Matt Leinart grew up without travel ball, year-round showcases, or a coach telling an eight-year-old to pick one sport, and now he has two boys in the middle of all of it. The Big Noon Kickoff analyst joins Steve Covino and Rich Davis on Overpromised on behalf of DraftKings Gameday with a blunt message for parents: if a coach tells your kid he can only play one thing, get away from that coach, because the cream rises to the top eventually no matter what sport a kid lands on. It turns into a full throwback episode from there. Leinart gets into the 6U All-Star grind, how the Throwbacks podcast with Jerry Ferrara came together over one long phone call, the one social media trend his wife still cannot get him to do, and the theory that you cannot really know who you are dating until you have watched them survive a football season.

Then Covino and Rich open the 80s and 90s vault for a crush draft that runs from Alyssa Milano and Mona to Samantha Fox, Kim Fields, Miss Elizabeth, Elisabeth Shue and the number one answer on the board, before closing on Carrie Underwood's 14th year of Sunday Night Football and the first NFL bet of the season.

Overpromised is the weekly uncensored bonus pod from the Covino and Rich Show, weekdays 5-7 PM ET on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
From Big Noon Kickoff and Throwbacks with Jerry Ferrara.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
He's a football tycoon. Let's welcome Matt Leinert to the show.
What's up, Matt?

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Happy to be on, man.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
I was going to say, you got all this stuff
going on.

Speaker 4 (00:29):
How do you have time to be sports dad? Because
I did bump into you this past summer at 6U All-Stars,
and there you are being the sports dad.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
You're right, we did.

Speaker 5 (00:39):
Yeah. As you know, it's the best gift in the world.
My boy just started making the All-Stars, which is pretty awesome.
I got a five-year-old in the pipeline who's pretty good, too.
I think next summer, I'm going to be spread real thin,
but it's.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
What it's all about, man.

Speaker 5 (00:56):
Just watching them, coaching them, play sports.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
My daughter is going to be two in February, so
I'm doing the whole girl, dad.

Speaker 5 (01:03):
I don't even know the girl sport thing. I'm going
to be doing that in a couple of years, but
it's all good, man.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
There's nothing better.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
I noticed his team. They had matching cleats and everything
like that. Like South Bay was legit. You guys, you
guys did pretty well.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Were you feeling the heat? I was feeling the heat, man.

Speaker 5 (01:17):
Yeah. I want to say shout out to Alison Quinn,
our team mom.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
She's a, I would say she's great. She's all in.

Speaker 5 (01:25):
She's like, we're going to get matching cleats. We're going
to do all this, but You know what? Especially at
this age, it makes it fun, dude. The boys were
so excited. And it was a great year, man. We
made it to the World Series. I mean, 6U World Series.
Competed really well all summer.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
It was a blast.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
Matt Leiner with Covino and Rich Over Promise, super involved parent, right?
Kids are crazy. You got college football coming up. You
got the podcast with Jerry Ferrara. How does that friendship begin?
And do you get discounts at Fat Sal's?

Speaker 2 (01:55):
I want to know because he's co-owner there at the
sandwich shop. How does that relationship even start?

Speaker 5 (02:00):
Man, the short story is I was kind of dabbling
into getting into the podcast space. Never did it before.
Kind of was talking to people. It would make sense
to do it with someone like a host, right? Someone
that makes sense to do it with. And at the
same time, Jerry was kind of looking for a co-host

(02:23):
as well. And then we were like, man, like, you know,
like our agents and everybody was talking. It was like
we grew up in L.A. at the same time, Entourage
and USC. We were literally, I mean, he's a year
older than me. We were literally at the same time
in kind of prime Hollywood sports L.A. I was actually
closer with Connelly and some of the other guys. I
never really ran into Jerry in L.A., But we have

(02:46):
kids the same age. Like, our life's just, like, there's
so many parallels that led us to, like.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
This time in our life.

Speaker 5 (02:53):
And so we always joke, we, like, speed dated on
the phone and we talked for.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Like, two hours. Like, we were high school buddies, like,
just getting to know each other.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Did you fall asleep together on the phone, like your
high school sweetheart?

Speaker 3 (03:05):
We did, we did, we did.

Speaker 5 (03:06):
That's so funny. The first time we met, but no. Um,
but it just, it was natural. And I'm like, we're like,
oh shit, this is.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Going to work, you know? And the throwbacks theme kind
of thing.

Speaker 5 (03:15):
Is just like nostalgia and telling stories and telling stories. And, um,
it's just been a lot of fun. We're launching season three, uh,
coming up here in a couple of weeks. So fired
up about.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
That as well.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Well, congrats.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
And it is working because I just saw a viral
clip recently this week about your love of Saved by
the Bell. You guys were talking about that and Kelly
Kapowski and how your mission is to get Tiffany Amber
Thiessen on your show. Well, first off, consider us your
team moves, Zach and Slater here on the show.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Hope you enjoy that.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Tell us about that. Saved by the Bell was your
favorite show. Is there any update on getting Kelly Kapowski on?

Speaker 5 (03:50):
I don't know how, I don't know if I'm older
than you guys or we're the same age, but I mean,
to me, it's the greatest television show of all time.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
Kelly Kapowski was number one in my heart.

Speaker 5 (04:02):
So, it's so funny. I'll tell a quick story. I literally,
I even told my wife this. Like, you know, we
want to get her on the pod. I don't think
it's going to happen, unfortunately. But, like, I just messaged her.
I was like, she had no idea who I was.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (04:15):
She never responded. We actually have an agent in common.
So I was like, oh, maybe we can go, but.

Speaker 4 (04:20):
Use your baseball connection. She's a baseball mom in Encino
Little League.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Yeah, I've seen her at the games. And by the way,
we've had her on our show. So you got to
just try a little harder.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
Yeah, you got to get her on. Listen, I am
trying and I am striking out.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
I mean, I.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
We posted those clips. I was like, I'm all in.
My wife was like, you are desperate. Stop doing this.
That looks terrible. She doesn't want to talk to you guys.

Speaker 5 (04:45):
And then I was thinking like maybe Jerry knows her
in the acting world.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Jerry does. I don't know. We'll see. Hopefully one day
she'll just pop.

Speaker 5 (04:52):
In and you know, I don't even know what I
would say to be honest with you, but it's okay.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
That's funny.

Speaker 4 (04:56):
You know, Matt liner with Kavina and rich speaking of
the nostalgia throwbacks, we had Daniel official on the other day.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
I coach her kid, her little son Adler, another heart. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (05:06):
I saw that she was a little butthurt with you
for not putting her on the list of like, you know,
teen crushes.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
You know, she was on the list, right? And I
told her that.

Speaker 5 (05:16):
I said, hey, listen, Topanga is like top, you know, whatever.
She's topping a lot of guys' lists. It just, you know,
and I told her that. I said, listen, we've talked
about you quite a bit on our podcast, which we
need to get her on the podcast.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
But no, Danielle's killing it, man.

Speaker 5 (05:31):
She's got all, I don't even, she's got a hundred
things going on with all the pods and dancing with
the stars and all the stuff she's doing.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
And, and yeah, it was cool to do the show.

Speaker 5 (05:38):
Cause we did, we talk you sports, we talk being
parents and stuff too.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
So, but yeah, she's, she's a legend as well.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
It was sort of an evolution depending on where you were.
For me, it was Alyssa Milano, right? So then Kelly Kapowski,
then Winnie.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
Cooper, maybe Cooper, OG Winnie Cooper for sure. Right? Topanga.
Jennifer Love Hewitt was brought up on your podcast, right?

Speaker 1 (06:00):
That was one of Jerry's. So it just depends. But
I wish you luck there. You got to get her on, dude.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
Got to get her on.

Speaker 4 (06:05):
Now, Matt, I find you and your wife on social
media super endearing. Is she the one that gets you
to do all the fun trends or are you the one? Like,
how does that work?

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Do you come home and she's like, babe, we got
something we got to do? Like, how does that go down?

Speaker 3 (06:18):
I mean, kind of.

Speaker 5 (06:18):
We're just, you know, like we love... We love doing it.
You know, it's been fun for us to do together, separate.
You know, we play into the whole marriage. And I
think it's really just trying to be relatable and having
fun and being authentic.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
She's real.

Speaker 5 (06:33):
I mean, she's she's an actress, you know, by nature.
She was an actress forever. She was in arts, music, dance,
like theater, all that stuff. So she's really she's really creative.
She's really funny. She's really witty. She is all the
things that I am not.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
I feel like.

Speaker 5 (06:47):
I have self-deprecation. I have some of this stuff, so
I think it plays well together. But it's just a
combination of kind of seeing what's out there, what's fun
and relatable and And then just the engagement. Like I just,
I love the engagement and.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
I love doing the dad stuff. I think that's always
fun too.

Speaker 5 (07:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
But Matt, you know what you are? You're vulnerable, man.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
Guys like me, I'm not good at it. I'm so
reluctant to put myself out there like they're like that,
but you're inspiring in that way. So, you know, props
to you, man. Is there something you won't do though?
Or was there one thing you're like, nah, you know what?

Speaker 2 (07:20):
I can't do that.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
I won't dance. I refuse to dance.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Say I'm with you.

Speaker 5 (07:25):
I will not.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
I will not do.

Speaker 5 (07:27):
A dance trend. I'm sure I have, but I will not.
I refuse to do a dance trend. And I refuse
to put.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
The phone down like a selfie and do all the dance.

Speaker 5 (07:36):
I just won't do it. We both really don't do that.
But she's tried to make me do a couple of
these dance things over the years. I'm like, dude, I'm
like six five with no rhythm. And it's like, I
do draw the line at some point on social media.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
And that's one of them.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
The kids might make them or might get them to
do it too, though. Who knows?

Speaker 4 (07:55):
Matt, we want to run a theory by you. It's
our football dating theory for all the single guys out there.
And single women, I think you have to date someone
one full calendar year before you know how they are.
Because with football season like a week away, don't you
feel like so many people's habits change drastically? Like what
they're involved in Saturday, Sunday.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
Like you could really not get a glimpse of someone
until football season.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
Well, you could tell a lot about a girl or
a guy.

Speaker 5 (08:22):
On Saturdays of how they, how they root for their
team or where they go to watch TV, to watch games.
You can tell a lot by them on Sunday. Like
if you're, if you're at the house chilling at Sunday
and you want to be on the couch all day
and you got a girl who's like, what the hell
is going on?

Speaker 2 (08:37):
We're not going to home.

Speaker 5 (08:39):
We're not, we're not going to best buy and home
goods at home Depot, dude. You know, we, we are
going to watch the game. We're going to eat, have
some drinks and relax. Yeah, I think that I think
that's a good theory. You know, false and also like
who gets married in the fall? Like, you know, like
there's just a lot of things that happen in the
fall that should strictly just be like, hey, this is
our time. This is our this is fantasy football time.

(09:01):
This is college football. This is NFL football. The NBA
starts in a couple months like it's the greatest time
of the year. we don't need to be doing all
these other events, you know?

Speaker 4 (09:10):
And by the way, speaking of fall, I saw you
talking to Greg Olson and I'm so on board being
a coach myself, having kids play different sports. I feel
like the whole like specialization, like your kids and my
kids around the same age, like you can't be doing
one sport, right?

Speaker 5 (09:25):
I mean, yeah, I mean, it's, it's a different, it's
a different era for sure. I, I always, uh, I mean,
I encourage my boys, but I always, parents ask me,
I'm just like, play as many as you can, as
much as possible. I do think it starts earlier, the specialization,
the competitiveness does.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
Start at an earlier age than at least when I
was growing up.

Speaker 5 (09:43):
I also just didn't have access to all the stuff
that these kids do.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
But if.

Speaker 5 (09:48):
You run into a coach who tells you you can't
do this or that, get the hell away from them, man.
Go play as many. It makes you a better athlete
at the end of the day. And I, and just
a true believer in like the cream always rises to
the top. At some point, if you got enough talent
and work ethic, like you're gonna, you're, you're gonna be fine.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Right.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
No matter what sport that is. Um, that being said,
there is a balance of like, you do have to compete.
You do have to do all the other little things too,
because you don't want to get left behind, but Um, anyway, yeah.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
Uh, boys, I gotta go.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
Uh, I'm getting pulled in a different direction, but, um,
appreciate you guys having me on.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
Dude. Thank you. Absolutely. Uh, with draft Kings game day fuel.
Thank you, Matt liner. Good to see you, man. Matt liner.
Good dude.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Catch him on a big noon kickoff with our boy,
Brady Quinn, who works here at Fox sports radio, two
pros and a cup of Joe and Dave Portnoy.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
Um, now is anyone on that list of teenage crushes?

Speaker 4 (10:42):
We forgot like your childhood crushes.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
I mean, there was an evolution, right? But we all
had our personal ones, too. I mentioned Alyssa Milano was
one of my personal ones. But, yeah, I mean, at first.
Alyssa Milano, who we've had on the show a bunch
of times, still beautiful. You know, they modeled Ariel after her,
the little mermaid. But, yeah, shout out to Mona, too,
while we're at it.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Hey, yo, Angela, Mona. Look at it now. Mona wasn't
that old.

Speaker 5 (11:08):
Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
Dude, it was about the sexy redheads back in the day.
All those sexy horned up redheads on 80s TV. Peg Bundy, Mrs.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
Roper.

Speaker 5 (11:15):
Yeah, Mona.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
Oh, but yeah, Alyssa Milano.

Speaker 1 (11:19):
Even earlier than that, one of my first ebony crushes,
childhood crushes, Tootie, Kim Fields, Facts of Life, bro.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
You take the good, you take the bad.

Speaker 4 (11:27):
And she still looks good. So, yeah, it was like
Kim Fields. That show debuted this week back in 1979,
Facts of Life.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
Really?

Speaker 1 (11:34):
You were more of a Natalie kind of guy, right?

Speaker 2 (11:36):
No, you were more of a Joe kind of guy.
Stop it. Richard's more of a Joe.

Speaker 5 (11:39):
Stop it.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
And then, like I said, the evolution goes on.

Speaker 1 (11:42):
Personally, I remember having like fifth and sixth grade slow
roasters looking at posters at the Jersey Shore of Samantha
Fox wanting to do something.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
I wasn't sure what.

Speaker 1 (11:51):
I wanted to do, but she was always like pictured–
With wet t-shirts and tank tops. Samantha Fox. So, yeah,
she was a fox. And she had that song, Touch Me.
It used to make my imagination run wild. And then
my first nudie magazine I hold near and dear to
my heart, Sally Scuds.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
You've always brought her up. This is absurd. Circus boobs. Yeah,
bought that when I was 15 and 92, I believe.
You didn't buy it.

Speaker 4 (12:20):
You gave some hobo money to go buy it. Oh,
we took a trip into the city. Yeah, I blame
it on my friend Tom. My friend Tom bought it.

Speaker 2 (12:26):
Yeah, it was Tom.

Speaker 1 (12:26):
But, you know, I ended up with it. But no,
for real, my number one no was Alyssa Milano.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
Do you like Sally Scud's film?

Speaker 1 (12:32):
I mean, it's near and dear. But as I got
older and developed a taste, by far, Carmen Electra. If
I was at Spencer Gifts and I was looking through
the posters, Barbie Twins, Jenny McCarthy, Pam Anderson, Kathy Island,
Carmen Electra.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
Was oof. When I first met, when I first met Camino,
I had that picture on my desk. He had that
picture on his desk as if they were dating. Yeah.
We were in my mind. How about you?

Speaker 1 (13:02):
Again, those are personal favorites. I'd say as far as
like teenage crushes, Alyssa Milano, and then Carmen Electra as I.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Got older, I'm going to go in reverse. I was
a big wrestling fan. So, Oh, Hulk Hogan. Oh, I
love his long blonde hair. You love this 24-inch python. No.
Miss Elizabeth. Oh, yeah. Miss Elizabeth was hot.

Speaker 3 (13:26):
She was 80s hot. She was hot.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
I remember being like, man, macho man, huh? Rest in peace,
Miss Elizabeth.

Speaker 4 (13:32):
I watched Adventures in Babysitting, and I remember thinking, I
want Elizabeth Shue to babysit me. And between that and
Back to the Future, she was like attainable.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
Girl next door hot. Karate kid. Karate kid.

Speaker 3 (13:45):
You're an exo.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
I very much liked Elizabeth Shue and my number one
answer on the board. And it developed by type. This
is clearly my type. Nicole Eggert on Charles in Charge
to me was like. That was like dream girl to me.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
Hey, Charles!

Speaker 4 (14:03):
Charles! They can go back to Sid's Pizza. I'm hanging
out at the Powell's house with Nicole Eggert. She was,
to me, by far, like the hottest teen actress when
I was a little kid.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
I had a crush big time.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
And props again to Jennifer Love Hewitt. All those girls
that have come up. Don't forget her Baywatch days, too.

Speaker 5 (14:23):
Oh, I don't.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
I do not. Oh, my.

Speaker 4 (14:27):
Well, hey, if you want to add to the list,
at Covino and Rich.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
Like teenage crushes.

Speaker 5 (14:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
Weren't you a big Kirk Cameron guy? I will always
remember the episode of him trying to seal up the
waterbed on Grown Pigs. Yeah, but you know what?

Speaker 1 (14:40):
I say that jokingly. He was on every cover of
Tiger Beat and Teen Beat. That dude really was slaying
it back then. You know who my wife always talks about? Yeah,
that's why I love tigers. My wife always talks about
some dude that was in Casper the Friendly Ghost.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
Oh, Devin Sawa. Yeah, I was a little too old.
I'm like, who?

Speaker 4 (15:00):
She's like, every girl loved him. So, hey, again, add
to the list. Now, we are less than a week
from kickoff. NFL season. I thought you would find this interesting.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
14 years now.

Speaker 4 (15:11):
14 years, Carrie Underwood has been doing the Sunday night
football theme, the number one watch show in America.

Speaker 2 (15:20):
She's been oiling up those legs for 14 years. She's
been putting some armor on.

Speaker 1 (15:24):
What is it, like a million dollars a week or something?

Speaker 2 (15:26):
She gets a million per game.

Speaker 4 (15:29):
And Carrie Underwood, this is the 14th season she's partnered
up with NBC. If you remember before that, it was
Faith Hill, and there was one year where it was pink.
But 14 years now, and get this, to celebrate 14 years...
You know the song, waiting all day for Sunday night,
sort of a revamp of Joan.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
Jett's, what is it?

Speaker 4 (15:48):
I hate myself for loving you. They are altering it
for the first time in a while, apparently because of
Carrie Underwood's love of rock music.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
They're making it a more... Rock inversion. I know you're
such a rock guy.

Speaker 4 (16:04):
Remember, she performed with Papa Roach this year. She did
that duet. And she did some appearances with Guns N' Roses.

Speaker 2 (16:09):
Yeah, she rocks.

Speaker 4 (16:10):
Carrie Underwood taking a more rock approach. And you will
see that. Now, it's on Thursday. But since it's NBC,
they call the Thursday night game Sunday Night Football. So
you'll see Carrie Underwood next week. Actually, on Wednesday for
that game. So it's all confusing. It's still NBC Sunday
Night Football on Wednesday. And, of course, you got a

(16:31):
Super Bowl rematch next week. And I want to give
you my first pick of the year.

Speaker 3 (16:34):
Go ahead.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
I want to start out strong.

Speaker 3 (16:36):
1-0.

Speaker 2 (16:36):
You ready for this? Yeah.

Speaker 4 (16:39):
You know that I don't give a shit about your
love of Hard Knocks and Sam Darnold and.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
Jackson Smith and Jigma.

Speaker 3 (16:48):
I don't care.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
Episode 5 this week of Hard Knocks was great. I
heard it's heartfelt. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (16:52):
And I told you, I don't want to watch. As
a Niners fan, I don't want to watch a show
that's going to make me like them. They're really likable. Yeah,
just a solid team. So you can see where I'm
as a nine-inch train skipping.

Speaker 3 (17:02):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
I don't want to see it.

Speaker 4 (17:04):
So here's my first bet of the 2026 NFL season
on Overpromise.

Speaker 2 (17:08):
Spot thrown up there. It's the spin rate my ass.
You're downplaying Darnold's spin rate, bro.

Speaker 4 (17:17):
Well, I love the Patriots plus three and a half.
So even if it's a close game and the Seahawks
win by a field goal, hey, half a point, I'll
take it.

Speaker 3 (17:26):
Let's go.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
All right. Less than a week away. Thank you.

Speaker 1 (17:30):
And if you like our show, remember, Monday through Friday
on Fox Sports Radio, 2 to 4 out here on
the west side, 5 to 7 on the east. Everything
at Covino and Rich. Thanks again to Matt Leinert. Hit
him up. And thank you. Hey, enjoy week one of
the NFL before we see you.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
Until next time. Arrivederci, baby. See you in the over-promised land. Sorry,
I'm throwing off Tootie, huh? Tootie, yeah. On the roller skates.

Speaker 4 (17:54):
Yeah.
