Speaker 1 (00:01):
Dropping Diamonds with AJ Andrews is an iHeart women's sports
production and partnership with athletes, Unlimited Softball League and Deep
Blue Sports and Entertainment. Welcome, Welcome to Dropping Diamonds with
Me AJ Andrews, where we dive headfirst into the world
of softball. Today is breaking news because the AUSL has
(00:26):
officially expanded its league from four teams two six, adding
on the ok City Spark and the Cascade, which we
don't know what city they will be in just yet,
but we're excited to see. And I have Sam who
will be joining me to talk all things expansion for
the AUSL and answer all the questions that I know
(00:47):
you have. But first we have to start with our
fabulous quote and affirmation for the day. So when we
talk about expanding the league, it's also expanding the power
for women in sports, expanding the notification and expanding the
coverage and expanding the possibilities. So for that, our quote
for today is going to be be relentless in your
(01:07):
pursuit for expansion, whatever that means for you as a
softball player, as a woman in sport. Be relentless in
your pursuit of expanding the possibilities for who you are
and what you can be. And so for our affirmation,
I think we will go with today. I will expand
my mind, the grind, and my time because today my
(01:30):
confidence is sublime and sublime for all those that you
know maybe do not know, because that's a big word.
It means extremely high and excellence or beauty and inspiring,
awe and wonder. So your confidence today is sublime. It's bigger,
it's better than ever and is continuing to expand. And Sam,
speaking of expansions, let's get into it. Okay, So Sam,
(01:59):
a huge news for AUSL announced the two expansion teams
for twenty twenty six, bringing on the Oka City Spark
and then also new team, the Cascade. Can you drop
where the Cascade is going to be or is that
a secret that will be revealed another time.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
I love that you open with the hardest hitting question
and I'm gonna tell you that that will be revealed
at a later time.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Ing it, I tried, but I love that. I really
love that. Okay, Well, the two teams. What went into
the decision of bringing on the Okay City spar because
I was already a team that lived and now bringing
into the AUSL being the Oklahoma City is such a
huge softball space, It's where the World Series is held,
it is where the Olympics will be held in the
(02:53):
upcoming eleven twenty twenty eight. So when you thought about
bringing the Spark, why was that a team that aus
I really wanted to jump in.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Yeah, I think for all the reasons that you said,
like Oklahoma City it has been just such a hotbed
for our sport from college to now, like you said,
the international game in bringing the Olympics here in twenty
twenty eight, But I know that people above my pay
grade were also involved in making these decisions of like,
you know, what does it mean for us as a business,
what does it mean for us in marketing? And we've
(03:22):
seen all the athletes that have competed for the Spark,
and we also we want them in playing with us
as well, Like there's some amazing, amazing players that we're
excited at having the opportunity to bring them over. And
I think it was just very much a you know,
a show of all right, we see pro softball as
(03:43):
it is now, we see the you know, where we
want to go, and I think this was a huge
step in accomplishing the goal of getting closer to where
we want to be as a sport professionally.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Yeah, okay, city all the talent on that team, and
then the cascade. How many players each team now hold
now that they're six teams to say the same.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Each team will stay the same. They'll have sixteen players
with a minimum of five pitchers each.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Okay. And then when it comes to the teams, I
know people had a lot of questions regarding the upcoming
news or the news that came out a few days
ago where the teams laid out what the teams look
like right now, and then teams that are a part
of what could be the allocation of for the Spark
or for the Cascade, Can you break down a little
(04:33):
bit more? I know people were confused of Okay, well
I don't see this person's name or this person is
not a part of what could be what the draft?
What went into the decision of who is still on
the team and who is not.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
So after the twenty twenty five season, the teams were
given the opportunity to evaluate their teams and to see,
you know, who do they want to retain, who do
they want to release and let go for opportunity elsewhere,
and so those players now have the chance to opt
in and be in a pool that they can be
drawn from by all six teams. So the other piece
(05:11):
of it is, you know, teams needing to make room
for the expansion for the college Draft. We all know
that the twenty twenty sixth class is like insane and enormous,
so that's upcoming. So a lot of factors came into
how they are looking at their rosters now. And the
expansion draft will be only the two expansion teams will
(05:31):
only be drawing from the rostered unprotected AOSL players and
if a player is not so, for example, AJ, if
you're on the blaze and the expansion teams do not
draw you, you will remain on the blaze. So that's
kind of how that's working with those rosters. If that
answers your question.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
And so, then if you didn't see someone I know,
I just look into the comments that people saying I
don't see so and those name, I don't see so
and so's name. Does that mean that they were released
then they opted out of being a part of the
allocation draft.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
It might mean that they just haven't opted in yet.
We're giving players up until November twenty fourth to decide
to opt in. So it could mean anybody who played
with us in the ASL if there was a player
that was you know, removed from a roster or not
retained by their team, I sent them the opportunity to
opt in, So it very well could be they just
have not signed up yet.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Okay, And so then yeah, if and when you do
opt in, then you are a part of the individuals
that can be drafted to either of the six teams.
And correct the Cascade, does Cascade get yes? I mean
how many is it the same amount of people each
(06:45):
team can draft? Or just say, like the Cascade a
brand new team that has no one get a little
bit more so, this.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Spark are actually also in that boat. Both teams, the
Cascade and the Spark are starting with zero players. Oh okay,
their first players on their rosters will come from the
expansion Draft.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
So that's how I'm like visualizing it.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
It's like just pulling over to like even out those
rosters and then everybody has a chunk of people on
their team and then they'll go into the allocation draft
and draw from there. So the Spark players, if they
choose to opt in sign sign up for that they
are going all of them will be going into the
allocation draft and the available there. So yeah, so both
(07:32):
teams have zero players and they will be drawing. We're
saying that they can have between six and eight players
on their roster after the expansion Draft, So they can
choose to stop after six or they can go all
the way up to eight.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
When you say they can have six to eight, oh,
they can as far as before the draft or the
twenty twenty.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
Six, as far as the expansion So when they entered
the expansion draft with no players, they can come out
of the expansion Draft after they go through it with
between six and eight players.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Okay, so at the end of yeah, at the end
of the draft, the Cascade and the Spark will have
sixty eight.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Players, and then all six teams will go into the
allocation and they they can have a variety because all
we've told the teams is that they need to draw
at least two from the college draft. So at the
very most, a roster after both of these drafts will
have fourteen, but they could have less because they might
want to pick more from the college draft.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
There's more to cover. But first, let's take a quick break.
The draft is going to take place on December first,
And when it comes to the draft, is it set
(08:56):
up similarly the way that it was set up for
a USL in twenty twenty five or is it a
completely different format based off of the junior teams as
far as like who's picking first.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Yeah, I think the goal is to have like the
Golden ticket and those those things happen again. But with
we've focused so much on this expansion that the college
draft has been like, Hi, I'll wait for you to
figure out until we get through this so that we
can see what the plan is going to be. But
now that we've gone through it, I think it was
really helpful to see how successful it was with these
(09:28):
golden ticket moments, so that we can maybe start planning
sooner and start seeing if we can maybe recreate that
and and whatnot. But this, this college draft class is huge,
and it's so strong that I'm I'm I'm even curious,
I'm like, how is this? How's this going to go?
Speaker 1 (09:45):
And then so the December first, they're not drafting the college.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Growth No, no, no, no, no, It'll be in this
spring that'll be, it'll be in this spring, and so.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
Then the draft on the first, it's going to who
has the first picked, you know.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
The expansion teams will There's gonna be a coin flip
between the two of them because essentially the expansion teams
and the expansion Draft, they're the only ones picking. So
it's going to go in a snake format. So whoever
wins the time talks, they get the first pick, and
then it'll snake. And then after the expansion draft, we evaluate, Okay,
which of the are four original AUSL teams lost how
(10:21):
many players, et cetera, and then that will then determine
the draft order of the allocation draft. So if you
lost five players, you might you might get to pick
sooner to make up for it, versus if you only
lost three players from your original team. So it's the
that draft order will be determined based on how the
expansion goes.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
Okay, gotcha. So the two expansion teams are the only
teams that are picking from the draft on December first,
Cricked and every So the four teams the current four
teams of the Blaze, the Talents and Bandits, and the
who am I missing Bolts? Bolts bolts are they can
protect five players, and so there's five players that cannot
(11:03):
be taken from those rosters. Correct. Have they announced those
five players already?
Speaker 2 (11:08):
Not yet, No, but the plan is for those to
start coming out shortly so that people know who's being protected,
and as the expansion teams draw, they'll so because each
of the four AOSL teams get to protect five, the
expansion teams are going to go through and they're going
to draw five each, and then once everybody's at five,
the AOSL teams will have the chance to protect another player.
(11:32):
They can then protect another player, and then the expansion
teams can pick. So there's a little bit of a
nuance there, and like, once everybody's at five, okay, we
can see who we still have on our rosters. We
can protect one more person and then keep going like
that up until either the expansion teams decide to stop
(11:52):
picking or they get to eight. Okay, all right, I
know this is like an information done.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
I'm so sorry if you're no, I think, but that's
I think that's what was needed because I know a
lot of people had a lot of questions based off
of what was Yes, all the news that had dropped
the last couple of days. So I think this is
perfect to clear everything up. And I'm so glad. I
think we've I think we've answered everything. Is there anything
else you want to mention regarding the draft or the
(12:19):
expansion teams?
Speaker 2 (12:20):
The draft is going to be on ESPN U, so
that's going to be really fun. But no, I think
that these these were all the questions because I I
be up on the social media, so I see all
the questions and I'm like, I want to go and
I want to answer, and I want to make sure
that everybody knows what's going on and where, you know,
how we got here.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
So I think this is really helpful.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
I'm so glad that you're asking asking the questions in
a way in a format that we can go and
be like, here's all the answers. Yes, because I'm those
were those were what I was seeing as well. So
I'm really happy to have the opportunity to maybe clear
some things up and give some clarity.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
Well, two new teams getting bigger. Yeah, I know you
want to say this city, but like West coast, East coast, Midwest,
it will be in the United States of America. Dang it. Okay,
so we won't have like maybe that was so good. Yeah,
(13:14):
that was good. That was good. This suspense. You even
gave like a little suspense before answering to us, thinking
maybe she'll tell us. Nope, nope. Okay, well one day
I feel like we should, you know, as continues to grow.
Don't won't get greedy too soon, but maybe like you know,
a Toronto team or something.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Listen, I mean Toronto is trending, you know, so trending topic.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
They did their big one yeah, well, you know, sort of,
and they did their best. Yeah, did their best. They
came really close. Yeah, okay, Well, Sam, thank you so
much for all the info in regards to the two
new expansion teams for the AUSL, as well as what
the draft will look like on December first. And I
hope this was helpful for everyone that has these questions.
