What is your survivor level of involvement?

I would say more than both of you.

Yes, because you've listened to us and we don't know shit,

I have no memory either. I mean I have a
bad memory. But I have watched every season for sure.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Oh you have? Okay, Yes, I stopped.

For a little bit, like when I went away to college,
but I grew up watching, and then once I once
I caught up, I ended up going back watching all
the old ones, and then for the last at least
ten I've watched live.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
Okay, Okay, this is a question I've had for you
in various forms.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Like how do you watch so much television, like, are
you waking up? He doesn't get it. Are you waking
up in the.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Middle Are you like an actor who has to put
on weight for a movie and they're like waking up
in the middle of the night and forcing themselves to
eat ice cream?
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Are you like waking up to watch things in the
middle of the night? What do you do?
Speaker 3 (03:40):
I mean, it's literally like when I'm getting ready in
the morning, I have I don't want to say anyway names.
I have a friend who works in my business who
literally puts on a show on her phone while she's
driving home at night in LA. That is terrifying. I
was like, I can't do that.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
That's how you're supposed to do it. How are you
supposed to catch up all your shows? My god? If
I'm not on the four or five watching mash what's
the point?
Speaker 3 (04:00):
No matter what I'm doing, I have a TV show
on at all? Wow? Okay, too much?
Speaker 4 (04:04):
Okay, I have to ask before we even get into Survivor,
I'm sorry you watch so much TV, possibly more than me,
which is saying something favorite show of all time and.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Why Friends one hundred percent? Because I could turn it
on at any moment and no it would make me laugh.
Even my least favorite episodes will make me laugh.
Speaker 5 (04:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
So the Joey heavy episodes.

I love a Joey episode.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
That's not your favorite.

No, Chandler's my all time favorite character. I could watch
anything he does. I mean the man could act and
literally acted inside a box with his fingers sticking out.

Better than well he did in the Vestibule episode. He
was in the vestibule the whole time. It is hysterical,
so amazing.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Yeah.

I miss Friends when mostly when it was on. And
then I remember going to my brother was filming a
show in Budapest, and like I went to visit him,
and all we could get for whatever reason, was Friends
on DVD and I watched it for the first time.
So this is like in two thousand and three or whatever,
so it's late and I was like, oh my god,
this is this show is perfect amazing. Yeah, and it's
(04:57):
it's so funny because I feel like, you know that
people talk about the sign Feld versus Friends divide, right Like,
it's kind of like and I.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Think I'm ultimately a Friends person.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
I think I'm ultimately like not cynical enough for Seinfeld,
you know, like Seinfeld mean like people are a little
meaning anxious, yes, a little stress.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
I love them both too, but give them the choice.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
But I think also what elevates Friends is the performances.
It's like, you could talk about the writing, and the
writing is great in both shows, but I will say
the actors, like because Jerry himself is not amazing, and
Seinfeld he's kind of there and he knows it, and
even some of the guest stars are I'm like eh,
But the acting in Friends, it's like the writing is
(05:37):
already a ten and then the actors just make it
a fifteen every time. Perfect really is okay? So you
had this opportunity to go to Fiji and cover a survivor.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Is this was this something that you initiated or is
this just yeah?
Speaker 3 (05:53):
So every season they bring out a group of press
at the beginning of the season before the premiere so
that they can, like press will run through the first
challenge to like try it out, which I was like, no,
I'll get hurt. I know myself.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
You didn't do the challenge. You didn't you had a chance.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
We'll challenge well because I didn't go until later. So
at Variety we don't do group set visits. So we
don't go out with other press because we needed to,
you know, to be exclusive.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Excluse too cool, We're too cool.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
No, I think that's so cool. And it's cool because
all of them are now friends. So shout out to
that group of press who's been going for now ten
twenty years. Wow, that's so cool. So I went. So
they'd never had anyone go out post merge, so this
was the first time that that happened. So I got
to go out for five days, and it was something
I pushed for for a long time. Here, since they.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Say you went by yourself or you went with the group,
I went by myself.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
So your variety.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Are ironically, there's very little variety of right, you got
to feel by yourself, Okay, gotcha Fiji.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Wow Wow, So did they assign you like a was
there a Survivor liaison?
Speaker 2 (06:58):
No, they just kind of three months.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
And so the head of pr for CBS, like for
the Survivor team at CBS, who is basically like Jeff's
number two at this point. Her name's Laurie. She's incredible.
She has been on the show forever. She and I've
been friends for a long time, and she was like
I'll be out there. We'll you know, we'll coordinate everything.
But she wasn't even staying on the same island that
I was staying on, so I literally had to take
(07:20):
a boat every morning to everywhere I went.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Okay, so yeah, so can you describe the island layout? Actually,
since you brought it up, are you in an awesome
hotel on one island and they're starving?
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Like right next? Really?
Speaker 4 (07:33):
Like how far away is they are sucking on a
lobster show as you're watching, like you guys starving. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
When I got there, I like laid at the pool
for a day, Like I took the first day as
a day to myself because I was like, I was also.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Long as you're roughing it. As long as you're roughing it.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
So on the beach, this gorgeous hotel. There's like three
hotels on this island and that's it. None of the
islands have cars, so everyone everything is by a golf cart.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Wow, so so cool.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Anywhere we go, it's you have to go down and
get on a boat. So that morning she texted me
the next morning like we're going to the boat, will
be ready to pick you up, And I was like,
how will I know what boat to get on, and
she was like, actually, just read the side of the
boats because none of the people driving the boats can
speak English.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
So I also like, I could be getting kidnapped and
I don't I won't know, so but I just read
the name of the boat. And then it's about fifteen
to twenty minute ride to the main island where Survivor is,
like like the Survivor Hub where all the crew stays,
and so they all have like some have.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Houses, Okay, they're in huts.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Really most of them are like huts. It's like two rooms,
most of them outdoor showers.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
But that's the Survivor Island. That's that's where the show
takes place.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
Is Well, there's multiple islands, so the one island is
where all the crew is and that's the same island
where Tribal Council is where a lot of the challenges are.
But it's very spread out, so sometimes it's a twenty
five minute ride in the golf cart to like in
the middle of the forest where.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Gotcha, gotcha, and then the islands that the contestants are on.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Another like fifteen to twenty minutes out on an island.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
So on a boat, So that's that's not cart. You
got to take a boat.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
So they have to take a boat. So they have
to take a boat to they get to the island,
and then like no one sees them, like when you
see Jeff say like come on in. They've all already
been on the island for a little bit because they're
all getting miked up as they get off the boat, right,
so they'll have to you know, So all of that
is happening.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
And then is there anything else on the island that
they're surviving on? Like is there any is there a
town like fifteen minute walk away? No, no, nothing, No,
they're literally on deserted islands. They make sure that they're
the crew in that.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Yeah, that's it. I mean, it's just the cameraman. There's
nothing else there.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
Do they limit like the range for them to walk,
Like could they just pick a direction and decide to
walk one night?
Speaker 3 (09:50):
They can walk anywhere on the way, I guess if
there's nothing there, there's nothing there. So obviously they don't
go anywhere without a camera though, so even unless you're
going to the bathroom, but like even then a cameraman
will won't be close by because you just don't just
for danger, like for safety.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
Right right is the k are the the camera people
on the island? Do are they roughing it as much?
Or do they have like little huts or someplace where
they get to stay.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
They have huts for sure, They definitely have places to stay.
I will say there is a lack of bathrooms for everyone.
Speaker 6 (10:18):
Involved really, So for example, like going out to tribal
council or after before tribal council, going out to the challenge,
if you're in the middle of the forest, they there's
no bathroom nearby.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
So even for Jeff, like there is zero bathroom. So
like during while a lot of people, you know, there's
like a crafty area ish, but it's like just jugs
of water and coffee, but no one really wants to
drink any coffee because there's no bathrooms. So even for
the crew members. But we're sitting out there, like the
one day I was there, I mean we were sitting
out there for four hours in the sun.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Oh, so it's like, Wow.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
You're scorching hot, and you don't want to drink any
water because it's like then I have to go in
the woods.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
Are the contestants allowed to have any of the coffee.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
No, no, no, no, only water.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
That's what I figured. So they can't be like, hey,
there's twizzlers, like.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
Right, okay, hit the red vines from crafting.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
They would totally do that if they could. Of course,
of course you wouldn't.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
But I also have to imagine, I'm sorry, I gotta
get We can't just go that fast past the whole
bathroom situation.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
I gotta we gotta have a little potty talk.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
That was my biggest thing. I was asking everyone where
the bathrooms were.
Speaker 4 (11:23):
Well, yeah, I mean so, but I have to imagine
when you're on the deserted island at some point, because
you're not really eating, a lot of your gi functions
just shut down anyway. So there's probably you're probably going three,
four or five days sometimes without going to the bat
I mean you have to pee, obviously, but that would
be it.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
But even that, I mean, you're not drinking much. You're
the water from the you know, from the well that
you're going to get. But I will say during the challenges,
when they come in and drop their bags, when they
go over to start competing, they immediately also drop their
water bottles, and a crew member comes over and gathers
all the water and fill up their water bottle.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
Okay, that makes sense.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
Which I think they have to because you just can't
live without that.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Right, Okay, right, Okay? So are they all on different
islands each tribe?
Speaker 5 (12:06):
You know?
Speaker 3 (12:06):
I don't think so. I wasn't there Poete pre merge,
so I could say. Now they're saying that maybe they are,
because they can't They definitely can't get to each other,
so that I'm not sure of. Okay.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Wow, oh my god.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
Just the logistics of all this, because we were reading
about the sheer number of people it takes to make
the show and how there's something like five hundred locals.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
Oh, it's crazy. The amount of people like it is
really really wild. How many? I mean it used when
it started it was like sixty crew members. By season
two it doubled, obviously because it had to. I feel
like I actually had this stat somewhere that how many
crew members now, because I think it's right now, I
think there are eight hundred and seventy five crew members.
(12:46):
WHOA So that's a mix of LA people and then locals.
Speaker 4 (12:50):
Wow, this would be horrible for the local economy if
the show decided to leave.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Yeah. Well, I will say though that the island, the
main island that like all of the crew lives on,
there's a hotel there that gets completely closed down and
it is just open to the crew so that when
people have days off, they can just hang out at
the hotel, which is actually really cool. Like one of
the days, I had a couple hours in between and
I went and laid at the pool, and like some
of the crew people had the day off, so they
(13:15):
were there like hanging out, and a lot of their
kids are there. And I mean there's like sixty five
kids now that are from people who had met on
Survivor filming. Oh, like there's a door opening couples and
families that are on set.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
Oh my god, that's incredible. And then when contestants are
voted off, do they stay at that same hotel?
Speaker 3 (13:36):
No? No, no, they are completely separate. And then they
have to but they have to stay the whole time
until the season end it finishes filming.
Speaker 6 (13:43):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
Like Mike White, for example, didn't he didn't want to
stay because he was like, I can't eat any of
this food and wanted to go somewhere else. So he
went somewhere else. But still like state secluded, Like he
couldn't go film White Lotus. He was like, he stayed
somewhere and he.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
Went to the White Lotus resort. Yeah, wait, why couldn't
eat the food?
Speaker 3 (14:02):
I think he's vegan or something and he just couldn't
eat any of the food they provided. So he was like,
I'll go somewhere else and stay quiet, but like stay quiet,
and you know, I don't eat my phone or anything.
I just need to be somewhere else where I can
the actual food. And so he went somewhere else, and
I think he rote all of the White Lotus season.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
I was going to say, it's actually a great rated retreat.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
Ye, so you're you're if you're a survivor contestant, whether
you win or you're the first one kicked off, it's
at least a month correct, Okay, gotcha.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
Ye, because you're there early too. I'm at like Ponderosa beforehand.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
Man. Okay, let's get into the details of the episode
you were actually there for. So this episode was picked
I'm assuming because of the mister Beasts.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Yes, but when we were when.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
I was talking to CBS about what to go out for,
they had told me about this crossover, and this was
the first time they had obviously done a big collaboration
like this because they are also filmed an episode of
Beast Games which aired earlier on Amazon that Jeff was on.
So I was there for that episode first because they
built a whole challenge and Jeff and Jimmy co hosted it.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
That's not in Fiji Beast Challenge, it's not.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
But they brought that cast out to Fiji to film
one episode. Damn it was insane. I've never seen anything
like it, and talk about two different hosting styles because
Jimmy wears an ear piece and he has his producer's
talking to him, where Jeff is never once wore an
earpiece and no one is talking if Jeff's talking, and
it's just such a different, a different world.
Speaker 1 (15:21):
Yeah, Will and I were talking about that when we
were recapping the episode.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
It's just like their vibes are so opposite.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
And you know, it's a generational divide, is what I
was saying, because it's like the influencer versus what you know.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
Will pointed out as.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
Like a host, you know, and it's like, right, it's
so it's so different skill.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
Well, and a showrunner like Jeff is such a different
kind of host because he's both host and showrunner. So
it's so different that they would have, yeah, Jimmy come
out and not be and Jimmy just isn't that guy.
And at one point I think it made it in
the Beast Games episode, at one point, Jimmy's like yelling
at his contest, not yelling in a mean way, but
just like raising his voice. And he was like, you

don't raise your voice. And Jeff's like, if they respect you,
they either way.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
And I was like, oh, but he used to raise
his voice, didnety. That's one of the things I'm learning
about is that in the past he was not Uncle Jeff.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
He was a different kind of host.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
Uncle Jeff is a little different than than the back
in the day Jeff. It's like everything, I mean, it evolves.
I sure you know, all right?
Speaker 2 (16:18):
So you're there for the auction, which is my favorite.
Speaker 3 (16:21):
I was so excited.
Speaker 2 (16:22):

This was cool.

Now wait, I'm sorry, are you are you physically on
the set right there as they're filming all the stuff
that's happening.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
I should send you the photos after this that I
took there. It's so crazy because you're like inches from them.
The crew is right on top of them. It is
wild wow.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
And how many people are there?
Speaker 4 (16:41):
So there's the contestants are sitting there and you've got
Jeff there, they're doing the auction. We pull back fifty feet.
Are there one hundred people sitting there? Or is it
twenty times?
Speaker 3 (16:50):
That was the auction was a tight spot because it
was like up against the beach, So then it's like
all trees. So in that group there was probably thirty
people and were shoulder to shoulder like it's right on
top of each other.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
Wow. How many cameras do you think?
Speaker 6 (17:01):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (17:01):
I would say probably like eight or nine. There was
actually again I'll send you guys a video. There's a
giant ladder and a guy's like holding onto a tree
and holding a camera on the tip.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
I was like, this is insane.
Speaker 4 (17:13):
And is it one of those things where are are
the contestants encouraged not to communicate with crew in the
audience there or it's like you're not.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
Sitting there like hey, Emily, how's everybody doing? It's not
Oh my.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
Gosh, No, they don't communicate at all with the crew,
and this cast knows that by now, but in the
beginning every cast is told. I think in the past
years they have had people who have like talked to
the cameraman and talked to and like the cameraman just
can't respond, which is the case in all reality TV
for the.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
Most part, flirting with someone behind the camera to get
some food. Exactly, you got snickers in your pocket, I'll
make it worth.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
Exactly. Wow.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
But there is there is some like chat with Jeff,
Like they definitely talked to Jeff a goot amount while
when they're walking up, and but I will say, they
never film anything twice, so it's never their lug. We
need to get that again, like if you were walking up,
that is the time they're walking up. Where that was
the biggest difference. I feel like with these games, it
was like if something doesn't happen, they'll go back and
run it through again and just that's not happening.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
Interesting.
Speaker 5 (18:16):
Yeah, all right, So how was the auction?
Speaker 2 (18:32):
Tell us tell us? Like, could you could you smell
the sea slug?
Speaker 3 (18:36):
I had to turn away, I will say for that,
oh you're a rider. It was discussed. I mean I
was gagging again watching it, Like I had a hard
time watching it.
Speaker 4 (18:47):
I was just talking about the proper way to eat
a Grubb headphones off.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
That's disgusting. I will say, like I actually plugged my
ears when Seria was throwing up because she up three times.
So it wasn't just that one time there was this.
There was another time where she went away and Jeff
went off to go grab the next dish because they're like,
it's like off to the side somewhere so they can't
see what else is coming. And he came back out
and then he like went to start talking and looked
(19:14):
and he was like, where did Surigo?
Speaker 2 (19:15):
And they were like youd.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
Wow, don't want that. So that was just there was
one thing also they didn't show was that they there
was a plate of cupcakes at one point that they
did all get to eat, so at least Jonathan got
that after that girl.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
That was one of my points. I was like, I
wondered because like Joe didn't. We didn't see Joe get
anything and a couple of life and I was like,
do they do they edit out some of the.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
Store because it lasted a while, so I think like
they couldn't. They couldn't show everything, But I was surprised
they didn't show like I think it was Ozzy who
got cupcakes, and they were like, you can give it
to any everyone, or you can eat it all yourself.
And he was like, of course, I'm going to give
it to everyone. I mean at one point you wo.

Yeah, and they just they just buzzed by that very quickly.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
He had it all over his face. Gross.

How do you not How did not again your your
nineteen days with very minimal calories, How did they not
all get sick?

I don't understand how anybody kept that food down.

So I was very surprised that people weren't like more
excited about like the fruits and veggies like the like carrots,
and I was like, wouldn't that be good for you?

Like don't you want some that? We were just talking
about which one we wanted.
Speaker 4 (20:26):
At the end of the day, I think we both
agreed that the two chicken breasts in the broccoli.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
The place, or like the chips and crackers.

Exactly something milkshake is and't do you don't want dairy
in the middle.

I do not believe she picked a milkshake like it
was so hot out. I was like, why in the
world would you and.

possible thing they could need, right, so they all are
pulling out umbrellas to you know, block things. And then

little did they know, we're we're gonna end up needing
those umbrellas for the sun because we are out in
the middle of the beach for the next part and
it is a million degrees Like no joke, swept through
my entire shirt I was wearing, Oh my god, because
it was just direct son and there's no shade at all,
So like Jeff was drenched. I was like, how and
they I will say that the crew also like comes

out and reapplies sunscreen to all the cast, which is
very good to see.

Interesting, Yes, okay, how are there not people just passing

That's what I kept wondering, honestly, especially after eating all
that food. Think about after that milkshake.

It took a long time to get back up on

how long did that challenge last? Was it like a

Yeah, sold at least thirty we were it was at
least thirty minutes, okay, Yeah, And I was very surprised
that Ozzie didn't didn't win that one because he did
not move the entire time.

Well, one of the things Ryder pointed out, which was
really really interesting was that Tiff was the only one
who had her hands down yeah, and everyone else had.

I think it ended up being a big move. I
think that was actually helpful.

when mister Bee's came out and I was like, is
this going to work? I was kind of like, I

but I was like, are people going to care? Are
these people going to know who this guy is?

Like I said, that would have said that, yeah, he's

I was, but I mean they clearly did. And then
going into Tribal, it was like the energy was just insane.
I mean, we sit in the control room. Tribal is
a pretty small area, a huge like set piece, but
the actual area itself is pretty small.

Drummers just a drumming circle. It's a sixty sixty person chorus.

and old media, Like the fact that he as an

I really don't understand how it's possible. But then I

I don't really know, but yes, it is a very
interesting dynamic because CBS and Survivor, I mean Survivors of

it's one time they have for the Winners of War season,
but they've never, like a lot of other shows, increase
each year. They've just always been a million dollars and
they've never changed that.

oh my god, the prize is a million dollars.

I think they showed a good amount. I think it
was like the perfect amount because it showed like for

showed maybe I'm curious. I'd call my parents and asked
if they knew who it was. I don't think they would.

I think for his YouTube channel because they filmed his
episode the day before. They're all like die hard Survivor fans.

out to me when I was there.

For a little bit, like when I went away to college,
but I grew up watching, and then once I once
I caught up, I ended up going back watching all
the old ones, and then for the last at least
ten I've watched live.

Okay, Okay, this is a question I've had for you
in various forms.

Like how do you watch so much television, like, are
you waking up? He doesn't get it. Are you waking
up in the.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Middle Are you like an actor who has to put
on weight for a movie and they're like waking up
in the middle of the night and forcing themselves to
eat ice cream?
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Are you like waking up to watch things in the
middle of the night? What do you do?

I mean, it's literally like when I'm getting ready in
the morning, I have I don't want to say anyway names.
I have a friend who works in my business who
literally puts on a show on her phone while she's
driving home at night in LA. That is terrifying. I
was like, I can't do that.

That's how you're supposed to do it. How are you
supposed to catch up all your shows? My god? If
I'm not on the four or five watching mash what's
the point?
Speaker 3 (04:00):
No matter what I'm doing, I have a TV show
on at all? Wow? Okay, too much?

Okay, I have to ask before we even get into Survivor,
I'm sorry you watch so much TV, possibly more than me,
which is saying something favorite show of all time and.

Why Friends one hundred percent? Because I could turn it
on at any moment and no it would make me laugh.
Even my least favorite episodes will make me laugh.

So the Joey heavy episodes.

I love a Joey episode.

No, Chandler's my all time favorite character. I could watch
anything he does. I mean the man could act and
literally acted inside a box with his fingers sticking out.

Better than well he did in the Vestibule episode. He
was in the vestibule the whole time. It is hysterical,
so amazing.

I miss Friends when mostly when it was on. And
then I remember going to my brother was filming a
show in Budapest, and like I went to visit him,
and all we could get for whatever reason, was Friends
on DVD and I watched it for the first time.
So this is like in two thousand and three or whatever,
so it's late and I was like, oh my god,
this is this show is perfect amazing. Yeah, and it's

it's so funny because I feel like, you know that
people talk about the sign Feld versus Friends divide, right Like,
it's kind of like and I.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Think I'm ultimately a Friends person.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
I think I'm ultimately like not cynical enough for Seinfeld,
you know, like Seinfeld mean like people are a little
meaning anxious, yes, a little stress.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
I love them both too, but give them the choice.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
But I think also what elevates Friends is the performances.
It's like, you could talk about the writing, and the
writing is great in both shows, but I will say
the actors, like because Jerry himself is not amazing, and
Seinfeld he's kind of there and he knows it, and
even some of the guest stars are I'm like eh,
But the acting in Friends, it's like the writing is

already a ten and then the actors just make it
a fifteen every time. Perfect really is okay? So you
had this opportunity to go to Fiji and cover a survivor.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Is this was this something that you initiated or is
this just yeah?
Speaker 3 (05:53):
So every season they bring out a group of press
at the beginning of the season before the premiere so
that they can, like press will run through the first
challenge to like try it out, which I was like, no,
I'll get hurt. I know myself.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
You didn't do the challenge. You didn't you had a chance.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
We'll challenge well because I didn't go until later. So
at Variety we don't do group set visits. So we
don't go out with other press because we needed to,
you know, to be exclusive.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Excluse too cool, We're too cool.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
No, I think that's so cool. And it's cool because
all of them are now friends. So shout out to
that group of press who's been going for now ten
twenty years. Wow, that's so cool. So I went. So
they'd never had anyone go out post merge, so this
was the first time that that happened. So I got
to go out for five days, and it was something
I pushed for for a long time. Here, since they.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
Say you went by yourself or you went with the group,
I went by myself.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
So your variety.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Are ironically, there's very little variety of right, you got
to feel by yourself, Okay, gotcha Fiji.

Wow Wow, So did they assign you like a was
there a Survivor liaison?
Speaker 2 (06:58):
No, they just kind of three months.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
And so the head of pr for CBS, like for
the Survivor team at CBS, who is basically like Jeff's
number two at this point. Her name's Laurie. She's incredible.
She has been on the show forever. She and I've
been friends for a long time, and she was like
I'll be out there. We'll you know, we'll coordinate everything.
But she wasn't even staying on the same island that
I was staying on, so I literally had to take

a boat every morning to everywhere I went.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Okay, so yeah, so can you describe the island layout? Actually,
since you brought it up, are you in an awesome
hotel on one island and they're starving?
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Like right next? Really?
Speaker 4 (07:33):
Like how far away is they are sucking on a
lobster show as you're watching, like you guys starving. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
When I got there, I like laid at the pool
for a day, Like I took the first day as
a day to myself because I was like, I was also.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Long as you're roughing it. As long as you're roughing it.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
So on the beach, this gorgeous hotel. There's like three
hotels on this island and that's it. None of the
islands have cars, so everyone everything is by a golf cart.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Wow, so so cool.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Anywhere we go, it's you have to go down and
get on a boat. So that morning she texted me
the next morning like we're going to the boat, will
be ready to pick you up, And I was like,
how will I know what boat to get on, and
she was like, actually, just read the side of the
boats because none of the people driving the boats can
speak English.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
So I also like, I could be getting kidnapped and
I don't I won't know, so but I just read
the name of the boat. And then it's about fifteen
to twenty minute ride to the main island where Survivor is,
like like the Survivor Hub where all the crew stays,
and so they all have like some have.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Houses, Okay, they're in huts.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Really most of them are like huts. It's like two rooms,
most of them outdoor showers.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
But that's the Survivor Island. That's that's where the show
takes place.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
Is Well, there's multiple islands, so the one island is
where all the crew is and that's the same island
where Tribal Council is where a lot of the challenges are.
But it's very spread out, so sometimes it's a twenty
five minute ride in the golf cart to like in
the middle of the forest where.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Gotcha, gotcha, and then the islands that the contestants are on.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Another like fifteen to twenty minutes out on an island.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
So on a boat, So that's that's not cart. You
got to take a boat.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
So they have to take a boat. So they have
to take a boat to they get to the island,
and then like no one sees them, like when you
see Jeff say like come on in. They've all already
been on the island for a little bit because they're
all getting miked up as they get off the boat, right,
so they'll have to you know, So all of that
is happening.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
And then is there anything else on the island that
they're surviving on? Like is there any is there a
town like fifteen minute walk away? No, no, nothing, No,
they're literally on deserted islands. They make sure that they're
the crew in that.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
Yeah, that's it. I mean, it's just the cameraman. There's
nothing else there.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
Do they limit like the range for them to walk,
Like could they just pick a direction and decide to
walk one night?
Speaker 3 (09:50):
They can walk anywhere on the way, I guess if
there's nothing there, there's nothing there. So obviously they don't
go anywhere without a camera though, so even unless you're
going to the bathroom, but like even then a cameraman
will won't be close by because you just don't just
for danger, like for safety.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
Right right is the k are the the camera people
on the island? Do are they roughing it as much?
Or do they have like little huts or someplace where
they get to stay.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
They have huts for sure, They definitely have places to stay.
I will say there is a lack of bathrooms for everyone.
Speaker 6 (10:18):
Involved really, So for example, like going out to tribal
council or after before tribal council, going out to the challenge,
if you're in the middle of the forest, they there's
no bathroom nearby.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
So even for Jeff, like there is zero bathroom. So
like during while a lot of people, you know, there's
like a crafty area ish, but it's like just jugs
of water and coffee, but no one really wants to
drink any coffee because there's no bathrooms. So even for
the crew members. But we're sitting out there, like the
one day I was there, I mean we were sitting
out there for four hours in the sun.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Oh, so it's like, Wow.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
You're scorching hot, and you don't want to drink any
water because it's like then I have to go in
the woods.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
Are the contestants allowed to have any of the coffee.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
No, no, no, no, only water.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
That's what I figured. So they can't be like, hey,
there's twizzlers, like.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
Right, okay, hit the red vines from crafting.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
They would totally do that if they could. Of course,
of course you wouldn't.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
But I also have to imagine, I'm sorry, I gotta
get We can't just go that fast past the whole
bathroom situation.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
I gotta we gotta have a little potty talk.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
That was my biggest thing. I was asking everyone where
the bathrooms were.
Speaker 4 (11:23):
Well, yeah, I mean so, but I have to imagine
when you're on the deserted island at some point, because
you're not really eating, a lot of your gi functions
just shut down anyway. So there's probably you're probably going three,
four or five days sometimes without going to the bat
I mean you have to pee, obviously, but that would
be it.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
But even that, I mean, you're not drinking much. You're
the water from the you know, from the well that
you're going to get. But I will say during the challenges,
when they come in and drop their bags, when they
go over to start competing, they immediately also drop their
water bottles, and a crew member comes over and gathers
all the water and fill up their water bottle.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
Okay, that makes sense.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
Which I think they have to because you just can't
live without that.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Right, Okay, right, Okay? So are they all on different
islands each tribe?
Speaker 5 (12:06):
You know?
Speaker 3 (12:06):
I don't think so. I wasn't there Poete pre merge,
so I could say. Now they're saying that maybe they are,
because they can't They definitely can't get to each other,
so that I'm not sure of. Okay.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Wow, oh my god.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
Just the logistics of all this, because we were reading
about the sheer number of people it takes to make
the show and how there's something like five hundred locals.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
Oh, it's crazy. The amount of people like it is
really really wild. How many? I mean it used when
it started it was like sixty crew members. By season
two it doubled, obviously because it had to. I feel
like I actually had this stat somewhere that how many
crew members now, because I think it's right now, I
think there are eight hundred and seventy five crew members.
(12:46):
WHOA So that's a mix of LA people and then locals.
Speaker 4 (12:50):
Wow, this would be horrible for the local economy if
the show decided to leave.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Yeah. Well, I will say though that the island, the
main island that like all of the crew lives on,
there's a hotel there that gets completely closed down and
it is just open to the crew so that when
people have days off, they can just hang out at
the hotel, which is actually really cool. Like one of
the days, I had a couple hours in between and
I went and laid at the pool, and like some
of the crew people had the day off, so they
(13:15):
were there like hanging out, and a lot of their
kids are there. And I mean there's like sixty five
kids now that are from people who had met on
Survivor filming. Oh, like there's a door opening couples and
families that are on set.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
Oh my god, that's incredible. And then when contestants are
voted off, do they stay at that same hotel?
Speaker 3 (13:36):
No? No, no, they are completely separate. And then they
have to but they have to stay the whole time
until the season end it finishes filming.
Speaker 6 (13:43):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
Like Mike White, for example, didn't he didn't want to
stay because he was like, I can't eat any of
this food and wanted to go somewhere else. So he
went somewhere else. But still like state secluded, Like he
couldn't go film White Lotus. He was like, he stayed
somewhere and he.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
Went to the White Lotus resort. Yeah, wait, why couldn't
eat the food?
Speaker 3 (14:02):
I think he's vegan or something and he just couldn't
eat any of the food they provided. So he was like,
I'll go somewhere else and stay quiet, but like stay quiet,
and you know, I don't eat my phone or anything.
I just need to be somewhere else where I can
the actual food. And so he went somewhere else, and
I think he rote all of the White Lotus season.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
I was going to say, it's actually a great rated retreat.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
Ye, so you're you're if you're a survivor contestant, whether
you win or you're the first one kicked off, it's
at least a month correct, Okay, gotcha.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
Ye, because you're there early too. I'm at like Ponderosa beforehand.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
Man. Okay, let's get into the details of the episode
you were actually there for. So this episode was picked
I'm assuming because of the mister Beasts.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
Yes, but when we were when.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
I was talking to CBS about what to go out for,
they had told me about this crossover, and this was
the first time they had obviously done a big collaboration
like this because they are also filmed an episode of
Beast Games which aired earlier on Amazon that Jeff was on.
So I was there for that episode first because they
built a whole challenge and Jeff and Jimmy co hosted it.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
That's not in Fiji Beast Challenge, it's not.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
But they brought that cast out to Fiji to film
one episode. Damn it was insane. I've never seen anything
like it, and talk about two different hosting styles because
Jimmy wears an ear piece and he has his producer's
talking to him, where Jeff is never once wore an
earpiece and no one is talking if Jeff's talking, and
it's just such a different, a different world.
Speaker 1 (15:21):
Yeah, Will and I were talking about that when we
were recapping the episode.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
It's just like their vibes are so opposite.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
And you know, it's a generational divide, is what I
was saying, because it's like the influencer versus what you know.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
Will pointed out as.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
Like a host, you know, and it's like, right, it's
so it's so different skill.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
Well, and a showrunner like Jeff is such a different
kind of host because he's both host and showrunner. So
it's so different that they would have, yeah, Jimmy come
out and not be and Jimmy just isn't that guy.
And at one point I think it made it in
the Beast Games episode, at one point, Jimmy's like yelling
at his contest, not yelling in a mean way, but
just like raising his voice. And he was like, you

don't raise your voice. And Jeff's like, if they respect you,
they either way.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
And I was like, oh, but he used to raise
his voice, didnety. That's one of the things I'm learning
about is that in the past he was not Uncle Jeff.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
He was a different kind of host.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
Uncle Jeff is a little different than than the back
in the day Jeff. It's like everything, I mean, it evolves.
I sure you know, all right?
Speaker 2 (16:18):
So you're there for the auction, which is my favorite.

I was so excited.

Now wait, I'm sorry, are you are you physically on
the set right there as they're filming all the stuff
that's happening.

I should send you the photos after this that I
took there. It's so crazy because you're like inches from them.
The crew is right on top of them. It is
wild wow.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
And how many people are there?
Speaker 4 (16:41):
So there's the contestants are sitting there and you've got
Jeff there, they're doing the auction. We pull back fifty feet.
Are there one hundred people sitting there? Or is it
twenty times?
Speaker 3 (16:50):
That was the auction was a tight spot because it
was like up against the beach, So then it's like
all trees. So in that group there was probably thirty
people and were shoulder to shoulder like it's right on
top of each other.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
Wow. How many cameras do you think?
Speaker 6 (17:01):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (17:01):
I would say probably like eight or nine. There was
actually again I'll send you guys a video. There's a
giant ladder and a guy's like holding onto a tree
and holding a camera on the tip.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
I was like, this is insane.
Speaker 4 (17:13):
And is it one of those things where are are
the contestants encouraged not to communicate with crew in the
audience there or it's like you're not.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
Sitting there like hey, Emily, how's everybody doing? It's not
Oh my.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
Gosh, No, they don't communicate at all with the crew,
and this cast knows that by now, but in the
beginning every cast is told. I think in the past
years they have had people who have like talked to
the cameraman and talked to and like the cameraman just
can't respond, which is the case in all reality TV
for the.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
Most part, flirting with someone behind the camera to get
some food. Exactly, you got snickers in your pocket, I'll
make it worth.
Speaker 2 (17:50):
Exactly. Wow.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
But there is there is some like chat with Jeff,
Like they definitely talked to Jeff a goot amount while
when they're walking up, and but I will say, they
never film anything twice, so it's never their lug. We
need to get that again, like if you were walking up,
that is the time they're walking up. Where that was
the biggest difference. I feel like with these games, it
was like if something doesn't happen, they'll go back and
run it through again and just that's not happening.
Speaker 2 (18:15):

Yeah, all right, So how was the auction?
Speaker 2 (18:32):
Tell us tell us? Like, could you could you smell
the sea slug?
Speaker 3 (18:36):
I had to turn away, I will say for that,
oh you're a rider. It was discussed. I mean I
was gagging again watching it, Like I had a hard
time watching it.
Speaker 4 (18:47):
I was just talking about the proper way to eat
a Grubb headphones off.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
That's disgusting. I will say, like I actually plugged my
ears when Seria was throwing up because she up three times.
So it wasn't just that one time there was this.
There was another time where she went away and Jeff
went off to go grab the next dish because they're like,
it's like off to the side somewhere so they can't
see what else is coming. And he came back out
and then he like went to start talking and looked
(19:14):
and he was like, where did Surigo?
Speaker 2 (19:15):
And they were like youd.
Speaker 3 (19:21):
Wow, don't want that. So that was just there was
one thing also they didn't show was that they there
was a plate of cupcakes at one point that they
did all get to eat, so at least Jonathan got
that after that girl.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
That was one of my points. I was like, I
wondered because like Joe didn't. We didn't see Joe get
anything and a couple of life and I was like,
do they do they edit out some of the.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
Store because it lasted a while, so I think like
they couldn't. They couldn't show everything, But I was surprised
they didn't show like I think it was Ozzy who
got cupcakes, and they were like, you can give it
to any everyone, or you can eat it all yourself.
And he was like, of course, I'm going to give
it to everyone. I mean at one point you wo.

Yeah, and they just they just buzzed by that very quickly.

He had it all over his face. Gross.

How do you not How did not again your your
nineteen days with very minimal calories, How did they not
all get sick?

So I was very surprised that people weren't like more
excited about like the fruits and veggies like the like carrots,
and I was like, wouldn't that be good for you?

Like don't you want some that? We were just talking
about which one we wanted.

At the end of the day, I think we both
agreed that the two chicken breasts in the broccoli.

The place, or like the chips and crackers.

so like why before they walked up on the beach,
there's like people running out to wipe down everything because

crew is just so aware of what's going to happen
that they have these backpacks that I assume have every
possible thing they could need, right, so they all are
pulling out umbrellas to you know, block things. And then

little did they know, we're we're gonna end up needing
those umbrellas for the sun because we are out in
the middle of the beach for the next part and
it is a million degrees Like no joke, swept through
my entire shirt I was wearing, Oh my god, because
it was just direct son and there's no shade at all,
So like Jeff was drenched. I was like, how and
they I will say that the crew also like comes

out and reapplies sunscreen to all the cast, which is
very good to see.

Interesting, Yes, okay, how are there not people just passing
out left and right?

That's what I kept wondering, honestly, especially after eating all
that food. Think about after that milkshake.

I felt for Devons when he kept like falling off,
and that was a lot of them by that last part.
It took a long time to get back up on

had to get up their balance, balance the ball, and

Get back up there. It was like everyone was in
like a food colma, and they couldn't they couldn't move.

So one of the things we talked about is the
lack of like a clock, like knowing how long. So like,
how long did that challenge last? Was it like a
ten minute thing or was it they said they were
five and ten minute increments in that.

Yeah, sold at least thirty we were it was at
least thirty minutes, okay, Yeah, And I was very surprised
that Ozzie didn't didn't win that one because he did
not move the entire time.

Well, one of the things Ryder pointed out, which was
really really interesting was that Tiff was the only one
who had her hands down yeah, and everyone else had.

I think it ended up being a big move. I
think that was actually helpful.

Was very surprised by that. I think I actually like
wrote down yeah. And then I was confused because afterward
when they said we're going to go, you know, we

like eight, so they had like seven hours.

But we talked about how chaotic it was, to the

I've never seen anything like that. That's just so wild.
And I, you know, didn't wasn't there for that. So

No, because they can't have anyone there, Like Jeff doesn't
even go there unless he has to, so no, they

his ear all day. So like when I was there,
I was trying to figure out when to do my

in the middle of the day because all he's doing

No, I waited till after, which I was thrilled because
I wanted to see the Beast Twist and they told
me what it was. As I was at the auction
when mister Bee's came out and I was like, is
this going to work? I was kind of like, I
don't know. I don't know anything about mister Beasts before,
so I had read a lot, I had done my research,
but I was like, are people going to care? Are
these people going to know who this guy is?

Like I said, that would have said that, yeah, he's
I didn't think anyone here was going to know who.

I was, but I mean they clearly did. And then
going into Tribal, it was like the energy was just insane.
I mean, we sit in the control room. Tribal is
a pretty small area, a huge like set piece, but
the actual area itself is pretty small.

Drummers just a drumming circle. It's a sixty sixty person chorus.

seminal moment of like media collision between like new media
and old media, Like the fact that he as an
individual is probably worth as much as all of CBS produced,

you know, like his budget, mister Beast's budget is like
he doubled the prize money for the show.

I really don't understand how it's possible. But then I
look at his videos and see that it. I mean,

people this. So I kept thinking like, oh, it must
be his production, Like all this money isn't coming from him, No,
this is just him and This was his idea to
just be like, I'll just double it, and so I am.
I don't really know, but yes, it is a very
interesting dynamic because CBS and Survivor, I mean Survivors of

the Game, that has never increased the prize. I mean,
it's one time they have for the Winners of War season,
but they've never, like a lot of other shows, increase
each year. They've just always been a million dollars and
they've never changed that.

Well, that was the thing at the time, because I
only watched the first season. At the time, it was like,
oh my god, the prize is a million dollars.

That was huge. Now it's like it's a million dollars,

as somebody who's new to Survivor, when Zach Brown came
out and there was a big backlash because it was
like a Zach Brown episode and he was on for
longer than most of the contestants. Sure, I read something
that they actually cut a lot of mister Beast out
of the episode. That's false. Okay, so that never happened.

I being there, I was curious how much mister Beasts
they were gonna show, especially during tribal, because obviously they
did talk to him a lot more during tribal. But
I think they showed a good amount. I think it
was like the perfect amount because it showed like for
people who don't know who he is, it kind of
showed maybe I'm curious. I'd call my parents and asked
if they knew who it was. I don't think they would.

I think for his YouTube channel because they filmed his
episode the day before. They're all like die hard Survivor fans.
His crew Wow, so they were all very excited to

us afterward, like at tribal like we're writing down the names,
like at the Earth, like they were so excited to

but I don't remember it happening like something that stood
out to me when I was there.
