excited.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
For a guest on our show today.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Some will call him him, some say that he is
a guy that never misses. Give it up for the one,
the only, Carmelo Hayes, mellow man, It's good to have
you on the show.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Man, how are you?

Speaker 2 (00:29):
What's up?

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Bra?

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Most people would say, I don't miss it. Most people
would call me him. Not some people.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Everybody, We're not gonna even say that.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Not some not most everybody says that mellow miss never misses.
I gotta ask you real quick, how's the wedding planning going.
I know it's stressful, as somebody that has been in
this situation before.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
It's going good. Connie's handling a lot of it. She's
on top of it, and I'm giving my two cents.
When when warranted, a lot of people thought that we
already got married. I guess that was like the big thing.
The wedding is in October. Everybody or engagement photos and
I'm super excited and we're havoy there really.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
And it'll be here before you know it and heads
up if you need a DJ. By the way, I
do that outside of this radio and podcasting thing.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
So if you're in a DJs right, yeah, I got
you man. If you need one, we'll set it up now.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
I do want to talk about this real quick because
back in the NXTO days, you unified championships as nobody
had ever touched at the same time, did you feel
that you had to do more than everyone else just
to get noticed.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
I always feel like that. I still feel like that.
I didn't think the championships really made a difference or not,
but I do remember winning them in HBK being like, hey, like,
you're winning both of these titles, Like you know, you
don't have to step up and really prove to a
lot of people that probably don't think that you deserve
it why you're winning both of these titles. So, I mean,

(01:51):
I always have that chip on my shoulder of having
to prove and do more than what's expected.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
I guess yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
And what was that moment like for you when Sean
came to you and said, hey, we're giving you both titles,
Because obviously that shows that they have a lot of faith.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
In you Yeah, I think it was that. I think
it was, you know at the time if I actually
haven't talked about it in a lot of time, so
I'm almost having to remember. At the time, it was
kind of we were overlapping, you know, the Black and
Gold era, and we were just putting that like final stamp,
I hate the like nailing the coffin two point zero,

(02:28):
I mean to Black and Gold. But it felt like
it was kind of like, hey, we're starting something new.
We're getting almost rid of that Cruiserweight championship and you
know you're going to carry that North American championship. Because
we never really talked about it. I was the thing,
you know, I won the title and it was kind
of just that was it, you know, the Cruiserweight title.
But but Sean and I had a bunch of talks
like that, and you know, he mentioned to me a

(02:50):
lot of times like hey, we're running with you, Like hey,
like I need you to do your part, you know,
I need you to do and I need you to
be my guy. You know, same with.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Braun right assolutely.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
And the one thing that everybody talks about is from
that NXT era as the mellow Don't miss which was
must see TV every week.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
At what point did you realize that crowd was yours?

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Mm? That crowd is wishy washy even still to this day.
Like that crowd, they're never yours, They're they're who's hot
in the moment. And I knew that, and I understood that,
and it was one of those things where, you know,
I even did a promo with Trick where it's like
they love you on the rise, and then when it's
the next guy cerin, they'll switch on you. And that's

(03:34):
the truth. Man. That crowd, you know, they'll make it,
but they'll also break you.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Absolutely, Uh Friday Night SmackDown for it worth Dickie's Arena
April twenty fourth. You can still get those tickets ticketmaster
dot com, WWE dot com. And speaking of SmackDown, being
drafted as high as you were is a massive deal.
That was the call up that everybody had been talking about.
Did the main roster feel like everything you imagine or
did it humble you?

Speaker 2 (04:02):
I didn't need to be humbled, And that was the
thing I think a lot of people probably think, you know,
I went up with a big head or whatever. I
didn't need to be humbled. I knew what the job was.
I understood the assignment. You know, I ran you know,
the play that was put in front of me, and
that's what I did in NXT and no different and
on the main roster, I just think the machine is
just a lot bigger.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Yeah, what was that one adjustment for you from going
from NXT to that main roster?

Speaker 2 (04:27):
It was a lot of adjustments, but you know, I
think it had a lot to do with just a
learning curve and just like the enormity of what the
main roster is compared to you know, mom and pop
of NXT in a way where you know, it's a
little bit more low key and you know, they have
a little bit more control on you as far as

(04:47):
you know, you're you're more clued in on things and
you kind of have a better idea of what is
what and then main roster is kind of like every
man for themselves if that makes sense.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
Yeah, No, absolutely for sure.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
And something really cool happened for you, Uh you won
the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, which is an
awesome feat. You put that right there on your career
stats for a kid that grew up watching w W,
What did that actually that.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Moment mean for you when you won the Battle Royal.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Mm, I mean I was always Championship Gold oriented. I
didn't grow up saying I wanted to win the Battle Royal.
But it was cool, man. I mean it did feel
like it was a little bit of like a reward
for my hard work. But like I said, I was
championship oriented regardless, So it wasn't good enough, you know.

(05:39):
I wasn't just like, yeah, I won the battle, but like, no,
it was you know, I want to be the I
want to be a freaking champ. You know what I mean.
This is cool, but like, where's my title?

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (05:47):
You know what I mean. I'm looking for I'm looking
for the I'm looking for the gold, you know. But
it was a cool moment, and the crowd reaction was
really really cool to hear like that. So many people
were excited. I was finally getting some some momentum.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Yeah, absolutely for sure. And you mentioned title. I gotta say, Uh,
your US title.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
Reign had some of the best open challenges that we've
seen on SmackDown in years.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
Was there a name that you wanted to see walk
through that curtain that didn't.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Hmmm? Yeah? Wow? Uh yeah, I mean, yeah, there was
definitely names like you know, I wish a lot of Raw.
I wish I could have worked with a lot of
people from Raw, you know. I wish I could have
worked with like Kofi. I wish there was There's there's
a bunch of matches that you know, I mean there's
guys high up that obviously, Yeah, but you know, uh,

(06:38):
Kofe was one of them. Raimsterea was another one of them.
I think that was on the table at one point. Yeah,
guys like that. I mean there's a there's a ton
of guys.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
You know.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
I went out there every week, different styles, different companies,
different opponent levels, all you know, all over the place,
and I had to adjust and that was a great
learning experience for me, like that whole process and know that, uh,
I don't know, I'm many weeks it was, but I
think it was. Somebody said it was like three months.
You know, it was like eight defenses or something like that. So,
you know, I learned a lot from that, from the

(07:08):
Open Challenge, and I feel like I got so much
better being a part of that.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
Man, I really wish we would have got that Mellow
and Ray Mysterio match that would have been definitely a
match of the Irri candidate for sure. Now, I do
want to talk about this because you mentioned it earlier
for a little bit, and of course after what took
place at Smacked Down.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
You lose your titles.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Of course, everybody on the internet has their own thoughts
of why and when and all this other stuff.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
What do you want to address to those people.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
Talking about these rumors of why you lost the drop
the title and anything else.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
Well, what rumors are they saying?

Speaker 3 (07:42):
The rumors were that you lost it because you were
having a wedding, and there's other things here and there.
I want to give you the opportunity to have the
floor and tell the people on the internet.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
This probably is not the platform for that, you know.
I mean, we got smacked on off Friday. I think
that'll be a more appropriate platform to kind of, you know,
address what is going on. I mean, you know, I'm
heartbroken that I'm not champion anymore. That was something that
I took a lot of pride in. You know, we'll
see what's on the table for WrestleMania, But as far
as that goes, I think, you know, smack Now is

(08:15):
probably the appropriate platform for that.

Speaker 1 (08:17):
So you better tune in this Friday Night SmackDown because
we'll hear all of it.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
So don't believe everything you read on the internet. Is
what we're telling you right now.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
Please don't believe everything you read on the internet. Bro,
Please don't believe.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
And that's what's wild is because nobody when you see
those things on the internet. And that's why we're giving
you the op the platform here. People always like to
assume things. Everything is this, everything is that, and until
it comes from actually mellow, don't believe everything you read
on the internet.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
And I try not to get too deep into where
I like have to feel like I need to clear
it up or anything like that, like if it starts
taking off, I don't like to have to do that
just because, but I see how can really quickly, you know,
transform into a truth if people don't, if you don't
put us up to it. Like the honeymoon thing, I
was like really surprised by that. I was like, really,

(09:09):
people think I'm losing my title and to go on honey.

Speaker 3 (09:14):
Like like out of all the things they say, that's
why it's love.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
I love my girl. I love my girl. But like
she she would, she would understand right absolutely.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
Now, what is it Because it's a really cool thing
that you're both in the same industry.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
So what is that like?

Speaker 3 (09:31):
Being able to both do what you love while doing
it with someone you love?

Speaker 2 (09:36):
Uh, it's I think it's a cheat code. I mean
a sense of like, uh, you know, you got somebody
that understands kind of the ups and the downs of
the business. You know, you got somebody that the ends
and the outs. You know what I mean. There's you know,
there's a lot that people don't understand about what we
do that you know they'll never understand. You know, they
think that we're just characters that go on TV. But

(09:57):
you know we put in so much work and and
mental and emotional time and effort into everything that we do.
And you know what I mean, this this game is
it's ruthless, and you know what I mean, it takes
a toll on you. And having somebody that understands that,
or having somebody that I guess you know, can sympathize
with the ups and the downs, like even in my sense,

(10:19):
you know, there's nothing that she's going to go through
or is going through that I haven't experienced. So I'm
able to be there for her, you know, to explain
to her this is why, this is how, this is where,
this is what you should do, and vice versa. You know,
in times I need to lean on her. It's good
for that. And like I said, just just understanding kind
of the days, like the hustles and the bustle of
the ins and the outs of this business.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
Yeah, absolutely for sure.

Speaker 3 (10:39):
Now what we've I've I've loved is I've loved this
this chemistry that you and Trick had from NXT to
now you know you're together.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
You weren't together, but.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
It's got to be a cool moment for you for
somebody like Trick to praise you saying that you carried
the US title great, that you deserve your mania moment
and he believes you're still going to get it after
everything between you and Trick. Hearing him say words like that,
what does that do for you?

Speaker 2 (11:05):
I mean, he's not wrong. I mean I don't know,
it's not wrong. I mean I don't know what then
do anything for me? Yeah, you know what I'm saying.
I think we'll see what happens, you know.

Speaker 1 (11:16):
Right, absolutely for sure.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
Well, I know that our time is coming up here
to end this thing. I know WW SmackDown Come into
Dallas Fort Worth. Grab those tickets ticketmaster dot Com. April
twenty fourth. As we get close to the end of
the show, we always like to have some fun with
our guests. If you could have any song outside of
what your current theme song is, it could be any
mainstream song, it could be any song. Who would you

(11:41):
want to have as your WrestleMania theme song?

Speaker 1 (11:45):
If you could pick any song.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
Or artist, probably J Cole, probably Middle Child. If you
don't know it, look at it, you probably know your
radio guy middle Child J Cole.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
Oh dude, that oof. Can we let's put it out
of the universe.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
When Melow gets making a list checking it twice.

Speaker 1 (12:08):
Let's let's do it.

Speaker 3 (12:09):
I mean, I know Jay Cole's been traveling the country
and it's Honda Civic doing this new album thing. So
maybe there, you know, once we find out what happens
at SmackDown, maybe Jay Cole makes a stop in Vegas.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
And uh maybe thats what happens. I don't know, we'll
see what happened. We're throwing it out in the universe.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
Uh, Mello, really do appreciate you spending your time hanging
out with US. I know you're a busy man with
with wedding planning and uh getting that US title back
because we're putting out the universe. Because we were all
ticked off when it happened, including my nine year old kid.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
He was not happy. Uh so he turned the TV off.
I'll tell you that much. Appreciate you coming on the
show man.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
Anything you want to say to the fans watching or
listening to this real quick before we let you go.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
Yeah, fort Worth, Texas. We're super excited about coming back
to the Dicky's Arena. It's going to be a great
show right out the I think it's a first show
at the WrestleMania right mm hm, the WrestleMania. We'll catch
that Wrestle India fallout while we can't wait to be there.
Always a great time in Texas, especially that Fort Worth area,
so we're looking forward to it. May
