Speaker 1 (00:07):
It's part of the ooze and ohs Fourth of July weekend.

Speaker 2 (00:11):

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Joe Joe What U buddy A feeling good?

Speaker 3 (00:37):
I was gonna say, going for title number eighteen? Now
I gotta ask your name now that this is not,
you know, the early days of Joey Chestnut. You're the goat.
We jokingly say the four majors football, Baseball, basketball, at
hot dog eating and there's Joey Chestnut going for number eighteen.
When have you used I'm Joey Chestnut to get out

(00:57):
of something or to get in somewhere. Have any funny
stories where you've someone's record.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
If you ever use the word do you know who
I am. Don't use that line and trust me.

Speaker 5 (01:10):
Or anything if you're lying.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
If we see.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
Body can't foot in, Yeah, no really I would imagine
maybe that's how about to throw a first pitch or
something cool like that.

Speaker 4 (01:20):
I mean, yeah, they invite me. I don't tell them
for it. But I've had some good Oh my god,
I've been super lucky and by yeah, some awesome first
pitches and backstage with see rock bands and uh, it's
been really it's been.

Speaker 5 (01:36):
I've had a really good time.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Okay, so hold on, I gotta be honest with you.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
I love you.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Joey Chestnut.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
You walk into a restaurant, right and I know you
got people that maybe do this stuff for you sometimes,
but they're packed and the like, we're sorry, sir, we
have no did you make a reservation?

Speaker 2 (01:52):
You'll say maybe, Joey Chestnut, maybe maybe.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
You don't do that out of the bar, and then
you have a drink with the bartender, and the bartender
then tells the people at the restaurant manager who you are.

Speaker 5 (02:06):
You know, yeah, who you are?

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Yeah? Comno, you know that's what you never you never say,
do you know who I am? I'm just saying I
feel like along the way, like you said, there's perks
of being Joey Chess that Joey. Is there any random athlete, celebrity,
musician that you were shocked to find out as a
big fan of what you do, Like like, oh wow,
like that guy knows me.

Speaker 5 (02:23):
No.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
I was at a film festival and so this this
woman comes up to me and she's like, you know,
I'm the.

Speaker 5 (02:29):
Press secretary for mister Crystal and he would love to
meet you.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
And they were talking about Billy Crystal, the legendary actor comedian,
and I was I was really shocked and even knew
who I was.

Speaker 5 (02:41):
So that was that was that took me back there that.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
It is pretty amazing.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Man.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
We're here with the great Joey Chestnut.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Everybody's excited about watching him go for eighteen this weekend.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Now, you know, we say you're the goat. You are
the goat.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
And I'm wondering besides perks and name drops, even though
you say you can't do that, and I agree, when
it comes to endorsements, what sort of endorsements come with
a guy like Joey chest Now, like NBA, there's obviously
a sneaker, but do people approach Joey Chestnut for a
sneaker deal and stuff like that, like do you got
your eyes on other things? Do you have a dream endorsement?

(03:14):
How does that work in your world?

Speaker 5 (03:16):
I haven't had a sneaker deal yet.

Speaker 4 (03:17):
You you would think a sneaker company would be smart
and really like, hey, the guy who can eat the
most hot dogs? Like people don't want not everybody's slam
dunk in a basketball.

Speaker 5 (03:28):
You need to wear the shoe that the guy can eat.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
And you should have been able to be able to
function and eat.

Speaker 5 (03:35):
That's that's more important.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
And you need some company shoes.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
You got to walk off all those hot dog calories afterward, right, I.

Speaker 5 (03:42):
Mean you get those steps.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
Joey, we talked about how many hot dogs you eat,
and we in the other day we tried to put
in perspective, what's your record aget how many and ten minutes.

Speaker 5 (03:53):
Seventy six dogs and ten minutes.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
Time seventy six. We were wondering, like the average guy
that has a pretty good appetite that when he's with
his buddies he could eat a lot ten minutes. Is
ten hot dogs in ten minutes even preposterous? Or is
that realistic for like a regular guy with a good appetite.

Speaker 4 (04:11):
Most well, yeah, it's doable for almost anybody. I think
women can do it. It's uh not that like women
should do less, Like I think anybody should be able
to do.

Speaker 5 (04:20):
Ten hot dogs in ten minutes. I uh, yeah, it's
not that hard.

Speaker 4 (04:24):
It's just like we were just so used to eating
so casually and we have If you eat with a
little bit of sense of urgency, if you've had a
real job where you only get a certain kind of
time to eat, you you can eat.

Speaker 5 (04:37):
You can put down some food in ten minutes.

Speaker 3 (04:39):
Yeah, I thought I thought ten and ten seem pretty
sand there. When does it get impressive?

Speaker 5 (04:42):
Way?

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Like? Wow, twenty is like where where's the number where
people start to go ooh?

Speaker 4 (04:47):
Twenty twenty is where you start. Yeah, that's the real
dogs they got. They got some dog in them. Dog
getting me like a joke, Like you gotta like a dog.
You got to you got to attack the food. You
gotta be a little primal in order to get to twenty.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Joey, does it did it take a take time to
get used to like dipping the bun in water, because
I've I've done the whole. I wonder what this is
like In the minute I dipped, I tried it. I
dipped the hot doug in the bunt. I'm like, look,
they like the saggi bun. Do you ever get used
to soggy buns?

Speaker 5 (05:14):
Yeah? It took forever. Yeah, I'm not a psycho, but
I don't it would No.

Speaker 4 (05:21):
No, I really tried not to do it, but it
makes sense when you really start looking at it. It
takes the air out of the bond. The hot water
I'm usually like really warm water, so it helps. It
helps everything relax, helps your muscle relax, and gets the
food to start just digesting quickly.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Hey Joey, of course I don't want to bring up
the downtimes in your career because most of it has
been kick ass and you're the champion. But what happened
when you no no, I don't no, no no, But
like what happens when you lost? Like, was it one
of those days where you're like, you know, that just
wasn't my day because most of the time you dominated bad.

Speaker 4 (05:58):
Couple of months, well, the year before I got yet,
I was engaged and I was supposed to get married
in June, so I was like I wasn't having the
best year, and uh I went into the fourth of July.
I uh yeah, we ended up calling off the engagement
and calling off the wedding, and uh, my head wasn't
in the right place.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
So it was more it was it mental preparation or
both in that In that case, it was you know what.

Speaker 5 (06:23):
There was preparation. I was getting complacent.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
I uh and and you know, you know that's those
are lame excueses. The truth is Matt Stoney was hungrier,
he ate more than me that that day. And uh,
he's an awesome eater. And I should have if I
wanted to win, I that that year. I I didn't
need enough to win.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
And honestly, god that long back the next year. Hell yeah,
that's a it's an amazing story. But do you still
dwell on that a little bit? Like, damn it, Matt Stoney,
even though you're giving him as props, Now, is there
a part of you there?

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Are you just Hey, it was his year.

Speaker 4 (07:01):
It's it's it's not even that. Sorry, Like I know,
good things came out of it. I like I went
back to the table, went back to the drawing board,
and came back super hungry, like for years and years
I had n't crossed the seventy mark. And as soon
as I came back after I lost, the next year,
I went about seventy hot dogs for the first time ever.

(07:22):
So losing, yeah, making mistakes and uh, it's far life
and learning from him and coming back better from.

Speaker 5 (07:31):
Him, as that's what we all try to do.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
That being said, who's your biggest competition tomorrow?

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Or do you not even look at it that way?
How does that work for you?

Speaker 4 (07:41):
I mean my competition as like an actual competitor. Uh,
there's there's there's Pat, Pat Bordoletti. He's a great competitor.
My competition. It's me versus numbers, me versus the weather,
me versus the dogs. I'm trying to get, trying to
me versus old man father to I'm getting older, so

(08:01):
I want to get it'd be great to get a
record at forty two I hit that seventy six dog mark.

Speaker 5 (08:08):
But we'll see, we'll see if I got it in me.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
Yeah, Joey, that's it's it's wild to think like Lebron James,
he's playing one more year. By the way, do you
have any thoughts of where Lebron James ends up. He
says he's open to to anywhere.

Speaker 5 (08:23):
Yeah, come on, really he wants to go back to Cleveland.

Speaker 4 (08:28):
He has to say that he'll go anywhere, but he
really wants to finish in Cleveland, be a mentor.

Speaker 5 (08:33):
And and and I feel like there's he has a
connection there that.

Speaker 4 (08:39):
Nobody Yeah, he but he like on paper, he has
to say he's open to go anywhere right now.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
Now, Lebron again, one more year, but he could probably
play more than one more year because he's he's still
playing at an elite level. Is Joey Chesnut going to
walk away from hot dog eating when people start beating
him or when it's like I've got nothing more to
prove because she's got nothing more proof now, like are
you gonna slow down? Is it gonna be one of
those like one year I've won my twenty fifth in

(09:05):
a row, good night, Everyone like, well, what's what's the
Joey Chess don't plan.

Speaker 5 (09:11):
I don't think anybody's special.

Speaker 4 (09:12):
And no, I really believe that there's gonna be a
point in time where there's some animal, competitive eater who's
gonna come out and he's gonna he's gonna.

Speaker 5 (09:21):
Put me down.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
I won't have I won't have to go point five years.
But if they beat me once and then I'll have
to try to try to beat them and get get
it back. But uh, we'll see what happens. I'm taking
it one day at a time, one dog at a time,
and uh, dude, fourth of July tomorrow, it's gonna beautiful.

Speaker 5 (09:39):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
I can't wait to watch Man Traditions Joey Chestnut with
Covino and Rich. We're going to a listener question right now.
He's an amateur eater himself. Greg Mercer and Pittsburgh say,
it's going to be one hundred degrees tomorrow in Coney Island.
Have you been training and eating in the heat to
acclimate and how much? What's more difficult is it for

(10:01):
you in your sport when it's hot like that?

Speaker 5 (10:04):
Yeah? I actually I went to Florida.

Speaker 4 (10:06):
I did one practice in Florida and it was really
really hot and sticky, and numbers went down a little bit.
But I was really happy with how I performed. And
I feel like it's highly unlikely that's going to help.
It could hurt a little bit, but it's gonna I

(10:28):
if I get good dogs. Oh my god.

Speaker 5 (10:31):
If the dogs are great, the buns aren't stale. We
can be looking.

Speaker 4 (10:36):
I feel like that everything. The seventy six is still
in reach.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
Hey, by the way, that's your record, seventy six. Obviously
the country started in seventeen seventy six?

Speaker 2 (10:46):
Is that the magic number?

Speaker 1 (10:48):
Like, if you go seventy seven and you got more
in you, do you stop at seventy six just to
be like seventy six as we celebrate two hundred and
fifty years?

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Is that it? Or do you want to break your
own record?

Speaker 4 (10:58):
I'm saying if I hit seventy six, I'm saying I
did it on purpose. They Honestly, when I'm in the zone,
I have no control. My brain is a brain's not
really working, and I'm just gonna there's Yeah, I'm just
gonna go until it go until they stopped me.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
Joey, can you take us through one of the coolest
Joey chest up moments of all time? When your mid
competition and some dufist jumps on stage, some Jebbroni gets
in your face and you have to fight him off
and whoop his ass. Can you bring us through that moment?

Speaker 5 (11:30):
Oh my god, so it was kind of It's a blur.

Speaker 4 (11:33):
All I remember really is like thinking that the people
who give hot dogs they bumped into me really hard,
and I was like, oh, they bumped into me hard.

Speaker 5 (11:40):
And then then I don't even remember grabbing the guy,
but I and then I remember like apparently I grabbed
him by the neck a little bit and he fell
to the ground and uh uh.

Speaker 4 (11:51):
But then then I'm like, oh my god, the conscience
still going. So I had to eat the hot dogs
over my hand and just keep going. But uh, yeah,
he was a protester.

Speaker 5 (12:01):
He didn't need light.

Speaker 4 (12:02):
Fact factory farms. Factory farms aren't too cool. But yeah,
he shouldn't have got them on stage.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
Man, I wish you were available for some of the
protesters out here causing traffic jams, like send Joey Chestnut
up there.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
Put them in a headline.

Speaker 5 (12:17):
I'm way better eating.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
Is it true, Joey Chestnut?

Speaker 3 (12:22):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (12:23):
This is another listener question is Mark and Colorado. Is
it true that you sent every text ending with a
hot dog emoji? Is that true?

Speaker 3 (12:30):
No?

Speaker 5 (12:32):
No, no, no.

Speaker 4 (12:33):
I send a good number of them with a hot
dog about and there's times where I end with so
many hot dog emojis like my record seventy six hot
dogs I heard.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
Remember seventy six emojis.

Speaker 3 (12:50):
That I was gonna say, Joey, Joey Chestnut. Now I
have a question. When you do the Nathan's Hot Dog
Eating Contest every year, you get it, you get a belt.

Speaker 5 (13:00):
Correct, you have belts, belts up the wazoo.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
As I say, because I can only imagine, Like you know,
sometimes you go to someone's house and maybe they won
some nice award. You know, do you have them display
different room where it's like the trophy room of Joey Chestnut.

Speaker 5 (13:15):
I have.

Speaker 4 (13:15):
I have my office which is like a trophy room.
I have a couple of friends who own restaurants. They
display a couple of belts, the belts. They're the dude,
they've gotten better. Over there's Nathan's and they're the sponsors
of They keep still sapping it up and it gives
me more reason to get a new belt.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
It's Covino and rich In for the Great Dan Patrick
Fourth of July weekend, So we bring you the best.
Joey Chestnut is the best and he's going for title
eighteen this weekend. You know you got it. Let's say
you got it. We got to assume you got this
and you got more in you. How many more do
you think you got in you? And what do you
want Joey's Chestnut's legacy to be like a deeper question. Yeah,

(14:00):
but yeah, because you've been doing it so long, man,
you're synonymous with everybody knows. I.

Speaker 4 (14:06):
Oh, I don't know legacy. I think I think that's Uh.
I'm not looking for lazy. I'm just I'm just having
doing what I love to do. I love eating, I
love beating the heck out of people in competition, and.

Speaker 5 (14:19):
Uh, it just fun. I get to travel and just
have a blast.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
And I consider myself just super lucky, a lot of
a lot of I I you know, I would have
school for engineering. That's a real job, working construction, dealing
with like change orders and other people's money.

Speaker 5 (14:37):
It's like, dude, it's stressful.

Speaker 4 (14:39):
This I'm the best think there is and I'm gonna
ride this thing until the wheels fall off.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
Well, Joey Chested synonymous with the fourth of July.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
One last question.

Speaker 3 (14:48):
We'll let you go and people could, uh, we'll let
you know where everyone could check out Joey Tomorrow, an
annual tradition. Is there one food that you're like, yeah,
I'm not eating this in mass amounts. Is there something
you've tried to do a competition with and you're like, no,
this is this is just not I'm not doing it.

Speaker 5 (15:03):
Oh my god.

Speaker 4 (15:04):
So every every you've heard of this mayonnaise bowl that
they have every now and then, people are like, oh
my god, we want you eat mayonnaise in mass quantities.

Speaker 5 (15:12):
I'm like, oh no, that that that.

Speaker 4 (15:15):
I think straight mayonnaise. Anybody who eats straight mayonnaise it
should be legal.

Speaker 5 (15:21):
Yeah it's not. It's not okay. Uh. And then yeah,
mayonnaise is all right on b l T.

Speaker 4 (15:27):
But the mass quantities of mayonnaise, it's uh, it's something
I've turned down again in the game.

Speaker 3 (15:33):
Yeah, I don't blame you on that one.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
Our producer Danny g has one last question. You said,
if you get good dogs tomorrow, if you get good dogs,
and we're all hoping for great buns the whole weekend,
we want great buns. Right, If you got a dog,
what's the best way to cook a hot dog for
the people getting ready for their big cookout this weekend.

Speaker 4 (15:51):
Joey, Oh yeah, oh you know, I at home. I
love it over charcoal, real charcoal grill.

Speaker 5 (15:59):
That's great.

Speaker 4 (16:00):
If the gas grill is awesome, flat top griddle, Oh
that's tiss it's really good.

Speaker 5 (16:06):
Yeah, but anything about boiled dogs, you know it boiled.
Keep the dirty water dogs out of my fourth and
July celebration.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
All right, man, Hey, we wish you the best. We
know you've got it. You're the man. We appreciate you
being here again for people to keep in mind. He
has the record seventy six. As you know, we celebrate
seventeen seventy six, seventy six dogs in ten minutes. What
does he get Tomorrow? Is gonna be on ESPN two
starting neon eastern right, and as sim will cast it

(16:38):
on ABC. Give us the details, man, because we all
want to tune in and root you on.

Speaker 5 (16:41):
Oh yeah, it's gonna be yeah, live on you on ABC.

Speaker 4 (16:44):
I think twelve thirty Eastern time and ESPN or ESPN
two is it starting at twelve? Yeah, And it's gonna
it's gonna be This is gonna be one for the
record books, and it's gonna be hot, humid, but we're
gonna be pushing hard and I'm gonna ignore every feeling
in my body to come out on top.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
And you're going to the weigh in right now.

Speaker 4 (17:06):
Oh, on my way to the weigh in, they're gonna
weigh my fat body and hopefully yeah, you know, I'm
feeling light.

Speaker 5 (17:13):
Actually, I'm feeling pretty good.

Speaker 4 (17:14):
There's a room for seventy five to eighty hot dogs.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
We'll see what happen, Joey, real quick, if you weigh
yourself right before and after the seventy six dogs, how
much how much do you put on? Like is it?
What's the sizable difference on a scale before and after.

Speaker 4 (17:29):
The hot dogs by themselselves? Like seventy five hot dogs
by themselves. I want to say, weighs seventeen pounds. And
then during the contest, I'm taking it about a gallon
of at least a gallon of water, So we're talking.

Speaker 5 (17:42):
Twenty four to twenty five pounds and that ten minutes.

Speaker 4 (17:47):
But I'm sweating like an am, so I lose a
little bit of sweat and gaining all the water. So
I think twenty five twenty six pounds would be a
would be a record weight.

Speaker 3 (17:56):
Oh my god. Well, hey, good luck tomorrow. We love
having you on. Joey A good annual tradition. We appreciate
you giving us time.

Speaker 5 (18:02):
My friend, great talking to guys.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
Have a great week.
