Let's see, we have Park first, so I think Caitlin
West was the top qualifier, who's super tech. Then we
have Nina Yee, who's not been in any world skate
events before, or at least not not in the last
year or so. And then Kate Kuno, who I actually
haven't met yet, so it's another young up and comer.

And then on the street side we have Kylie Frank,
Mariah and a new girl named Taylor Burnett. So yeah, yeah,
that's that's about all that's new with me at this point.

Oh yes, Jess went up to O High for the weekend.
It was super nice, just Betty and I. I hadn't
been up there in like probably ten years, and we
actually did go to the skate park and it was
like Betty's kind of like first time seeing me skateboard.

Hell yeah, she's like, wait, I'm dating a skateboarder.

I like needed to know that she was like in
it for me, you know, and not the skating.

How was the experience of having the girlfriend at the
new Ohi skate park.

I mean, I get it. I get why people bring
their girlfriends to skate parks. It's very fun, very cool.

I'm just recovering from, you know, trying to get through
all the fan mail about getting third place in the
thirty and over at Wheels of Fortune. It's been a
lot of pressure, like a lot of dms, and I'm
just trying to keep I like I Nora, I understand
what it's like being a celebrity now because getting that
third place spots really catapulted me up.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
And it's the pressure really Oh. I mean think I
didn't say bye to anybody. I just okay, walked right
out of out of Wheels of Fortune. I was like,
all right, skated heat won, fell, didn't land one trick
I'm out there was like, no way.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
I'm gonna have to note I did not see your
miller flip at all anywhere in the cony.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
I knew that was going to comic flip.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
I knew that was going to come up on the pod.

Look, I was focused on my run at that moment there,
and the Miller flip just like wasn't fitting into the
aesthetic that I was trying to pull, Ashley. So I
just I didn't do it. It was for aesthetic reasons,
not because it would have looked silly. You had one
job and it was not to get third place. Granted, well,

women's skateboarding is just like thriving.

In this last week, so much has come out, So

Get right to it, Ruby Lily today, tomorrow, Forever pro part.
She was on the podcast last week, which if you
haven't had a chance to listen to, please do. It
was such an awesome episode. There's so much about Ruby
that just is incredible in her story. I'm not going
to tell it all here because you just tune back
into the pod and check it out. Her part was

out of control. I loved the song how sick is
it to skate to big Thief Adrian Linker and then
put down like such a gnarly, gnarly part. I've watched
it three times, not enough, and each time I like
leave with this relief of being like, damn, I was
so good. Instead of just talking about the idea of good.

What did you guys like about the part? I just
thought it was insane.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
I mean, especially coming off her part that came out
in September for the Monster video, because that was gnarly.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
But then I.

Would just say, like, yeah, she's a top dog right now,
Like it's just so refreshing, I think to see someone
young and hungry and like who's such a skate rack
getting to film and also getting to like put their
taste on it and it doesn't feel like it's been
filtered through some like dude skate lens, like just like

having her skate to that song, you know, and that
felt very impactful and it made me want to go skate.

It's also just so crazy.

She makes Washington Street look like a miniature put putt
golf course, like it's a playground.

No, on that point that Ruby goes to, like the
biggest obstacles like her enders are the Washington Street cradle
from the Monster video where she does that craile slide,
and then she goes to Kona at the end of
the Foundation video and does that backside nose pick on
COONa And I don't know, like I any you guys
have ever been to that ConA thing. But it's like
eleven feet halt like tie like It's like it's insane, right.

It's not even something like I would ever consider like
attempting to get to the top two. But it's I
also think one thing that we kind of forget about
with these skaters who are coming from like being really
transition heavy. There is so much out there to skate
if you are willing to push yourself and if you're
willing to like fine creative spots or fine stuff like

Ruby has which has like legacy to it, like Washington
Street has legacy. ConA has even crazier legacy.

But I just.

Think, you know, guys are getting enders on those things.

So like for Ruby to go and do that is really.

Like telling of just like again how tuned in she
is and how gnarly she is and kind of the
ode she's putting back into transition skating and stuff super sick.

It's like really inspiring. I also was like impressed with her,
Like the spots she wander there were such tight transitions
to like Channel Street is so gnarly, like you don't
see you don't see many gnarly tricks them there, and
just think she did like a slob plant the tail off,
that weird offset thing, and it was Yeah that in
the backyard pool clips were also just as hectic. It

was really cool to see.

I mean she's nose grinding backyard pools. Yeah, that's such
a crazy thing just to like have in your pocket.

With like a little like Bambi smile the entire time
Like yeah, no big deal. And I just love too
that the the video as a whole is such a
working class skate video.

The comments for Ruby Lilly were so sick.

It was like every other comment in the video was
what a new era for us to arrive in, where
it wasn't just insulting comments, it was just shout out
Ruby Lily the entire time.

So and also Darnell, Jesse Darnell to like what you're
just saying about how they're working class skaters, like Jesse
Darnell works at Woodward and then skated and like film
this entire Like she opened up the video, the Foundation
video and then backside flipping huge sets backside, big spinning
huge sets too, like.

Yeah, we're so not board side and just it's like
I was like, was that switch because because she's so
turned around, not even looking where she's going, So yeah,

I just feel like the energy around it was really great.
Obviously Lao being there and she's all fired up, but
I just think like trick selection and spot selection the

All new footage, I was like, wait, why didn't I

So that was like obviously really exciting because Lake Ruby
just like putting out so much, so much footage. So yeah,

get to have so much to enjoy. And I'm telling
you that last last trick, Manual to flip Nolly Nolly

flip or Nolly heel down the stairs was insane.

Lao has the strongest front ankle of anue skater I've
ever seen, but she can hold and flip in like
Nolly flips, Nolly holds like nose grinds everything like that too.
She seems like unafraid to ever roll her ankle. The
last one of the last tricks was that Alie.

That's like the it's a huge Ollie uh, this like
crazy abandoned pool. And then I got some intel at
the premiere that that's just one of three parts Loo
was dropping this year.

Yeah, because I there was footage there's like spots that
we had been to together, and I was kind of like, oh,
she has more because there's clips in there that aren't
in there.

You know what I'm saying, so insane, it's so exciting.

We'll be in the running for sure this November, Yeah,

like so much respect for any skateboarder in San Francisco.
You're dealing with just the worst of elements, the city itself,
the terrain, the wind, the just like people of all

the things that happen when you're on a skate trip
in SF. So to put out a part here is
always like a total feat and you just know the
work that went into it.

least it's Rome though, right like now you've got Rome dialed,
it's just going to be hot. That's the main challenge
in Rome is how hot. It's like the hottest place

going to be cooking. But yeah, we know the drill.

back in the day, like you used to have.

how this league is going to roll out city skate
teams with BMX in the mix.

So, Yeah, it'll be interesting to see at the end
of June how this thing unfolds and what's happening next MABI.

Are a lot of the skaters going straight into X
Games after Rome, Yeah, I think the ones that are involved,
for sure. I think it's really quickly after. I think
it's the end of the same week a street.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
Yeah, it's gonna be a busy for those that are
on the competition circuit. It's like the most amount of demands,
which is why it's gonna be a really fascinating year
with this much on the calendar and seeing how people
can maintain their status in the rankings, their body, their
mental health, and just.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
The pressure of this.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
So it's great to see people able to skate, work
and do the damn thing, but definitely not a lot
of breaks.
Speaker 5 (19:55):
So I did record a video with World Skate about
the ranking system too and how it's working. So Rome
is the first kickoff for the LA twenty eight ranking system.
It's an eighteen month rolling ranking. This is gonna be
the first scores that skaters can put on the board
in their campaign to get to LA twenty eight, So
it's a really important starting point. And every eighteen months,
the old scores expire and the new scores fill in too,
(20:18):
so you'll start to see a lot of ranking swappings happening,
especially towards the back half of twenty six.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
I'm so glad I don't have to do this that
I live not doing contests, because I would have a
heart attack and probably jump off a cliff on purpose
if I had to do skate contests because I can't.
Oh God, baby and train that baby from this to contests.

Make on the Monday there's no Monday.

Your best trick.

You can have a baby, yeah, best trick and have
a baby that could do a best trick.

Did you guys see the Street League next Gen slide
comparison of like the women's and men's division, Like speaking
of babies doing best trick, Like the women's field was
so young. It was like skaters under nineteen that have
won every stop this season and it's like eighty three
percent of the total podiums. And the women's field was

significantly bigger than the men's. It was so much younger.
It was like ten women that were from nineteen to
the youngest age being sixteen, and then the men's field
was I think only six and the ages were much higher.
And it just really like speaks to the opportunity anra
that you have to have a baby and do.
Speaker 3 (21:36):
Best trick and show up in these events and for
you unity, the opportunity is big.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
But also on the business side, it's just like again
like the investment in women's skateboarding is just so here
and it's showing in real time that if you create events,
you create a pathway and an opportunity, all of these
people will come out of the woodwork and participate in it,
and so that means more years to come for those skateboarders,
(22:04):
more audience growth, which means more business, and just like
more opportunities. After these young skaters like reach their apex
of competitive skateboarding, they're still going to have this actor
career in filming video parts hopefully and staying within the industry.
And I think it's like the first ever generation raised
entirely inside the post Olympic announcement, and there are a

correlating thing happening here that everyone's like the Olympics day out
of you for skateboarding, and I'm like, look at the data,
look at the stats, look at the age.

So it is an interesting time.

I want to add to this and bring it to
a positive note on the being a mother in Stutch.
Congratulations to Carissa Moore for winning the New Zealand Pro.
So if anybody knows Carisa Moore is a pro surfer,
she is probably like thirty three years young and she's
a new mom and she just got back on tour

this year and he's probably the first.

Mom to win.

No no, no, no, listen, Al, I'm sorry, thank you

She's Yeah, she's like the first mom to win since
Lisa Anderson. And I don't know what year that would
have been, but it's pretty cool too. I think see
that happening in women's sports, especially in surfing. It's so
so demanding and if anybody can do it, it's Carissa. She's
an Olympic gold medalist, she's a multi multi world champion.

But yeah, that just like got me so stoked. They
chaired her up the beach with her daughter and I
was just like kind of crying.

How special was it when she went and talked to
her competitor too, and was like, oh, yeah, you have
so many years to go.

I Sawyer Limblad just recently, because she's done it twice.

I mean, she's just I.

Feel like she's like, girl, you're you're gonna come for
me one day piece and then she puts the metal
on and she walks away.

I think I think she's just like tuned in and
I think she knows her value when it comes to,
you know, good sportsmanship and being able to interact. And
everyone's seen her come up from the time she was
like eleven and twelve beating guys like John John Florence
and all those kids in contests and now she's yeah,

entered motherhood, but is not not lost any performance ability.
We love to see it and it's just the cutest things.

She's a leader. I mean, that's what leaders do. They
build up the people coming behind them. And I think
it's classy, classy and nice to see.

Yeah, And I think on the skate side, Gaby Mazetto
is a mom too and is competing right now and
trying to get into the Olympics.

She was in the Olympics.

So bringing that incredible of a group to a place
for as many days as they did, I know that

use her resources and Red Bull behind her probably going

to showcase a really incredible part. So it will be
interesting to see all of those elements in the mix
and how people are able to present their skateboarding and
who they are.

Well, let's give some advice to listeners or to young skaters. Right,
there's a way in which there's ladders that you can climb.
In my days of working in hard gooods like Ashley too,
I would put out a video with Crocs or something
like that too. I would hit up the shoe sponsors
and other people for a little bit of money to
help elevate this writer on a smaller brand, on a
hard goods brand, like a welcome video.
Speaker 4 (36:19):
Whatever. They get a little bit of money from.
Speaker 5 (36:21):
Everybody gets the assets, we get to blast out the image.
It's kind of like this working project together to get
this skater elevated. Now, is that skater getting paid on
the first ground floor of the hard goods video. No,
they're just getting the opportunity to blow up and see more.
And I feel like the group project of it, which
is starting from the bottom and now we're here kind
of thing too. You're in the ASEX video, but you
started out a shop video and you worked your way
(36:42):
up there. Maybe there's a disconnect that needs to be addressed,
But I do think that you do have to start somewhere.
You have to start taking a yes, going on the
road trip, getting some clips in this thing, and eventually
that system will lead to you having the infrastructure that
you're talking about Ashley, with money and more investment and
more of a safety net for your career. But I mean,
Nora had to climb it, like everybody had to climb it.

You know, it does take those steps.

Shoe brand is different than hard gooods, So that's all
I'm trying to say. Being sure on a shoe brand
you should be treated with like payment, and hard goods
is a bit more of that ladder climb into the
shoe brand contract totally.

I just think there's a lot of time that gets
spent too with like you have to test out if
these people are like going to fit in with the team.
You got to test out what they look like after
a year of going on trips, and like, there's so
much that goes into it. So I think for kids
to be happy and stoked that they're getting to go

per Dium on a trip and sometimes that is enough
for a little bit, especially if you're under twenty, right, Like, yeah,
that's huge, But I just think I I was laughing
with somebody at a shop who's a shop owner, and
they're like, Dude, I have kids who come in and
in like I see them having money to go to

the bar, and I'm seeing them having money to do
this and that, but they want free grit.

They want for you this, they.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
Like everything's expected to be this like flow to pro
thing of like, and it's just funny because you're like,
I think some of the money has to be going
back instead.
Speaker 3 (38:22):
Of it's just the expectations of gear and freedom. Free
swag is a tough I think that's like a really tough.

Road.

Yeah, it sucks because there's no like one. There's no
structure that's universal in our industry. It's all these different
fragmented sort of ways of working depending on the level
of the company or the brand.

I think on this pod, though, we should address some
of these things and give out this information as much
you know your lived at totally.

This is a really valid.

Totally but every I think, like my biggest one that
I could say is like, if you are especially with
the shoober, Like if you're getting flown somewhere, just run
it up, just be like super stoked and try to
get along with the team and have fun and.

Skate your hardests.

The criteria that each brand is using to judge by
who gets paid and like who gets paid what. It's
very much up to like a few individuals. It's not
like a collective agreement too. But as long as we
kind of can create spaces and continue to champion the
people that we believe deserve this too, and continue to
like share our knowledge, foster new talent. Have hire women.

We say this all the time. Hire more women in
those roles. There will be a women for more I know,
hire women basically, right yeah, right now, it's like really slim.
I mean we know it, Like there's not many women
working at these bigger brands that have this control, and
therefore there's not many people advocating for you know, our
group in the room.

on the competition circuit. It's like the most amount of demands,
which is why it's gonna be a really fascinating year
with this much on the calendar and seeing how people
can maintain their status in the rankings, their body, their
mental health, and just.

The pressure of this.

So it's great to see people able to skate, work
and do the damn thing, but definitely not a lot
of breaks.

So I did record a video with World Skate about
the ranking system too and how it's working. So Rome
is the first kickoff for the LA twenty eight ranking system.
It's an eighteen month rolling ranking. This is gonna be
the first scores that skaters can put on the board
in their campaign to get to LA twenty eight, So
it's a really important starting point. And every eighteen months,
the old scores expire and the new scores fill in too,

so you'll start to see a lot of ranking swappings happening,
especially towards the back half of twenty six.

I'm so glad I don't have to do this that
I live not doing contests, because I would have a
heart attack and probably jump off a cliff on purpose

comparison of like the women's and men's division, Like speaking
of babies doing best trick, Like the women's field was
so young. It was like skaters under nineteen that have
won every stop this season and it's like eighty three
percent of the total podiums. And the women's field was

significantly bigger than the men's. It was so much younger.
It was like ten women that were from nineteen to
the youngest age being sixteen, and then the men's field
was I think only six and the ages were much higher.
And it just really like speaks to the opportunity anra
that you have to have a baby and do.

Best trick and show up in these events and for
you unity, the opportunity is big.

But also on the business side, it's just like again
like the investment in women's skateboarding is just so here
and it's showing in real time that if you create events,
you create a pathway and an opportunity, all of these
people will come out of the woodwork and participate in it,
and so that means more years to come for those skateboarders,

more audience growth, which means more business, and just like
more opportunities. After these young skaters like reach their apex
of competitive skateboarding, they're still going to have this actor
career in filming video parts hopefully and staying within the industry.
And I think it's like the first ever generation raised
entirely inside the post Olympic announcement, and there are a

correlating thing happening here that everyone's like the Olympics day out
of you for skateboarding, and I'm like, look at the data,
look at the stats, look at the age.

Also, I'm really interested to see like some of these
brands have more money than other brands, so they get
to go on better trips, better spots, better trick selections.
The one thing I am kind of curious is, like
the A six crew girl, I'm from Portland, there are
no street spots out there.

I'm so sorry, but it's just not there.

So bringing that incredible of a group to a place
for as many days as they did, I know that
it was probably a really great like bonding trip and
an amazing Northwest experience. But in terms of like how
the footage is going to showcase their skateboarding, probably is
going to be a missed opportunity. Klokkevel being able to
use her resources and Red Bull behind her probably going

to showcase a really incredible part. So it will be
interesting to see all of those elements in the mix
and how people are able to present their skateboarding and
who they are.

Where would you want to see an A six video filmed.

Anywhere but Portland, Oregon?

And yes, to the Portland skaters out there, I love
you all, like I'm cut from that cloth and like
appreciate the community. I just think like getting those girls
out to places that have better materials to skate, better
street furniture, better ground. You're going to see how insanely
talented they are. You've got a great filmer, you've got

great skaters. Put them in the right places for it.
And I think money ultimately is like where it gets complicated.
But they all were flown in there, so fly.

Them somewhere cheaper.

Secret Len's supposed to have a part in that too.

I love Secret, and I love Secret is like so
sick with her, like gen Z, She's like making her

Like she's just one of those kids. Like I used
to the house I lived. It used to be right

next to a high school in Encinitas, and the kids
were just like the most intimidating, Like I would be
driving my car at three pm and I'm like trying
not to make eye contact with any of the teenagers
because they're like so sick and intimidating and like styled out.

Well, let's give some advice to listeners or to young skaters. Right,
there's a way in which there's ladders that you can climb.
In my days of working in hard gooods like Ashley too,
I would put out a video with Crocs or something
like that too. I would hit up the shoe sponsors
and other people for a little bit of money to
help elevate this writer on a smaller brand, on a
hard goods brand, like a welcome video.
Speaker 4 (36:19):
Whatever. They get a little bit of money from.
Speaker 5 (36:21):
Everybody gets the assets, we get to blast out the image.
It's kind of like this working project together to get
this skater elevated. Now, is that skater getting paid on
the first ground floor of the hard goods video. No,
they're just getting the opportunity to blow up and see more.
And I feel like the group project of it, which
is starting from the bottom and now we're here kind
of thing too. You're in the ASEX video, but you
started out a shop video and you worked your way
(36:42):
up there. Maybe there's a disconnect that needs to be addressed,
But I do think that you do have to start somewhere.
You have to start taking a yes, going on the
road trip, getting some clips in this thing, and eventually
that system will lead to you having the infrastructure that
you're talking about Ashley, with money and more investment and
more of a safety net for your career. But I mean,
Nora had to climb it, like everybody had to climb it.
Speaker 4 (37:04):
You know, it does take those steps.
Speaker 2 (37:07):
Shoe brand is different than hard gooods, So that's all
I'm trying to say. Being sure on a shoe brand
you should be treated with like payment, and hard goods
is a bit more of that ladder climb into the
shoe brand contract totally.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
I just think there's a lot of time that gets
spent too with like you have to test out if
these people are like going to fit in with the team.
You got to test out what they look like after
a year of going on trips, and like, there's so
much that goes into it. So I think for kids
to be happy and stoked that they're getting to go
(37:41):
per Dium on a trip and sometimes that is enough
for a little bit, especially if you're under twenty, right, Like, yeah,
that's huge, But I just think I I was laughing
with somebody at a shop who's a shop owner, and
they're like, Dude, I have kids who come in and
in like I see them having money to go to
(38:04):
the bar, and I'm seeing them having money to do
this and that, but they want free grit.
Speaker 3 (38:07):
They want for you this, they.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
Like everything's expected to be this like flow to pro
thing of like, and it's just funny because you're like,
I think some of the money has to be going
back instead.
Speaker 3 (38:22):
Of it's just the expectations of gear and freedom. Free
swag is a tough I think that's like a really tough.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
Road.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
Yeah, it sucks because there's no like one. There's no
structure that's universal in our industry. It's all these different
fragmented sort of ways of working depending on the level
of the company or the brand.
Speaker 5 (38:47):
I think on this pod, though, we should address some
of these things and give out this information as much
you know your lived at totally.
Speaker 4 (38:51):
This is a really valid.
Speaker 1 (38:52):
Totally but every I think, like my biggest one that
I could say is like, if you are especially with
the shoober, Like if you're getting flown somewhere, just run
it up, just be like super stoked and try to
get along with the team and have fun and.
Speaker 3 (39:11):
Skate your hardests.
Speaker 5 (39:12):
The criteria that each brand is using to judge by
who gets paid and like who gets paid what. It's
very much up to like a few individuals. It's not
like a collective agreement too. But as long as we
kind of can create spaces and continue to champion the
people that we believe deserve this too, and continue to
like share our knowledge, foster new talent. Have hire women.
(39:35):
We say this all the time. Hire more women in
those roles. There will be a women for more I know,
hire women basically, right yeah, right now, it's like really slim.
I mean we know it, Like there's not many women
working at these bigger brands that have this control, and
therefore there's not many people advocating for you know, our
group in the room.
