Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is your 24-7 news update. The latest news this
hour in just four minutes.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
The National Transportation Safety Board has recovered the flight data
recorders from the deadly plane crash that happened Sunday at
Miami International. Five people were killed, five injured when the
Amazon cargo plane went off the runway while landing. NTSB
Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy was in Miami today saying her agency
is determined to get to the bottom of what happened.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
We are deeply, deeply committed to our duty, our responsibilities
to determine how this accident occurred, why it happened.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
She says the jet struck a van with several people inside,
then a Toyota Corolla while sliding 1,500 feet past the
paved surface. That Boeing 767 was coming in from Puerto Rico.
Gas prices are still at record highs for the season
as the long holiday weekend winds down. AAA says the
average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is

(01:03):
now $ 4. 15, up a penny from Sunday. Drivers in California
pay the highest average at $ 5. 86 a gallon, the lowest
in Indiana at $ 3. 43. In Hawaii, they're bracing for Hurricane
Lowell as we hear from Monica Nelson. Gas there is
going for $ 5. 38 a gallon.

Speaker 4 (01:21):
The storm is currently 445 miles southwest of Honolulu and
is packing winds of 115 miles per hour. Lowell is
expected to be a Category 2 storm when it makes
its nearest approach. Passing west of Kauai later tonight or
Tuesday morning, hurricane warnings have been issued for Kauai County.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
I'm Monica Nelson.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
The start of the NFL season is this week, and
sportsbooks anticipate a lot of betting action. The American Gaming
Association projects nearly $ 30 billion will be wagered on NFL
games through domestic sportsbooks this season. Growth in betting, though,
they say is slowing down, with online gaming legalized now
in all but four states, and with the rise of

(02:01):
prediction markets like CalSheep and PolyMarket.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
I'm Scott Carr.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
The family of Celeste Rivas Hernandez is calling for the
death penalty for singer David. Today would have been her
16th birthday, Tuesday marking one year since her remains were
found in the trunk of a Tesla in a Hollywood
tow yard. Her family tells the California Post the death
penalty would be perfect for this kind of human being. David,
whose real name is David Burks, accused of having a

(02:27):
sexual relationship with a girl, killing her after she threatened
to come forward, and dismembering her body.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
The L.A.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
County D.A. 's office is weighing whether to pursue the
death penalty against Burk if he's convicted. A parole hearing
for the Menendez brothers is now tentatively scheduled for March
of 2027.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
That's more than a year earlier than initially expected. Eric
and Lyle Menendez, who are in a San Diego prison
for the shotgun murders of their parents in 1996, had
been eligible to apply for a parole suitability hearing in
August 2028. The California Board of Parole Hearing granted the
earlier date, citing a provision in Proposition 9. In 2025,
the Menendez brothers were resentenced from life to 50 years

(03:04):
to life, automatically making them eligible for parole consideration because
they were younger than 26 at the time of the murders.
I'm Daniel Martindale.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
In New York City on this Labor Day, the mayor
there has launched a first-in-the-nation Office of Worker Power.

Speaker 5 (03:19):
Mayor Zoran Mamdani says it's needed more than ever, with
median income stagnating, while the average CEO of the 100 largest,
lowest-paying companies in the U.S. earned 614 times their average
worker last year. He says the mayor's Office of Worker
Power will fight exploitation and help workers get informed, connected,

(03:39):
and organized. I'm Sarah Lee Kessler.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
A metalcore guitarist and pro wrestler is dead after collapsing
at the end of a match in Pennsylvania Saturday night.
Andrew Williams was the longtime guitarist for the band Every
Time I Die, calling himself the butcher in the ring.
He was rushed to the hospital after the event in Millvale,
northeast of Pittsburgh. No cause of death has been revealed.
He was 48. I'm Scott Carr.
