Just the other day we started our Ten Commandments series
that started on episode one hundred and thirty two. If

(00:50):
you want to go back and listen to the first
podcasts of this series. And today we are on episode
one hundred and thirty three and discussing the second Commandment. Now,
the second commandment is very similar to the first. The
first commandment says you shall have no other Gods before me,

(01:12):
and the second commandment in its entirety says you shall
not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness
of anything that is in Heaven above, or that is
in the earth beneath, or that is in the water
under the earth. You shall not bow down to them
or serve them. For I the Lord your God, am
a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on

(01:37):
the children to the third and the fourth generation of
those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands
of those who love me.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
And keep my commandments.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
In short, Commandment number two says you shall not make
idols and worship these idols. And the intentionality behind this
commandment is remarkable because idol worship was rampant among the

(02:11):
nations surrounding Israel. Most of those nations had carved images
to which they bowed, sacrificed, and performed various acts of worship.
So if you are receiving these commandments, this is directly
opposite of what cultures were doing. And God warned the

(02:35):
Israelite people to keep themselves separate from the idolatry worshippers,
from the nations that worship titles. And the point that
stands out to me is, I, the Lord your God,
am a jealous God. Now, the word jealous can mean

(02:57):
so many different things. Because you hear the word jealousy
and your mind immediately goes to something bad, something that
you shouldn't do. But jealousy can also be a good thing.
For example, God, the creator of the universe, is a

(03:19):
jealous God because there's nobody that should be worshiped except
for God himself. If God wasn't jealous at others worshiping
down to false idols, then there's something wrong with that picture.
Let's paint the picture in your own mind. You come

(03:41):
home from work and your husband or wife is sitting
down with another woman or man at the dinner table
with your kids having conversation. When you walk in that
door and you see what's going down, you have every

(04:02):
right to be jealous in that situation. What God knows
is that He is the only one worthy of being worshiped.
So if there is an idol in your life that
you are worshiping instead of God himself, then He is

(04:24):
going to be jealous. And it's a righteous jealousy because
our attention and honor, our reverence, our fear, our worship
who we bow down to should be to God and
only God himself. Even things that are good things can

(04:51):
become idols. Family is a great thing, but if we
replace God with our family, then we are making our
family and idol It's the same thing with work, hobbies, money, cars,
whatever the case may be. Good things can become idols

(05:15):
if we make it a god thing.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Thank you for joining this episode today.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
I hope it was encouraging for you, and I hope
the Holy Spirit revealed more and more about our Lord

Speaker 2 (05:27):
And Savior, Jesus Christ.
