Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, everyone, I'm Carrie Hartman, one of the producers of
Burden of Guilt. Thank you so much for listening, for
writing to us, for your feedback, and for caring about
Jermaine and Bobby's story. As these episodes are released, we've
been wondering what it's been like for them to relive
all of this, so we reached out after the latest episode.

(00:23):
First I had a conversation with Bobby and then Jermaine,
but we'll start with Bobby Gumbright. I want to talk
to you a little bit about episode three. So this
episode is called the front Gate. A lot happens, including
an analysis of the court testimony, and that was when
you were nineteen years old. What has it been like

(00:46):
to hear that episode and hear that analysis and how
did that strike you.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
It was interesting to hear the entire transcript the way
that it was replayed in the podcast. Some of the
details I had actually forgot and myself just because it
was so long ago and with years of drug abuse,
you tend to not have the best memories, so there
were parts that did get me quite emotional listening to it.

(01:14):
But I don't think that anything was misportrayed or incorrect
in any of the observations.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
What was the most surprising part that you hadn't recalled
till you heard it in the show.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
The fact that a juror had said that I had
come over and thanked them after they had come back
with the verdict.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
You're talking about Jermaine's trial after the jury found Jermaine guilty.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Yeah, I don't remember doing that, but it seems like
at that time that would have been in my character
and my thought process to say something like that.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Bobby, you're a very direct and open person. You said
that this episode brought you to tears. Why.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
I've spent a lot of self reflection and time examining
my actions, So I've gone through a lot of the
emotional states through that, But when you hear it in
a format like this, it it puts a whole other
level on it, I think, and it just it made

(02:28):
me very emotional. It reminded me of what I was
and what I never want to return to. I think
a lot of the times if I start to get
emotional talking about the way that I was or the
things that I had done, a lot of the times
people see it as sorrow, and it is to a point,
but a lot of the times, it's joyful tears that

(02:51):
I'm no longer that person.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Episode three was also a tough listen for Jermaine. There
were so many details about his own case that he
was hearing for the first time. So here's my call
with Jermaine Hudson. I want to talk to you about
the front Gate episode three. One of the things that
happens in that episode is Bobby explains exactly how he

(03:20):
came up with the lie that he told and how
he worked it all out. What was it like for
you to hear him explain that.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
To be honest, it was painful. I wasn't aware of
all the lie he told to his family. I wasn't
aware that he'd been a problemself and seen eight years old.
I never knew a lot of the things that he expressed,
a lot of the things that he revealed. It really
brought toe a surmise because for a person to go

(03:53):
to that extant, you know, to cover up the things
that he's doing, the thing that he's suffering with, and
the drama that comes behind it. You bought me along
in your problems in your life. You made me a
part of your drug happy You know and never thought.

(04:14):
I never thought no human being could sit down and
create a period so vicious. To hear how he broke
down everything from the beginning to the end, and he
gave the ins and outs of how he was going
to do it, and it really just stunnedy. I was like, Wow,

(04:34):
whoa dad.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
You were always under the impression that it was a
mistaken identity, right, not something that he made up.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
I really did in the beginning, I just really felt
like it was a mistaken identity because you know, they
looked at all us as the same, and I really
just felt in my heart as a mistake and identity.
This wasn't a mistake in identity, after all, this was
the guy that really will detirement to hide his drug

(05:08):
abuse from his family.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
You didn't want to be his folds, and you didn't
want to be looked at as a failure. You didn't
want to be looked at as a drug add So
what you did was you tried to take all of
that and you tried to hide it by doing what
you did, But then you destroyed another family behind your life.

(05:33):
Every thank God revealed to me and burden of guilt.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
