Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Murphy, Sam and Jody after the show.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
It's a weird question, but do you have different hugs
for different people in your life?

Speaker 3 (00:06):
Of course that's a great question.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
You mean like different tightness, different pats, different.

Speaker 4 (00:14):
Yes, of course you do. You don't realize it, Murphy.
You better not hug everybody the way you hug me.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
That's true.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
I was thinking of it mainly, you know, because I've
got five kids, but I know of okay, And for
each of the kids, there's it's like Sammy and Well
are about six foot four, so the hug to me
with them is usually I got to stand on my
toes and reach up. And I'm six sixty one. So
if I want to get the hug that I want,

(00:43):
I got to get up on the toes and do it.
Jackson likes to be hugged and have his backcrack.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Oh that's so sweet.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
So it's like, you know you do it, And.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
Michael Terry used to do that to me.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
Yeah, actually I don't. I had a family member that
used to do that also, but I don't remember who
it was. I just remember that being done to me though.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Yeah, Parker is he's kind of like me a little
more stand offish. Yes, not the full hug. Parker will
want to do it some kind of cool handshake. Sure,
one arm kind of at the back.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
It's not as comfortable with into miss kind of like
a bro hug.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
You know, hey, right, and Maddie is a normal hug.
Nice And you know, I was thinking of that the
other day. It's like, there's different You got to have
the right hug for the right person and you.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
But you don't have to overthink it. It just comes
naturally to you.

Speaker 4 (01:34):
It is a physical action that just comes naturally to
you per occasion. Now, just like anything else in social
whatever exchanges, there can be people that missdo it, that
do it wrong, misread it and do it wrong. Like
there have been people who have hugged me longer than
I wanted to be hugged, Like like you go in

(01:56):
for the hug and they're just holding you, and you're like,
I'm done with it, so I can I back out yet,
Like I'm a I'm good, but I'm not being let go.
And then there are people that you want that from.
People we don't see very often, old friends that we
haven't seen in forever. Sometimes I'll get into a we
have a friend named Enrique, and when we see him,
he bear hugs. I can't breathe and he won't let go.

(02:19):
But he just loves us. He's a loving guy.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
It's funny. If you hadn't asked the question, I don't
know that I would have slowed down to realize I'm
actually making that decision per person you are, you know, totally. Obviously,
Jodie is probably the person that hug the tightest. Our girls,
Taylor and Phoebe. I mean same thing that.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
They have different hugs. Taylor and Phoebe.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
It's similar, but Taylor's is a little different to me
now because she's older and getting taller.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Yeah, and I think maybe that's that's you know, that's
part of it. Yeah, because I don't know that they're
they're different, They're just it's I guess you would call
it a standard hug, right, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
I like that. I like this subject.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Yeah. And there are there are friends of mine, male
friends of mine who are co workers in this company.
If we haven't seen each other for a long time,
it's a hug. I mean, it's it's now of course
in the COVID.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
World that you're not to see them anyway.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
Right now, I've seen them at all. But right, but
so what previous to all this, you know, that's that
absolutely was the you know, was the standard. You know,
hey man, what's up? And so and and and those
are typically quick, tight, but quick hugs. It's just like
a boom, you know.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Yeah, whenever I hug, like female co workers or like
if somebody comes to visit, it's like to me, I'm
instantly okay, you can't do this, and and it.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Makes you nervous.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Yeah, and so.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
I wind up doing and and sadly, this is what
I also do with my daughter in law Melissa. I
wind up doing.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Like the half hug.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yeah, I know, half a body because it's like.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
I don't just like you were just saying, you don't
want the person that's going to hold on to you forever.
When's it appropriate to let go?

Speaker 4 (03:52):
So you could go a full hug, but you just
go quick and quicken out we can move.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
Or that's just the what Sam's doing is basically the
polite hug.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
For me, that's somebody I don't know that well, if
I know somebody well enough, I mean it's a I
don't know that it's a bear hug.

Speaker 4 (04:08):
But you know, don't know somebody that well, you maybe
shouldn't be hugging them anyway.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
But yeah, I noticed.

Speaker 4 (04:15):
I've always noticed that, Sam, that you are an awkward hugger,
especially if it's.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Someone you don't really know. I've not seen you hug
your kids.

Speaker 4 (04:22):
But and that's okay too. I mean, that's okay that
you don't love a hug. I do love a hug.
If I just met you and we hit it off,
I could hug you.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
And that I don't love a hug. It's just I
don't know where to draw the line, what's appropriate. Kind
of It's just I want to make sure you understand
we got each other okay, good, and I'm not doing
too long.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
That's interesting because I trust my I just trust my
gut on that it would just to me, it's kind
of even think about it, right, it's an automatic thing.
If I'm meeting you for the first time, I'm probably
not going to give you a hug just because it's
not to me. That's just not the natural right thing
to do. Nothing, it's wrong. There's some people that will
hug the first time, and I have issue with that.
But whether a male female, if I'm greeting for the

(05:03):
first time or even seeing your by professional, it's always
going to be, you know, a polite handshake. That was
something I was talking pre COVID, So I guess that's
changed everything.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
I hate that.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
I really do misgiving hugs and the handshake thing is
tricky too, because I was taught that. I went to
some sort of and I needed it when I was
a teenager girl. No, not finishing school. I went to
a class one afternoon. It was like three hours long,
just about presenting yourself and things like that, and probably no,

(05:33):
it was in the city, Okay, Okay, I went to
the city for a class and one of the biggest
takeaways I got from that was to be the first
person when you meet somebody, be the first one to
extend your hand. So you better believe if I walk
into a general manager's office or somebody's office, I'm I'm
gonna be the first one. And people seem to like that,

(05:57):
and I'm happy. I'm very comfortable doing it. I'm not
a management type, I'm not.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
Murphy, but that's I mean, it's extended first.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
I always extended first.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Because the odds are you're going to run to somebody
who maybe is uncomfortable or doesn't know how to approach it.
But you know, I tell you who gave great hugs
was my grandmother, my grandmother, and you know I mean,
and she was one of those that would give long
hugs to.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Just because she rubbed you and she said, darling, yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
She was really really just loving you. Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 4 (06:31):
My favorite hug, one of my favorite hugs of my
life happened recently and I told him you were there
when I told him, my uncle Terry, it's a big
day right now for him anyway, he's having surgery today
and he's so important to me. In the summer, when
we finally just said, okay, we're going to do this,
We're going to have a get together because Taylor was
graduating high school and we had this big socially distanced party.

(06:55):
You came Sam where you coming through the front door
if you wanted to, but the party was out side
in the backyard.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Most people also came.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
A lot of people came around the side, so a
lot of people did not come into the house when
our family came through the front doors and went outside.
And so when he and his family arrived, I was
standing there being the hostess being the greeter, and I
was greeting everybody with the elbow bomp. We were doing
everything we're supposed to do, you know, like some people
had masks, some didn't, but we were elbow bumping and
all that. And he was standing at the end of

(07:24):
the line of like six people and he was just
watching me, and I could feel him watching me, and
I could just see him. I hadn't seen him in
a long time, and I certainly I nugged him, and
so I was just bumping everybody and it was his turn.
I stuck my elbow out and he grabbed my elbow
and pulled me in for the biggest hug I've ever had,

(07:44):
and that touched me. We giggled, We ended up laughing
in that moment. And when I tell you, that was
just so special because he just took action that I'm
not going to fist bump you, and it was just
so It was one of those things that happened without words.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
That was beautiful.

Speaker 4 (08:00):
It was communication without words, and that was my probably
one of my favorite hugs of my life, except for
you and the girls.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
I understand that in that circle, that was a safe thing.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
For so important missed any part of the show.
