Crime Alert hourly update, breaking crime news Now, I'm Nicole. Pardon.
Pre trial suppression hearings are scheduled for Monday in the
New York state case against Luigi Mangioni. The twenty seven
year old is charged with the murder of Brian Thompson,
the CEO of United Healthcare, who was shot and killed
last December. Mangioni has pleaded not guilty to both state

(00:22):
and federal charges. On Tuesday, his defense team submitted a
pre trial motion reiterating their request for Mangoni to be
unshackled at the defense table, allowing him at least one
hand free for writing. Last month, a judge granted permission
for Mangoni to wear civilian clothing during court proceedings. The

(00:42):
defense is also contesting the admissibility of specific evidence, including
a notebook discovered in his backpack, arguing that it was
obtained without a warrant and without him being informed of
his rights, which they claim violates the Fourth Amendment. The
defense maintains that allowing the notebooks contents to be presented
in court would unfairly influence potential jurors against Mangione. Additionally,

(01:07):
Mangioni faces a federal trial where he could be sentenced
to death, with a court appearance set for January nine.
Federal prosecutors assert that the search of his backpack was
necessary to ensure he did not have any dangerous items.
Mangioni's legal team has sought to have the charges in
the federal case dismissed and to prevent the death penalty

(01:29):
from being considered. In September, state terrorism charges against him
were dropped. He is also facing charges in Pennsylvania, where
he was arrested, but that case is currently stalled as
Mangioni has refused to participate in remote court proceedings while
incarcerated in New York. Thompson fifty was shot in the

back on December fourth, twenty twenty four, while heading to
the United health Care Investor Conference in Manhattan. Investigators found
shell casings at the scene inscribed with the words delay
and deny, which seemed to critique the healthcare industry. Stay

news After this. David Grubbs, a twenty three year old
grocery store worker, was tragically discovered dead on a bike
path in southern Oregon shortly after five point thirty pm
on November nineteen, twenty eleven. His demise was particularly brutal,

(02:33):
with authorities suspecting that he had been attacked with a large,
sharp edged object multiple times in his head and neck,
resulting in near decapitation as he made his way home
from the shopping cart where he was working. This is
not a robbery. His wallet and the beer he purchased
after work was untouched, stated Ashland Police Chief Ti o'mera.

(02:56):
It seems to have been a random act of violence.
The violent assault along a well trafficked bike path near
an elementary school. Since shock waves through the small town
of Ashland, which has a population of around twenty one
thousand people, we typically experienced very few murders here, averaging
about one every seven years, o'meira said. For someone like David,

(03:18):
who was simply walking home from work in the dark
on a frequently used bike path, to be attacked in
such a horrific manner raises many questions. Unfortunately, we don't
have the answers, and the random nature of this crime
makes it all the more unsettling for this small community. O'Meara,
who was the patrol supervisor on duty that faithful night,

(03:39):
said it was snowing that day and by the time
we arrived it was completely dark. The assailant could have
acted under near total cover. It's possible David had no
indication that someone was approaching him. Now, fourteen years after
Grubb's tragic murder, the case remains cold and unsolved. David
was well liked and had no known enemies. O'meira says

(04:02):
he was friendly and approachable, making him a favorite among
his coworkers. This complicates the investigation as it offers few
leads to pursue. Even when the case was presented to
FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit, they concluded there was not enough
information to work with. This case stands out as a
rare and baffling murder investigation. Over the years, law enforcement

(04:24):
has spoken to hundreds of people, but no suspects have
been identified or arrested. There have been instances where individuals
have boasted about the crime. Omeira said, I recall investigating
claims made by some partygoers who said they committed the murder,
but they often take credit for every homicide in Jackson County,
and they don't do any of them. He said authorities

(04:47):
have placed a twenty one thousand dollars reward for information
leading to the arrest and conviction of Grubb's killer. I
refrain from labeling it as a cold case or a
closed case because I want everyone to know that it
remains open in my mind and active for any possibility,
O'Meara said. I've assured David's family and friends that we
will continue to look and search until we find justice.

(05:10):
I genuinely want to believe that we can find the answer.
Someone out there has information, and caring that weight for
fourteen years must be exhausting, he said. Anyone with information
regarding the murder is encouraged to reach out to the
Ashland Police Department at five four one four eight eight
two two one one. And on this day of Thanksgiving,

(05:32):
let me pause to say thank you for allowing us
into your home, into your workplace, your car. We appreciate
that you trust us to bring you the latest crime
and justice news from my family to yours. Happy Thanksgiving
and with this crime alert, I'm Nico partn
