Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to Good Game with Sarah Spain, where we're obsessed
with Nfler Miles Garrett narrating girlfriend Chloe Kim's Get Ready
with Me video The contour.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
It is that? What this is?

Speaker 3 (00:12):
Its contouring? Mm hmm, sexy high Gortina, It's too good.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
It's Monday, April twenty seventh, and on Today Show, Olympic
champion and captain of the PWHL's Boston Fleet, Megan Keller
talks about the fleet's focus heading into the playoffs, what
it was like taking on the role of captain this year,
and her favorite memories from the Milan Courtina gold medal
game and all the ensuing celebrations like going on SNL
and meeting Connor story, plus the w is so back.

(00:42):
All good things must come to an end. And the
field in Madrid is sick. Oh I'm sorry, read that wrong.
The field in Madrid is actually sick. It's all coming
up right after this welcome back slices. Here's what you

(01:04):
need to know today. Starting with hoops, the WNBA preseason
officially got underway over the weekend, and hoo boy, am
I excited to say that there was a real minute
there in the offseason where we weren't sure if or
when this weekend would come. While the outcomes don't matter,
these are our first looks at the rookies and a

(01:24):
bunch of teams that look wildly different from last year.
The action started Saturday with the Indiana Fever taken down
the New York Liberty one nine ninety one. The Fever
were led by Shatory Walker, kimbro and Kelsey Mitchell with
eighteen points apiece, and Caitlin Clark returned to the court
for just under seventeen minutes, putting up seven points, including
one of her signature three pointers. It was great to
see Clark back out there after she played just thirteen

(01:46):
games last season dealing with multiple injuries. Fever rookie Raven
Johnson also got on the board with six points in
a game hiat assists in her first ever WNBA action.
Later on Saturday, the Minnesota Links beat the Washington Mystics
seventy seven to sixty seve and the Golden State Valkyries
just got past the Seattle Storm seventy eight seventy six.
In that one, Storm rookie Flagee Johnson got her first

(02:07):
WNBA minutes against the Valkyries, the team who drafted her
then immediately traded her. Despite the l Johnson still put
up a strong performance for the Storm with twelve points
and four rebounds in twenty three minutes. Also on Saturday,
the Phoenix Mercury beat the Chicago Sky one eight one
oh four in the w's first ever game.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
In South Dakota.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
A sellout crowd of three thousand, three hundred and fifty
seven showed up at the Sandford Pentagon in Sioux Falls
to see South Dakota native and Phoenix head coach Nate
Tibbets lead the Mercury to a win, and Kalia Copper
even showed up to the game in Tibbet's old University
of South Dakota, Jersey. Preseason games continue on Wednesday. We'll
put a link to the schedule in the show notes,
and we'll keep you posted on how the new lineups

(02:47):
are shaping up ahead of the first official tip off.
More hoops, the WNBA has announced Court Origin Nights games
during which players for the three original WNBA franchises still
in action, the New York Liberty, Los Angeles Sparks and
Phoenix Mercury will wear nineteen ninety seven inspired throwback jerseys,
and the games will feature other throwback elements both in

(03:07):
arena and on the broadcasts. The Liberty announcement video is
worth a watch and will definitely be a real nostalgia
trip for w fans of a certain age.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
We'll link to it in the show.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
Notes to International Hoops and the Project B League, which
has announced the signing of Atlanta Smith, Australian Olympian and
last year's WNBA CO Defensive Player of the Year, now
with the Dallas Wings. A spokesperson for the league also
told Front Office Sports that Kelsey Mitchell will be a
part of the league's first season this fall. Despite the
Fever star's comments on Wednesday, take a listen.

Speaker 4 (03:39):
It would have to be a drastic unique situation for
me to go back overseas. I'm not even gonna lie
to y'all I where I'm out in my career now.
I just I'd rather, like, you know, play as smart,
make sure my body is what it needs to be,
and also, you know, respecting my craft. I feel like
sometimes when you go overseas, you sid of like some
of the skills that you know are some of the

(04:00):
perfecting all your skills that you miss out on just
because you're trying to make a couple of dollars. Like
I said, I got a soul and so I'd rather
like make sure that I'm right before I want to
keep on overseas and missing out on a lot, but
on rival is still yeah, for sure, And that was
a good basketball. I was in the United States, so
I can't really complain awkward.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
We'll keep you updated on that story.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
To soccer, the NWSL returned to the pitch over the
weekend after breaking for the April FIFA window. Racing Louisville
got their first one of the year Friday, beating the
Orlando Pride three to two thanks to two goals aka
Abrace from Racing's Lauren Malay. Barbara Banda had a brace
for Orlando in the loss. Later on Friday, the Casey
current season struggles continued, failing to find the back of

(04:40):
the net against the Washington Spirit and falling four nothing
in front of a sold out crowd of over nineteen
thousand fans. The wind marked the Spirit's first home victory
of the season. Lacy Santos had a brace in the win.
Claudia Martinez became the first Paraguayan player to score an
NWSL goal, and Spirit forward Trinity Rodman had an assist
and her first goal of the season. She hit the

(05:03):
cell avi, performing a dialed in celebration by holding her
hand to her ear like a phone, just like her
BF tennis player Ben Shelton does. The Spirit chalked up
their win to a new good luck charm. While training
out in San Jose before their first win of the
season against AFC, the team fell in love with the
plastic coyotes meant to protect the practice pitch from geese
and other critters. So President of Soccer Ops in front

(05:25):
of the Show, Hailey Carter, ordered a replica coyote to
the Spirit facilities, and Jose, named after San Jose, is
the team's new mascot. Keep an eye out for appearances
from the coyote with every Spirit win. Of the four
Saturday NWSL matches, most notable was the San Diego waves
amazing comeback to take down the Denver Summit three to two.

(05:45):
The Wave were down two nail at the half, but
something good must have gone down in that locker room
because they came out swinging in the second half, scoring
three goals in sixteen minutes. Now one of those goals
was an own goal by the Summits Carson Pickett. But
a wins a win, the Wave keep their spot atop
the league standings, and they haven't lost a game since
their season opener. Meantime, the expansion Boston Legacy are still

(06:07):
looking for that first win. They fell to the Chicago
Stars to nil on Saturday. Well link to the schedule
in the show notes so you can check out the
results from the rest of the weekends matches to the PWHL.
The Ottawa Charge sealed up the fourth and final playoff
spot with a three to nothn win over the Toronto.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
Scepters on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Goaltender Gwyneth Phillips stopped all forty one shots that came
her way for a fourth straight win and third shutout
of the season. Meantime, the Montreal Victoire secured the number
one spot in the postseason with a two to one
shootout win over the Seattle torrent in front of a
sold out Climate Pledge Arena crowd of seventeen one hundred
and fifty one that included singer Brandy Carlyle, who dropped

(06:45):
the ceremonial puck to kickoff Pride Night the Torrent put
up a hell of a fight in their final game,
finally losing in the sixth round of the shootout. Despite
the effort, they ended up second in the gold Planned
Draft order standings, so the first overall pick of the
draft will go to the Vancouver Goldeneyes. Looking ahead to
the playoffs, the number one seed gave the Victoire the
power to choose their first round opponent, and they bravely,

(07:08):
perhaps foolishly, chose the number three seed Minnesota Frost, the
two time Walter Cup champions who upset higher seeds in
the semis of both their championship runs.

Speaker 3 (07:17):
It's a bold strategy, Cotton. We'll see if it works
out for him.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
That semi final series will start Saturday at two pm
Eastern at plas Bell in Quebec, and that means the
Fleet will face the Charge. That matchup will open up
the semis Thursday at seven pm Eastern at the songa
Is Center in Lowell, Massachusetts. Now just a reminder that
across the first two seasons of the PWHL, not a
single one or two seed team has ever won a

(07:41):
semi final series. Lower seeds have taken all four in
league history. More p WHL with the regular season in
the books. Friend at the show in Minnesota, Frost forward
Kelly Panic has officially locked up the season's Points leader
award and Top Goalscorer award. Panic set of p WHL
single season record with thirty three points in games, including

(08:01):
sixteen goals. Frost forward Taylor Heize finished second in the
points race with thirty while Boston's Jesse Eldridge and ottawas
Rebecca Leslie tied for second in the goals race with
fourteen apiece.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Across the Pond and to the Roads, the London.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
Marathon took place Sunday morning, with Ethiopian tigist Acepha breaking
her women's only world record to win the race in
two hours, fifteen minutes and forty one seconds. That's an
average pace of five minutes ten seconds per mile. Now.
It was a three women battle until the final minute
of the race, when defending champion Asepha pulled ahead of
kenyons Helen Obiri and Joyce Lynd jip Costkay, laying down

(08:37):
the hammer and finishing in record time. Now, by the way,
if you're wondering what it means for Acepha's time to
be the women's only world record. That qualification gets added
for women's races that are run without men on the course.
The rationale goes that men are bigger and faster than women,
so if they're on the course, it allows the women
to be shielded from the wind or paced by the men,

(08:57):
leading to an overall faster time. World Athletics Running's global
governing body has two different world records for women.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
Now, men do run the London Marathon.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
But they start the race thirty minutes later than the
women do, so any women's record set on the London
course doesn't get to be called.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
The outright world record, but for what it's worth.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
A Cepha is also third on the all time boys
allowed world recordless with her personal best of two eleven
fifty three from back in twenty twenty three. Also, Cynthia
Arrivo of Wicked Fame ran the race, and she finished
it in three hours and twenty one minutes. She just
keeps on defying gravity, speaking of that song was playing
as she crossed the finish line perfect to golf Us

(09:39):
pro Nelly Korda won the Chevron Championship in Houston on Sunday,
a massive five shot victory for the twenty seven year
old who dominated the field all weekend. Long the win
Mark's courts, third career major championship and seventeenth LPGA Tour win.
She's expected to jump from number two to number one
in the world rankings, dethroning Thailand's Gino Titkun, who surprisingly
missed the cut by one shot. Korda walks away with

(10:02):
one point three five million dollars and at a new
tradition tied to the tournament's relocation from California to Texas
a few years ago.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
She'll also get two pairs.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
Of cowboy boots, one custom pair to wear and one
golden pair to display. The move of the tournament also
meant saying goodbye to Poppy's Pond at Mission Hill, but
not to the traditional winner's leap. On Sunday, Quorda and
team christened the new man made Victory Pool at Houston's
Memorial Park. Now. One controversy that came up on Sunday
had nothing to do with golf, but instead the broadcast.

(10:32):
Corda teed off at twelve oh eight pm, but the
Peacock coverage didn't start until one thirty pm, and NBC
coverage didn't start until two, so for over an hour
on the final Sunday of the LPGA's first major of
the year, with one of the world's top golfers in
the lead, there was no way to watch the competition
on TV.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
Now.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
Fans weren't happy.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
With the move, especially with the fact that even the
streaming started late. We put out an ass to NBC
and Peacock to see what happened, and a member of
the NBC comms team replied, quote, NBC Sports has four
hours of Chevron coverage on each weekend day, and we
show the conclusion of the round slash.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
Event end quote.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
Now, I guess it makes sense if they've only got
a four hour window to prioritize folks getting to watch
the end of the event, But not sure why the
streaming wouldn't begin when the event does.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
To tennis, where.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
An illness is making its way through the Madrid Open,
US Pro Madison Keys was among the first women to fall,
victim dropping out on Friday morning, then Egos Fiantek had
to call it quits mid match, and on Sunday, world
number three Coco Goff threw up while on the court,
running off to the side during the second set. Of
her match, Goff somehow rallied to win, saying she felt
a lot better after getting sick. Hopefully she'll be feeling

(11:41):
one hundred percent for her fourth round match against thirteenth
seed Linda Noskova. Noskova herself benefited from a walkover on
Sunday after her opponent fell victim to the virus and
was unable to take the court. So maybe no postmatch
handshakes for the rest of the tournament then. As for
the players staying healthy, things mostly went chalked through the weekend.
A couple of US women fell to opponents earlier than expected,

(12:03):
though Taylor Townsend lost in straight sets in the opening
round last week, and world number five Jessica Pagoula lost
in straight sets on Sunday. The Round of sixteen takes
place throughout the day today, we're going to take.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
A break when we come back.

Speaker 1 (12:17):
It's American hero Megan Keller. I caught up with her
on Friday ahead of the Fleet's final regular season game,
stick Around.

Speaker 3 (12:32):
Joining us now.

Speaker 1 (12:32):
She's the captain of the PWHL's Boston Fleet and at
defensive stalwart who also knows how to find the back
of the net. She's represented Team USA at three Olympics,
including the most recent Winter Games in Milan, Courtina, where
she scored the overtime golden goal to lift TM USA
to the victory over Canada. She's one of only six
American hockey players with two Olympic gold medals, and she's
a six.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
Time World champ two.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
She played her college hockey for Boston College, where she
was honored three times as a Patti Casmeyer finalist and
was a two time Cammi Granado Award winner as Hockey
East Player of the Year, the only defense woman ever to.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
Win the award.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
She's a Michigander, a former Honey Baked kid. And we're
not talking Ham, or are we? And she used to
have stenciled above her bed the words dream until your
dreams Come true.

Speaker 3 (13:13):
It's American hero. Megan Keller. Hi, Megan, Hi.

Speaker 5 (13:17):
How are you doing? I can't believe how many facts
you know?

Speaker 3 (13:20):
There's so many more than that.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
Your bio is extensive and impressive, But of course we
have to start with the most important thing, which is
is that Honey Baked youth league hockey team you were
on sponsored by the Ham.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
Is that what's going on there?

Speaker 2 (13:33):
That is it's named after them, but I don't know
if we ever got any free hams or anything for
its Bushley Thanksgiving.

Speaker 1 (13:40):
The very least you get a ham or two if
you're going to rock the name. Before we get to
the fleet. We do have to talk about the Olympics
because it's been a few months. But wow, I still
think about that incredible gold medal game and I did
not play in it and score the winning goals.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
So I imagine every once.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
In a while, maybe every day, you get a quick
memory or a quick reminder, and do you still freak
out a little bit about it?

Speaker 5 (14:02):
Yeah? I do, not as much as my parents.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
I'd say, not to throw them under the bus, but
they'll start a lot of their mornings with overtime.

Speaker 1 (14:10):
Oh my god, that's so cute. They'll go back and
rewatch every day.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
They will.

Speaker 5 (14:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
So I'm happy it ended well because if they were rewatching,
my dad likes to rewatch the tapes.

Speaker 5 (14:22):
If it was a loss, that would have been a
lot tougher.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (14:26):
Yeah, I mean, it's really nice to know your parents
are proud. My parents are lawyers, and my dad the
amount of times they'll say, like, oh, it just came
up in a meeting.

Speaker 3 (14:32):
I'm like, did it?

Speaker 2 (14:33):
Dad? Did it?

Speaker 3 (14:34):
Somehow what I do for a living came up in
a meeting.

Speaker 1 (14:36):
I sincerely doubt it was the other person who brought
it up, but it's always nice to feel like they're
proud of you. I'm curious, so do your parents have
to watch the version with ads or you know, do
they have a DVRD so that they can skip through them?

Speaker 3 (14:47):
How did they watch?

Speaker 5 (14:48):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (14:49):
It's dvard Okay, good, good, Yeah, skip right to the
good part.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
Right to the good part.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
Speaking of the good part, the celebration, the media tour.
It was so fun watching y'all get your flower. What
was the best part for you of that?

Speaker 2 (15:02):
Probably right after, I mean just hanging out with all
the friends and family that made the trip over and
the whole team. I think we got three days together,
which is pretty awesome. We don't get to spend a
whole lot of time together throughout the year, so and
when we do, we're you know, we're competing, we're working
towards the end goal of winning a gold medal. So

(15:22):
to accomplish that and then just get the chance to
celebrate and hang out is really special.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
Tell me everything about Connor story, tell me everything about
Saturday Night Live. I'm obsessed. That was my dream job.
I've gotten to go see it twice. But you got
to be behind the scenes and like all of that.

Speaker 3 (15:38):
So what was that Like?

Speaker 2 (15:39):
Yeah, that was the pinch me moment where I was like,
what am I doing here?

Speaker 5 (15:44):
Really cool?

Speaker 2 (15:45):
Like he is one of the nicest people that I've
ever met, and to see all that goes in behind
the scenes, it's a totally different world than what we're
used to. And I think I was more nervous for
that than the Gold Medal game, getting up there and
live TV and like, I just hold I remember how
to read, I know when to deliver my lines. He
gave me like a nudge at one point to be like, okay,

(16:07):
you can go now.

Speaker 3 (16:08):
Yeah, yeah, you guys nailed it.

Speaker 1 (16:10):
I mean, I have to say my husband was cracking
up because he was in the room as I was
watching it live, and you know, the guys came out
and I was like, Ugh, the women should be there,
and then you guys came out and I was like,
oh my god, they're there. And then the lines were perfect,
the delivery was perfect, and then I was just like
furiously on social media like, oh my.

Speaker 3 (16:28):
God, they've nailed that. Whoever wrote that was perfect?

Speaker 1 (16:31):
Like did you get a chance to talk to any
of THETHNL writers that actually it seemed like they knew
exactly the note to hit.

Speaker 2 (16:38):
Yeah, they played it perfectly, really like brought everybody together
and like made it funny and light. And the cheer
that we got when we came out was crazy. Like
in dress rehearsals, I didn't realize even there was gonna
be a live audience for that one. Yeah, and when
we went out, the cheer was absurd. And I had

(16:58):
the first line after that, and I was like, when
do I go, Like they just kept cheering.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
Yeah, you got to wait for it to die down. Yeah,
that was my favorite part.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
I remember.

Speaker 1 (17:08):
I was like, Okay, writers knew the assignment, audience knew
the assignment, Like the audience was clued in enough to know,
like y'all deserved the big one.

Speaker 3 (17:16):
Oh that was so fun.

Speaker 1 (17:18):
Did you get a great text message or like a
DM from any celebrity about your goal that really surprised you?

Speaker 2 (17:24):
Not so much, I feel like a message, but there
was a few like things I was getting tagged in
that were just coming across my screen as banners like
Reese Witherspoon and Tom Brady tagged.

Speaker 5 (17:36):
Me in a post and I was like, what is
going on?

Speaker 3 (17:38):
Wow, that's so cool.

Speaker 1 (17:40):
Are you still working on the Flavor Flavor party in Vegas?

Speaker 3 (17:42):
Is that happening?

Speaker 2 (17:43):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (17:43):
I think so. He's been sending out some things. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:47):
If our team has the chance to get together as
a group, like I said, like we all go back
to like our own markets and colleges, so you don't
know like when your entire team is going to get
together again.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
If ever so, and with all the other women Olympians
would be so much fun. I'm definitely weaseling my way
into that.

Speaker 5 (18:04):
Yeah, I'm for sure going to be in so many others.
Everybody's like maybe there's extra.

Speaker 1 (18:09):
Yeah, I mean it's Vegas. How private can it be.
We'll find our way in.

Speaker 3 (18:13):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
You know you mentioned you know you have to leave
and get back to life, and in previous Olympics seasons
you haven't had a league to go back to. You know,
in twenty eighteen, you were still in college, but you'd
taken the season off to train with Team USA.

Speaker 3 (18:25):
In twenty twenty.

Speaker 1 (18:25):
Two, you were with the PWHPA, but there wasn't the
same kind of consistent competition. So what was it like
this time around to shift focus so quickly from this goal.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
This dream achieved back to the PWHL.

Speaker 2 (18:37):
Yeah, it's actually been really easy and really great, and honestly,
I think it's been like one of the best things
for our sport and for our league to sort of
have the impact that we did at the Olympics and
then people can come watch us the same players play
for our professional teams there are college teams and as players.
I know, Like I think we've felt it in the

(18:57):
buildings that we go into, just the amount of fans
that are in there, and we're selling out TD Garden,
we're selling out MSG and whatever other rings were playing in.
Like we feel the fans support, and I think we
got a lot more fans and a lot more viewers
just from you know, all that attention we garnered at
the Olympics and brought it back to the pro league.

(19:17):
So it's actually been like fun and easy and it's
nice to like come back and have meaningful hockey because
after the Olympics, like you said, it just kind of
like you're at such a high and then you just
like kind of go home and you're like, Okay, what
do I do now?

Speaker 1 (19:32):
Yeah, some athletes might like the chance to decompress, relax,
take a toll off their body, But there is something
to be said for getting right back into play and
not just sitting and ruminating on you know, that dream
being over, that cycle being over. So you get back
with the fleet. We're near in playoff time. Hell of
a season for your squad. Been so fun to watch,
maybe even surprising to some to be so successful without

(19:54):
former captain Hillary Knight, she was left unprotected, ended up
signing with the expansion Seattle Torrent.

Speaker 3 (19:59):
You've taken on the CA roll.

Speaker 1 (20:00):
How did you feel about filling such big shoes or
big skates?

Speaker 3 (20:04):
I should say, yeah, it's good. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (20:08):
I mean Hill and I have been friends and teammates
for like over ten years, and she's the face of
women's hockey and one of the best leaders that I've
gotten the chance to know and to learn from. So,
you know, to lose her along with like so many
others in the expansion. Our league is growing so fast
it's probably going to happen again. It's a tough part

(20:28):
of the sport and a sad part. But yeah, I
think coming into this year, a lot of people and
still now like didn't think we were going to be
where we're at. But for us, like at the beginning
of the season, this was always our goal is to
make playoffs and bring home a Walter Cup. And we've
never lost that belief in our locker room and since
training camp day one, that's what we've been working towards

(20:51):
and the voices in our room are the only ones
that matter to us. So yeah, just a fun group
to be a part of and really no egos on
the team and every but he's just gelling really well.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
What's your style as a leader as captain?

Speaker 2 (21:04):
Probably more actionable lead with my actions. I don't speak
too often. I would say I've.

Speaker 5 (21:10):
Definitely learned to speak more.

Speaker 2 (21:11):
And then for me, I feel like a big part
of it is like being a great teammate. I think
when everybody on the team knows that they're valuable and
they have a role and you can bring a group together,
those are the teams that I've been a part of
that we've done something special when everybody finds a way
to truly care about one another and because if you
do off the ice, you're going to be willing to

(21:32):
do anything on the ice for your teammates.

Speaker 1 (21:34):
Yeah, I mean, it's obviously more fun to win, But
I do feel like there's certain teams that early in
a season even you just see some magic there, the playfulness,
the camaraderie, the connection between everyone, and later on when
they win or at least have a great season, you're like, Oh,
there's something about them from the beginning that just like
felt right. And part of that is buy and from
the people all the way down at the end of
the bench that maybe aren't playing as often, which is

(21:56):
a great big job for the captain to keep everybody
involved of leadership you got to do. Coach this season,
Chris Sparr took over for Courtney Castle. What kind of
coaches he's what's the vibe?

Speaker 2 (22:06):
Yeah, he brings the energy from from day one, our
our whole coaching staff, Like it was evident that they
wanted us to play with pace and started in day
one of training camp. And I think he's just brought
out the best in our group. And you see it
like in our style of play and in our for
check and like we want to be fast and hard
on teams and want to We want to be really
hard to play against, and also like if somebody hits

(22:28):
one of our players or our goalie, you're going to
see five players in the mix, like we're going to
stick up for one another, and that comes from them.

Speaker 5 (22:36):
So yeah, it's been great to have him this year.

Speaker 3 (22:38):
What has been the biggest difference.

Speaker 1 (22:39):
You go far first season, but last year you missed
the playoffs and then you turn it around to battle
for the number one seed this season. What's the biggest
difference on the ice between last year and this year.

Speaker 2 (22:48):
I think just like our confidence as a group and
having more of like we want to attack and assert
ourselves and be hard to play against. Where I feel like,
I mean, we still rely on Aaron a lot.

Speaker 5 (23:00):
She's the best school in the world. How could you not.

Speaker 2 (23:03):
It's nice to have her back there, but you know,
trying to like get in on teams earlier and create
more offense as opposed to just sitting back.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
Yeah, you mentioned Aaron.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
You, Hillary and Aaron were the three original members of
this Fleet team. What can you say about her between
the pipes this year?

Speaker 2 (23:18):
Yeah? I mean, you guys have seen it at the
Olympics and so happy for her, like, we don't win
a gold medal without her, and you know the rest
of our goalie trio there, Gwen and Nave as well,
But like I really believe like she is the best
in the world and a smaller sized goalie, but like
her compete and her athleticism, you think you have her

(23:41):
beat and you never have her beat, and she wins
us a lot of hockey games. And it's funny because
like she has such a killer instinct. But then like
one of the most chill goalies I've ever met, Like
pre game, she's not like going crazy or has all
these rituals.

Speaker 5 (23:57):
She just is like hanging out.

Speaker 1 (23:59):
Yeah, she just gets fired up about Caesar salads. And
that's it exactly. We're recording this Friday afternoon. So you've
got one last regular season game tomorrow against the New
York Sirens. You're trailing the top seeded in Montreal Victire
by just one single point, so you've still got a
shot to secure the number one seed, in which case
you'd get to select your first round opponent. A fun
little quirk about the PWHL. So how much is the

(24:21):
team focused on that? How important does that number one
seed feel?

Speaker 2 (24:24):
I think For us, we're more so focused on, you know,
we want to feel good going into playoffs. We want
to have one of our best games and our best performances,
and obviously that would hopefully result in a win. But
as a group, like, we want to get to our
game quickly, and so you're going into playoffs, you're feeling
good and you have no doubt whoever we end up playing,
we end up playing, you're going to have to beat

(24:45):
the best teams to win a wall to cup at
the end. So to us, I feel like that doesn't
really matter. But focusing more so on, you know, how
we want to play and how we want to head into.

Speaker 3 (24:54):
Playoffs probably a good strategy.

Speaker 1 (24:55):
Because in both of the first two seasons of the league,
the number one seed has lost to the opponent that
they chose to play. First, Number one Toronto fell to
number three Minnesota and then last your number one Montreal
picked number four Ottawa and they lost. So are you
chalking that up to the power of bulletin board material?

Speaker 3 (25:12):
Why do you think that happens?

Speaker 5 (25:13):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (25:14):
I mean our league there is so much parody on
any given night, like you could see like a team
who's not even in playoffs could be you know, a
top seed team, but yeah, that's it. I guess it's
good bulletin board material. So I don't want to give
any material to anybody. We want to play just whoever.

Speaker 3 (25:31):
Is anybody who everyone's great. We love everyone.

Speaker 1 (25:35):
So as a top seeded team, you'll either be number
one or number two? How do you ensure that you
carry over your momentum from a great regular season into
the playoffs because we have seen those top seeds not
be able to do so.

Speaker 2 (25:46):
Yeah, I think for a lot of teams, like you
feel like you've done all of the work, but for us,
like playoffs is a fresh slate for everybody, like you're going.

Speaker 5 (25:56):
To get a whole new level. We found that in
year one.

Speaker 2 (26:00):
It just is more physical, it's faster, it's you know,
it's a stronger game. So I think just kind of like,
you know, relying on what we've built, but also knowing that,
like there's a whole nother level that we can take
it to and that other teams are willing to take
it to as well.

Speaker 1 (26:16):
I know the rest of the league and any fan
that isn't rocking a purple jersey would love for you
to unseat the two time defending champion Minnesota Frost. What
have you taken away from their ability to basically eke
into the postseason both years and then go on to
win from the bottom and back to back seasons.

Speaker 2 (26:33):
Yeah, they're a good team in the playoffs as you saw,
but just knowing them and playing with a lot of
them and against them, you know, obviously like they have
a lot of scoring power, They're very offensive. Their goaltending
is great as well, so you know they have all
the pieces. All these teams have all the pieces. It's
just like who can put it all together? And it's

(26:54):
going to take the entire group and not just we've
seen like in the past couple of years, like Minnesota
fourth line steps up big. It's going to take every
single person up and down the line up to win
a championship.

Speaker 1 (27:05):
A lot more fans will be tuning into the postseason,
maybe even some new fans checking it out because it's
the playoffs and the stakes are high. What would you
tell a newbie who's only watched a couple of Boston
Fleet games about your team as you were getting ready
for the postseason. What should they watch for? What are
you great at? Who are some of the players that
have really stepped up this season.

Speaker 5 (27:25):
Number one Aaron Frankel, the green Monster, if you will.

Speaker 2 (27:29):
That's what they call her. Frank's red hot, So watch
out for her. She always stands on her head. Haley
Win new defenceman, rookie defenseman, lighting it up this year.

Speaker 5 (27:40):
So fun to watch.

Speaker 1 (27:41):
Everyone remembers her from the brothers at the Olympics of course, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (27:45):
And her brothers as well. Look out for them in
the stands. They're probably wearing something crazy.

Speaker 1 (27:50):
I'm sure they'll be there, hopefully coordinated outfits again, right.

Speaker 2 (27:54):
Yeah, but just yeah, up and down, up and down
the lineup, and I think with our group, like you're
going to see some physicality and kind of that wolf
pack mentality of if somebody's going to get hit, we're
not afraid to get in the mix and get in
the scrums.

Speaker 1 (28:09):
Do you feel a difference at all in preparing for
PWHL playoffs where it's the best of five series versus
you know, NCAA or Olympics or places where it's that
one and done game.

Speaker 5 (28:18):
Yeah, it's definitely different.

Speaker 2 (28:20):
I mean, you got to be a team three times
to move on, and it's more of a long game
than you know, just a one off game where it
could go to either team. But in the end, I think,
like a lot of people feel in a longer series,
somehow the team that deserves to take it all is
going to because you have to be a team not

(28:41):
only once, but three times.

Speaker 1 (28:43):
Yeah, you know, we just had Casey O'Brien on the
show talking about the Sirens traditions and their.

Speaker 3 (28:47):
We Woo woo woo chant and all that.

Speaker 1 (28:49):
Are there any cool Fleet in game activations or maybe
fan traditions that folks might not know if they haven't
gotten out to a game yet.

Speaker 2 (28:55):
Shoot, Okay, I may be a tough one to ask.
I feel like I zone out during the game, Like I.

Speaker 5 (29:00):
Get on the bench and I just am not seen much.

Speaker 2 (29:02):
But what I do love seeing is the captain's hats,
Like we have, like the Sailors captain's hats that a
bunch of our fans wear. I think at the home
opener they were given out and there's like a funny
picture of like just all the fans you can kind
of see, and everybody's wearing a captain's hat.

Speaker 5 (29:22):
So just like a bunch of Sailors.

Speaker 1 (29:24):
I love that I've been to a lot of nautical
themed events, so I have a handful of those hats
in my costume closet.

Speaker 3 (29:30):
And yes, I do have an entire closet of costumes.

Speaker 1 (29:33):
And I will accept no judgment for that, only admiration.
So if I make it out to a Boston Fleet game,
I got to rock one of my many hats.

Speaker 3 (29:41):
I already know a fleet one.

Speaker 1 (29:42):
Yeah, I already know what the dress code is, I guess. Okay,
I have one last question for you, because I mentioned
at the beginning that as a kid, the stencil on
your wall said dream until your dreams come true. Now,
I'm pretty sure you've more than done that. I don't
even know if you could have dreamed as big as
you've achieved. What would the stencil on your wall say today?

Speaker 3 (30:00):
What's the new goal?

Speaker 5 (30:02):
Ah, walter Cup? Right now, I think that's at the forefront.

Speaker 1 (30:07):
Okay, the new stencil says walter Cup. Is your childhood
bedroom still intact? And is that still on the wall?

Speaker 5 (30:12):
It is? Yeah.

Speaker 2 (30:13):
I don't know how that got out. I don't know
who shared that one. I had to have been like
my mom or something.

Speaker 1 (30:18):
Okay, I would like a photo of that, please, I
would like you, next time you're back home, or you know,
before or after your parents' latest rewatch of overtime, have
them go up and snap a shot of that stencil,
because that's pretty incredible.

Speaker 3 (30:30):
I love that.

Speaker 5 (30:31):
I will. It's above my twin bed, that's still there.

Speaker 3 (30:34):
Amazing.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
Well, thank you so much for making some time for us.
Good luck in the postseason and hopefully that Walter Cup
dream is achieved.

Speaker 5 (30:42):
