It's not cause I hated the movie, it's because it's

Welcome back to Magical Rewind, the show that makes you
want to grab your friends, your PJS and your popcorn
and go back to a time and all the houses
were smart, the waves, tsunamis, and the descendants were.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
A lot cheesier than they were in this one. Anyway,
we'll get into it.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
I'm Wilfredell and I'm Sabrina Bryan.

Speaker 4 (01:19):
Well, as you might have guessed we have now barreled
through the original trilogy of Descendants movies. That's hard to say,
and we've now officially hit the stage that everything does
eventually at Disney. Myself included the reboot stage, because like
we've always said, after three, we are finally free. By
the way, no one's ever said that in the history
of the world. But the message itself is true, because

(01:40):
today we were capping the fourth movie of the Descendants
franchise with a whole new focal point and plot. It
is twenty twenty four's Descendants The Rise of Red. This
becets I'm gonna say it too, by the way, like
Game of Thrones. This became the third Disney property to
get a fourth movie, high school musical Halloween Town.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
And something was in the news recently for something or
the other. I don't know. We'll get into that later, Sabrina.

Speaker 4 (02:04):
We know all about the Descendant series by this point,
and we are smack dab in the middle of its
newest installment, Wicked Wonderland, which.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
I guess I have to figure out if I.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
Have to have watched Wicked, because I don't know Wicked
at all, so I haven't seen anything with Wicked.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
I don't know Wicked. Am I gonna need to know
Wicked to watch Wicked?

Speaker 3 (02:21):
No, because I think the third movie set us up
for that. I don't think it has anything to do
with like Wizard of Oz Wicked.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
It's not.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
I don't think it's any of that franchise. I think
it's literally still in the Alice in Wonderland.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
But wait a second, they're they're gonna use a word
like wicked. Where when wicked? I know Wicked producer Lisa
saying Wicked just means evil.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
I get it.

Speaker 4 (02:44):
But at the same time, Wicked is kind of the
trademark now of Wicked, isn't it.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
I mean, yes, so there aren't they then?

Speaker 4 (02:52):
Just if it's not about anything in the Wicked world,
aren't they essentially just it's like, oh, this is this
is Star Wars world, but it's really going to be
about a.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
Lad Like really, you can't No, I don't I know.
Come on, Wicked Wonderland. They're either're playing on Wicked, aren't they.
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
I don't. I didn't take it that way.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
Oh I definitely did.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
I do not think they are, but I can see
how that would make sense in someone's world. So that's
kind of actually a good question as far as was
that the best.

Speaker 4 (03:24):
Title for this No, I mean again, well, it is
for them because they want people to watch it thinking
it has something to do with Wicked.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
That's what that's my guess.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
I think your wicked little mind is the only one
that's wickedly thinking that, William, You.

Speaker 4 (03:37):
Don't think they were trying to play into the idea
of people tuning in because the word wicked is in
the title.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Maybe, I mean, I don't think.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
I don't think that the I don't think that any
of the fans would do that. But maybe if somebody
wasn't a fan of the Descendants franchise, hasn't seen the
fourth movie, could possibly tune in thinking it has something.
So I think that's a good point. I do not
think any of the fans thought it was going to
be related to Wicked, because if they're a fan, they've

(04:05):
seen the fourth movie. Okay, then, and the first what
we were seeing is the Rise of Red, right, so
there's like a sea. They could have said the Rise
of Red and the Downfall of.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Okay, fair enough, fair enough.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
So the newest installment, Star Wars presents the Avengers Wicked
Wonderland will be debuting on the Disney Channel this month.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
But I do want to know, were you excited to
see a revamp of the series, because it's the first
Descendants movie that doesn't revolve around mal and the gang
that we've come to know.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
Were you happy to see kind of the whole reboot
of everything or were you a little like, hey, this
has nothing to.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
Do with Wicked.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Okay, So this is an answer sort of purely on
like personal experience. I got to go to the premiere
of the last Zombies movie and they were all this
whole cast was there, like the whole cast right seeing
them on the red carpet, their fresh face, they're so excited,
will you know my mama bare heart just like completely

(05:03):
takes over me.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
I ran into them.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
They were so sweet. I met several of them and
like literally.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
The sweetest kids.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
So with that experience, I was very excited to see
where this world of Descendants takes on their new characters.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
And I had no idea.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Our main character looks very, very familiar in the sense
that it could almost be a sister of our girl,
Sophia Carson, Like they look related, so I thought they
were good. It was like her twin sister, her evil
or you know what I mean. Like I thought there
was like a connection between that because it was just Red.

(05:42):
I didn't realize that it was gonna be you know
what I mean.

Speaker 4 (05:44):
Because so one of the things I found interesting about
this movie, and again I'm not saying it's necessarily bad
or good, but it's certainly a direction they took. I
found the original Descendants movies to be far more balanced,
meaning like this movie was essentially.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
All women and girls.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
Yeah, I mean, where as the original ones there was
something for the guys. You had Ja'far's Descendant you had,
I mean, there was kind of more for the boys too,
where this one really was very female focused, which again
not necessarily a bad thing, but certainly taking it in
a much different direction where they kind of it seemed
a little bit like, yeah, we're gonna leave the boys.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
By the wayside and this is going to be movie
for girls.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
I mean, would you think that that would if you
were going to put like your CEO hat on. Do
you think that has to do with like what they
found their fan base to be.

Speaker 4 (06:32):
Yeah, maybe at a certain I mean, they know Disney
doesn't do anything by accident, so exactly there, and you
know they've done some research and stuff like that. But
again coming off of Cameron Boyce and the whole kind
of the whole Last Descendant saga, there was very much
a balance to it that which I liked. You know,
it was very much prince and princess.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
It was.

Speaker 4 (06:51):
It was very much the good and evil. But there
were there were boys, there were girls. It was dancing
and everybody, and and this one it didn't it didn't
seem like that to me.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Well, I can rewind just super quickly, and I feel
like when it was my time on the channel, obviously
the Cheetah Girls fan base was you know, we found
a huge prominent fan base within the girls. Sure or
main message was girl power, right, so like we found
that versus like high school musical because of the basketballs

(07:25):
and the sports and like you know what I mean,
they so they tended to have more. And then obviously
the Jonas Brothers. It was like Cheetah Girls, everyone Jonas Brothers.
That's kind of what it became while we were on
the channel. So maybe that's how they see zombies. Maybe
they see zombies as a more male maybe, you know,

(07:46):
maybe pull.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
But I guess it would be like girl female.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
When they announce Cheetah girls for if it was a
boy band.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
That's what That's what this seems like to me, is
like they they completely swapped it. Which again I'm not
saying it's a bad thing in any way, for Disney
doesn't do anything by accident. Sure they did a ton
of research and they were like, oh, eighty two percent
of the people watching the Descendants franchise, like you said,
like a zombies, Hey, sixty eight percent of the zombies
are audience, by the way, making up all these numbers,

(08:14):
but absolutely are our boys, where as eighty two percent
for Descendants are girls. So we're going to lean into that.
So again, not a bad thing. It just it was
noticeable to me where it's like, oh, this is essentially
all girls, Like the whole cast is essentially all girls.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
And I think I was mesmerized by several other things
to notice that. But you would like because most likely
I was gravitated. If that's the case, I was fully in.
I mean, if we're going to do early thoughts, I
was fully in. Starting with Alis in Wonderland and Cinderella
are legitimately well Cinderella is my favorite favorite. Second to

it is Alice in Wonderland.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
So yeah, so you or you were sucked in right away.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
I've got the hand of Montana, the best of both worlds. Baby,
I got it all.

Speaker 1 (08:58):
I was just a wig the entire ima.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
It was just there's many tell Oh yeah, no kidding,
but anyway, we did see the same thing with zombies
once they hit three. High School Musical also became a
completely different TV show after the original trilogy. So you
you've already said that you were you were in. I
I'm one of those people where I watch all of
these from a distance, you know what I mean, like

(09:20):
because I'm a fifty year old man.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
So the idea of.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
Like I'm going to go watch Descendants four, it's more
it's homework for me, right, and so I'm always enthralled
when I'm sucked into a world. My problem, which we'll
get into is time travel, if it's not written perfectly,
is very very thing.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
You were hung up.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
But I love it. It's my favorite. It's one of
my favorite genres in the world is time travel. So
it's very problematic.

Speaker 3 (09:44):
It's it's scary to do so right, Like that is
a hard, hard choice to make because time travel brings
up so many questions that have to be it's right.

Speaker 4 (09:55):
Not just that, but I mean they disappear, you know,
after this big fight scene, they disappear to go into
the past, and when they come back there earlier in
the so their younger selves would have been there. Yeah,
And if their younger selves weren't there, then why did
the Queen of Hearts not notice her daughter was not
sitting next to her the entire time?

Speaker 2 (10:13):
Right?

Speaker 4 (10:14):
This is where time travel gets uber problematic because it's like,
are there two people in the same time it is.
I'm just saying, you're you're touching on one of my
favorite fantasy tropes. And the reason it's the third rail
of fantasy is because time travel is very, very.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
Difficult to do the right way.

Speaker 4 (10:35):
Also, how you do an entire movie about this mythical
dance and then we don't see the dance is insane
to me, Like why we're we're The whole thing is
built up to the castle, coming, Homecoming, Homecoming. We talk
about it in the present, we talk about it in
the past. It's the biggest thing in the world. We're
gonna leave a day before the dance. Are you kidding me?

Speaker 2 (10:53):
Yeah, I will.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
We'll get to that at the end because I have
so much to say about that. How do we not
see the I know, well, let's just let's get it
and then well, because there's so many things, I mean,
myas lists long, I mean, it is just.

Speaker 4 (11:08):
All right, there you go, so it can pique your
interest right now this movie, because as we've said, the
entire franchise is streaming.

Speaker 1 (11:15):
Home is Disney at plus, and.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
Like my grandma used to say, Home is where the
heart is, and the heart can cost anywhere between fifteen
to fifty dollars these days, depending on the package you select.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
I guess it.

Speaker 4 (11:25):
You know, it depends if you like sports or have
kids old enough to enjoy the spicy your fare of Hulu.
So choose wisely and slowly go broke with all your
streaming options. That's what my grandmother used to say. Did
you even know there's such a thing as MGM plus?
And some show called from supposed to be good? Anyway,
I had to watch this movie before.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
That's exactly everything's.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
Streaming now, everything streaming at this point, and I yeah's
great idea what that is?

Speaker 4 (11:48):
Anyway, watch this movie before or after we talk about it?
Life is grand?

Speaker 1 (11:52):
Do what you want?

Speaker 4 (11:54):
Rise of Red debut on the Disney Plus channel, Well,
Disney Plus, it's not really a channel July twelfth, twenty
twenty four, or then made its way to the Channel
Channel channel one month later, a slightly altered formula. But
as we've seen in the studio has been, you know,
kind of tinkering with this idea for years.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
Now. Do we go on Disney first? Do we go
to Disney Plus? Is it a d com?

Speaker 4 (12:12):
Is it a wonderful world? They're kind of still playing
with all the ins and outs. The last Ascendance movie
was released in twenty nineteen, five years earlier, and the
IP continued to be a huge hit for the studio
with specials and attractions. But as you know, puberty and
salary increases hit and they need to make some adjustments.
It filmed under the working title The Pocket Watch, and
fans were immediately alerted that China Ann McLain, a major

standout from the last two movies, would reprise her role
as Uma, which is awesome because she's great, and it
would start to take place within the world of Alice
in Wonderland.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
Is it Alice in Wonderland. Alice and Wonderland, It's Alice in.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
One Palace, right in One Winterland.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
It's Alice. It's Alice Alice, which is a different sitcom
from the seventies.

Speaker 4 (12:52):
Filming took place in Atlanta at the beginning of twenty
twenty three and ran for almost two months. And another
very small difference with this movie it was released under
the banner of a Disney original movie, not a Disney
Channel original movie, So this is a dumb instead of
a dcom.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
It's a dumb which.

Speaker 4 (13:08):
Is normally not a term we hear much with Disney
because it, I think usually means Dominatrix.

Speaker 1 (13:12):
And the biggest difference here is, of course, the budget.
Now I think this is right. We did some research,
so wow, since it was a Disney movie and not
just for the Channel, the movie allegedly cost everybody's sitting
eighty five million dollars. I'm gonna let that's it. Eighty

(13:32):
five million dollars.

Speaker 4 (13:34):
Compare this to the ten to fifteen million spent on
the originals, and we should be up for a massive upgrade.
I want to see lightsabers, I want to see the
Millennium falcon. I want to see you know Brave Heart, Yes,
my god, eighty five.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
Well, do we remember at all like a general idea
of what the last Zombies movie was, because that's it.

Speaker 1 (13:55):
I think it was thirty five to forty.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
That was like the most at that point.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
Yeah, so this is if that's true and it was
in the thirty five or forty ranges, is more than
double g y yeah, g Willakers.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
As gee yeah, g will Oker.

Speaker 1 (14:10):
There you go. On a much more serious note.

Speaker 4 (14:13):
One large hurdle the series had to face was the
loss of one of its stars, of course, Cameron Boyce,
who had tragically passed away in the break between the movies,
and McClain was consulted to figure out the best way
to tribute him. This time, the studio had a weird
but capitalistically understandable Bedfellow it is this is amazing reported
that the amount of success these films were having. Disney
collaborated with Mattel, who contributed to the costume design, helping

make decisions based on what would look best on Descendants dolls.
Never forget that commerce Raign and Supreme and again that
to me also probably has a lot to do with
the largely female forward cast is.

Speaker 1 (14:48):
Dolls and search and everything else.

Speaker 4 (14:51):
And you know that's we always talk about the synergy
of Disney. They want to grab with both hands, as
any major corporation does. And I want to take from here.
I want to take from here. We want to make
sure this is good. We want to say and ice cream,
we want you name it.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
Ye want to do it and looking forward like yeah,
like the predictions of Disney Channel cap of Disney once again,
just like thinking ahead.

Speaker 1 (15:11):
Yep, that's what they do.

Speaker 2 (15:17):

And so they also made some very big casting moves
what you're going to get into, because much like the
first Descendants, we have some prime stunt casting and decisions
about which cast members would return. Before principal filming began, though,
the cast spent about a month together in boot camp
to practice dance routines, working with a harnessed sword fighting,
and any other special training their specific roles required, and
probably to get their butterflies a bit under control, because

I'm sure many of these stars grew up watching The
Descendants and now they were starring in it.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
That's got to be.

Speaker 4 (16:19):
Rough and redefining it from the ground up was certainly
the right move. Because Rise of Red drew in six
point seven million views in the first three days on
Disney Plus, making it the most watched original movie premiere
in the streamers history, and then within twelve weeks it
accumulated thirty three million total views. Now for context, this

(16:40):
is more than Taylor Swift's Eras Tour movie. During just
July twelfth through July eighteenth, it topped the charts with
over one billion viewing minutes yikes. And on the awards front,
it took home five Children and Family Emmy Awards Outstanding
Fiction Special outstanding choreography, outstanding hair and makeup, outstanding music direction,

outstanding original song for Red, and outstanding use of no.

Speaker 1 (17:05):
Rules for time travel. I threw in that last one.

Speaker 4 (17:09):
And since it is a modern day dom ooh, that's
gonna be very strange to say. We have to talk
about the soundtrack, which by the way, surpassed twenty six
million streams globally shortly after its release. As always, we
have a lot of original songs performed by the cast,
but some throwbacks as well. We have so this is
Love and you take on the classic Cinderella Prince Charming duet.

(17:29):
We have the new red version of UMA's What's My Name?
First heard in Descendants too, and a new cover of
the classic jone Jet Jam. Say that three times bad
reputation now without spoiling your feelings on the movie, although
I think I already know your feelings on the movie.
Dance and soundtrack expert Sabrina, where do you think this
installment sits musically within the franchise?

Speaker 3 (17:48):
I think for the music, I would say that second
movie and the first movie Rotten to the Core and
What's My Name still are my.

Speaker 2 (17:59):
Top top two.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
I agree.

Speaker 3 (18:02):
However, I think some of these songs that we are
going to get into. I remembered them, and I'm trying
to think of like the third movie. I remember because
we just did it, saying like, I don't have a
jingle in my head. I they weren't as memorable in
that third movie of Descendants, So I think that that
move the movie definitely took a good step up rather

(18:26):
than flatlining. And that's kind of how I felt the
third movies music was. This was a lot better to me.

Speaker 1 (18:34):
Here's what I would say. I don't disagree. It's definitely
better than the third one.

Speaker 4 (18:38):
First of all, we've talked about this with a couple
other movies recently that were more recent in the lexicon
of the musical of Disney. Hamilton changed the whole ball game.
This seemed very hamilton esque with a lot of their music.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
That's a good point.

Speaker 4 (18:52):
The second thing I would say is this was the
most on the nose music we've had for any Descendants,
meaning the thing I hate about musicals, which they avoided
a lot, they threw into this movie, which is we're
gonna sing the stuff we're doing.

Speaker 1 (19:05):
I need this pocket watch. No, I'm gonna grab it
from you. No, I have it now and now my
sword is out and it's.

Speaker 4 (19:10):
Like, okay, you're just singing the stuff that you're doing, right,
And that happened more in this movie than in any
of the movies I can remember Zombies or any of
the other descendants.

Speaker 1 (19:21):
This was really like we are singing a little bit.

Speaker 3 (19:25):
Zombies does it a little bit, but this one for sure.
I mean there's one very long.

Speaker 1 (19:33):
Song in this one, or in Zombies very long song.

Speaker 2 (19:36):
No, in this movie.

Speaker 1 (19:37):
Okay, that is so long, I know.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
And it was primarily talking slash saying what you're doing
is that?

Speaker 1 (19:46):
Yeah? Rapping?

Speaker 2 (19:48):
Which is what? Isn't that like Hamilton esque? Great?

Speaker 1 (19:51):
Yeah? Very much?

Speaker 2 (19:52):
Is that the genre that it goes into? So yeah, agreed, agreed.
And I don't know if it's you it's like tainting
my brain or what. But like, I didn't like it.
Now I don't think I like.

Speaker 3 (20:07):
Before we'll like you are starting to infiltrate my well.

Speaker 2 (20:11):
I think it's going they're trying to develop these musicals.

Speaker 4 (20:15):
They're trying to do a modern version of There's there's
a word for it. I forget what the name is.
And some people are going to blast me because I'm
not a huge musical fan, but like the old Rogers
and Hammerstein stuff and things like Pirates of Ben's Ants
and things like that, this was it was the spoken word.
I am a modern major general minimum, so this was
It's a very old school style of musical. I mean,

(20:35):
this is not something Disney has invented. It's Hamilton took
it to a different level while making it all rapping.
But again, there there was no real dialogue in Hamilton.
There's a couple lines, but for the most part when
they're when they're talking, it's to music. So this is
their kind of it seems like trying to do a
hybrid of the two. But this was the most glaring
to me of we're literally singing what we're doing at

(20:56):
the time, which again rotten to the core is the
song like You. I go back to that where it
gets the point across without them being like we're bad
guys and now I'm stealing an apple, like you know
what I mean, It's like they, yeah, you knew what
was up, so yeah, but yes, anyway, again, some of
the songs I thought were very catchy.

Speaker 3 (21:18):
Certainly No Yeah, I did I for me and I
don't know why it's always the villain's music to me
that I'm like, oh yeah, I love this, I love this,
I love this right, and then there's one song that
is the standout of is anyone else hearing this or
is it just me?

Speaker 2 (21:36):
And I can't wait to get it?

Speaker 1 (21:37):
Okay, you got it all right? So here we go.

Speaker 4 (21:40):
Let's get ready for the fight of our lives and
get our hands dirty for the perfect revenge, because life
is sweeter when we have our synopsis. After the Queen
of Hearts and Sites of coup On Orodon, her rebellious
daughter Red and Cinderella's perfectionist daughter Chloe joined forces and
travel back in time to try and undo the traumatic
event that set Red's mother down her villainous path. And
with that, you know, what are your early thoughts on

(22:01):
the Fourth Descendants At Like I.

Speaker 3 (22:04):
Said, these are a mix of two of my favorite,
all time favorite Disney classics.

Speaker 2 (22:12):
There's so much to be.

Speaker 3 (22:13):
Said that I think is absolutely incredible, but there are
some questions that are like, oh yeah, oh. But for
the most part, I loved this movie. For the most part,
I really did. We There's definitely things to dissect, but
right from the start I was very excited I think
that the first beginning part is something that like already

(22:35):
we're going to be talking about of wow.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
Did that just take that long to get us there?
So we'll go ahead to it.

Speaker 1 (22:41):
The I mean, I don't disagrete it.

Speaker 4 (22:44):
I certainly did not hate this movie by any stretch
of the imagination. The new two women that are the
young women that are cast as as Red and Chloe
are great, Yes, really really good there you want to
watch them. They work great together, they have good chemistry,

whole lot of sense.

one situation in particular.

directed by a new name to the decom, fold Or
Jennifer Fang. Jennifer started in the film festival world with
her Sundance Darling Award winning movies Advantageous and Half Life,

but then jumped into the world of TV directing episodes
of Riverdale, Quantico, The Boys, Agents of Shield, and Stargirl
and this was definitely her highest profile project and first
with Disney, and things obviously went very very well because
she is the director of the new Descendants as well,
the one where they definitely are not trying to play
on wicket. And let's get to the cast. Welcome to
the Fold. The new star of Descendants and a new

face for the channel, Kylie Cantrell. She is Princess Read,
the daughter of the Queen of Hearts, Kylie, who came
up through the YouTube and the Tiktoks also grew up
on the Disney Channel. Well not on Disney well anyway.
She's best known as Gabby on the show Gabby Duran
and the Unsittables. Also appeared on Raven's home high school
musical the series and Just Roll with It. And boy

Was a disgusting one hundred and six minutes.

We know that musicals have a tendency to run long
because of the amount of songs we hear. But let's
hope this new series of movies can right the wrong descendants.
Rise of Red is ninety four minutes, four minutes off
target and not in the good way. But honestly, they
shaved off twelve minutes from its predecessor. So that's impressive
and I'm gonna give him a small golf clap for that.

Wicked Wonderland, which again isn't playing on Wicked at all,
can find even four more to lose.

And on the writer's front, we see that Sarah Perriot
and Josane McGibbon, I hope I'm saying that right. Joseanne McGibbon,
the longest running writing team in Hollywood, get their characters
by credit. They are the writers of the original and
we now have Dan Frey and Rue Summer with screenplay credit.
This writing team came absolutely out of nowhere, getting two
scripts on the Heralded Blacklist, which is an animal which

is an annual achievement given to the best unproduced scripts
of the year, and then selling a ton of movies
that were never really made. Years later, they got this,
which was their first real big break, and things seemed
to be coming together for him because they also wrote
the newest Descendant's debuting this month. It is one of
those overnight success stories that took a decade.

The movie opens up with Uma telling us all about Orodon,
the kingdom where all of our favorite fairy tales are true.
It formed thirty years ago when Beast married Belle and
they were survived by banishing the villains to the Island
of Lost, where Uma, the daughter of the Little Mermaids
Nemesis Ursula, grew up. She catches us up on where
we left off, which is Malan Benner now on the throne,
running things fairly even for the villains. But now they're

(31:53):
off with Jay and Evie on a new adventure, forming
alliances with distant Lands and not being paid for these
movies at all anymore. And in their absence, guess who's
left in charge. Umah, a far cry from her days,
is the bad guy, and she is ready to shake
things up. And we can already see some of this
new budget at work with the three D map in
the opening, which already looks better.

We're now at the Ordon Prep School.

Speaker 4 (32:13):
We see the sign office of Headmaster Fairy Godmother is
being replaced with office of Headmaster. Uma Uma barges into
her new office and her predecessor, another familiar face from
the movies, the Fairy Godmother, is there. So glad we
get the synergy of some of the last films because
she was a fun character. She explains this job is
not easy, but it can be fulfilling. Uba Uma casually
says that she can handle a few prep school kids

(32:34):
and calls in her rowdy pirates.

Speaker 1 (32:36):
Then wish is the Fairy Godmother a very nice retirement.

Speaker 4 (32:39):
Fairy Godmother reminds her, I'm not leaving the franchise hunt.

Speaker 1 (32:42):
She's been chosen as.

Speaker 4 (32:43):
The new president of Ordon University, keeping her close by
for the next film. I'm sure she's prepared a color
coded list of tasks for Uma, but Uma already knows
her first order of business. All kingdoms are now welcome
to at tendap even Wonderland. Fairy Godmother is not pleased.
Wonderland is hostile. The Queen of Hearts refused to join
Orodon and they had to cover up the rabbit hole.

(33:04):
Uma insists that Mal put her in charge to make changes,
and nowadays Uma sees the goodness in everyone. It's time
Wonderland got a similar chance. She hands an unconvinced Fairy
Godmother a letter for Princess Read and looks over at
a picture of Carlos, the character played by the Lake
Cameron Boyce, hanging on the wall. She sadly says, it's
what Carlos would have wanted, So do it for me,
Do it in honor of him, and it was a
very nice moment. I even googled if they talk about

(33:27):
how he passed away, and that's certainly it's an interesting
choice they made because while of course the actor passed
away so suddenly and horribly, the character didn't have to.
And because the other four are off on another adventure
that we're never going to see that's just mentioned, they
easily could have put the character in with them and

(33:47):
just said they're gone. Now they're off doing something else.
So it was an interesting choice to honor him in
that way, I thought, where they also killed off the character,
which I think is sweet in a way.

Speaker 2 (33:59):
Yes, I thought.

Speaker 3 (34:00):
I mean, we're two minutes in and I'm I'm tearing
up because how incredible that Disney like had such high
respects for him. Yeah, to actually go that, because they
could have easily just put him in with the other
three and that was it, and it's like they decided
to honor him, and I just think that's so incredible

(34:22):
and no, like the execs of Disney, just that they
did it right. I think it was the best way
to honor him.

Speaker 4 (34:30):
It was the movie equivalent of retiring his number, like yeah, first, yes, athlete,
And I thought it was Yeah. It was really classy
the way that they did that, because again they didn't
have to. The character did not pass away, but they
were like, no, he is the character, so he did
and it was very very sweet. Uma wipes weay her
tears and fairy Godmother agrees. She weighs her hand over
the letter. Bibbity bobby boo. With that, the letter flies

(34:52):
into the air and out the window and uh yeah, again,
very touching tribute.

Speaker 1 (34:56):
We're in the woods now.

Speaker 4 (34:57):
The letter makes its way to a giant blocked off
rabbit hole and sneaks its way in right into the
forbidden Wonderland, a dark world of mystery and magic, right
in line with Alice in Wonderland. We see it arrive
at the castle, the Queen of Hearts, who has a
reputation for being downright ruthless. We hear her announcement to
the city subjects of Wonderland. You have one minute to
comply with her Royal Majesty's curfew, or else it's off

(35:19):
with your head.

Speaker 1 (35:20):
It's like, damn, why damn?

Speaker 4 (35:23):
There is a murder in this movie. There was a
murder in this movie. We will get to it, but
there is a straight up murder in.

Speaker 2 (35:32):
This movie, not just like one specific thing.

Speaker 3 (35:35):
It is spoken of like that aspect of it actually happening.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
Yeah, so many times. And here's the thing.

Speaker 3 (35:43):
I almost had Monroe watch this with me because we're
getting a chance to go and see this next movie
and she's coming with me, and so I kind of
wanted to have her at least be able to recognize
the big characters and things like that, and I but
I didn't have time to watch sit Down Watch with
her yet. And I'm glad because I'm kind of not
sure that's kind of a little old for her.

Speaker 1 (36:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (36:08):
Off with their head, which again, a lot of the
old fairy tales, if you go back and look at him,
are very murdery.

Speaker 1 (36:13):
Oh yes, I mean Jemmy usually cleans him up.

But the car they started making me think of the
Queen of Hearts in the cartoon and how crazy she
is like her off, I mean, she is screaming and
she's just a psychopath.

So the dude who wrote Alice in Wonderland was a
famous opium attict.

Speaker 1 (36:32):
This guy was whacked as he was writing. So yeah, crazy,
So this.

Is a big choice for them to go into this
world because it is so out of the ordinary.

Speaker 1 (36:44):
I thought they And here's the other thing.

It's a little crazy, but I thought they could have
gone a little farther with it, if I'm honest with you,
not the murdering.

Would we have gone into thirteen? I was when I
saw this caterpillar, like.

All that kind of stuff, I put all that stuff
in there.

Well, we might see it. The wicked part is coming,

Alice's Bakery is a big cartoon for Disney.

Okay, the baking aspect kind of sturgeon to it. Yeah,

Okay, Well, everyone returns home in a single file line.
But there's one person who dares to resist the Queen's orders,
and it's her very own daughter, Princess Red. We see
Red wandering the streets past curfew, dodging the Queen's army,
and vandalizing your mom's portrait. We also get our first song,
Red introducing yourself as a rebellious, fiery teenager who feels
stifled by her mother strict tyrannical rule.

Speaker 1 (37:49):

I will also note these costumes and the color of
all this is really cool, which is a huge step
off the bat production wise.

Speaker 1 (37:55):
It just visually was very stunning.

Speaker 4 (37:57):
And when the song ends, a claw, like a claw
from one of those claw games, appears and through the air,
dropping her new hole in the top of the castle.

Speaker 1 (38:05):
Okay, now, Sabrina, you know this.

I'm legally and contractually required to ask you, as our
musical expert of magical rewind, what are your thoughts on
the first number, the song and the dancing of Red.

Speaker 2 (38:15):
I this was, and it was like, all right, I
love it.

Speaker 3 (38:18):
However, this is like one of the things with Sabrinac's
I was gonna mention, we're like past the five minute.

Speaker 2 (38:23):
Mark before we get our first musical, which is.

Not along the lines of descendants that I can remember.

I feel like musical number yeah.

Oh, within like the first two minutes like yeah, we
get the little like voiceover thing, and then it goes
right into rotten in the core, right, We're rotten to
the core right, So this what took a little bit
of time, But I will say this wasn't necessarily choreography
dominated in the sense of dance. It was a lot
more of like a high impact, high like energy like

fight scene already, which set it to a different level
for me and I love that.

Speaker 2 (39:00):
So that was very cool. And the cloth thing, that's
like my favorite game at any arcade, and.

Speaker 3 (39:04):
The ideas like getting picked up by one like my
David Busters has one where you can go in and
they actually let you do the cloth.

It's like dream come true.

Speaker 1 (39:13):
That would probably my problem is.

I would keep trying to pick you up and it
would the clo would just be coming off your head
because I can never like.

And it's like slowly got it almost had sad, but

Yeah. No, this was a This was a very very
cool Yes, the character and all.

That, it's noting unlike the other ones.

This is already looking very green screen versus the big
like set pieces that we've had in the past.

This looks way more green screen.

Didn't. Yeah, it didn't bother me, I mean, but it was.

It was something that jumped out at me so much
versus the big production yeah sets that we normally have, which.

Is odd because I'd like to know how they did it,
because if you you're jumping from twelve million to fifteen
million dollars to eight five million dollars and you're not
using practical sets, that's a problem. But yeah, it was.
Uh it's a cool world and a great way to
intro the character.

I thought, yes, for sure, this character and this song
and her vocals and everything was like a yes, yes, yes,
check mark check, please let's go here.

Speaker 4 (40:19):
Let me ask you a weird philosophical question about what
this does to the original characters from Descendants, because the
whole point was, especially in Descendants two and three, is
mal Is coming into her own not only as a queen,
like as a leader. She's finding herself, but she's also
doesn't want anybody who's been through what she's been through

(40:40):
to go through what she did, right, So why didn't
she care about Wonderland at all?

Speaker 3 (40:49):
Well? I oh, that's a good point. That might have
been on her list, but we just didn't get there.

Speaker 2 (40:56):
I mean, okay, that could have been that.

Speaker 3 (40:58):
Sick I wish that, And again the create like the
creativity of it. How far were these movies like written
out right like a series like you know, Game of
Thrones and stuff is like, you know.

Speaker 1 (41:12):
Perfectly planned. Yeah, no, this one undoubtedly.

Was not one of those things that it's like it
got written later on.

Speaker 4 (41:19):
Right, But then again rewriting as I do because this
is just the way my brain works. And I know
people are like, you know what, they're to rewrite the movie, well,
then do your own podcast. So for two or three exactly,
So wouldn't it have been easier a line or two
about you know, I would have had her come in,
had Uma come in, sit down and say we're also

going to admit Wonderland, and the fairy Godmother drops her
her wand in terms round says, how do you even
know about that? No one even knows about Wonderland? This
was a secret that has been like how.

Speaker 2 (41:53):
Could you wet under the rug? Yeah, as opposed to
everybody knew about it.

Speaker 4 (41:57):
Because then I'm like, well, then why wouldn't Malan all
the other vks want also to release the people from Wonderland.

Speaker 3 (42:03):
Or a line like mal is putting me on this
mission for something like it's part of her like it's
part of her big general life.

Speaker 4 (42:13):
The queen wasn't supposed to tell you about Wonderland. Nobody
knows anything about this. Well, that's why I'm in charge, right, Yeah,
one or two. This is where it's like one or
two lines can change an entire story point because with them,
the way they made it sound like is everybody knows
about Wonderland, right, and Wonderland is so bad that forget
the island that we know about. They can come in,

but even the villain kids from the island don't want
to have anything to do with Wonderland. So either even
play that up, or play up that nobody knows about Wonderland,
because this was just kind of like, oh, so there's
another island and now Mal and her friends didn't give
it about any.

Speaker 1 (42:45):
Of those people, you know what I mean. So this
is me overthinking. I'm sorry, this is how you know
my story.

Speaker 2 (42:53):
That makes actually like great sense, So you know.

have no idea how long this Disney franchise is going
to be. Have they created a third movie or six,

but like you know, it's it's very interesting to watch
them because I had been obviously not watched so many
of them for so long.

back inside the castle. The friend who picked her up
with the giant claw was Maddox Hatter, so the mad
Hatter controlling the claw and saving her from the guards.
She says she's a prisoner of Wonderland and a lost cause,
but Maddox disagrees, especially since he's her tutor in charge

of preparing her for the future. But she wonders what future.

Speaker 4 (45:37):
Her mom's never gonna let her leave Wonderland and wants
to turn her into the next evil Queen. A sympathetic
Maddox Hatter then reveals something he just finished, a time
machine that.

Speaker 1 (45:46):
Is technically just a pocket watch. And I was like, oh.

Speaker 4 (45:49):
Time travel ooh again, I love it. I absolutely love it.
But you are opening a whole big can of worms.

Speaker 2 (45:59):
Well, it's not a of worms, it's a list of rules.
And yeah, don't follow the list of rules. You have
officially pissed off.

Speaker 1 (46:07):
Well, it just here again.

Speaker 4 (46:09):
Time travel is very difficult, but it will take a
moment in time that will give It will take her
to a moment in time that will give her exactly
what her heart wants most. But he warns her when
you alter the fabric time, there can be some unpredictable consequences. Yeah,
she thinks she can live with that, but he warns
her everything can change. You could lose your mother entirely,
which I thought was a strange thing to tell her,

(46:30):
because if she loses is again time travel. If she
loses her mother, she doesn't exist, so she can't lose
her mom. That's literally impossible if she's traveling through time.
And yes, I said literally impossible. When it comes to
something fictional come out. Uh, It's like it's like the
story time Machine was HG. Wells, where though you know
the story was he goes, he gets his wife is killed,

(46:54):
an inventor's wife is killed right in front of him,
and he wants to invent a time machine to go
back and save her, and no matter or what he does,
he can't do it.

Speaker 1 (47:01):
He can't do it. He finally falls asleep in the machine.

Speaker 4 (47:03):
He gets knocked unconscious and he wakes up like millions
of years in the future, I think it is, and
he meets these two new races, the Elloys.

Speaker 1 (47:10):
And the I'm gonna forget who they are.

Speaker 4 (47:12):
But he eventually gets an answer to his question, which is,
why can't I save my wife? And the smartest man
in the world at the time essentially says to him,
because if you save your wife, you never would have
invented the time machine. So the thing that made you
invent the time machine was her dying. So you can
invent the time machine if she's not dead. And so
it's a circle. And that's how you have to think

(47:32):
of time travel. It's crazy. So he's like, you could
lose your mom entirely. No, you can't, because then she'd
never be born. So yeah, here's where the here's where
I go crazy with time travels. But anyway, I love it.

Speaker 1 (47:44):
I love it.

Speaker 4 (47:45):
It's just yeah, he's changed his mind, by the way,
and walks away with the time machine. It's too dangerous
that He's like, here's this magical thing of mystery.

Speaker 1 (47:53):
Now you can't have.

Speaker 2 (47:53):
It putting it in front of a teenager.

Speaker 4 (47:55):
Yes, exactly, all of your dreams could come true with
this I'm gonna put this way in the classic, but
it's just too dangerous and he cares too much about her.
She hugs him and thanks him, and right as she
hugs him, I was like, ah, she stole that, ye,
and says, at least somebody still loves her. Then they
hear the Jack of Diamonds search the castle. If the
Queen finds her in Maddox's room, he'll be in serious trouble.
So he hits a button and she's sucked right up

(48:17):
through the ceiling. She's transported to her bedroom. She lands
on her red heart bed and reveals she stole the
time machine.

Speaker 1 (48:23):
What I didn't see that coming.

Speaker 4 (48:24):
Yet, I did from Maddock's She's about to press it
when she hears Maddox's voice in her head, you could
lose your mother entirely, And with that she hesitates outside
Cinderella's castle. Now we see Chloe and King Charming in
an intense sword fight. Eventually, after some very cool choreography,
blue haired Chloe captures her dad's sword, so he jokingly
uses a pretzel stick for the final attack. It was
a very cute mother or very cute father daughter kind

(48:47):
of scene. She calls it cheating, and he calls her
too serious, but she explains when she's competing, she represents
all of Cinderella's berg.

Speaker 1 (48:54):
I love that they just put berg on the end
of things.

Speaker 4 (48:57):
It's like, h really, that's all, that's all it is.

Speaker 1 (49:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (49:07):
Then Cinderella arrives and greets her family, eventually slow dancing
with her husband and briefly singing, So this.

Is love originally from Cinderella, which I know was I
do not. I I stay away from commenting on women's looks.
I try to do that.

Speaker 4 (49:22):
It's it's just it's not something that anybody should be
talking about.

Speaker 1 (49:27):
Brandy is aging remarkably well.

I just honest, she's so elegant and like like, yeah
she did, and she just like and I loved the
blue hair choice for this.

version of Cinder or of so this is love like

and her mom and says she's gonna make a great queen.
Of course, I would have to say, diamond shoes probably
not the most comfortable thing you're gonna wear.

No, But like bro I made a similar but more
frozen themed for her birthday last year, and like Homie,
wore them every day. I couldn't get them off of her.
It was like the perfect kid's ten.

The Jack of Hearts doesn't know who actually vandalized the portrait,

Then speak of the devil Princess Red arrives and the
Queen of Hearts points out the crime, wondering if she
should punish the soldier who let it happen.

Speaker 1 (51:58):
Should they poke thorns in his eyes? Or be off
with his head? This is when I was like strong,
because I was like did I just hear this?

Speaker 2 (52:08):
And when knocked out of myself, I was like, damn.

Speaker 4 (52:12):
Like whoa, whoa, yeah, amazing. But given the power to decide,
Red picks off with his hat. The Queen of Hearts
calls Red a disappointment. Over the years, she's learned it's
better to be feared than love, so she tells her
daughter to try again get it right, or she'll show
her punishment. Red size and looks back at her mother.
Then just in time, Maddox Hatter enters again with a

(52:32):
royal delivery. The letter floats in the air and opens.
It's UMA's voice, Dear Queen of Hearts, Empress of Wonderland,
as the new Principle of Ordon Prep, it is my
honor to invite your daughter Red at the Princess of Wonderland,
to attend our school. I hope you'll join us for
the welcome day ceremony. If you accept this invitation, she'll
serve as your key. The Queen of Hearts is shocked
at Uma. From pirate to principle. Another villain's gone soft.
So obviously all these people know each other, but they're

(52:55):
separate in worlds. And I like how they did that,
but they could have done it differently anyway. Maddox Hatter
hides his excitement. Red may have a future after all.
If she goes to Ordon Prep, she gets to leave Wonderland,
but she knows her mother hates Ordon. But to red surprise,
the Queen of Hearts is ecstatic.

Speaker 1 (53:10):
We accept. She tells Red to pack her bags and
put on something respectable for once, and which is weird
because she looks great at Cinderella's castle. Chloe runs down
the steps in her new sneakers. They fit perfectly. Her
mom and dad are waiting by the horse and carriage
with all Chloe's bags. King Charming can't come because their son, Chad.
Chad Charming has a college tournament.

Speaker 4 (53:28):
So we love Chad. So Chloe and her mom head
off to school together. Was it Chad Charming from the
other ones?

Speaker 1 (53:34):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (53:34):
And okay, we've got to pause on that. Do you
remember what Chad Charming look like?

He's a white kid.

Speaker 2 (53:41):

Maybe like an Asian man and a black woman can
get together and have a white kid, or an Asian
woman can somehow when she was a kid not be
English and white.

The cast scene mostly you can, you know, like I said,
see someone and like understand, like, oh, I don't know.

I think it's again like a Hamilton thing where it's
one of those things where it doesn't matter that a
black actor is playing George Washington or that a Latino
actor is playing you know, Alexander Hamilton.

Lisa says it's one of the plot parts you're supposed
to ignore because Cinderella is briefly seen in one of
the previous Descendants movies, so it's just cra Yeah, you're
just kind of supposed to forget that that. Don't look
behind the curtain.

I think, yet again, this is not all the movies
being written at the same time. This is going as
we're going as we get picked up for the next correct,

at all in this world. It just doesn't which I'm fine.
