right back up where we left off, and the entire
series had been completed without me.

We were watching the show. It's incredible. Congratulations on the
massive show and massive success. Got through about episode four,
maybe five before, and we left the next morning.

to just recording, and came back was like, cool, let's
pick up where we left often that series had been
completed without me.

We were very excited to have you on the pod.
The show is a massive success obviously and globally, you know,
a cultural kind of phenomenon. When did you first hear

about the show being developed into series and when when
did you get the role? Give us the whole backstory.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
I heard about it like from my team, I want
to say, like last February or something like that, and
I wasn't. I was like, I knew of the books,
but I didn't know what the whole thing was about.
I didn't know what book.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Talk was a lout of hockey.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
Yeah, and this was also pre he did rival Ry,
So I was like, hockey.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
You know, are you a hockey fan?
Speaker 2 (04:21):
I am, because you know, I'm from Dallas, which actually
has a big hockey shadow culture.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
I was born in Dallas. You were, I was, yeah,
Oh my god, for we moved back when I don't know,
in twenty two thousand and eight. Okay, our parents went
to school there together and then they moved back to
actually work at that school. No, they were to Bible College,
Old Cross for the Nations perfect do you know what
me too?

No, anyway, the Dallas Stars. Yeah. I don't know why
hockey's big in Dallas.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
But it is so yeah, so Vega, it's hot.

I don't know people like I think it's something to

And then like North Carolina did well this year or Carolina, Yes,
the Hurricanes, the Hurricane, which feels like an inappropriate name
to me. That's like insensitive, really insensitive.

Yeah, your team reaches out, they tell you, hey, this
is this project being developed a prime and and was
it always Ali that you were you were after? No?
Speaker 2 (05:18):
So okay, well it was always Ali that I was after.
Originally I auditioned for Hannah and I was like, this
just doesn't like makes sense to me. And they were like, no, no, no,
we agree, and like the casting team and the producers
also agree. But they were only casting or they were
only reading Hannahs and Garretts at the time, so they
were like, you just have to tape for this, and like,
trust us, they're going to see you for Ali afterwards.
(05:40):
And I was like all right, So I did it
and then they were right.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
They were right. We love the team's right.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
I love when the team is right. And yeah, then
I did like callbacks for Ali, cam Reid for Ali
and it all just came together.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Yeah.

How long was the process from like actual audition to
like beginning of production? Was it like a pretty long time.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Or I want to say first audition and was like
early February and then we started shooting end of May.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
It's pretty fast. That's great.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
What do you think that's fast? Okay, So, like in
my experience, it's always been like I booked something and
then two weeks later I have to go shoot. So
there was this really crazy period of time where I
was like, oh, I've had it before I book something
in the next day.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
That's intense. Yeah, what was that? Which was that? It was?
Speaker 2 (06:27):
It was an American girl doll movie. When I was.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
We have a lot of them in this house, Ken
Kevin has that a huge castle. I have like the
multi family house in the other room.

Do you have the horse? I had the American girl
doll horse.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
We did at one point and then the hair gave
up my daughter like a breakout like rash, and so we.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Got rid of the horse. What was she doing just
playing with it?

Okay, sure you guys speaking of horses, you ride horses.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Right, I do. I do ride horses.

Did you ride competitively?

You could say that just does that mean you just
say that meaning like you did that because just taking
you would ride faster than that.

No, like like this like the bar and I would
ride at would like host events shows, Yeah, and I
would show there, but I never traveled. I was supposed
to travel one time for a show, and then my
horse went lamb and had a problem, and so then
I was riding like one of the other horses, like
one of my trainer's horses, and he was very different

and I like didn't fall off of him. No, I
did fall off of him.

Yeah.

It was frightening, and I hurt myself, so I couldn't
do it.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
Nick also fell off a horse and hurt himself. Ill
horse twice.

Tell me both chores, they're not that exciting. Both were
on a set and basically there was a camera that
moved into you mean, they're not excited that. This is crazy. Sorry,
if you want me to on a production, I can't
see which one because my attorneys told me not to.
They didn't actually I was, okay, sure it was.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Your lawyers didn't tell me not to say.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
That's true.

Anyway, I'm on the set of this movie and the
camera came in in the way of the horse's eye
line and it got spooked out and it reared up
and threw me off. And I had these these boots
on that were that were not riding boots, but it was,
you know, for the character, and that really thick, so
like it basically got stuck in the dragged. It dragged
me for like maybe ten yards.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
That's crazy.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
It was intense, and I was like, I don't really
want to do this anymore. I don't want to.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
That happened times, I don't The.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Other one was a different thing, and it just reared
up and it was I was riding the horse without
a saddle for the scene, and then it I landed
on the kind of spy of the horse. Different movie.

So you grew up in Dallas. You moved to La
Win twenty seventeen. Twenty seventeen, you went to school out here.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
I went to UCLA.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
What did you study at UCLA?
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Philosophy.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Wow, yeah, that's cool, amazing that comes in handy. I'm sure, yeah,
I get very philosophical, do you when.

You're to help with your character development?
Speaker 2 (09:18):
But you know what I think it does. You know,
I think I've told myself that it does, but that
might be like I.

Think it would just me break start someone's you know,
thinking and character and goals and ideas.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Yeah, well I get that, I guess. Yeah. I went
to school originally for political science and that lasted truly,
like twenty minutes. Then I was like I can't do
this anymore. And then I tried to get into the
film school. I was shooting a movie at the time
when like all the exams and stuff were happening, and
I was trying to get extensions and stuff, and they
were like no. I was like, okay, but here's like
(09:53):
I'm actually doing what we're trying to do. They were like,
I'm literally doing the thing that I was like, I'm
literally doing the thing that I'm like asking you to
help me with. They like it.

So I was like, fine, and it's led you to
this moment now where you have this massive hit. How
like it's not the right way to frame the question
to say, how does it feel? But going from that
phone call in February, you're on set by May. Did
you think you know the first week or two while
you're on set, Oh, this is going to be something
that really connects and people are going to love these
characters and fall in love with the world, And or
(10:23):
was it just a really fun job. It's always amazing
to have a job, to have a gig to be doing,
but to have one that becomes something that is, you know,
blown up in the way it has.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Yeah, I think we always knew, just based on how
much like attention was being given to it already online,
we always knew that it was going to be somewhat successful.
We had literally no idea that it would become what
it's become. And we were just having fun last year,
(10:52):
like we truly all of us are like the best
of friends, and we were just hanging out in Vancouver
for five months and having a great time and like
awesome kind of having our own little college experience and
it was just great. And then yeah, like we went
and did press and we were just like who knows, Like,
who knows? This is going to be so fun? Like
maybe we'll go back and and yeah, and it's just

been like so crazy. I feel like I haven't taken
a breath.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
Yeah, I'm sure it's something like approaching forty million views
in the first like twelve days, which is completely ine.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Like I don't even know what that means.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
She's a lot, Yeah, yeah, a huge, But I've heard
just back to the cast mates, you guys are genuinely close.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
We're genuinely so close.
Speaker 1 (11:35):

One of them is off campus Brazil. I think of Brazil,

And then we went to Brazil and then all of
our dms were like no, no, no, no, no, come to
Rio because we went to sell Polo and I was like, okay,
we can't get specific.

I actually think we were. We were in Soapollo around
the same time. We were just there on tour and
I think we we we nearly cross paths with the
off campus. I think we did ships in the Night,
Ships of the Night, and it's an incredibly passionate fan base.

It would make sense that that they would gravit gravitate
towards something like this where there's a great romantic angle.
There's obviously a lot of physical and emotional things happening
as well. I assume you've watched the whole series or
have you? Have you not?
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Yeah, I've seen it.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
I'm I'm working through it right now. I'm very excited.
We just the first couple some steamy scenes in the show. Sure, obviously,
but it seems like giving the nature of the fact
that you guys are all friendly, it's a good environment
on set that it's like safe and everyone feels like
they can just have fun and stay in the moment
and being the character.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Yeah, and also like, I don't know if we've worked
with intimacy coordinators of course lately, but they're very like
it's a whole thing. There's like writers and contracts and stuff,
and they've been really great at like choreographing the fuck
out of it and love like it's been really awesome
and they've just made us so comfortable. And yeah, honestly,
like all of our intimacy stuff last season didn't really
(13:35):
start happening until about halfway through, and so we had
the chance to like build the rapport and the friendship
and the trust and whatnot.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
So it's never felt strange. That's great to hear at all.
We love intimacy coordinators. We shut out, thank you for that.
But season two is going to focus more on on
alian in Dean's relationships, right, that's right, Yeah, Okay, that's
very exciting. The fans are very excited about this.

I'm very excited about this.

Any insight, you're probably not a lot and that's okay, I'm.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
Not allot my lawyer toy on all of those.

of the book and kind of made it.

Same as like season one, you know, season one didn't
like exactly follow the books. So yeah, well there's like
some new stuff, some fun, some fun, new little things
that we're adding in.

I'm sure as each of you have sort of really
taken on these characters and gotten to know them even better.
Of of course the first season and the second the writers
are even crafting it more specifically to the way in
which you're portraying these characters, and that's a fun thing
to see kind of come.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
To life and also like to us as the actors too.
A lot of us are like very similar to our
characters and in specific ways, and it's been really cool
to see how they write our voices into the show
and like our our skills and like our things as people,
which is really cool. Like, you know, getting to do
a second season of a show and have the writers

really know you is.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
Like totally so unique.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
How do you feel like your character matches your personal
your personality?
Speaker 2 (14:58):
My personality I've been saying, Ali is just me when
I've like had the best day ever in maybe like
five Red Bulls, but like generally generally were very similar,
pure just like energy joy, it's like Christmas morning every day.
Speaker 1 (15:14):
Have you ever had five Red Bulls?
Speaker 2 (15:15):
I did, Oh my god, two days ago on stet
I like, in the span of six hours had a coffee,
a cold brew, and two of like the tall Boy
Red Bulls and a pseudo fed what. Yeah, because the
allergies were getting me and I literally was like I
think I'm gonna die.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
Yeah, that sounds like that's a whole journey you just
went on.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Yeah, and that was like two pm.

we were there. We filmed the movie. It's the one

So you mentioned that you're you're similar to your character
Ali in some ways. Is there a like a person
in your life who sort of embodies from the characteristics
that Hannah has where you have that same kind of connection.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Well, okay, So when I was doing the the Hannah
Ali work, I weirdly was I'm like that of the
Hannah to one of my best friends, Kiara. She's just
like so full of life and has so much inner
g and has this insane balance of being like the
hype man and also like the person that you want

to talk to when you're going through something. So that like,
I'm the Hannah in most of my friendship and relationships.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
Love that. Yeah, have you known Kiara for a long time.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
I've known Kiara since I moved here, since I moved
to LA.
Speaker 1 (17:22):
Was it tough moving from Dallas and having that friend
group there, I'm sure, and your childhood and teens and
then getting to LA and sort of like kind of
starting over essentially new new career path and friends.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
And I had just finished shooting a kids show.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Also in the Cove and the American American Girl Doll.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
No, it was called Project i'mc Squared and we did
see seasons three seasons. Actually a lot of those girls
lived in LA and so when I moved here and
then like a lot of the people that like worked
on the on the show also lived here and they
became very familiar and kind of like took me in,
like I would stay with them, stay at their homes
when I was like homesick and scared. So no, it

really wasn't a huge adjustment. And I had already been
flying back and forth between here in Dallas so much
as a child. But it was like, I really do
not have example.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
That's so nice. It's great, it can be U be
a wild thing to to not only move states, but
then to be jumping into a new career path and
to have that you know, balance from those those folks
that you worked up with in Vancouver is so nice.
And yeah, you live in LA now or Vancouver. I
guess for a lot of the year.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
I don't actually live anywhere right now.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
That's such an amazing thing.

But that means in the winter it's like terrible winters.

This January was tough. It was about three weeks of rain.
It happens, fine. That's why we get all those amazing
brit rock bands because they can be sad and they
write good songs.

So obviously with the success of a show like this,
there's there's a lot of interest in personal life and
you know, various stages in our life and career we've
we've kind of gone through that and it's an interesting
thing to navigate. How's it been last couple of weeks
months of navigating that aspect of you know, the amazing
part of getting to do what we all do is

that you have these amazing opportunities, but it does come
with some extra interest in these areas of your life.
How's that been to navigate?
Speaker 2 (20:59):
I think for all of us, it's just been really interesting.
It's something that like you think you understand, but you
don't until you're experiencing it and really understanding that, like
people will find you on the street or like find
your parents Facebook pages or like it's been strange, but
I mean Amazon's been really supportive and helpful.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
So it's we love Amazon. Ye shout out Amazon, and
and your friend group and stuff QR being more of
than I'm sure, and also the cast members you're all
going through the same time kind of it's and that's
what I'm.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
So grateful for. I can't imagine being in this situation
without like six other people that are going through the
exact same thing, you know what I mean, Like.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
That everybody and three group texts.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
Yeah, we that we can just cycle through when someone's
being anoying.

We have that within our family.

we agree, and like the casting team and the producers
also agree. But they were only casting or they were
only reading Hannahs and Garretts at the time, so they
were like, you just have to tape for this, and like,
trust us, they're going to see you for Ali afterwards.

And I was like all right, So I did it
and then they were right.

They were right. We love the team's right.

I love when the team is right. And yeah, then
I did like callbacks for Ali, cam Reid for Ali
and it all just came together.

How long was the process from like actual audition to
like beginning of production? Was it like a pretty long time.

Or I want to say first audition and was like
early February and then we started shooting end of May.

What do you think that's fast? Okay, So, like in
my experience, it's always been like I booked something and
then two weeks later I have to go shoot. So
there was this really crazy period of time where I
was like, oh, I've had it before I book something
in the next day.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
It was an American girl doll movie. When I was.

We have a lot of them in this house, Ken

We did at one point and then the hair gave
up my daughter like a breakout like rash, and so we.

It was frightening, and I hurt myself, so I couldn't

on a set and basically there was a camera that

camera came in in the way of the horse's eye

and threw me off. And I had these these boots

like it basically got stuck in the dragged. It dragged
me for like maybe ten yards.

It was intense, and I was like, I don't really
want to do this anymore. I don't want to.

Other one was a different thing, and it just reared
up and it was I was riding the horse without
a saddle for the scene, and then it I landed
on the kind of spy of the horse. Different movie.

were like no. I was like, okay, but here's like

I'm actually doing what we're trying to do. They were like,
I'm literally doing the thing that I was like, I'm
literally doing the thing that I'm like asking you to
help me with. They like it.

So I was like, fine, and it's led you to
this moment now where you have this massive hit. How
like it's not the right way to frame the question
to say, how does it feel? But going from that
phone call in February, you're on set by May. Did
you think you know the first week or two while
you're on set, Oh, this is going to be something
that really connects and people are going to love these
characters and fall in love with the world, And or

was it just a really fun job. It's always amazing
to have a job, to have a gig to be doing,
but to have one that becomes something that is, you know,
blown up in the way it has.

Yeah, I think we always knew, just based on how
much like attention was being given to it already online,
we always knew that it was going to be somewhat successful.
We had literally no idea that it would become what
it's become. And we were just having fun last year,

of friends, and we were just hanging out in Vancouver
for five months and having a great time and like
awesome kind of having our own little college experience and
it was just great. And then yeah, like we went
and did press and we were just like who knows, Like,
who knows? This is going to be so fun? Like

been like so crazy. I feel like I haven't taken

There's obviously a lot of physical and emotional things happening
as well. I assume you've watched the whole series or
have you? Have you not?

I'm I'm working through it right now. I'm very excited.
We just the first couple some steamy scenes in the show. Sure, obviously,
but it seems like giving the nature of the fact
that you guys are all friendly, it's a good environment
on set that it's like safe and everyone feels like
they can just have fun and stay in the moment
and being the character.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Yeah, and also like, I don't know if we've worked
with intimacy coordinators of course lately, but they're very like
it's a whole thing. There's like writers and contracts and stuff,
and they've been really great at like choreographing the fuck
out of it and love like it's been really awesome
and they've just made us so comfortable. And yeah, honestly,
like all of our intimacy stuff last season didn't really

start happening until about halfway through, and so we had
the chance to like build the rapport and the friendship
and the trust and whatnot.

So it's never felt strange. That's great to hear at all.
We love intimacy coordinators. We shut out, thank you for that.
But season two is going to focus more on on
alian in Dean's relationships, right, that's right, Yeah, Okay, that's
very exciting. The fans are very excited about this.

Any insight, you're probably not a lot and that's okay, I'm.

Great read these Nick read the book. It's built off
of the book and kind of made it.

Same as like season one, you know, season one didn't
like exactly follow the books. So yeah, well there's like
some new stuff, some fun, some fun, new little things
that we're adding in.

I'm sure as each of you have sort of really
taken on these characters and gotten to know them even better.
Of of course the first season and the second the writers
are even crafting it more specifically to the way in
which you're portraying these characters, and that's a fun thing
to see kind of come.

To life and also like to us as the actors too.
A lot of us are like very similar to our
characters and in specific ways, and it's been really cool
to see how they write our voices into the show
and like our our skills and like our things as people,
which is really cool. Like, you know, getting to do
a second season of a show and have the writers

Like totally so unique.

How do you feel like your character matches your personal
your personality?
Speaker 2 (14:58):
My personality I've been saying, Ali is just me when
I've like had the best day ever in maybe like
five Red Bulls, but like generally generally were very similar,
pure just like energy joy, it's like Christmas morning every day.
Speaker 1 (15:14):
Have you ever had five Red Bulls?
Speaker 2 (15:15):
I did, Oh my god, two days ago on stet
I like, in the span of six hours had a coffee,
a cold brew, and two of like the tall Boy
Red Bulls and a pseudo fed what. Yeah, because the
allergies were getting me and I literally was like I
think I'm gonna die.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
Yeah, that sounds like that's a whole journey you just
went on.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Yeah, and that was like two pm.
Speaker 1 (15:37):

Were you like jet lagging or something?

Is that why you had to It was just the
allergies and it was just like an early day. We
also did that thing where like we started the week
with early days and we ended the week with like
eleven am pickups.

Yeah. Yeah, the Cove was everywhere exactly. I did find
some great restaurants in Vancouver in the cove. We we
we were there. We filmed the movie. It's the one
that Ripe on the Water that we love. Oh well,
we're kind of obsessed with Cactus Club. Yeah, like a

famous Drake drink. There is that Petei that's Drake. Well
he he talks about it. He likes it a lot.

Oh yeah, we have five Red Bulls and two suit

So you mentioned that you're you're similar to your character
Ali in some ways. Is there a like a person
in your life who sort of embodies from the characteristics
that Hannah has where you have that same kind of connection.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Well, okay, So when I was doing the the Hannah
Ali work, I weirdly was I'm like that of the
Hannah to one of my best friends, Kiara. She's just
like so full of life and has so much inner
g and has this insane balance of being like the
hype man and also like the person that you want
(17:05):
to talk to when you're going through something. So that like,
I'm the Hannah in most of my friendship and relationships.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
Love that. Yeah, have you known Kiara for a long time.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
I've known Kiara since I moved here, since I moved
to LA.
Speaker 1 (17:22):
Was it tough moving from Dallas and having that friend
group there, I'm sure, and your childhood and teens and
then getting to LA and sort of like kind of
starting over essentially new new career path and friends.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
And I had just finished shooting a kids show.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Also in the Cove and the American American Girl Doll.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
No, it was called Project i'mc Squared and we did
see seasons three seasons. Actually a lot of those girls
lived in LA and so when I moved here and
then like a lot of the people that like worked
on the on the show also lived here and they
became very familiar and kind of like took me in,
like I would stay with them, stay at their homes
when I was like homesick and scared. So no, it
(18:02):
really wasn't a huge adjustment. And I had already been
flying back and forth between here in Dallas so much
as a child. But it was like, I really do
not have example.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
That's so nice. It's great, it can be U be
a wild thing to to not only move states, but
then to be jumping into a new career path and
to have that you know, balance from those those folks
that you worked up with in Vancouver is so nice.
And yeah, you live in LA now or Vancouver. I
guess for a lot of the year.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
I don't actually live anywhere right now.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
That's such an amazing thing.
Speaker 2 (18:34):

Is there a place that you would be like cool?

And now that I don't have to be anywhere you
want to be for like some time other than the coup.

What don't I love about London? I love that you're

PM and the son is still up or it's just

But that means in the winter it's like terrible winters.

Yeah, winter's kind of pressing, kind of tough. January.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
This January was tough. It was about three weeks of rain.
It happens, fine. That's why we get all those amazing
brit rock bands because they can be sad and they
write good songs.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
Sad and in a way. Spoons or is that a
nineteen year old thing?

What is spoons?

So obviously with the success of a show like this,
there's there's a lot of interest in personal life and
you know, various stages in our life and career we've
we've kind of gone through that and it's an interesting
thing to navigate. How's it been last couple of weeks
months of navigating that aspect of you know, the amazing
part of getting to do what we all do is

that you have these amazing opportunities, but it does come
with some extra interest in these areas of your life.
How's that been to navigate?
Speaker 2 (20:59):
I think for all of us, it's just been really interesting.
It's something that like you think you understand, but you
don't until you're experiencing it and really understanding that, like
people will find you on the street or like find
your parents Facebook pages or like it's been strange, but
I mean Amazon's been really supportive and helpful.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
So it's we love Amazon. Ye shout out Amazon, and
and your friend group and stuff QR being more of
than I'm sure, and also the cast members you're all
going through the same time kind of it's and that's
what I'm.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
So grateful for. I can't imagine being in this situation
without like six other people that are going through the
exact same thing, you know what I mean, Like.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
That everybody and three group texts.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
Yeah, we that we can just cycle through when someone's
being anoying.

We have that within our family.

I just said, they just a literal nickname. Yeah, they

That was in the fourth grade. They the coolest kid
in school came up.

We just we moved from Texas student Jersey and the

too many Joe's. Okay. He's like, we're gonna have to
change that. And I was like, okay. He's like, what's
your last name? He's like Jonas. He's like Joe Jones,

until like months later did I believe a teacher called

our parents said hey, I would love to talk about
talk about JJ and the like who is that? Like
your son JJ? Like we don't have a JJ in
this house. And they're like do you go by JJ

I think counter makes sense. That doesn't make any sense.

And then the kid then there's a bully that pushed
me in the locker and he said j J. Jonas

you borrowed something from your neighbor makes me so sad.
I just moved out of la like a month two ago. Well,
I don't know. Whenever I went to Vancouver and my

she would just make her and her entire family would
just like make me food and deliver it to me
all the time. Because I'd walk by and I'd smell
