Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is your 24-7 news update. The latest news this
hour in just four minutes.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Canada is hitting back with new tariffs on billions of
dollars in American goods, escalating a trade fight with the U.S.
The new tariffs are set to take effect just after midnight,
ranging from 15 to 50 percent, covering about $ 27 billion
in U.S.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Imports.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Canada says it's in response to the 50% duties imposed
by President Trump on Canadian goods. The NTSB has recovered
the flight data recorders from the deadly plane crash Sunday
at Miami International Airport. Five people were killed, five others
injured when the Amazon cargo plane went off the runway
while landing. The Boeing 767 was coming in from Puerto Rico.
(00:47):
In Miami today, the chairwoman of the NTSB, Jennifer Homendy,
says her agency is determined to get to the bottom
of what happened. She says the plane slammed into a
van with several people inside, then struck a Toyota Corolla
while sliding 1,500 feet past the paved surface. Those in
Hawaii are bracing for potential heavy rain and flooding from
Hurricane Lowell. Monica Nelson has the latest.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
The storm is currently 445 miles southwest of Honolulu and
is packing winds of 115 miles per hour. Lowell is
expected to be a Category 2 storm when it makes
its nearest approach. Passing west of Kauai later tonight or
Tuesday morning, hurricane warnings have been issued for Kauai County.
I'm Monica Nelson.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Tomorrow is primary day in New Hampshire. Voters head to
the polls to decide who moves on in races for governor,
the U.S. Senate and House. With Senator Jeanne Shaheen retiring,
leaving her seat open, that race is drawing the most
attention with Congressman Chris Pappas, the leading Democrat in the race,
while Republican John E. Sununu is benefiting from strong name
(01:47):
recognition across the state. Hunter Biden says he's launching a
new meme coin called Slap Top, a nod to the
long-running political controversy surrounding his personal laptop. The token's set
to launch Wednesday. Meme coins carry no intrinsic value but
often spike on social media buzz. I'm Scott Carr. Gas
(02:08):
prices remain high as the long holiday weekend winds down.
The average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded is $ 4. 15.
That from AAA, higher by a penny from Sundae. The
mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, is saying she won't
be available to testify before a Republican-led congressional subcommittee.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
That's according to her attorney. A House subcommittee requested Bass
speak about waste and fraud when it comes to federal
tax dollars meant to fight homelessness in L.A. The subcommittee
on delivering on government efficiency specifically wanted to ask about
the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, also known as LASA.
Bass sits on LASA's 10-member board. She appoints half of
the board members, while the L.A. County Board of Supervisors
(02:47):
appoints the other half. She was going to be asked
about policies and alleged mismanagement of federal funding. I'm Daniel Martindale.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Police in Brooklyn are still looking for a suspect connected
to three stabbings that happened early this morning in Crown Heights.
Scott Pringle has that.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
A 32-year-old man's in critical condition while two others are
in the hospital in stable condition. Police say two men
were stabbed by Carroll Street and Utica Avenue around 5.45
in the morning, not far from the West Indian Day
Parade route, and then a third person stabbed less than
a half hour later at Utica Avenue and President Street.
The stabbings happened as folks were gathering for the Juve Festival.
(03:22):
The annual Juve and West Indian Day Parade have been
associated with violence in past years. In New York, I'm
Scott Pringle.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
For its sixth straight weekend, still number one at the
domestic box office is Spider-Man Brand New Day.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
I have something to tell you that's going to sound crazy.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
The Tom Holland-led film earned another $ 18 million as of
Sunday and is projected to rake in a total of
$ 23 million through the Labor Day holiday. The fourth installment
of that franchise has now pulled in an estimated $ 2. 4
billion globally, making it the third biggest release ever behind
2009's Avatar and Avengers Endgame. I'm Scott Carr.
