Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to the Murphy Sam and Jody after the Show podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
You know, I was telling you guys today in the
show that I got stuck in a dress on Friday
afternoon for about forty five minutes to an hour, and
I did.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
And you didn't call me to come help you get
out of here.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
You were at an appointment. You were unreachable and for
almost two hours, and I wanted to get out of
it myself. We have a new neighbor. Yeah, her name
is Tracy, and I almost called her because I knew
she would come help me get out of that dress.
That's something a girl would do for a girl like
nobody's ask.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Well, and you know the male usually arrives about that time.
You know, the mail carrier could help you.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
I don't want to.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
It was a full length gown.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
We don't have any video. That's no.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
I took one little picture that I showed Murphy. But whatever,
it wasn't that it was too tight either. It's because
it fits me like a glove and I love it.
But the reason I bring it up at all is
to tell you that's something that I do. I don't
know if other women do that, but it's I shop
my own closet often, and I really only like to
(00:58):
do it when you're not home. Murphy Me, no offense to.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
You, but no, what do you mean shop my Oh
so you mean actually kind of go back through it,
rediscover what's in there.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
I go into my closet instead of just what you normally.
You walk in, you pick something out to wear, and
you leave. I really deep dive my closet often and
I'm like, I haven't put that in a long time,
let me put it on. And you know, I did
that for a little while until I got stuck in
the dress Friday. Because after I got stuck in the
dress and I got it off, you know, the zipper
(01:30):
was stuck. When I got it off of my body,
I had to work and fix the zipper.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Oh, I got off the track.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Yes, it is what you're saying. I got it off
of me and it didn't bust. But the reason I
couldn't undo it was because it was stuck on the
on the fabric instead of just the zip.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Yeah. That's a that's terrible.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
It's a pain. That's a pain.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
That's a common zipper problem. Anytime you zip something up
in a zipper.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
I will wear this dress again. I just I'm gonna
wait till somebody around where you're around.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
That's a good idea anyway. Yeah, don't try.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
This on along. It's just something that I think a
lot of women. If you don't do it, you should
do it, and maybe men as well. I mean, I
don't know if you you only.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Shop my closet, that's what you mean.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Go into your closet and try things on and pair
things that you normally wouldn't do. I take inspiration really
from like online stuff that I see. It's like, hmm,
that shirt looks great with that kind of belt. I
go into my closet and I have all these things,
but I don't necessarily pair them. So before I got
stuck in the gold long gown the other day, I
(02:40):
put on another dress, just a casual like shirt dress,
and I belted it with something that I have and
I've had forever, a belt, and it works, and it's
like I didn't know that was Those two things have
been in there and they've never met.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Yeah, that makes sense to me for your closet. For
my closet, which is a very simple exercise. There's not
a whole bunch of mixing match going on there.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
There should be there could be that, I mean, but.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Literally it's I mean, I have a handful of shirts.
Everything that I have fits in one tiny closet because
Jodie's got the big closet. That's fine. I'm not saying
that I don't need a big get it in.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
I don't need a big closet, but I really don't.
The only other things that I would want to mix
and match probably don't fit fit me anymore, because you
know it's twenty years ago. I mean, like the the
the suit I wore that you and I when you
and I got married.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Yeah, are you trying.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
That a goal or don't you still have that?
Speaker 1 (03:38):
Well? I mean it was our wedding. It was its.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Minimental he keeps stuff because of that.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
I mean, I realized that would be four outfits for you, say.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
The closet.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
Well, in fairness, you know, second marriage, it was the
second outfit for me also, but I rented my first one.
This one. I just uh, you know, but anyway, I don't.
I don't have enough in my closet to go. So
would this golf shirt and Belinde, the one.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
You let me, I disagree. I'm not saying, I'll want
to do this with you, but there are shirts that
you're not pairing with the right jackets, and you already
have it all in your closet. That's what I'm telling
You've got to shop your own closet to save you
money and to have fun. And I like to do
it when you're not home, because if you walk in,
you know, sometimes you catch me doing this. I'll be
standing in front of the mirror with a different pair
(04:30):
of two different high heels on, so I'm trying to
figure out which one look, which one do I like
best with the skirt or whatever I play in my closet.
That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
I understand that.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
And because of that, I know what's in my closet,
and I have endless choices.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
I mean, if I'm being if I'm being honest, I
have five pairs of shoes maybe maybe, I mean, it's
like you know about that far pairs of dress shoes
and then a handful of casual I don't, I know,
And I'm not an overdoer there.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
So could play more. What about you, Sam, I only.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Have I think two pairs of dress shoes.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
That's fine.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
A bunch of comments.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
I'm not asking you the number of shoes. I'm asking
you the bigger question here.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Do I play?
Speaker 2 (05:11):
Yeah? Do you play in your way?
Speaker 3 (05:13):
I don't know if you've.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Noticed, but you do, like Jody, you play in your closet.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
In fact, I got stuck in a dress the other day.
I couldn't get out a No. I don't play in
the closet. I take it out, and you know, it
hits me like while I'm driving, Oh, you know what
I should have worn that? Sight those recently, I've I've
bought these, like cream colored jeans.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Oh yeah, I've seen you in cream colored jeans.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Oh, I wear those like once a week. Are Oh
maybe or not? Maybe you're thinking there were my regular
khaki cream color.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
It must be that I'm not looking at I'm hard enough.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Yeah, I found a pair of jeans I like and
it came in cream color. So I bought the cream color,
and I like that. A lot of times. I'll just
wear a shirt and jeans, shirt and jeans, and it's like, wait,
why don't you wear the cream color pants with those?
And see how that pops out? So I do it occasionally.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Okay, cool, play in your closet is so so fun,
more so for women, I think. But it depends on
what kind of stylish man you are. I don't think
playing in your closet will take an hour, Murphy. But
we could play in your closet and I would suggest
some different shirts under jackets.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
No, look, I could try on everything three times at
an hour. There was very little in the closet.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
Well, next time we do something where he has to
dress up, why don't you we'll play.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
We'll play. But the problem with him is if I'm
I'm assuring him that this is this would look good.
I promise you this will look good. What do you
think he does? He doesn't trust it, he wants to
overthink it, and he only wants to trust the sales girl.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Oh no, I try. I do trust you completely.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
I've had some discussions where you didn't and that's fine.
You know, fashion and clothing is a very personal thing.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
Yeah, but I do. I trust your a judgment more
than mine, you know. And you helped me to put
together when we did that trip a couple of months
ago to when.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
You get your award fancy fantaynight.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
You picked my primary and my backup outfit and so
I trust.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
I thought we had to wear tucks. You got two tuxes.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
He had no, No, he had one tux, but he
had a backup you know him shirt. He had a
backup shirt, a backup tie tie, and the pocket thing. Yeah,
the pocket square.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
I want to change my mind anyway.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
I'm just saying, if you don't currently man or a woman,
play in your own closet. It's a smart thing to
do because clothing and fashion is expensive. And it's really
smart because it kind of like this dress that I
haven't worn in a while, and it's like, I forget
about it. It's a cute dress. Now it's like having
(07:38):
a new dress because I'm going to belt it next
time I wear it, because I got this really awesome belt,
but I also haven't worn as much as I should
and I really like it and it's gorgeous and it pops,
and it's like I have a brand new, you know, outfit.
Or two. My goal was to spend a couple of hours.
You were going to be gone for two hours. I
got home and undressed and I was like, ta, I'm
(08:00):
here in my closet and I put the dress on,
found the belt. Was so excited and that's when I
got in the full length gown and it stole my joy.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
So you spent two hours in one day. At least
you could change your shoes if you wanted to do.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
When I zipped up that gown and I got it
all the way up to my neck, I thought, how
did I do that by myself? And I looked at it.
I was like, yeah, I'm definitely keeping this.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
I'm hoping you.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Usually depend on me to go that last four or
five inches.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Yeah, I got all the way. Maybe it's all the yoga.
But when it was time to get it off, I
started unzipping and it got stuck. I could feel it
gets stuck on the fabric, and it's like if I
rip it, I might rip it.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Is that a sign of a cheap dress? No, I'm
just and I'm not saying you buy cheap. It's not
some sort of I'm just saying.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
I don't know if it's I don't know the answer
to that question, but I do know that I've had
I've had clothing, dresses, gowns even that were not cheap.
That zippers are an issue.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
I always run into that with jackets.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Zippers can be issues.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Yeah, they're annoying.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Yeah, especially if there's a lining and there's a definite
lining on this gown with all the gold beating.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Yeah, that kind of stuff bunches up and gets caught
in the zipper fast.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
It wasn't a sequin though. It was the actual fabric.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Yeah, that's I know what you're talking about, thin fabric
on the inside. If you get like multiples and if
it comes together, it bunches up a little bit and
gets stuck in the zipper. Can't tell you how many
things get stuck in Okay, Truthfully.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
I pulled the sleeves off of my arms and scooted
it out of it and hung it back up. And
the zipper's fine, So I didn't damage the gown. Yeah,
but I had fun playing in my closet. Just for that,
it was not as fun as it should have been.
It should have been hours. I should have I should
have come away with like four different outfit pairings, well,
all stuff that I already own.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
Yeah, I know, and you, I know that you love enjoying,
you know, mixing and matching, and I can see how
you'd come up with something new for me. I guess
for me, where it happens but this defeats the purpose
because you're trying to save money and repurpose what you've
already got. But it's like if something new comes in.
Sometimes you've thrifted something that you found for me. Sometimes
it's something I buy that's new, and then you figure out, Okay,
(10:12):
how many different things can I pair this with? But
I tend to get in a comfort zone and I
like what I like, and then once you like what
you like, I tend to buy ten of them.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Yeah, you do, And I really want to commend you
for that. You need that. You don't need another decision
in the morning. I can make decisions quickly. I can say,
let me switch out this belt and let me put
these pair of heels with this instead, and that's two seconds.
You are not that person. You need the Mark Zuckerberg
(10:43):
way of I'm wearing only this every day so I
don't have to think about it.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
I have to be careful because I could wear a
black shirt every day. I really could. I know that's
the jobs Mark Zuckerberg thing.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
I don't want you to do that.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
No, not every day, but I don't know, And maybe
you've noticed over time. You know it's the I've probably
sometimes warn them up to three times.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
In one week.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
No one's ever said anything about it. It's because everybody's
used to be wearing them. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
Now, do what you want to do. It's fashion, and
choosing what you wear is a very personal thing.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
I will get on a kick though, because I also
get a little compulsive. But again, this is the buying,
not the closet thing, but your love for clothes and
is I have a similar thing when it comes to
once I found something, then I want six different.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Verias every color. You know.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
The thing is if it fits yeah, and you're comfortable.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
Yeah, that is so true. You find something that fits
you perfectly, and you're like, all right, same brand, Give
me ten colors.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
About how many pairs of Chucks do you have?
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Sam? Probably about twenty. That's a lot of there's a
lot of pair this weekend, well color white. I didn't
have any all white ones classic. But I mean the
thing is with new Chucks, I got to dirty it
up a little before I wear them, because I mean,
because it's white, it's like, oh, who got new shoes?
Speaker 2 (12:04):
And the best way to dirt them up is just
wear them.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
I do. I wear them around the house I mean,
I wore them this weekend around the house.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Very good. I do that. When I have new heels,
I wear.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
Run in the backyard, yeah, running in the dirt.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
I wear new heels around the house first, to make
sure that they get a little bit of wear on
the bottom. You don't want slippery heels, you know. At
a restaurant, you don't You don't know what that floor
is going to be, like, Yeah, that's why. Sometimes you know,
I'll be like in shorts and a T shirt, walk
around the heels like looking like Mariah Carey at the
house because I want to get the heels.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Yeah, I didn't know that was the reason for them.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Sometimes sometimes I'm just testing, you know, how they feel.
You know.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Sometimes it's just your three inches taller than me when
you wear those.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Sorry.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
My daughter Mattie does something that I picked up on
because every time I see her in a formal or
semi formal situation, it's a different dress and I'm thinking,
where are you giving all of these clothes? She does
this thing where if she buys them, yeah, wears them
for what she wanted to wear them for, and then
turns right around and sells them. You just got this
constant thing going on, buying and selling.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
So every time smartest.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
She posts a picture, it's like, where did that outfit
come from?
Speaker 2 (13:12):
It's the smartest way if it's something that you're only
going to wear the one occasion, let's just be honest.
I have an emotional attachment to that red dress that
I wore to the Gracies, but I'm probably not going
to wear it again for something like that anyway. Do
that makes sense? So I probably should do that. It's
(13:32):
in perfect condition. I had it altered to fit me,
but I could sell that.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
You know, you've done a lot of that I have.
I do it with Jewelry's accessories and others. That's that
is so much. Honestly, it is fun.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
It's really funny because if you can.
Speaker 1 (13:49):
Get back when you paid for it, then it's like
a constant churn and it's not costing you anything new
clothes all the time. It's kind of like renting it
for five bucks and then if you know what I mean,
if you get the price right.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
I also clean out my closet often and bring I'll
some a lot of stuff I'll donate, but some pieces
I will bring to a consignment store. And you know,
let them sell it and I get a portion. And
the last time I rolled in there one of my favorites,
she was like, you have so and so much credit,
and I was like, really, I had forgotten that I
brought her, you know, some stuff that's sold, so I
(14:21):
was like, I'll have that bag, thank you or whatever.
You know, it is fun, but you know, it's just
it's a good piece of advice to learn to shop
your own closet. And it's a good way to go
in there and say, if I'm really not wearing this
and I put it on again, I try to restyle it,
I'm really not wearing it. Get rid of it. Because
(14:43):
the space is costing you as well. The space that
that old suit that you are not wearing anymore, the
space that it's taking up is costing you. The space
you would if you cleaned out even twenty percent of
your closet Murphy of things you're not wearing anyway, what
you would gain is the clarity of what you're looking at.
(15:06):
You're not looking at one hundred things crammed together. You're
looking at twenty three things hanging or whatever. So the
gift is a fresher look.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
I do have one little tiny section of that sort
of sentimental stuff. Yeah, it's not huge. What takes up
a lot of my closet space or the coats and
the coats really don't belong in there. The coats belong
in the hallway coat closet, but the hallway closet is
not used for coats. Well, that's the gift box and
wrapping paper closet. You probably can be You didn't know
(15:38):
that there's a big pole in there.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
But it's wait, there's some stuff hanging in there, and
you have never said to me, yes, some of my stuff.
If you want to hang coats in that closet, I
am fine with it. We can put Christmas stuff at the.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
Bottom because the bottom, because you know, when the girls
moved out, one of those clostes became Christmas closet, so
I lost access to that.
Speaker 3 (16:03):
You know, so both of your daughters moved out, but
you gained nothing.
Speaker 1 (16:09):
So sorry. If we can relocate the coats from the closet,
I'll probably free some space up.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
We can totally the whole point of this shop. You're
on closet. It's a joy and you'll save money and
you'll get new outfits. Missed any part of the show.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
Get it all on the Murphy Salmon Jody podcast.
