Speaker 1 (00:04):
NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart
podcasts coming up on an NHL and scripted cinefiland sixty
reaction to the Oscar nominations as Sinners makes History. Plus
(00:28):
Nate Thompson will be joining us and he'll be with
us intermittently here at NHL Unscripted.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Plus the Wall of Saint Paul could be in for
a new nickname, JD. Good to be with you.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
As always, travel nightmares for most people coming back anywhere
that were traveling this weekend. Snowmagedin, afflicting all of us
here in New Jersey. Tal somehow spared in southern California
had to get to Deadmonton. So it was just we're
able you all to get up Sunday. So first flight Sunday,
United cancels it Saturday nights. At least I know it's canceled, Okay,
supposed to go to supposed to go to Toronto, then Edmonton,
(00:58):
but I knew what was going to happen, so alertly
we tried to pivot to Denver, but United canceled that
flight Saturday night. Dead I'm sending job by the Amazon
travel folks there. Let's go to Denver because Denverson expecting snow.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Denver, Edmonton.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
All right, get to LaGuardia Sunday morning dead, No one's
on the road.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Great.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Couldn't have been a smoother ride at Denver, which notoriously
has bad turbulence because that airport. We're rock abount in
near we can all speak to this. But shockingly, no turbulence.
I land within fifteen minutes, made by connection to me
and Thomas Iicki Blake Boldon living the good life.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Great.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Unfortunately, on the way back, not nearly as desirable. Red
eye out of Edmonton to Toronto in danger of that
not happening because the second leg of my flight, which
was Toronto to Newark, was canceled. So as I've checked in,
we've gone to security about to line up. Guys, you
don't have a ticket, That's what I mean. He goes,
they canceled the second leg of your flight. Like, yeah,
(01:48):
the Toronto to Newark. But I'll rebook that when I
get to Toronto. He's like, nope, the whole thing's canceled.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Like, no, I need to get on.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
I can't be a vagabond sleeping the Edmonton airport. I
need to get on this flight. Then get to trial
rey book. He's like airport too, he said, well exactly,
not great, because I'll see what I can do.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Anything gets me in the flight, no problem.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
I get to Air Canada. Go there, Hey, seven thirty
was canceled. I know I need to rebook. We can
get you in the four thirty. I gotta be at
work at two MLB tonight. I'm on the air from
five till six. There's a noon flight, there's a two
o'clock flight.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
Both those are booked. Okay, call him is on travel.
Let's just cancel the flight.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yeap United nine to thirty, No problem, get to United
nine o'clock flight canceled? Oh for two because there's a
ten to fifteen delta. Like all right, he goes, But
you're in America right now, like what you've gone through customs.
You have to get out of customs now, then go
to a different terminal, a piercing get to delta. Of course,
by the time I got through customs, by the time
I got to the terminal, forty five minutes check in.
(02:40):
I'm forty check in. We're now zero for three. I
call on man, oh and I go, this is our
last shot. I gotta get to work at two. How
do you feel about Porter? He's like, all right, Oh,
I'll hop in an uber forty five minutes drive downtown Toronto.
There's a twelve thirty Porter. No security, very few planes.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Orter, just let you walk on.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
I don't think I'm sort of I don't thin I'm
gonnacheck my passport. I think I just walked in the guy.
We trust you, we believe you. Go ahead, and you
go on one of those planes. And I felt like
Richie Allen's and LaBamba, like you're taking your life in
your hands. I mean, this is one of those it's
always a concern the plane where they say tell us
your weight and don't lie, because they're worried about weight
distribution in case there's too much weight in one part
of the plane. Good news as I got there forty
(03:19):
minutes late. Missed the meeting, but a hell of a
show and will be tonight. Me and Michael will killed it.
This is air travel in today's day and age my flower'
gonna give flowers later. I'm giving flowers to Owen.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
That's my guy.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Did a phenomenal job at Amazon Travel, despite two cancelations
in a misflight still got to work on time.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
Well, it's good too, and you missed the meeting, which is,
as we know, the pre production meetings sometimes, especially for
like MLB Tonight and Chill Tonight, it's like, hey, guys,
what's up. All right, we're gonna talk about some games.
You guys obviously on a base that you've other stuff
to cheap to worry about. But right, yeah, it's good.
They got you running around the country like good news is.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
As you know, that's a hell of an arena.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
I mean, once you get to Deadminton, it's a trek
to get their northern number. Once you're there, though, hell
of an arena. Great game, I mean, oilers running wild
on the the Anheim Ducks.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
It was a good game, at least to me. I
got it.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
It's like you're in witness protection and you're getting chased
around the country and they just keep shuffling from place
to place.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
It does feel that way.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Artists, working man and sports I.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Want to go that far. You had a stretch. It
was tougher than me.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
You had a two week stretch from about December around
Christmas time at January when you were carrying the company
and the podcast for the Winter Classic.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
But yeah, we try, still trying to battle to get
that extra day's pay, but we'll figure it out.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah, good look in the double invoicing.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
In the meantime, let's talk about the sky is falling
right now for the taummea beliefs.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Up in the sky, it's a bird.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
William Neelander found a way to make the least for
one lost Sunday night to Colorado just a.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Little more interesting.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
During a break in action with the Avalanche leading Toronto
three to nothink Camerascott Nielander some of his injured teammates
in the skybox taking in the game. That's when Slick
Willie gave the old one finger salute to the camera.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
You apologize for it.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Monday morning, NHL find him five thousand dollars. I think
a greaters is the fact that team stinks. They followed
up by falling seven to four to Buffalo on Tuesday.
They've lost seven of eight. Craig Bruby he got fifty
stitches for a gash in his head courtesy of a
workout mishap. They also got pumped six y three by
Vegas and Mitch Moore's much anticipate return of Toronto and
(05:14):
Austin Matthews isn't talking to the media.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Are the Leafs done well?
Speaker 3 (05:19):
I did?
Speaker 4 (05:19):
I tweeted out, have been active on Twitter recently They've
been getting some traction.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
So it's like, oh, nice, this is fun.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
Kick's mentioned that to me, if you want to go
down that road. You said, David Pasternak has always been underrated,
much like Adrian Kempy.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
And then people start firing back at you, and then
you got into a little bit of war words with
some people there.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
Well, no, that's the first one the way that And
again I have to take some fault on this that
I may have worded it poorly, but the grammar police
was out, but this guy was like these people were like,
are you fucking nuts? Like you're putting Kempe and Pasternach
in the same section, but I wrote in parentheses, not
the same tier. Like Pasternak I consider I'm saying he's
(06:00):
underrated because we can talk about this, like I'm saying
David Pasternak is under rated in like the top five
NHL players in the league, Like I believe he's like
ascended into that, and I think he's underrated in that
People thinking like McKinnon and Koutrorov and McDavid or leaps
and bounds ahead of him. I think he's like climbing
that he's adding shit to his game and can be
(06:22):
for the tier that he's in, which is like, you know,
top twenty in the NHL.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
He's underrated.
Speaker 4 (06:28):
So again I played a little It was a little
bit of a word salad as you can see, can
see you glazing over, But I believe I was one
hundred percent correct.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
And then I just was.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Doubling down, which was you know, which was pretty funny
because people were like coming back and be like, you
can just admit that you wrote like a shitty tweet
that no one understands, and I.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Was like, no, I refuse, Let's keep that down. Let's refuse.
Speaker 4 (06:53):
But you know, refusing to back down is similar to
the Toronto media and the fact that they never think
they hold a part in the poorest play of the
Toronto on aple Leafs and they never want to admit
that they all have this weird sexual fetish with.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
Them losing in Toronto?
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Is there a different Is there a media that wishes
for the team to lose and like, I'm a big
believer in like vibrations and manifesting and visualization. There's a
collective meditative state that the Toronto media is in where
they are willing this team to lose and they love it.
Don't tell me for one fucking second that these guys,
(07:36):
these media guys like when this team wins.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
To that end, Kafle Kelly, my buddy Irving House sent
me this blurb. I believe cathl still writes for the Call.
Kelly Beebles pronounce I think he so much to the
Toronto Star. This is the blur he wrote the leafs
of the Hotel California sports teams you can check out,
but you never leave. I have no idea how it
got this way or how you fix it. But it's
the root cause that leaves inability to perform. It's not
that they're not good enough. It's that they hate going
to work. They hate the people they see at work,
(08:00):
but the perks are so good and the job has
so few expectations of them that they'll do anything to
avoid finding new work.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
They prefer to stay here forever, feeling sorry for themselves.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
See, it's just like they they make up these things,
to the point where Mitch Marner was like, well, I'm
out of here and was looking to get like there's
just you know, it didn't work. They tried to put
something together. Now the Leaves have played bad. They haven't
played good in this home stand. I mean, oh, four
and one, that's unacceptable. They didn't piss the drop. But again,
(08:30):
they've dealt with a ton of injuries this year. I
think they're in the top two teams in Man games lost.
But like key players, you know, Willy Neelander's out, you're
missing Willy Kneelander, Chris Tanna, if you're missing Dakota Joshua
nick Wah was out in the I think he missed
the rest of the game last night too, so he's
out now. So you're like they've been battling through Austin's
(08:54):
wasn't healthy for half the year. So like to me,
I did see something online which is and I'll get
to the Willy Nielander because I got some thoughts on that,
but the what you see here is like, in my mind,
if I'm a Toronto Maplea's fan, I'm a little excited
because I'm like, hey, at this point, let's not fucking
pretend like even if you make the playoffs and you're
fully healthy.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
Do you think this team makes.
Speaker 4 (09:15):
A run without adding any pieces or do you now
look and go, hmmm, is a top five pick potentially
in the cards right now? Is there a way to
bring in a severely a very very good Noticephila, a
very very good talent in this draft because it's a
good draft this year.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
So do you start looking at that?
Speaker 4 (09:33):
I know Matthew Nyes came out, which was listen, good
for him, but he was like, I don't look at that.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
I haven't looked at the scoreboard.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
I think we're like still firmly in the race and
make your eight points out and you're you're struggling right
and eight points when you have to jump The problem
with like making the.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Playoffs too many teams to catch.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
At this point.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
You got to leapfrog teams and that's hard because those
teams are getting points and you got it, they gotta
leaprob what four teams right now? Yeah, so you got
to go on a run like Buffalo did, and even
sometimes that's not enough like Buffalo, what on? This has
been on this incredible pa and there's still like three
points out of there are three points into a playoff,
spot like it's not. They lose two or three games
(10:11):
and they're back out again, so it's very it's very tight,
so there's still a way to cut. But I think
they're kind of getting to that point. And I tweeted
last week about teams that I think are eliminated right now,
and that caused a stir as well because somebody who
grammer policed me again, but I said, only in the East.
The only team I think is hypothetically, not statistically but eliminated.
(10:32):
It's like the Rangers. But it's getting close. So but
enough of that. Now to the Willie Neelander. Once again,
I think very biased Toronto media. I hope they clipped
this and post on social media. Mikhail Sergachev did this
recently or did it earlier in the season in Utah?
No one said a fucking thing. He did it walking
(10:53):
out of the tunnel. Toronto's gonna find a way.
Speaker 5 (10:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
Was Willy Niland or wrong and doing that? Yeah, I
don't think Sergachev should have did anything. It's stupid. I
don't think Kneeland studet. You get paid, you're sitting in
a press box and tank top most of the time.
You kind of get to do whatever you want. You
play this cool fact, you're great, love it. That's your personality.
You know, we're trying to bring this to the game.
We're trying to evolve the game. But there's a guy
that gets paid a salary that is much less than
(11:19):
to you, that films the rink, and he's told to
by a producer to film the press box, and that
producer is told by somebody higher up than to film
that Willy Neelander that box. So for you to do that,
it's a little bit like, Okay, you're cool, great, sweet,
you're in a press box. But I think Toronto media
(11:42):
blew it up. But I think that Willy Neelander like
a fine I understand, and I agree with Haros's decision
of like his explanation was like, you have to conduct
yourself like an NHL player inside the rink, on the
ice just as much as outside. But Sergachev didn't get
anything when he did it, so I seem like there's
(12:03):
a little bias, But that's kids thrown. The media is
a lot bigger and kind of I think the noise
got too loud, but again I don't think you should
be doing that. But it's fucking it is what it is,
and uh, this is it's a dumpster fire right now.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
Though, Yeah, circa chief flipped bird last April. Like I said,
nobody cared as far as the injury. Still Warts has
been a big when he's been out all season and
the lead's gotta jump three teams to get in the
wild card eight points back.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
We were talking about this.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
With the Panthers recently, just saying, you know, what's that margin,
what's that deficit once you get to the Olympic break,
because I think if it's eight points and four teams,
you're pretty much dun ski like, there's just no way
you can make the math work.
Speaker 4 (12:38):
Panthers are kind of there, I mean a little, but yeah,
it's I think eight points is very difficult.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
Shows meantime, the Ducksters, I want to ask you opinion
on Bruby Wright. That's an unbelievable injury. What kind of
a workout misap is that? I mean, you're a pretty
fit guy. Don't think you've ever read an injury like that.
Speaker 4 (12:57):
Yeah, we kind of glossed over that. I think everybody did.
He's just like I'm going to show you. I was like,
you must have drumped up play or a bar in
his head. I think the what you know, he might
have been doing like chess press and he kind of
was going to fatigue. And usually when you go to
fatigue in the chess press with dumbbells, he kind of
lose the handle on it. He might have just hit
(13:18):
his noodle with a dumbbell or I don't know, but
what's Craig Brube lifting like heavy?
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Likeuck? How old is the guy? He's in sixties.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Well, he's seventh all time in Pelhiman, second all time
in majors. I would guess he's like fifty eight. He
still wants to kick ass.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
He just eating, just eating plates and weights in there
was munching on. He's just going on there and fighting
the gym.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
I'm appreciated, but I don't think it's his fault. Like
everyone could all file the coach.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
Yeah, injuries and again injuries to key players, and I
mean he's playing the roster that was developed. It's just
hasn't been healthy for most of the season. So like
it's hard, it's frustrating, but you know they're not playing
the right way though.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Right now.
Speaker 4 (14:01):
They're cheating all over the ice and defensively gross cut.
All those bowls last night were I mean, Buffalo looked fantastic.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Great news for Linda.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
Yeah, Lindy ruh Yeah, Lindy at home, Rough on the road,
rough to play against, I mean, stick on pie. I
thought Lindy Rouff was dead in the water. But this
fuck guy's got nine lives like.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
A Cat's incredible.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Everyone said, Okay, new GM, new management, Lindy Roughs, don't
know Lindy resuscitated, Lindy killed him.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
Savers gonna take the playoffs. Jack Adams, Ye.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
He's gonna win. Spun guys win the Jack Adams.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
By the way, chief is sixty for the record tal clarifying,
So yeah, six years Yeah, still get mugged by the way.
Ducks are soaring right now. They've reben in a major way,
looking like their breakout season appeared to be going off
the rails. They went seven in a row. I saw
them lose that game seven Ford Edmonton. However, it was
pretty expected because third game of four nights had a
great first period, but after that, Edmonton's defense in particularly
was unbelievable. Buscher was coming out that six point game
(14:56):
on Saturday four to three and were Calgary Sunday, though
they guy to talk was the rookie Beckett Seneca first
career NHL hat trick. You followed up two assists against
the oil every time he was on the ice.
Speaker 5 (15:05):
JD.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
John Forslan and Jody Shelley and Thomas Sake every ravened
this kid, like, my god, look at beck at Seneca.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
You can't keep your eyes off him.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
And so this Calder race, which felt like it was
demidoph and Matthew Schaeffer demandoff leading right now in points,
but Seneca right now leads in goals with eighteen. He
was drafted third overall by Anaheim in twenty twenty four,
and as Chris Poger asked for the video when he
got drafted, which was hysterically he literally gave an open
mouthed oh my God, because he was stunned that Amaheim
picked him.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
And Patferbeek said.
Speaker 1 (15:32):
He purposely had taken other people out to dinner and
had avoided talking to Seneca. He didn't want to have
any indication that he was going to take him all along.
He was his guy, and Seneca was genuinely shocked and
he got picked, as was his dad. But this kid's
a player right now. This Calder race, we thought it
was a two horse race, JD might be a three
man race.
Speaker 4 (15:49):
A this is one of the I'd have to like, look,
this has been one of the better classes of rookies
in a season. I mean when you really go down
the list, like you mentioned the three, but you got
Ryan Leonard at thirty points, you got Oliver kap And
who's been fantastic.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
At twenty seven points, you.
Speaker 4 (16:07):
Got Fraser Minton that's having a great year for Boston.
And then you kind of, you know, after that, you
got Justin Sordiff that's in Washington's. It's on a heater
right now. It's the future is really bright. So it's
been fun. It's been fun to watch every night. I
feel like there's a rookie that we're like, oh wow,
great play, had a great night. But Beckett Seneca I
(16:27):
did a tape Rouman hum earlier in the season, him
and Braden Bowman. But I was kind of telling people like,
look out for this kid. I think he was a
dark horse to win the Calder. I mean he's tied
in points with Demodov, but like the kid shoots the puck.
I mean, you can go through his stats, and you
know he's got one hundred and twenty shots. I mean
shooting percentage at fifteen percent. He's playing seventeen minutes of night,
(16:50):
so he's playing more minutes, two more minutes in Demodov
a night. Obviously, Schaeffer, I think is it's hard to
go against Shaeffer for the Calder. But I mean Beckett's.
Speaker 5 (17:03):
Man.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
Who Yeah, what do I think Demanov's better than beck.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Hit No Demodov Rookie of the Year.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
No, it's Schaefer Schafer all day.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
Hands down, eighteen years old playing those kind of minutes.
Islanders playoff team.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
Yeah, shae for one hundred percent. But I'm just saying
Demanov versus Beckheit Seneca. And that's the thing is people
don't see him enough because you know, as games are
at if most people are on the East Coast and
most of the people that vote, which I don't think
half of them should have a voting right is get
gets a chance of m and they don't even stay
up for the games and they're just like, oh, yeah,
this guy had a couple points last night.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
I'm going to vote for him.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
It was talking to Joel Quenvill because he goes this
is the most media I've spoken to in months, and
we started laughing and Anaheim He's like, I go with
the athletic. He's like, yeah, guy from the athletic Orange
County registered. And that's not even every day like sometimes
I just I finished practice and I go home.
Speaker 4 (17:54):
I had the one game in Edmonton, which was like
my biggest meetia because when you think about it, I
played Florida, Arizona, Dallas, San Jose, so I never had
media until I went to like the Canadian city. So
it's exactly that, Like in San Jose would be like
the one beat writer that like basically sleeps at the rink,
but just like kind of you know, Trot's in and
it's more now there's like three or four guys, but
(18:16):
these guys just cover the team.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
They're like with you on the road all year.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
Like it's like you talk to one guy, yeah that
you basically know him by name, he knows, he knows
ATM pin code, Like he's just part of the he's
part of the group. You should talk him, you know,
you probably It's funny those guys get chirped so much
in the smaller markets because they're just you can't hide.
Like if you're in Edmonton, there's like twenty media people
coming for you. Yeah, so like you can't there's all
(18:41):
these articles and how shit you are. In San Jose,
it's like, you know, it's like Sheng Peng is the
one guy there and he's the one that's shitting on you.
So you see him every day, you're face to face
of them, and he's like, you know, it's it's it's funny,
it's it's hostile environment. But yeah, it's it's interesting with
those those markets, how less you know, how it's not covered.
But he's he's as advertised, his skating, his ability to
(19:04):
pass the pup shoot, he's gonna be a stud man.
The Anaheim's in a good spot. So but I you know,
he's he's borderline. Was one of the guys that was
going to get flowers today. But there's a lot out
there in the NHL that deserve flowers. So but Beckett
is he's a stud. He's a he's a flourishing, budding
superstar already.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
Could also throw a couple of rookie goalies.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
Maybe Jacob Dobish gets some love of the halves, and yes,
per Volsta, which gets us to the vole of Saint
Paul Olympic break Fast approaching the trade deadline. Not long
after that, Elliott Fraeman Kyle Bukowskis over the thirty two
Thoughts podcast mentioned the Wild open a trading Yes, per Volstat.
The Wild rookie rank second NHL four shutouts, He's seventh
of the nine to fourteen say percentage, big trade for
(19:44):
Quinn Hughes. Bill gar in the Wild clearly going for it.
They've an established her already in Philip Gustafson.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
What do you think, JD. Do you drade the wall
of Saint Paul if you're Bill.
Speaker 3 (19:53):
Garon, Yeah, he's shooting from the hemp I mean, you
have two goalies. One's got to go. You've already becked Gustavson.
I wouldn't mind it.
Speaker 4 (20:03):
I know they're looking or they need center depth, but
I know, you know Trocheck's been floated out there, which
would be an interesting I think would be a good
pick up for them. They're looking for depth centerman, not depth,
but like you know, second third line centers. I think,
uh yeah, he's shooting from the hip. He wants this bad.
I don't think with what they have, I think they can.
(20:24):
I don't think they can win a Cup up front.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
You know, you're well, like Corey Wongur, buddy, it was
a part of Wolfpack. He's saying, the guy get some Russians.
Make Carell Caprizo.
Speaker 3 (20:35):
Happy, Well, he is. He needs his Rooskies Roos travel.
Speaker 4 (20:41):
Yeah, but like his last Yeah, he hasn't played the
way he's played at the start of the season. I
mean his last ten games, he's got a sub nine
hundred save percentage, and it was he was hot as
a pistol early in the season. So yeah, I think
it's definitely that's a good trade piece. There's a lot
of teams that could use a goalie of that age
and caliber, and I'm sure he could maybe, you know,
(21:05):
but again they're the ones that see it more than anybody.
But I like, but again, you can't trade wolves. You
can't trade Wolfstead to New York for like a tro
Check because Trocheck's you got your stirk in, you got
you got quick.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
You don't need anything, you know what I mean.
Speaker 4 (21:20):
So looking around the league, if I were to go
off top of my head, some centermen that are out,
but there's a lot of teams that need centers.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
Man, it's it's one of the it's one of the airs.
Speaker 4 (21:30):
When we're we're missing top six centermen in the NHL,
like we're missing the top two line centerment. Like you
look like Utah needs center depth. Obviously you got Minnesota
that's it. So yeah, only too. There's a lot of
centermen that are missing. Just fucking with you, there's more.
I'll think about it. Montreal is another one that I
think needs some center depth. Washington with Pierre Luke Tubois
(21:53):
that's out, so you know it's it's gonna be interesting
and I think a lot of I think Trocheck's name
is going to be on a lot of people's lists
for sure, so wouldn't be surprised. But I don't think
Wolftead would go to New York, so that kind of
throws that out there.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
It's a challenge for Begeren.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
As you mentioned, the division is just so strong no
matter what, like you can put this kind of season
together and still knock out of the first round.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
As we've discussed.
Speaker 4 (22:13):
Before, Jonathan tabs interesting trade piece depth Centerman.
Speaker 5 (22:19):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (22:20):
I don't know how much he has left in the tank.
He's dead he's like a fourth line center. He's not
like a second He was.
Speaker 3 (22:25):
Doing a vedic medicine in India. Thanks full Man.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
What about nozom Cadri Teles thrown.
Speaker 4 (22:31):
Out NASM's another one is so NAZM Wolfstead to Calgary
for Nasum. I could get around with because you got
wolf and then you got Wolfstead. Wow the w W
W Wolf Wolfstead tandem Calgary fans.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
Tell thrown it out there.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
Meantime, speaking of making moves, the Islanders are doing that.
Just a week after Rangers president GM Christchiuriy wrote a
letter alerting fans that a retail was coming. First move
made on Monday at the Rangers uh In fact, defenseman
Carson Seussh was held out of the game Monday before
him to the rival Islanders, a rare Rangers Islanders trade
for a third round pick. And then on Tuesday the
Islanders go another trade another local rival, getting Andre Pallott
(23:12):
third rental this year and a six uner next year
for maximum siploicoff. What move could come next? What do
you think about the Rangers and Islanders make a moves here?
Speaker 2 (23:20):
JD don't see that every day.
Speaker 4 (23:22):
Yeah, a little bit of that's an easy fight, little
cross cross bridge action there. Yeah, easy, that's a little
puddle jumper. I mean, you got to talk about Matthew
Darch in this because what he's done. He got Palot Susie,
a six round pick and a chance to move up
a few spots in the third round for basically Maxim
(23:42):
Siplicoff like that, And that's a young kid that wasn't playing.
That's a tidy piece of work from this little fucking
frendcheet that's that's coming in here, and he's taken the
world by storm in this GM role. And it started
with Matthew Schaeffer, but I think he did a good job.
They have some injuries on the back end, so I
think they needed a depth defenseman. Carson Seussie doesn't necessarily
(24:02):
move the needle for me, but he's gonna help them
out with they're missing some d man, some important guys.
And then Andre Pilots, a guy that has won Cops
and he's got a pedigree and he not playing his
best hockey, but he can help this team, I think,
and usher them along. And you look at the Kyle
Palmarily injury and a couple other key pieces that they've
(24:23):
been missing, like you're bringing in some veteran ness probably
not a word, but you're bringing yeah, veteran, savvy, veteran
presence with somebody that's won to kind of get you going.
And again the Metropolitan Division. This team is Islander team
most likely will finish number two if they keep going
the way they're going.
Speaker 3 (24:42):
They're playing some really good hockey. So uh so, yeah,
I think it's a.
Speaker 4 (24:45):
Great way for Drury. I mean, listen, how much love
do I have for Drury right now? And what he's done?
I mean he I think, okay, yeah, like he got
britis and pieces. I think it's gonna be how does
he move trocheck and what is he doing bringing in
like very very good assets.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
So we'll see.
Speaker 4 (25:05):
But yeah, I think good trade for you know, that's
it's a little bit of friendly fire, which is nice
to see that they just platuned each other between the teams.
I thought it was like taboo to trade somebody from
the Rangers to the Islanders.
Speaker 2 (25:17):
They rarely red sox you don't see, you know, like now,
like it's like.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
A fucking unwritten rule.
Speaker 4 (25:22):
This guy is writing AI letters to the fans and
he's trading to the arch nemesis guys unhinged.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
Tell us why you like Matthew Darsh.
Speaker 6 (25:34):
McGill graduate Matthew Darsh first of all, and uh and
his his brother j P played in the NFL. By
the way, it's a long snaplay for the Seahawks. Yeah, yeah,
and is and is now a doctor. Very smart and
very athletic family.
Speaker 3 (25:51):
Do you see that?
Speaker 4 (25:52):
You see the brain power in that household? She's playing
four dy chess. It's like you, and it's like you
and O and trying to travel across country again.
Speaker 1 (26:01):
He's got my flowers. That guy's unbelievable. I mean that
kind of calmness under stress. One flight's canceled, no problem,
going to the business travel.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
No problem.
Speaker 4 (26:09):
There's people that are solutions based and there's people that
are emotions based. Gotta be solutions based.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
That's well said, Keep emotion out of it.
Speaker 1 (26:17):
Meantime, Barkie's back sort of two time defending champion of
Florida Panthers. Absolute dogfight again in the playoffs, huge emotional boost.
Captain Alexander Barkoff skated in full gear first time.
Speaker 2 (26:27):
On the ice.
Speaker 1 (26:28):
Is tearing his ACL and m sail in September only
been four months since he sustained an injury that was
supposed to.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
Keep him out seven to nine months.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
Jam Bilzito said he doesn't expect to the captain played
during the regular season, but how big of a boot.
Speaker 2 (26:41):
Just see him on the ice here, JD.
Speaker 4 (26:43):
The guy's going to be back before the playoffs. April
Tasha Barkoff will be playing in the regular season this season. Wow,
take it for what you want, but it's going to happen.
It's going to happen.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
Okay, what happens if they're ten points out, its April
Fool's day. They don't worry about it.
Speaker 4 (26:58):
He's you ain't stopping him, whether they're in or out.
He's the captain.
Speaker 5 (27:01):
I like it.
Speaker 3 (27:02):
He's going to be back. I'm telling you he is.
He trains himself.
Speaker 4 (27:07):
And funny enough, I talked to some other trainers there
in Florida, and the way they described is like he
trains his body for this kind of not this kind
of thing to happen, expecting injury, but like so his
body can bounce back and respond quickly once he has
an injury.
Speaker 3 (27:22):
And and you know, the medical the medical.
Speaker 4 (27:26):
Industry so so like surgeries and all that, like when
I was getting myself done. Like it's so far advanced,
and it's fifty years ahead of like all the advancements
in technology for medicine. It's crazy what they can do
surgically to repair you. But the thing that hasn't kept
up with it is physiotherapy and rehab and now. But
(27:47):
there's people that are within that realm that have different techniques,
and Sasha Barkov firmly believes in those techniques of like
how to really recover more, you know, more quickly. Is
it that my grammar's all off too early today?
Speaker 2 (28:04):
As quick as you can, you're right, Marko.
Speaker 4 (28:05):
Yeah, he's able to recover faster because of these techniques.
And it's like it's not black magic or anything. He's
just trains his body to recover from injury quicker. And
it's it's not like because they say you're four to
six months because you have an ACL surgery, that doesn't
mean you can't play in four to six months. It
just means that for insurance purposes, the doctor has to
(28:26):
tell you, don't ruin my surgery, it's four to six months.
But once you get off the table and you've surgery
is completed, you're healed.
Speaker 5 (28:35):
You're not.
Speaker 4 (28:35):
You're healed, you're repaired. You just need to stay off infection.
And then once you stay off infection and the incision heals,
I mean, you're good to go because everything's are pretty
You just got to slowly build it back. But people
think that you just have to sit around and not
do anything until the three month period. But he's I
bet you he was in the pool probably two three
days after surgery with waterproof bandages.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
He was probably walking moving.
Speaker 4 (29:00):
So I expect him to be back one thousand percent
before the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
Then why would Bilziodo say so confident he's not gonna
see him in the regular season.
Speaker 4 (29:11):
I don't believe anything those guys say. They're all political
theater out there.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
But what's the benefit of Bilzieta's saying that?
Speaker 3 (29:18):
Well, so people leave him alone.
Speaker 2 (29:20):
He's not playing.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
Why would he be skating now.
Speaker 4 (29:25):
If he wasn't trying to play it this year and
wasn't confident he was gonna play like he's early, Like
he's early.
Speaker 2 (29:32):
He was skating.
Speaker 3 (29:32):
Everybody's saying Barkie's back. He was. He was on the
ice of Winter Classic skating. I saw him. I had
eyes on him, I saw him a peepers.
Speaker 2 (29:43):
Could be a date he's gonna come back?
Speaker 3 (29:44):
Then, well I did.
Speaker 4 (29:48):
I can't say I spoke to him, so he told
me something and I can't say it online, but I
can leave it hanging in the wind.
Speaker 2 (29:53):
But okay, how about this.
Speaker 1 (29:54):
I'll say March twenty first, before or after, just because
I'm only mentioning that day because it's to start a.
Speaker 3 (29:58):
Spring, so you can it's gonna be, It's gonna be after.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
Okay, Barkoff will be back after winter. That's fine, before
the start of spring. Sometime in the season.
Speaker 4 (30:07):
Yeah, what's the what's the groundhome sayings Puckstatwani Phil or whatever?
Speaker 3 (30:12):
Yeah, punks and I Phil, Punks, Tony Phil. He'll be out,
he'll be He'll be there before Phil comes out of
his hole.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
So yeah, he has to see his shadow. That we
had six more weeks. That's February second, So you're right,
so March it's in that range.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
Late March.
Speaker 3 (30:26):
Well, that's when he comes out, is that early.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
February second Groundhog days and that six weeks after that,
so then.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
You're any fucking spring.
Speaker 2 (30:32):
They say March twenty first to spring but it's really not.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
Not in New York.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
No, New York.
Speaker 3 (30:37):
It's June twentieth.
Speaker 2 (30:39):
No, that's not true.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
You just gotta get to April and you're okay, how
about spring and March? I mean in monch we all
I was. When I was there, I asked this guy,
he goes winter here is eight months ago.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
That's not triggers.
Speaker 5 (30:49):
It is.
Speaker 2 (30:50):
You can because I'm not exaggerating.
Speaker 4 (30:51):
Ask my parents. We have we have what we call
it the fake out. You'll get to like March April
and it'll like, it'll be nice, and then all of
a sudden you'll get just the fucking dump the snow
and it'll drop down to minus and you're like, what's
going on right now?
Speaker 2 (31:07):
The super draft? Tell me he goes, No, he goes.
Speaker 1 (31:09):
I'm telling you from Labor Day until April, even in
well into April, it's Montreal is still freezing.
Speaker 2 (31:15):
Geez. Four months. But that four months is electric.
Speaker 1 (31:17):
All right, speaking of electric, Special guest host Nate Thompson,
it's coming up right after this.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
You're an NHL in scripted.
Speaker 4 (31:37):
All right, welcome back. Ad Nan Verk had to take
a quick sabbatical. So first off, a war and Welcome
to our friend Nate Thompson, who's joining us for this interview,
and we'll be with us here and there this season
and hopefully into the future.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
So our next gift.
Speaker 4 (31:52):
Was drafted thirteenth overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the
twenty twenty NHL Draft. Since then, he has turned into
one of the most consistent goal scores in the league.
He's on the verge of his third straight thirty goal
season and is a key piece for a Hurricanes team
that has been picture of consistency for years. It's the
man himself, Seth Jarvis, and if you're still with us,
(32:13):
he could not make it, but we gave a nice
intro to him. But we do have Nate Thompson here
alongside tal Pinchewski, So Nate, we're not gonna waste his.
Speaker 3 (32:23):
Time with you.
Speaker 4 (32:24):
Seth couldn't make it, unfortunately, he's very apologetic. We're gonna
try to get him next week. But Nate, let's just
chop it up for twelve to fifteen minutes. Get you
kind of comfortable with the boys, and uh, how you doing, buddy,
what's been going on?
Speaker 5 (32:36):
I'm good now? Everybody left, everyone left turned off.
Speaker 3 (32:42):
We got downloads though.
Speaker 5 (32:45):
Just subscribe that ship. That's it.
Speaker 7 (32:48):
I'm good, buddy. I'm gonna be like, oh yeah, for sure, No,
I'm good, but I'm good to be here. It's it's
it's nice to be a part of the crew. It's
this will be fun.
Speaker 4 (33:00):
Well, you've been doing a ton of stuff with you know,
you've done some stuff with the Canadians, you dipped your
tone with the NHL Network, and now you've you know,
you're doing some stuff with the Tampa Bay Lightning and studio.
How's it been kind of managing that travel schedule and
it's kind of ramped up for you this year more
than last.
Speaker 7 (33:16):
Yeah, it has, and you would know more than everge Ad.
I mean you're you're a busy guy as well and
doing stuff with the NHL Network. So yeah, it's just
been balancing at all. I mean, I I you know,
having one year under my belt. I guess you could
say doing some stuff with the Kings, you know, in
between the benches, you know all that stuff. You know,
Ben doing radio. I know you've done radio too. I
mean you're just you're you're just trying to say yes
(33:37):
to everything right now, and I'm just you know, I
think it's about getting your foot in the door. And
and then now doing NHL Network, getting to go out there.
I go out there once a month and do a
few shows. That's been great too. And it's just such
a great group of people too to work with their
as well. So I mean it's been it's been a
lot of fun. It's been busy. As you know, it
gets it gets crazy. You watch a lot of hockey,
(33:59):
that's for sure, been watching a lot of hockey, not stop.
But that's been good, and you know, it's great though,
I mean it's been it's a transition to get into
this and now, like you said, like I'm sure for yourself, Judy,
I know, I see all the time, as you know,
things start to ramp up as you obviously do more
and more and more.
Speaker 5 (34:15):
So it's it's been it's been exciting. I mean, I mean,
I've been enjoying it.
Speaker 4 (34:20):
How great you know, because the three of us predominantly
reside tall as well on the West coast. How brutal
is it that, like the studios are all on the
East coast, and like when you're covering the Tampa Bay
lightning and and you're also doing the network stuff like
you're up to like two in the morning watching hockey
versus out West, You're like in bed at ten you've
(34:40):
seen all the games, you're fresh, you can rewatch the
highlights like I've been. I'm like, we need to open
a studio somewhere on the West Coast because it makes
no sense to be covering sports in the East.
Speaker 5 (34:49):
Oh.
Speaker 7 (34:50):
I'm so with you on that, just because I always
tell people when you I'm sure the same thing. Like
watching football on the West Coast, there's nothing like it
because you're starting at the perfect time. It's like ten am,
nice little brunch, breakfast, get it and yeah, look look
coffee first lieu of games, and then you go one
pm and then you finish at five thirty and you're done.
(35:10):
You're just sleep by You're done football by eight thirty. Yeah,
I mean, that's that's the best part about being on the.
Speaker 5 (35:16):
Like what guess what they call it? The best coast
is the West Coast, right, So.
Speaker 7 (35:21):
Yeah, I mean it's there's no complaints about that with
with the timing because yeah, watching hockey, I mean, I know,
going out East and going the NHL Network and doing that,
you know, JD when you're watching hockey late. It's like
you feel like a zombie the next day when you're
you're up that like, well.
Speaker 4 (35:37):
It's so fast, right, so you're like you're trying to
keep your eyes and you know, I always find like
during the playoffs, it's like I can I'm a wreck
after the playoffs just because those games that go to
overtime and double overtime and you got to do shows
the next day, so you're kind of you want to
be up to date.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
You can obviously watch them in replay.
Speaker 4 (35:57):
Now we're in the twenty first century, it's twenty twenty six,
but you still want to watch it live. It's sense
to kind of feel it. But you know, getting this
some of the teams you're covering, you know, you do
some stuff with Tampa. You know, let's talk about obviously
the state of the Tampa Bay Lightning right now, and
then you know, kind of bleeding over into is tal
I wanted us to chat about and tell you jump
in as well as just the the stadium series in
(36:21):
Tampa during Gasparilla, Like that's gonna be an incredible event,
So let's start there.
Speaker 7 (36:26):
Yeah, firstly, I mean the Tampa Bay Lightning the way
they've been this season, and I'm sure you've you could agree,
and I mean you've seen you talk about it. But
you know how I mean, I put Colorado and then
I put Tampa and then I put everybody else. That's
where I think they're at this season. I think just
think they're so elite and it's weird to me that
they're so close in the standings because I don't think
(36:47):
that they're close to the other teams at all. If
it came down to a seven game series in the East,
I think you have to just talk about their depth
and what like guys like Darren Radish and Moser and
Des stew and all these guys like now you look
at their team and I arguably the best decour in
the league now with with guys with Headman and McDonough
(37:08):
out and lilla Berg and these guys that are that
are you know, not playing and even Braydon point like
Braiden points hurt and they're doing what they're doing.
Speaker 5 (37:16):
It's crazy. So I yeah, and Darren Radish, I mean,
what do you pay him right now?
Speaker 7 (37:22):
I mean, if it's me, if and this is what
I would think Julian Breeswell would do because you're playing
in Tampa. You're playing on the PP with Cooch. You know,
he's dishing it over to you all the time. You know,
what about us eight year deal around six or seven,
seven or seven to eight around there, Like you know
a little bit of security you've been you know, he's
(37:43):
been in the American League for a while, he's you know,
he's been around. Like it'd be tough to turn down.
Speaker 6 (37:49):
I Like, I was just curious, Nate, just as someone
who's familiar with the franchise. I mean, people have been
kind of for years now. I feel like totally underplaying
this franchise. They don't draft well, they don't develop well.
There are two veteran heavy you know, but clearly there's something.
You know, culture is an overused word, but there's something
(38:10):
going on there. Like I'm learning about Dominic James and
Charles Eduard dust Stus and just like the next man
up philosophy is so next level clearly with this organization,
with all the injuries they've had and how they're i mean,
they're basically running away with the division right now, and
it's a pretty good division.
Speaker 5 (38:26):
So what's going on there?
Speaker 3 (38:27):
From what you've seen?
Speaker 5 (38:29):
Yeah, I mean even from my time in Tip when
I was there.
Speaker 7 (38:31):
I mean, they were always known for their really good
scouting staff and how good they were, how how good
they were at finding players. I mean, look at bradon
Point that thinks the third round pick, the Koutrov second
round pick. I mean, you go back, you go to
Andre Palott was a seventh round pick. I mean, you
can go down the list. There's just a number of
number of guys they've they've found. And then I think,
(38:52):
you know, the it starts from the top. I think
when you have an owner that comes in Jeff Vinnick
and he kind of changes the whole culture of not just.
Speaker 5 (39:00):
The organization, but the city. The city itself has changed
in the last ten years and it's grown because of
him and how much he's done for the community. So
it starts there.
Speaker 7 (39:08):
And then you know, you had different leadership with Steve
Eiserman than Julian Breezewail, who's a tremendous GM two, and
they've they just created this you said it, this culture
there where everyone buys in, everyone knows, and and then
they know it's a winning ingredient. And because of that,
I mean, you just have players that love being there,
love playing there. Love being a part of the organization
(39:31):
and want to stay there. So I think when you
have that, it's it's a recipe for one of the
best organizations in the league. And I think they are
because that reason.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
Uh, where's the love?
Speaker 5 (39:44):
Big?
Speaker 3 (39:45):
Hold on?
Speaker 6 (39:46):
Hold, let's see if we get him back with on
one second?
Speaker 3 (39:48):
Did he get back?
Speaker 6 (39:49):
Yeah, you froze on us for a second. Yeah, just
for a little bit. So maybe just finish that thought.
We'll go on at an extend.
Speaker 5 (39:59):
I did a NHL Network radio on this three hours yesterday.
Speaker 3 (40:02):
Weird in a rivers.
Speaker 5 (40:04):
It's cool.
Speaker 3 (40:05):
Just just finished, you know, finish that thought.
Speaker 6 (40:07):
It usually records anyways, even when you freeze, so it
should be okay. But maybe just fire finish your thought
and then we'll go on from there.
Speaker 5 (40:15):
I don't know where it was at.
Speaker 3 (40:17):
I don't know what you were heading with it, but
it sounded good.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (40:20):
I was just saying, you know, Jeff Vinnick, I think
when he took over for that team, Uh, you know,
it changed everything.
Speaker 5 (40:27):
Change the leadership, change the culture.
Speaker 7 (40:29):
Because we know, we all know that when you have
a good owner, it starts there and trickles all the
way down. You can look at the Florida Panthers and
what they've done. So I think with Tampa, it starts
there and then they've had great leaders Steve Eisman and
Julian Breezewas has done an unbelievable job and just created
a culture there where players want to play there, players
want to stay there. And then you have a coach
(40:50):
like John Cooper who has evolved every year and just
made himself. I mean, I think a Jack Adams coach
this year.
Speaker 4 (40:57):
Yeah, I mean you look at their You you get
a job there and you're set for life in the NHL.
But I think like those franchises and organizations like San
Jose always put in that category because the city's you know,
smaller market, you need to be so much more creative.
Like you go to them getting you know, now shifting
over to stadium series, you go to the way that
(41:18):
they create, you know, creatively got the stadium series with
billboards after the All Star Game apparently like Betman was,
you know, taking the car out, the car service out
to the airport and then all these billboards put up
strategically to be like hey, let's do outdoor next, and
I mean talk about the atmosphere that's gonna be with
Gasparilla at Buccaneers Stadium. You know, I was on the
(41:41):
plane with Bob Chesterman, who's you know, one of the
great execs that puts together these beautiful events at the
stadium series, and even he's excited, like, if this ice
holds up, this is gonna be epic.
Speaker 5 (41:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (41:54):
I can't believe it's still that it's even still happening
at Raymond James Stadium. It's wild to me, but it's incredible,
and I think it's i mean, look the atmosphere of
the Lightning fans and the Bucks fans together and then
you know it's all it's all in one. It's gonna
be wild, and and for them to be able to
make this happen and it's unbelievable. I mean, I'm going
(42:17):
down as an alumni. Uh so I'm just gonna get
to experience it that way. So I'm really looking forward
to because I've I've never ever in my wildest dreams
that I ever think Tampa was gonna have an outdoor
game while I was playing there. It's just I never
even thought about it. And the fact that they're doing it,
which is funny. They're doing it against Boston who I was.
I was drafted by two. So it's funny.
Speaker 5 (42:37):
Both teams are there will be there for so it'll
be it'll be it'll be crazy.
Speaker 6 (42:42):
I gotta ask because you know both you guys have
played in a few of these alumni games. What's the
vibe like at these things? Like the stakes are I
imagine kind of low. Maybe there's some money on the board.
I don't know, Like, obviously, the big spectacle is the
actual NHL game this weekend, But as as someone who's
still a part of the organization, joining the rest of
the alums, what's the vibe like when you get to
(43:03):
compete in these things things.
Speaker 7 (43:06):
I don't even know what kind of competition we're going
to be doing, or how what kind of games we're
gonna be playing.
Speaker 5 (43:11):
I think we're gonna be playing in some kind of
game with.
Speaker 7 (43:14):
Maybe other fans or whatever on Sunday. But it's I mean,
more than anything in JD can attest this. You know,
when you get back with alumni or guys you've played
with or you know, previous players, there's nothing like it.
It's like being back playing again and just being with
the fellas.
Speaker 4 (43:29):
Yeah, I you've kind of made a name for yourself
and them recently. You you kind of dropped the mits
every single time I've seen your last.
Speaker 7 (43:40):
You kind of have your stage till Yeah, the I
will say the best, right, Yeah, the last two were
it was it wasn't me too.
Speaker 5 (43:48):
It was like the first one was outdoor was Barnaby.
He was like, came up to me. It was like, hey,
come on with that or whatever. I'm like, all right,
let's let's do it.
Speaker 7 (43:54):
Then the next one was at Choresy Classic and they
told me before Jordan Nolan was like, hey, you're gonna
fight Jim at this time of whatever John Rasty. I'm like, yeah, Jim,
John Rasty. So they were set up. They were set up.
Speaker 4 (44:12):
Yeah, but how close I watched that A couple of
those were getting close to Johnny. I saw the eyes
start rolling back in his head. There a couple of
those times.
Speaker 7 (44:19):
Well it was yeah, I mean I had never seen
him like up close like that before, really right, and
I was and holding on to him. I'm like, oh geez,
you know, and I could feel you're right. Actually, there
was a couple I could feel like wind like it
was hitting my face and I was like, oh boy,
if these hit me, it would be uh, lights out.
But he's uh, he's built like a absolute tank, like
(44:41):
just just like a cinder block, you know.
Speaker 5 (44:43):
So I was like, this is crazy. The guy's even
fought him.
Speaker 3 (44:47):
He's a scary, scary motherfucker man.
Speaker 4 (44:51):
But like shifting, you know, shifting to like the overarching
the league as we kind of close this out O
this great interview with Seth Jarvis is we were talking
a little bit before about the schedule and probably the
reason why you had to cancel is the schedule is crazy.
It's hard to find any time the NHL schedule already
in season, you're in a bubble, but it's very hard
to find time to kind of you know, do things
(45:13):
you want, you know, the time. Some days run away
from you and you're in this weird bubble. So but
never more so than on these years for the Olympics,
when it's when it's crazy, it's so condensed, so like,
you know, how do you and have you been you
played in an Olympic year where like the schedules condensed
like how tough it is, because I know how tough
(45:34):
it is. That we could both chop in back and
forth like you kind of just feel like you get
into this like spin cycle and you're there's like less practice.
It almost feels like for a little bit, if you
can stave off injury, that you get into this like
weird rhythm.
Speaker 3 (45:49):
But you're like just always tired.
Speaker 5 (45:52):
Yeah, you're permanently tired.
Speaker 7 (45:53):
I know exactly what you're talking about, and and uh,
I want to ask your opinion after I talked about
but because I'm curious, But yeah, I know it is
it you you you said it. You're playing at the
other day basically, and the days that you're not playing,
you know, you're off or you're going to the rink
and probably a maintenance day or something like that. Right,
you're not usually skating. But I yeah, I feel like,
(46:17):
and this is the best way to put it, and
you probably would agree, is every night is a game night,
minus the nights you play every night it's a game night.
Speaker 5 (46:25):
You're like, Okay, I got to play another game tomorrow.
Speaker 7 (46:27):
You're right, you kind of you're almost in like a
twilight zone of just playing games, and you know, you
realize what.
Speaker 5 (46:33):
Day it is, what time it is. It's just next game,
the next game, the next game.
Speaker 7 (46:36):
But that's what I was gonna ask you, like, did
you because I don't know if you saw like McDavid
came out and said, you know, I like the schedule.
Speaker 5 (46:44):
I like doing this.
Speaker 7 (46:45):
I like how we're just playing games and this and that,
Like did you like this? I know, I know, did
you like this or was it just like uncle too much?
Speaker 3 (46:54):
It's weird because you know, if the schedule was like
this and that.
Speaker 4 (46:59):
You know, again, I never listen to anything McDavid says
about the state of this date to the league or anything,
because he would he would play every single day. And
again that's him, and he's in a class like with
like the celebrinis or like that. I've heard Maclin's like that,
but there's a reason why they're superstars. I could not
have done that just mentally. I could not stay in
(47:21):
it to do it that much. You know, I needed
the time off away from the rink, like just because
you know we had talked a little bit. I dealt
with so much anxiety and stuff like that. So for me,
I was like, fuck, I can go to the rink again.
I'm crazy, Like these guys just love it, they live
for it. They're just built different. But I did I
did like less practice for sure, because you know, I
(47:42):
always loved like my pregame rituals, like I'd rather have
the practice, stay off, get a workout, and then do
morning skate. I like getting like an hour morning skate,
whereas flow drills we do some power play stuff like
I always enjoyed that on a game day versus I
know a lot of guys like the practice day and
then no morning skate. So for me, I just liked
it that we always just did morning skate when it
(48:04):
was condensed, like you're just a morning skates, so you
get into this rhythm of like, okay, it's an off day.
You go maybe get a little lyft in and you
get a son on and you get a massage and
you kind of just you warm up. But yeah, I
just for me, it just always was to your point,
and it was different like when you look back to
twenty ten, like you were playing your division what eight times? Yeah,
(48:27):
and you weren't playing any East, so the travel was
more like within your division, so it was a fucking grind.
You're playing like, oh my god, I'm playing LA for
the sixth time in twelve days, like uncle, But I
guess it's it's so tough because you know, we can
talk about schedule, I think until smoke comes out of
my ears because it's still gonna you know, the season
(48:49):
is getting longer and longer, and it is what it is.
They're trying to find a rhythm with the NHL schedule.
But you know, obviously I think some guys will like it,
but I just don't like seeing so many injuries.
Speaker 5 (49:01):
That's yeah, me, I hate it.
Speaker 7 (49:02):
I think that's a big one too for me, is
so many guys getting hurt and able and not able
to sustain the schedule.
Speaker 3 (49:08):
Like you said, yeah, Towl's got a quick HABS question.
Speaker 6 (49:14):
I got, I got to get in the habs. I'm
going there this weekend. I'm gonna trail this weekend for
my dad's birthday. My son's going to play in the
snow for the first time ever. And obviously, Nate, I
know you. You started doing uh, you know, color for
the HABS broadcast, which is very exciting. So first wanted
to hear about the transition to doing that, and second,
just getting a closer look at this team, exciting young cores,
(49:35):
all offense, no defense.
Speaker 2 (49:38):
Who's stuck out?
Speaker 6 (49:38):
But is there a particular player who stuck out for
you when you got a chance to look at them
more closely as a as a broadcaster.
Speaker 3 (49:47):
There's some defense. There's some defense that just got rid
of their goalie.
Speaker 5 (49:50):
Coach, So yeah, I saw that. Relieve, Yeah, we know
who is the issue exactly they found it? No tell that.
Speaker 7 (50:03):
To answer your first question, I had a little bit
of practice before I did those in game color. I
I got to cover the WHL Finals last May for
TSN with Medicine Hat and Spokane, So that was the
first time I've ever done in game color.
Speaker 5 (50:18):
Was was those games.
Speaker 7 (50:21):
And then did some stuff with the kings obviously between
the benches, but nothing like in game color. So to
have that practice helped doing those games for sure.
Speaker 5 (50:29):
But it was awesome.
Speaker 7 (50:30):
I mean to get to do in game color for
the Montreal Canadians, a team that I played for, and
it's it's the habs. I mean, JD can attest that
he's from there, so he knows what it's like and
the novelty behind it to do it. So it was
it was it was special, It was awesome. It was
it was a great experience. But I mean, as far
(50:50):
as their team and players, I mean, I think a guy.
Speaker 5 (50:54):
I don't know why.
Speaker 7 (50:55):
I mean, obviously it's it's obvious to pick him out,
but I think I picked him out because I just
saw how physically dominating he can be. Was Slavkovski, I
think just seeing him up close.
Speaker 3 (51:08):
Sleeping people are sleeping on him.
Speaker 5 (51:10):
Yes, and he.
Speaker 7 (51:15):
I totally agree with you because he like and yes,
Suzuki drives a play and they have all these guys.
But for me, like Slavkovski might be the most impactful
player on that team when it comes to changing a
game because he can do it in so many different ways.
And I saw that firsthand. I mean, he's was super impressive.
(51:35):
Out of all the talent they have, he was. He
was the one that really stuck out to me. And
and you could go down the list. It wasn't just him, obviously,
demied Off and Hudson and you know I named Suzuki, Cowfield,
all these guys. I mean, they have a list of
young superstars coming. But I mean this team, I think
in the next three to four years, I think they
win a Cup.
Speaker 5 (51:53):
I really do.
Speaker 3 (51:55):
Oh, I gave it the five years. He went a
little bit. He went a little bit. He kind of
undercut me there.
Speaker 4 (52:01):
Or you went five years, they went five years. Yeah,
I said I went five ers on Twitter. I think
they're Yeah, they're what they've done top to bottom. We
talk about organizations. I think they've fixed a lot in
upper management, GM, coach, they got everything in place.
Speaker 3 (52:14):
It's just going to be a matter of time. And
maybe the goaltending.
Speaker 4 (52:17):
I mean all three goalies were struggling, so sometimes you
have to look outside.
Speaker 3 (52:22):
It sucks, it's a bad job, but but it is
what it is.
Speaker 4 (52:25):
So Nate, thanks so much for coming on and Uh
be in our interview, and we're definitely gonna have you.
I think we're gonna see Maria, especially when I'm off
for the Olympics, so you'll be jumping in with Adnan
and I'll be boots on the ground sending it all
hostage in Milan with some pasta. But thanks off for
Nate Thompson and Uh. Back after the break, we got
(52:46):
cinephil and sixty with ad Nan back from a sabbatical, sixty.
Speaker 2 (52:59):
Here with Chason. I appreciate you to go.
Speaker 3 (53:02):
You go ahead, I don't have anything play well.
Speaker 1 (53:05):
I'm going to get your impact here, at least your
reaction to the Oscar nominations sixty nominations for sinners Ryan
Coogler's films, unbelievable. It sets a record. Now there's more categories.
Best Casting is now new category. It's benefited by that.
But there were some surprises. Best Supporting Actress they got nominated,
and Best Supporting Actor Delway Lindo, which was a genuine surprise.
It's the greatness of the Oscar nominations is no matter
how much closely you fall the Golden Globes, the Actor
(53:27):
Awards as I do formerly, the Segs or the baftis no.
Speaker 2 (53:30):
Matter if there's always one or two genuine surprises.
Speaker 1 (53:33):
Ago did not see that coming and I had not
see Delward Lindall getting nominated, a true dark horse in
that category, was able to get in. Tough for Paul
mescal who I did love playing Shakespeare's Hamnet, but there's
only five spots. The nomination I cared the most about
every Ciskel Nev used to do everyth they go out.
Speaker 2 (53:47):
There's one nomination you care the most about.
Speaker 1 (53:49):
What's the one, and for me it was Ethan Hockey
did get nominated for Best Actor for Blue Moon, which
I was thrilled, and the script was nominated as well.
Speaker 2 (53:55):
So it was really happy. Two nominations. Richard Linkln are
unfortunately missing out for director.
Speaker 1 (53:58):
The other one I was really happy about was it
was just an accident, the Great Iranian Film, which was
submitted by rants because the Iranian government has literally imprisoned
Jafar Panahi, the directors who has to release his film
because he's in hiding in France. But the movie was
nominated for Best International Film. He also got nomay for
Best Screenplay, so I was thrilled with that. And the
thing that I am the most thrilled with is this.
For twenty plus years, every year I watch every nominee
(54:22):
for Best Picture, Best Director, all four acting categories and
the two screenplay categories, and generally I try to get
to as much of the rest as I can editing, score, etc.
But those ones I always get. For twenty years, we're
been good and people say, how does that happen? I said, well,
you got to get out in front of it, so
you know, in May at the Canned Film Festival when
they're talking about it was just an accident, you got
to know go ahead and watch the movie then, so
it's not like January twenty second and all of a sudden.
Speaker 2 (54:42):
You have to watch all these movies. So when the.
Speaker 1 (54:44):
Nominations come out, I'm always happy, going yep, all the
Best Picture nominees seeing them, Train Dreams, Netflix, whatever, actors
seeing them, Okay, great. The thing I was happiest about
JD is I was reluctant and refusing to watch Wicked
for Good because I said, I didn't like the first one,
which was well received, and not I have to sit
through the second one, which I'm hearing is not well received.
Speaker 2 (55:02):
So I said, I don't have to.
Speaker 1 (55:03):
Suffer through two hours, but if it gets nominated for
Best Picture, or Ariana Grande is up for Best Sporting Actress,
I have to watch it. Not only was it not
nominated any of the major categories, it didn't get nominated
for anything, production design, costume design, et cetera. So I
am thrilled for the Oscars. Saved me two hours of
my life. I didn't have to watch Wicked for Good.
Well done by the Academy.
Speaker 4 (55:23):
How excited it? You're just tickle pink. You didn't even
like the first once? You're like, yeah, right, well was
it about the first one?
Speaker 2 (55:30):
The first one?
Speaker 1 (55:31):
I just thought it was really labored and drawn out,
with the exception of the final twenty minutes, which I
thought was great when Cynthia Rivo sings.
Speaker 2 (55:37):
That that last song, but mostly yeah, yeah, yeah, define
gravity as the song. But the rest of them was
just painful to get through. So I was like, I
can't like to sit through a second one.
Speaker 3 (55:47):
But now do you like Wizard of Oz?
Speaker 2 (55:49):
Do you love the Wizard of Oz?
Speaker 3 (55:50):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (55:50):
Timeless, all right, but even the music and my wife
I saw it on and we saw in Chicago, we
weren't crazy about Wicked.
Speaker 4 (55:56):
Yeah, Broadway community can't get a win, rising ticket prices
and closing shows, and now Wicked no nominated.
Speaker 2 (56:04):
Some people suggesting Sinners could be one of those movies.
Speaker 1 (56:06):
You know, you get a ton of nominations, you don't
actually win anything. Gangs of New York one of my favorites,
you know, ten nominations went oh for ten. Killers of
the Flower Moon got a ton of nominations, shut out.
The Irishman, one of my favorites, Oh for ten at
the Oscars. So just because you get a lot of
nominations doesn't mean you're gonna not gonna win.
Speaker 2 (56:22):
I don't think it goes oh for sixteen.
Speaker 1 (56:23):
To be clear, I think Coogler wins Best Original Screenplay,
but I still don't have it as the favorite. I
do think one Battle after another is gonna win. I
think Petanna is gonna win Best Director. But it's crazy
to think JD to your point when she's the Wizard
of Oz. If someone said to you, like years from
now and you look at history and say, okay, what
film got the most nominations of all time? The Godfather,
Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, No Sinners? What this horror
(56:43):
movie that came up from Mike Good that got the
most dominations?
Speaker 3 (56:46):
Not Good?
Speaker 2 (56:47):
You didn't like it at all?
Speaker 4 (56:48):
No, They're like, there was some fun, interesting parts of it,
but again it's like, I don't know, it's just to me,
I thought it was a good movie. Yeah, but to me,
it's not like this sixteen nomination chucker fucking movie. Yeah
about whatever the hell this was about where they're stealing
souls and stuff like that and taking the singing. I
(57:11):
like the music, and I think they should win, you know,
Best Musical Score like all that stuff.
Speaker 3 (57:16):
I think they should win, and and set design. But
I mean it was interesting. There's yeah, there's stuff that
I think they should win, but sixteen nominations.
Speaker 1 (57:25):
They're just showing white people are vampires, just sucking the
blood of the black music.
Speaker 2 (57:29):
Tell your thoughts in the Oscar nominations.
Speaker 3 (57:32):
Well, my first text to you, Ed I was flowers
for Delroy Lindo.
Speaker 6 (57:36):
I love it when when an actor who he've kind
of always enjoyed, and it seems to he's had a
great career, finally gets an acknowledgment. We saw it a
few years ago with excuse me, Sam Elliott when he
was in A Star is Born. And I feel like,
I don't know how these things work and how they
decide who wins. I'm not saying Delroy Lindo was gonna
win an Oscar, but he's someone who I've loved for
(57:57):
a long time. I really liked Sinners and loved him
in it, and I'm just excited to see him that
he's going to be there.
Speaker 3 (58:04):
You know, what do you like about it?
Speaker 6 (58:07):
I enjoyed the story. I liked I liked the I
like the action. I like this original premise. I like
basically so I also like the subtext. Listen, the subtext
here is that the African American contribution culturally to the world,
which was born out of this out of slavery is unmatched. Right,
(58:32):
How blues led to jazz led to soul led to
hip hop and that's the culture, that's what defines culture
around the world. That's kind of we don't need to
dig too far into it, but that's you know, there's
the big scene that has been very divisive among critics
from from Sinners that everyone talks about, the big dance scene.
Speaker 2 (58:48):
I loved it.
Speaker 3 (58:49):
I like the idea behind it.
Speaker 5 (58:51):
I'm a big.
Speaker 6 (58:52):
Cooglar guy, big Michael B. Jordan, I'm all in on Sinners.
I don't know if it'll win in any Oscars, but
it's cool to see a film that's a bit more
of a popcorn movie get acknowledged at the Oscars.
Speaker 1 (59:03):
Yeah, I will say that as far it was like
big budget movies. I mean one Battle of No Hat
of a big budget you know, made over one hundred
million dollars. That's getting thirteen nominations. Sinners to Tallas Point.
That's a gigantic movie. I mean it made a ton
of way. This is not one of those years like
oh the independent movies broke through. Yes, there's a handnit
which is being recognized, which is a great film. I
really hope Jesse Buckley wins for Best Actress. Yes, trained
dream says get in a film on Netflix. Jewel Edgerton
small quiet movie, but like big budget blockbusters did well,
(59:25):
sequels did not. Though Wicked for Good ignored as was Avatar,
the Academy clearly saying we're tired of blue people, like
how many more movies.
Speaker 2 (59:32):
Does James Cameron want to make? Like enough, We're not
gonna give you another Best Picture nomination?
Speaker 3 (59:35):
What the what was the line in the famous line
and sinners there he licked mccoo's.
Speaker 1 (59:39):
And well, he said, he asked about to eat posty,
so he said, it's like eating an ice cream cone.
Speaker 3 (59:44):
And then Haley stein what's Hailey Steinfeld's line?
Speaker 5 (59:47):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (59:47):
I just remember the one woman is walking mccoo's and
my knees with shake or something like that.
Speaker 4 (59:52):
Anyway, good music, good movie. Congratulations Delroy Lindo, though I
do agree. Be nice to see him get his flowers.
Speaker 2 (59:59):
You saw Marty Supreme Gaty, what else are you gonna
see now?
Speaker 5 (01:00:01):
Like?
Speaker 1 (01:00:02):
And once the nominations come out, people end up seeing
more movies. You Jill, So okay now that this gott
nomin we're gonna go watch this Blue Moon.
Speaker 3 (01:00:07):
Perhaps, Yeah, what would you recommend?
Speaker 2 (01:00:11):
I'm gonna tell you right now, it's an actor. Jill's
gonna love Blue Moon.
Speaker 1 (01:00:14):
I'm telling you it's just an Ethana Hawk one act play.
There's no way she's not as an actor. She'll appreciate
how good is acting?
Speaker 5 (01:00:19):
Is that movie? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:00:20):
I like Ethan Hawk, He's good.
Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
Blue Moon, you guys obviously, Yeah, all right, Blue Moon?
Speaker 3 (01:00:25):
I seen Marty, I saw, I saw one battle after another.
Speaker 2 (01:00:29):
Right, also recommend Hamnet for you too.
Speaker 3 (01:00:32):
Hamlet Shakespeare wanting to go Shakespeare.
Speaker 2 (01:00:35):
I want ad Jason to her his Hamnet revealing right now?
Speaker 3 (01:00:39):
Like it? Okay?
Speaker 5 (01:00:40):
Thanks?
Speaker 2 (01:00:40):
Step Olympic not to that is a question. Well, that's
a big question. I understand.
Speaker 1 (01:00:46):
I thought it was Hamlet. They go to the movie
is called Hamnet. I go, No, you have to watch
the movie. But yes, it is based in the creation
of Hamlet.
Speaker 5 (01:00:52):
But is ham Net?
Speaker 2 (01:00:53):
As far as the Olympic replacements are concerned.
Speaker 1 (01:00:55):
Just a few weeks after the Olympics already geting announcements,
Jackson Lacombe will play Seth Jones. We love Jonesy, Guysavenhell
in scriptive for the Americans, but la Combe is in.
Just watched him on the Ducks on Monday. Announcements aren't
likely to end there. Bradon Point remains out the leg
injury participation is in question. Swedes already decimate of injuries.
Victor Hedman, Gabriel Landeskogg could miss the ternament. Leo Carlson,
(01:01:16):
Uncle Leo, and Jonas brodyin confirmed out, replaced by Marcus
Johanson and Hampus Linnholm. What do you make JUDI like,
imagine you're in this situation where you know you're a
bubble guy, you got cut and you get the call
you're in. That's thrilling, But I just imagine what it's
like to go the other way and you feel like
this is the moment you've always dreamt of to play
for your country. You played for Canady. You know what
that's like to not have the opportunity. I really feel
(01:01:37):
for these guys to have this happen so close to
the end of the race.
Speaker 4 (01:01:40):
Yeah, it's tough with the schedule. I mean, it's out
of your control, so it's really tough. I mean, if
I was on the bubble, I'd be targeting every single
player that was ahead of me and just be just.
Speaker 2 (01:01:51):
A foodoo doll, just poking pins. Hope this guy gets
hurt tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:01:54):
Yeah, just one kill after another. Just make sure I
get myself there every day. I have every game circle.
Speaker 3 (01:02:00):
Uh no, I listen. It's it's tough, it's amazing.
Speaker 4 (01:02:03):
It's such ann to represent your country, and you know,
I'm sure these guys are gutted, but at the end
of the day, you know it's out of your control.
Speaker 3 (01:02:11):
Nothing you can do. But yeah, it's it's gotta sucking.
Speaker 4 (01:02:14):
You gotta think about the amount of guys that are
playing through injuries right now to get there, because you're
at that kind of weird spot where you kind of
probably have something that's going on a little bit and
you're not telling anyone. You're not necessarily telling youone. It'll
be like, oh, it's not as bad as it seems.
Just to get yourself the Olympics, you can play. So
I'm sure there's a lot of that. I mean, this
season with injuries has been crazy. The league's been decimated
(01:02:37):
by injuries.
Speaker 3 (01:02:38):
It's been a lot. The schedule's tough.
Speaker 1 (01:02:40):
It's gonna be crazy to commit to the Olympic breaking Okay,
this is a spread. They're gonna be playing every other day,
you know whatever, thirty games in two months.
Speaker 2 (01:02:45):
It's just going to be absurd.
Speaker 1 (01:02:47):
HL outdoor Game. We don't usually talk about HL regular
season games. We want to talk about Sheolut the players
who can play in the outdoor game and Hastings, Minnesota.
On Friday night, Zach Luu scored the ot winner to
give the Milwaukee Admirals three two win or the Iowa
Wild outdoor game play at the Heroes Little Complex.
Speaker 3 (01:03:03):
You got me there, Zach LaRue.
Speaker 1 (01:03:09):
The temperature at puck drop minus eight degrees fahrenheit. That's
the coldest outdoor game ever played in either the HL
or NHL. One point, the power went out and two
different generations fail before the third one finally got to generate.
Excuse me, third one finally got the power back on
the third period. Like, at what point you do again?
We all played hockey growing up. You played at the
(01:03:30):
highest level. I played at the lowest level. We've all
played outdoor hockey, played on ponds, had a good time.
Speaker 2 (01:03:35):
At what point you go, Hey, this is not reminded
of my youth. I think this just sucks. I'm gonna
pack it in.
Speaker 4 (01:03:40):
Yeah, all words salads aside. It's when it's too cold,
it's too cold, and when it's it's it. There is
a level where it gets a little bit too nippy
and you're in your nutskull all the way they disappear
and you're like, no, not for me anymore, and you're like,
you know, when you're I always say when it's really cold,
you'll have it's like when you're leg like your quads
and your legs are like they're starting to feel cold
(01:04:03):
and like it's like almost hurting. You're like too much,
and then your feet go numb. I mean, those are
the beautiful moments of outdoor hockey, like when you're you
think back, like I remember, I don't know how many
times I was on the outel rink till my I
couldn't feel my toes and I was limping home but
just would not come off the ice. So but yeah,
for there's levels where it's just it's now, I'd be
(01:04:23):
like fuck that, no chance. So yeah, and especially for
like you're in the jungle on the you know, on
the iron lung on the greyhound bus playing in this
style of game and you're probably like, what the hell
am I doing here making fifty grand a year.
Speaker 1 (01:04:40):
That's a good point with the quad star quivering, because
like fingers and toes always get cold pretty much immiately.
Speaker 2 (01:04:44):
But if your quad start shaking, like, oh my god,
that's that's a different level of cold.
Speaker 1 (01:04:47):
It's time to hand out some flowers. I know you
were particularly passionate about this one. To Sabers captain Raspus Doleen,
real adversity he's dealing with at Home's wife Carolina almost
lost her life due to a heart condition, revealed an
Instagram messages. This week, the couple lost their unborn child.
Doleen responded to Tuesday night dominant, three goal, five point night.
Incredible showing with the Sabers captain.
Speaker 4 (01:05:06):
Yeah, he's he's really kind of shouldered this team this season,
and he's really showed a level of leadership and calmness,
and I mean his game has gotten to another level.
So but I mean, I can't imagine going through that
playing in the season. You know, there's a couple of
guys I played with that's went through that, that had
something like that happen, and you really lean on your
(01:05:28):
teammates in those moments, and you lean on the guys
around you and and your support system, and I think
he's done that and he really you know, I saw
comment from last night him he really talked very nicely
about the team and how those guys are his brothers
and they've really supported him. So I think as an organization,
it just you realize in those moments that you know,
there's a lot of things bigger than hockey, and we
(01:05:48):
play a game and you know it's we make it
high stakes, and but you know, amazing to see what
he's been able to do this season, and especially last night,
I mean, he was He's been so fun to watch.
Speaker 3 (01:05:59):
I watch a lot of their games.
Speaker 4 (01:06:00):
You know, they're they play an exciting brand of hockey,
but he's kind of found another level that I think
we've all thought he could get to and we're wondering
when he was going to get there. Is like the
elite top five NHL defenseman, and you were seeing it
like he's he's he's playing some amazing hockey, and you know,
just thoughts go out to his family and to his wife,
(01:06:21):
and you know, I'm sure they're going to have a beautiful,
big family in years to come, and they're going to
be all good, so well.
Speaker 2 (01:06:29):
Said, let's send us some flowers.
Speaker 1 (01:06:31):
Evan Bouchard four hundred regular season game, just the fourth
defense when the history has scored three goals and three assists.
Only others to do it Bobby Orr, Tom Blaydon and
Doug Crossman. Shock that Crossman did that, by the way,
achieving that feat. He did it with the Lightning in
nineteen ninety two in just the sixteenth game in Francise history.
Good research at the tell Bouchard's achievement so impressive. Connor
McDavid five point game, including the overtime winner against Washington.
Speaker 2 (01:06:53):
Nobody even cared.
Speaker 1 (01:06:54):
Matias ACoM got three goals at the game on Amazon
Prime in Canada Monday night against the Ducks, first time
in NHL history that team has had defenseman score hat
tricks and consecutive games. You always talk with mc even
in drystyle, but this Edmonton defense, Chris Knablocks got these
guys fired up, joining the rush, scoring taking shots.
Speaker 2 (01:07:10):
Unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (01:07:10):
And Bouchard gets shit on so much by people because
his defense. No block told me he goes. It's been
two months, he goes. Since December onet he's given up
one turnover which led to a goal because everyone has
to crush this guy. How about he is defensively but
that is not the case, and we have evidence on
this for two months now. He hasn't done it an offensive.
He's a one a game player and he's not representing
Team Canada. Unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (01:07:30):
Yeah, the Team Canada picks some defense are starting to
look there's some guys that were left off. I mean
Chickering and Bouchard for one. You know they're playing a
lot better than the other guys, but you know, familiarity
seems to work with Team Canada. Once you're in the club,
you're in the club. But Bouchard's story arc every season
is the best. He starts the season got awful, everybody
hates him, says he's overpaid. Then here's this weird little lull,
(01:07:53):
and then all of a sudden, he goes in a
fucking heater. Yeah, and like has more points than God
and gets to the playoffs. They'll probably make it to
the finals, and then he'll make it turnover and everybody's
gonna say he's overpaid again, and then we restart the
story again. But it's every season he's the most talked
about defenseman, Like he's one of the more, if not
the most polarizing defenseman in the NHL.
Speaker 2 (01:08:16):
And you think that's for a combination of things.
Speaker 1 (01:08:18):
One, it's that he makes a lot of money, he
plays in a big market, and because even his game
is polarizing.
Speaker 2 (01:08:24):
As you said, he himself is streaky.
Speaker 1 (01:08:26):
So if you're streaking, you get paid a lot of money,
and you're in a big market, then naturally people are
going to coming at you.
Speaker 3 (01:08:30):
Yeah, he's but he's here.
Speaker 4 (01:08:32):
He's no heartbeat in a good way, like he's able
to let that roll off his back. He takes a
lot of shit, man, and he just keeps on ticking.
Speaker 2 (01:08:42):
Bouche bomps, getting it done.
Speaker 1 (01:08:43):
