Failing is scary. Heck, no one works hard for something not to go as they'd hoped. However, failure is integral in leveling up in every aspect of life, and the people that you're admiring and following right now? Trust me, they've failed, too. Talking about how to get over the fear today, and answering a listener question about goal setting best-practices.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Hey, hey, Emily. Here you are listening to five Minute
Friday from Hurdle. This week, I'm rapping about failure. It
is something that is crippling for so many and it's understandable,
right because you don't work hard at something for it
to not go as you hoped. But with that said,

(00:41):
there are different stakes that you are undergoing every week. Right,
Some things you may fail at and it's a bigger
deal than other things. Maybe you feel as though you
failed because you were let go from a job, or
you feel as though you failed because you were in

(01:02):
a long term relationship that didn't work out. Now, it
doesn't help with social media that sometimes we talk about
these things openly publicly, and then there is room for
critique from so many others when things don't go to plan.
With all of this said, my urgency for you this week,

(01:25):
my hope for you is that a fear of failure
doesn't prevent you from trying, because in order to get
to where you want to be, you need to be
willing to try. In order to get to where you
want to be, you need to be willing to try,
and that means that you also need to be willing
to get uncomfortable. I didn't know the first thing about

(01:49):
podcasting when I started podcasting, but what I did know
was that where there's a will, there's a way. And
so I started asking questions and trying new things, and
understanding that if the worst thing that could happen was
that I started exactly back at square one, then candidly
square one wasn't all that bad to begin with. This

(02:10):
is showing up for me right now in my life,
in maybe not as serious of a way. I have
this goal this year to get three pull ups. If
you follow me on Instagram, you have been indulging in
this journey with me. And I remember when I went
to go after my first pull up toward the end
of twenty twenty four. I was sitting about to do

(02:32):
a lap pull down, and the lap pull down felt
rather easy, and I thought to myself, Hmm, I wonder
if I'm capable of doing a pull up now, something
that I hadn't tried in probably about ten plus years,
certainly not in my adult life, without assistance from some
sort of a resistance band. And so I went over
there without an ego, and I went to do something

(02:55):
that was very possible that I could fail at and
was then sooh stoked and excited when I succeeded. This week,
I am back at it, and now I've hit one,
I've hit two, I'm leveling up to three. And today,
for the first time, I said, why don't you just try?

(03:15):
Why don't you just go for it? Because it is
in these moments where there is resistance that we do
learn the most. And that is the really beautiful thing
about working out right is that it is truly a
metaphor for every hard thing that we will come across
in our life. Did I get the third pull up?

(03:35):
It's up for debate? There was like some squirming and
some like usage, and I won't bother you with the particulars,
but what I did was that I tried, and I
wasn't scared of failing, and I realized, in the act
of failing again up for debate, that I'm better for
trying at all. And so I bring you that lesson

(03:58):
this week. I bring you that takeaway this week. You
that as the thing that I'm molling over. If you
don't put yourself out there, if you don't try, if
you aren't willing to fail, you might miss out on
the great things that are available to you, right as
Dakota Lindworm and Des Linden and Chelaine Flanagan and so
many of the excellent women that I've had the privilege

(04:19):
of sitting down with on this show have said before
going after their scary dreams, going after something that might
seem a little bit delusional is the best thing that
they had ever done for themselves. And so my prompt
for you this week is, what's something that's delusional for you?
What is that big exciting thing that's worth failing for,

(04:43):
that's worth putting yourself out there for. What do you
want to go after and maybe fail at, knowing that
that failure is truly actually an opportunity, right, a big opportunity,
And now a listener question, only big fan of what
you do over there? And writing in referencing last week's

(05:05):
Weekly Hurdle newsletter, I am working on my goals for
the new year, and candidly just feel super overwhelmed with
everything that's in front of me. I feel like there's
so much I want to do in my personal, professional, financial,
mind body, mindfulness, all of these different categories, and I'm
unsure where to begin. What am I supposed to do.

(05:27):
Thank you so much again for everything you do. I
know this is a bit sporadic. Appreciate it, Tessa, Wow,
I get this. This is a common sentiment for so
many people when it comes to setting goals, right, And
what I will say to you is something that I
encouraged the group of individuals that I worked with last
week here in New York, and that is choose three areas.

(05:48):
So tonight, if you had to set one goal in
three different categories. Maybe those categories include health, finances, work, career, relationships,
personal growth, or mindfulness. Pick one goal to focus on
in each of those categories, and it will help you
narrow things down a bit. It can be great to

(06:10):
have a ton of different goals, but I want to
urge you if you feel like it's just too much,
get a little bit more specific. So maybe your goals
are something like get three pull ups consecutively in twenty
twenty five, or save ten thousand dollars in the next
three hundred and sixty five days, or do breathwork daily

(06:34):
for at least three minutes. Those are some examples of mine. Right,
start with those three and work on those three. That
doesn't mean that you can accomplish other things this year,
but it means it will give you a foundational jumping
off point where you can start to achieve, feel that
positive progress and then scale up from there. I hope
this helps make sure you're following along with hurdle over

(06:56):

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Rewarded for bravery that goes above and beyond the call of duty, the Medal of Honor is the United States’ top military decoration. The stories we tell are about the heroes who have distinguished themselves by acts of heroism and courage that have saved lives. From Judith Resnik, the second woman in space, to Daniel Daly, one of only 19 people to have received the Medal of Honor twice, these are stories about those who have done the improbable and unexpected, who have sacrificed something in the name of something much bigger than themselves. Every Wednesday on Medal of Honor, uncover what their experiences tell us about the nature of sacrifice, why people put their lives in danger for others, and what happens after you’ve become a hero. Special thanks to series creator Dan McGinn, to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and Adam Plumpton. Medal of Honor begins on May 28.
