The trial for the Florida State University student charged with
the fatal shooting of two people and injuring six others
on campus in April is scheduled to start this November.
During a case management conference held at a Tallahassee courthouse
on Wednesday, Second Judicial Circuit Judge Lance Neff announced that

(00:23):
jury selection for twenty year old Phoenix Eichner will start
the week of November. Aigner's attorney, Public defender Peter Mills,
expressed the need for additional time to thoroughly investigate the case,
saying he needed more time to watch extensive video clips.
I object to the proposed timeline, your honor, Meals, stated,

(00:44):
I am still in the process of gathering information. Judge
Nef responded, indicating his willingness to address mills concerns, saying
we can discuss what you require on the prosecution side.
Second Judicial Circuit State attorney Jack Campbell affirmed, we will
be ready.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
I looked at the calendar and at this point I
see no reason and I said this for trial on
the week of November three. Order for one Section sixteen
be ten of the Florida Constitution. There's a right to
proceedings free from a reasonable delay and prompt to find
a resolution to the extent that doesn't seem to be
anything that keeps us from going to trial. At this point,

(01:24):
we'll go ahead and set it for trial. I want
to make sure I heard you correctly. Maybe jury's selection
day no.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
November third, Thank you, honor, We'll be ready. Did I
hear you correctly to say that you want to set
mister Eichner's case for trial November third of twenty twenty
five or twenty twenty six, twenty twenty five. I object
to that, Judge. I am still investigating the case. My
client's entitled to effective assistance of council.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Currently, the defense has not engaged in the discovery phase,
where both parties exchange evidence and witness information. How However,
Aigner's attorney indicated this will soon change. Aigner is facing
two counts of first degree murder and seven counts of

pursue the death penalty in the case. More crime and
justice news after this. An Arkansas couple faces battery charges
following the alleged mistreatment of their seven year old son,

(02:38):
who was admitted to an Arkansas children's hospital this week
after being severely malnourished. He weighed only twenty eight pounds
and appeared quote pale and limp. Chris Freeman thirty nine
and Caitlin Freeman, twenty seven have been charged with endangering
a minor as the investigation continues and may result in

(02:58):
additional charges. According to the Russellville Police Department, the couple
brought their son to the Dardenville Regional Medical Center early Tuesday,
where he was subsequently transferred to the children's hospital. Medical
personnel reported that the child had endured years of malnutrition,
classifying his condition as quote near fatality. During the investigation,

(03:22):
authorities discovered that the Freeman's home was unsuitable for children,
including a closet where the boy had reportedly been confined
for days, even bound with rope. The floor of the
closet contained human waste, while the rest of the home
was stocked with ample food and several thousand dollars in cash.
The freemens confess to keeping their son in the closet,

(03:45):
citing concerns over potential consequences and embarrassment as a reason
for not seeking medical help sooner. Investigators have labeled the
situation as quote physical and mental torture. And now to
South Carolina, where an entire family has pleaded guilty to
murdering a missing man. Four members of a South Carolina

(04:07):
family admitted to their roles in the man's murder just
before their trial was set to begin. Online records show
that Peyton, Samantha, Jonathan, and Amber Watts all pleaded guilty
on Monday, before jury selection was set to get under way.

to five years of probation and Jonathan Watts was sentenced
to time served after spending nine hundred and eight days
in jail. Ye Souls, who was from Chadbourne, North Carolina,
was first reported missing at the beginning of January. His
body was found a couple of weeks later in the

(05:10):
Green Sea area. During the hearings in the case, it
was revealed that Samantha Watts and her two sons beat
the man with an iron pull sometime between January eight
and nine. Authorities said Souls was in a wheelchair at
the time of the assault because he had broken his
