Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Murphy Salm and Jody after the show
podcast road trip Snacks.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Let's talk about it because a lot of us are
hitting the road this summer, seventy two and a half
million Americans traveling for fourth or July next week, and
a lot of them, you know, it's a road trip,
and road trip snacks are real. I don't know if
you even realize this, Murphy. I know everybody has their favorites,
like something that you only eat when you're in the
car on a trip. That's what makes it kind of special,

(00:28):
right you can look forward to the snack. You're not
even to your not even out of your neighborhood, and
you're snacking because you know you have a long trip
ahead and it's part of it. But you don't know this, Murphy,
But I try to be it's a big decision for me,
because yes, I.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Don't decision before we go and we hit the road
like whatever you put.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
No, No, let's just say we're on the road and we
decide to see because.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
I mean sometimes those are the most fun ones because.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
They're promptu Yeah, you didn't know you were going to
have a turkey sandwich or whatever. You end up having
for you, it's more like a barbecue sandwich Murph. But yeah,
I when you're sitting in a car for a long
period of time that many hours, to me, you're being sedentary.
So I also like to be careful what I eat.
I don't want to eat too much junk on a
day when I'm just sitting. Does that make sense.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yeah, But it's vacation. You're supposed to eat junk.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
And I just try to be very careful with it
because it's like, let's just say, I get a bag
of cheese popcorn, which is something I like. I like
them salty, I like them cheesy. If it doesn't turn
out to be as good as what somebody in the
back seat has, I've got envy. And but I'm not
going to also eat a second snack. Does that make sense? Yeah,
I'm careful with my snack choice for the road trip,

(01:43):
are you, Sam?

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Yeah? Because in my head, it's like, you got one choice,
don't screw it up?

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Right.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
If you're on a convenience store or a BUCkies, it's
like how many aisles? It's like, or do you want
the candy isle? Do you want the chip aisle? Do
you want the meat aisle.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
It spends on what you're what you're in the mood for.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Yeah, and if you're Murphy, I guess you get one
of each you can. Yes, it always works, you know,
one for now, one for later. But you know, if
it's the food part, which I do consider those snacks
like you're saying too, because it's just a treat usually.
But I will do more savory snacks on the road
than sweets because you can make them last a little
bit longer. Yeah, they will last a little bit. Candies

(02:21):
are once done, you know what I mean. And to me,
a little bag of something it will at least last
you for a few miles. You know.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
I've learned the hard way too that with our girls
when we were when they were little and we would
take these road trips, I was being you know, super mom,
and I always had snacks Like I'm like, I brought
some smart pop or I brought Doritos or whatever, and
that's great, but it's not as good as a find
at a you know, it's not as like special because
they have that all the time.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Yeah, my mom when we travel, she would have a big, giant,
like beach bag full of snackies and it was straight
from the pantry. It's like if the chips had been
eating some at home, the clip was on the it
was in the bag, and you're taking it with you.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
We take the pantry with you.

Speaker 3 (03:03):
But I like the you know, yeah, let's jump in
the store and surprise ourselves.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Murphy's the king of that. Honestly, a lot of fun.
It's actually a lot of fun. There have been times
when I'm just tired of being on the road and
you know whatever, I'm just so ready and he walks in,
he walks out, and I'm already in the car, and
he's got surprises and it's fun. It is a lot
of fun. I know our girls feel the same.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Well, plus, when you're traveling, I mean you might hit
a spot that has a snack that you don't have
where you live. Corract, It's like, let me try this,
it's new.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Okay. So we had we asked what is you know,
the road trip snacks? They matter, The choice matters. What
is yours? Yeah, Nathan said, We vary, but normally jerky
Guardettos mix and recently lemon heads and a big bottle
of alkaline water. Ella says, I'm sorry, Elisa says, beef

(03:52):
jerky and nuts.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Yeah, Danny, those are a little more filling because they're protein.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
It takes a while for beef jerky, and then Murphy
always has to floss.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
I like the beef jerky because they have the little
like nuggets now that are chewy, and of some of
the beef jerky brands, I don't know. Those are good
rather than chewing on a slim gym or a big
old tall stick of leather.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
You know, here's a funny story. Our youngest daughter, Phoebe
loves the beef jerky. That's the old soft, even slimy kind.
I'd say the greasy kind.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
Yeah, it's just greasy. It squirts at you.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Taylor, our oldest daughter cannot stand the smell of it,
and so it's like, please don't eat that in the car.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
Beef jerkey. Has they got a strong scent?

Speaker 2 (04:33):
It does?

Speaker 3 (04:34):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Okay, Danny says, I'm trying to eat healthier right now,
but I like baked white cheddar ones baked white cheddar.
Clint says, at a mammy, sunflower seeds and some fresh
beef jerky.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Wow, a mama, that's healthy.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
Yeah, a mamma sounds really good, you know, the thing
about sunflower seeds. If they're already shelled, I can do that.
Otherwise I make a mess. That's just not funny.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
I remember the role to wind it down before you spit.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Yeah, road road trip snacks. Ellen says, halapino cheetos.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yes, those are good.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Laurie says, Cheeto's in a big bag of popcorn and
you can mix it. Please mix it. To me, popcorn
with cheetos inside so so good.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
Does it seem like the snack bags have gotten bigger too?
I don't know, because you know that to me, they
always seem to be a little small, like chip snack bags.
But they seem to be like somewhere in between a
real size and a small size. Now they're not in
the little family pack size that they used to be.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
They are a little you know. If you read the
side of the bag, it says three servings. I debate
that it's really one.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Curtis said, peanut butter pretzels for road trips. That'd be
something that I would only eat on a road trip,
you know.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Okay, well, how about this if you could get us,
if you had to get a candy bar, what would
it be? Which one or a candy.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
I don't think they make it anymore. What almond snickers, Oh, no,
I've seen them. I love that. I haven't had it
in a decade.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
I had to stop buying those for Jody because she
didn't really want to, you know, be tempted by them anymore.
But yeah, yeah, those you lead them mounds every now
and then if I get you that.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yeah, I don't know. But there's candy, yeah, because it
is it's one bite equals seven bites of a salty,
salty snack.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
And you know, we are talking about guilty pleasure snacks.
We're not talking about apples and things like that. I
love apples. You could want to, Elizabeth said. Dots pretzels,
any flavor. Those those pretzels have come to shake up
the pretzel world. Gail said, dots, pretzels, parmesan, garlic and cheese.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
It's have you tried the snack mixed yet the dots not?

Speaker 2 (06:39):
I haven't seen it.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
That is so good.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
Gail says, I found the new ones, meaning the cheese.
It's that Murphy bought the other day, the chili cheese dog.
Oh yeah, and that's what she's saying.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
She eats and you know, our oldest daughter, Tailor did
not like those when she tried them. I was surprised
because I like them and popcorn. It's going to be
just a different, you know, man, different strokes for different
folks things. The thing about dots is since it's owned
by I think it's owned by Hershey's now, they also
have a mix that they do that's got a sweet
salty mix with the dots and it works. Like these

(07:10):
little chocolate covered pretzels.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
They're really good, Cassandra says, Neutra, grain bars and water, yeah,
beef jerky for Laura, Judy, Mountain dew, Fountain drink, pretzels, cheese,
and grapes. Oh and licorice.

Speaker 1 (07:24):
Oh yeah, we've done the grapes, the grapes things before.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
I like grapes. I mean they're easy to grab.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
I know you don't like licorice, but the soft Australian
licorices so good, little nubs.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
It's too strong. There's something about it. This is just
way too strong for me. Murphy knows what I'm talking about,
Yeah I do. I'm glad that you you don't eat licorice, though,
do you really? I know? Sam is the only person
I know who really loves.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
I mean, I don't dislike it, but yeah, I don't
eat it very often. I know we haven't been keeping
tally here, but I not to sound dumb, because I
know it's on every single aisle in every convenience store,
beef jerky. I didn't realize beef jerky still ranked so
highly when it came to road trip snacks and all
that last. Maybe that's what it is.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
It something that lasts, and it's not it's low carb
unless it's covered in tarayaki sauce. And I think it
makes sense, you know, honestly, Murphy, it's the only time
I ever eat beef jerky when we're on a road
trip and you'll grab some or whatever. I don't think
to have it any other time.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
Doesn't it last because it's basically.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Really hard to Lynn says. Bags of funions from Sam's
Club the only one is worth the price, she says,
meaning the bigger bag, the average price. That's what you've
at the big box stores. Like the bag of popcorn
that I love, skinny pop you get more popcorn.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Yeah, they manufacture special bags just for the wholesale distributors
like that. You know the thing about funions is everybody
knows when you're eating them.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
I never liked funions. I don't get it all right,
Charlotte wants to shout out for chips diet coke, but
at BUCkies beaver nuggets and cinnamon taffy.

Speaker 1 (09:03):
Beaver nuggets are awesome. And they've got so many different
flavors of those too. Yeah, the savory ones, the sweet ones.

Speaker 3 (09:09):
If you want what's that chocolate thing, you'll get that BUCkies.
That's the over bike over bike Lot's good.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
You still want us to bring you one back if
we hit a BUCkies over the summer.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
The only one that's a little too sweet is they
have a I don't remember. They call it a cookies
and cream filled one, and it's like, oh, it's all
over the top.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
Yeah, Susan said Pringles. Yes, and Turtle Checks mix.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
Okay, so you got it. The sweet salty mixed there
and the Turtle Checks mix.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Because of the can. I just I don't know. I
think that's smart space savings.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
And everything is organized inside. I don't know.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
I like that. I like that. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Well, and plus you can just you know, kind of
pour it in if you need to. There's a driver.
It's a safer chip.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
Murphy likes to pour stuff in his mouth, and Diane's
as zero sugar, oreos, slim gems and pecans. She snacks
on that when in a road trip. What's my favorite
One of my favorite things is that I don't know
what my road trip snack will be until we're on
the road.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
Yeah, you know what, That's true until I walk in
the store and what's hitting me? Yeah? What am I
in the move for right now?

Speaker 2 (10:13):
Yeah? God, beef Jerky is getting a lot of voats.
Speaking of but her pretzels again, free dos Pam and
Lisa Friedo's chili cheese. I don't even know, just regular
Missy says. We just came back from a trip and
we snacked on twigs, pretzel sticks, apples and mandarin oranges.
Also water and coffee. Okay, cool, See that's good to have.

(10:37):
It really is good to have. I'm sorry. When you
travel you do need fiber sometimes going to shout that out.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
That's also when you'll give you yourself a coffee tree
that you might not normally get under normal circumstances. You know,
coat you'll go in a different flavor route or.

Speaker 3 (10:51):
Get one of those double shot tall boys.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
Yeah, I can tell you I drove six hundred miles
one time.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Sam Carrie says, salt and vinegar, chips, cheese puffs, mallow
cup chocolate.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Oh yeah, would you.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
Buy a Cracker barrel?

Speaker 3 (11:06):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (11:07):
Right, he buys old candy at Cracker And our.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
Youngest daughter Phoebe loves the mellow cups too. They're special?
Are they just like it's it's marshmallow cream, but it's
mixed with some other cream. But yeah, it's like I mean,
I would say that that's an old fashioned candy.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
It's it seems like it.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
Have you tried the marshmallow Reese's Peanut butter cups yet
I've seen?

Speaker 1 (11:25):
Why? Wait, have I had those before?

Speaker 2 (11:26):
You would know?

Speaker 1 (11:28):
I don't remember if I have her now? They've got
so many flavors now.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
Don't Nina says pringles and many milky Way bars. That's
a smart way to eat candy in the small many
fun size or whatever. Do you feel like because you
can eat laughing at No? Do you feel like you
had some candy but not so much that I think the.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
Key to that is is you know, if you can
eat many, is you better put the rest of the
bag away because that becomes a mindless situation before I
know it. It's like, how did I have six wrappers
in my hands?

Speaker 3 (11:57):
Like eating popcorn?

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Just oh my god. Julie says combos, red vines and cashows.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Oh oh, cashews.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
See now, that's one of those. Underneat Cashews every day,
and that would be a treat. I would look and go, yeah,
let's give it. It's so funny how you just throw
caution to the wind when you're traveling. It's like, I'm
just gonna try it.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
And then near the cash register they always have the
two for a dollar peanut things. Oh yeah, yeah, honey
roasted peanuts or ranch peanuts or those are good. Those
that can pour right in.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Yes, the same thing. I have trouble making.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Those last, and says Cashews. Snack packs, oreos, water bottles,
mini sodas, and cheese. Its man cheese. It's always work.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
No no votes for pistachios yet.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
I haven't seen any of that. Patricia says. Pizza combos, Yes,
you never had those.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
Those are good?

Speaker 2 (12:47):
And checks mix check checks mix, muddy buddies. Yeah, that's
the sweet and the pizza combos.

Speaker 3 (12:54):
Pizza combos are good.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
I haven't had combos since they came out. And the Muddy.

Speaker 3 (12:58):
Buddies taste just like the puppy check.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
Yeah, anytime I've had those, I think about because Sam
Sam makes that, you know, Christmas time, and it's the same.
You know, you're fresh. Your fresh is still better than
what comes in the bag.

Speaker 2 (13:10):
But what comes in the bag, it'll do, pig And
then Marcia sent us a picture of what she likes
to knock on in the car. Dove dark chocolate and
almond clusters. Apparently the little the little squares of Dove chocolate.
Apparently there's a dark chocolate and almond I didn't know
that existed, but that sounds good, you know, that sounds
worth it.

Speaker 1 (13:30):
There are a couple of different you know, depending on
which route we're on. There are a couple of local
candy stores that we've learned over the years to stop at.
And so they'll do like the haystack clusters of coconut,
you know, and the milk chocolate versions and the dark
chocolate versions. And that's the kind of thing also that
we'll splurge on that I would never I would never
eat under regular circumstances, but it winds up being a

(13:51):
special thing.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
That's what's cool about it. So let your kids have
something different for you know, vacation. It is. I love
how specific wrap this up with Landon. Landon, said a
Fountain Doctor Pepper. In other words, he's rolling in and
he's not getting it from a can. He wants the
Fountain Doctor and a big pack of original Twizzlers. The

(14:13):
funny flavors it has to be.

Speaker 1 (14:15):
I like Twizzlers. I don't think about those often.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
They don't taste like anything to me.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
They don't. I don't.

Speaker 2 (14:20):
The taste is nothing.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
That's kind of the magic. It's it's its own. It
tastes like a Twizzler.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
That's like.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
Yeah, anyway, happy road trip snacking is so funny because
for the few road trips we ever took when I
was growing up, we didn't have any We didn't eat
snacks in the car. We snacked when we stopped and
that was it. You didn't eat the car, but you
didn't know that.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
No, I did not.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
We sure do eating our car.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
Yeah, boy, do we.
