Speaker 7 (00:39):
My god, of course, of course it's a chain.

Speaker 8 (00:42):
Well, thank you, Yeah, happy birthday?

Speaker 9 (00:44):
Will they have to they have to do that because
they weren't allowed to sing happy birthday at chain restaurants.

Speaker 5 (00:51):
Probably you can because you have a birthday, can't you?

Speaker 2 (00:54):
But you can on like restaurant.

Speaker 9 (00:56):
Why is it that every restaurant had its own happy
birthday song because.

Speaker 4 (01:00):
Friends who worked at another one. It wasn't it, We'd
be Tuesday.

Speaker 9 (01:02):
I had two friends who are married that met I
think they met working at the same restaurant.

Speaker 4 (01:06):
They still sing the birthday song.

Speaker 5 (01:08):
Yeah, it's gonna be copyright.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
And copyright.

Speaker 7 (01:13):
I spend most of my birthdays as a kid at
Benny Hannah, so I would get the Benny Hannah birthday.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Song and then a shrimp flip to me, which was
which was the best.

Speaker 4 (01:21):
Benny Hannah when you were a kid.

Speaker 7 (01:22):
Every every birthday I would go to Benny Hannah. I
loved it, loved it.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
It's so fun. It's the best.

Speaker 7 (01:29):
My dad did not because he would always say he
would get the Hanna's revenge, which did not end well
for the next day. So he was like, oh, it's
Will's birthday.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Indy's favorite thing.

Speaker 9 (01:41):
As we go see a movie that there's a mall
that has a Benny Hannah and a movie theater, and
we go and I'm like, it's I'm always like, this
is not gonna be fun, because you know how I
feel about malls, you know what.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
Every time it's fun.

Speaker 5 (01:53):
It's so funny what he.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
Wanted to do for his birthday this year.

Speaker 9 (01:56):
So we went and saw the Five Nights of Freddy's
two and then we went to the Benny.

Speaker 8 (01:59):
Hannah Epic Birthday weekend.

Speaker 9 (02:02):
Yes, like a birthday birthday, but like they even they
even did like six seven in oil on Flaming six seven.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Like see so all the kids get you get to
Onion Tower. It's the happy day and come on.

Speaker 6 (02:16):
So we have a local one near us Will called
Something's Fishy. It is not an you know, chain of
Benny Hannah, but it is. It's a hibachi grill place
and my brother also loves Benny Hannah, So growing up,
my brother always went I always went to Red Robin
for my birthday, and my brother always went to Bennie Hanna.

Speaker 4 (02:36):
Apparently, So you're going to Benni Hannah today.

Speaker 5 (02:39):
Will I hope you are her?

Speaker 6 (02:41):
But we went to We went to Something's Fishy when
Adler was only like two, and now it is tied
to some of my face, some of my favorite memories.
So it was like the year before my grandfather died
and he let Adler ride his little walker, like my
grandfather was pushing it, and Adler rode the walker, and
Adler remembers it like he's like, and we got a
picture of him on it, which probably helps the memory.

(03:02):
I don't know if he actually remembers it or if
he just knows the picture. But then that same night,
it's the only time he's ever done it in his
entire life. We got home from the birthday dinner and
all of a sudden, we're like, where's Adler. He had
decided to climb in the bathtub, fully clothed.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Okay, just fully turn the water on the bathtub.

Speaker 5 (03:23):
We're like, what are you doing?

Speaker 6 (03:25):
He just decided he wanted to take a bath. So
I have wonderful memories of all things.

Speaker 7 (03:29):
Have Botch walk in on him in the bathtubbing A
wait a second, something's fishy.

Speaker 3 (03:34):
Something's fishy about this, and then the whole night is
something fishy.

Speaker 6 (03:38):
Full circle.

Speaker 7 (03:39):
I'm very excited for my Susan asked me what I
want for my birthday meal?

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Yeah, I am having macaroni and cheese and hot dogs.

Speaker 5 (03:45):
Oh is she making? Is the crafter?

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, Oh, it's gonna be boxed. Ma I want to
she would make.

Speaker 7 (03:50):
She'd be up all day right now grinding different meats
to make me a hot dog if I want to.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
And I don't want that.

Speaker 7 (03:56):
I want Hebrew National hot dogs and box macaroni cheese.

Speaker 6 (03:59):
I'm very Oh man, congratulations, good for you. And can
we talk about the upcoming birthday party?

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Yeah, it's so funny.

Speaker 7 (04:10):
Literally, as you and I are talking, Chris Fishel, Chris Fishell,
just text me happy birthday.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Brothers.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Oh he felt the Benny Hannah in the end. He did.
He absolutely did. Yeah, So no where list is final?

Speaker 8 (04:24):
Saturday came yesterday.

Speaker 7 (04:27):
Uh we we have They sent us like the whole
layout of the where everything's going to be. I move
where the bar was going to be and where the
the prom.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Photo station is going to be.

Speaker 7 (04:36):
So uh yeah, we're at about one hundred and seventy guests.

Speaker 4 (04:40):
Oh my god, are you gonna are you gonna take
a limbo?

Speaker 2 (04:44):
No, because we're staying at the hotel.

Speaker 7 (04:45):
So yeah, but where it's There was fifty three people
at my wedding.

Speaker 4 (04:51):
Exactly, small wedding, really that small.

Speaker 7 (04:53):
Yes, there's more than three times the amount of people
coming to my fiftieth.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
And every time I get down on myself where I
say assume, like.

Speaker 7 (05:00):
This is ridiculous, Like why am I doing this, She's like, Hey,
you haven't had a birthday party since you were twelve?

Speaker 2 (05:06):
Yeah, this is every birthday built up. You deserve this.
I'm like, wait, really never had a birthday party since
you were twelve?

Speaker 7 (05:12):
Marsden threw me a surprise party that I didn't know
was happening and would absolutely not have gone to party.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Is here Ernie exactly? But other than that, no, I've
never got a birthday.

Speaker 4 (05:22):
I had no idea.

Speaker 7 (05:23):
Yeah, no, people just started showing up and literally by
the fifteenth person, I still didn't know it was a party.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
And I was like, that's so weird. People just keep
coming by to see you, Jason, and you look at me.

Speaker 7 (05:32):
One point he goes idiot, it's a surprise birthday party for.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
I was like, oh, because I just yeah, I'm not
a birthday guy. That's but this year I'm going out.

Speaker 7 (05:40):
Yeah, so big, big party, get your get your food on,
get your drink on.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
We got three food stations. We got sliders, street tacos,
and apasta bar. Oh okay, and then the full bar
and then.

Speaker 7 (05:49):
We've got We talked to the DJ. There is not
a song that's going to be played past nineteen ninety four.

Speaker 5 (05:54):
So excited.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
It's gonna be a ton a ton of fun. So yeah,
it's weird.

Speaker 7 (06:00):
And I've been talking about the little pockets of people
that are going to be there because I have people
that I grew up with. Then people that like some
of the some of the cast of don't just sit
there in New York when I did when I was eleven,
are going.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
To be there.

Speaker 7 (06:09):
My summer camp best friend from like the seventh grade
is flying it.

Speaker 2 (06:13):
Yeah, it's where it's crazy. There's gonna be so many.

Speaker 7 (06:16):
And this might be other than Matt Nelson's funeral. This
might be the biggest gathering of Boy Meets World cast
and crew since the show ended.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Alex days are hit me up yesterday. Alex is coming great.

Speaker 7 (06:30):
Tony had to cancel unfortunately he wasn't able to come,
but most of the writers, producers, there's gonna be a
whole group.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Bill and Body are coming.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (06:37):
So it's just can't wait.

Speaker 7 (06:39):
It's gonna be a huge the big, like the biggest
Boy meets World group since since Matti's party.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
And for a good thing. So we're we're.

Speaker 6 (06:46):
It's exactly, we're not waiting for a funeral, exactly.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Good.

Speaker 6 (06:49):
Yeah, I love it. Well, happy birthday. Will you deserve
to be celebrated every day.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Thank you.

Speaker 8 (06:55):
We're so happy you were born. Thank you.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Best. Welcome to Pod Meets World.

Speaker 5 (07:02):
I'm Daniel Offishal, I'm rather strong, and I'm fifty.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
You're fifty.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
Yikes. That's very loud.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
Now, well, at least it's very loud.

Speaker 9 (07:17):
It's not hearing aide exactly right, ten years sixty will
be exactly.

Speaker 6 (07:23):
This segment is brought to you by Samsung. Gentlemen, you
know that a lot of people do ads for Samsung
phones and claim to be down for the cause, but
I have ten years of Instagram selfie photos where you
can see me holding a Samsung.

Speaker 5 (07:40):
I am down for the cause.

Speaker 9 (07:43):
Yeah, you've actually changed your name to Danielle Samsung.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
That was one of the tas we were going to get.
Is you were going to at Samsung?

Speaker 7 (07:52):
Was it?

Speaker 6 (07:52):
Yeah, it's exactly right. I'm gonna I want I want
Android Samsung for life, as with just a four four life, right,
four life exactly for Where are we going to put
that one? Should I put it on my other arm?

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Not yet? For the ballance? I love it exactly.

Speaker 6 (08:08):
Many have tried to sway me over the years, but
I am a Samsung girly through and through.

Speaker 4 (08:13):
I gonna be honest with you.

Speaker 7 (08:14):
I've looked at some of their new phones, like the
flip open phones and all that stuff, and I've kind
of thought.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
About maybe switching the z fold.

Speaker 7 (08:21):
It's there's some really cool phones coming out and I
was like, I kind of want one of those.

Speaker 5 (08:26):
It is so cool.

Speaker 6 (08:27):
There are a lot of reasons for my Samsung brand loyalty,
but since my phone is where my entire life happens,
I need something that can handle more than just texts
and phone calls. As the self appointed new Ryan Seacrest.
I am constantly bouncing between podcast edits, text from Jensen
about Keaton bumping his chin, posting on Instagram, and looking

(08:49):
up things like where can I find rare squishies.

Speaker 5 (08:52):
For my children?

Speaker 6 (08:54):
I am a multitasker and my phone has to keep
up with my brain. Luckily, for all of us spinning plates,
Samsung has just introduced the Galaxy Fold eight.

Speaker 5 (09:04):
That's the one.

Speaker 6 (09:04):
You have been seeing, well, I want to get it.
Also the Galaxy Fold eight Ultra. And yes, the new
size means videos and social content fill the screen the
way they're supposed to. They both fold, which brings a
little bit of nostalgia for US nineties babies, but it
is also easier to fit in your bag or your pocket.

(09:25):
Samsung makes my busy life easier, which is honestly all
I can ask for.

Speaker 5 (09:31):
So join the Club of Samsung.

Speaker 8 (09:33):
I would love to have you.

Speaker 6 (09:34):
If you're thinking about upgrading or have been curious about foldables,
the Galaxy Z Fold eight and the Galaxy Z Fold
eight Ultra.

Speaker 5 (09:41):
Are worth checking out.

Speaker 6 (09:43):
You can find the Galaxy foldabule that's right for you
at Samsung dot com. Well, everyone, here we are. It's

(10:03):
season one, episode one.

Speaker 9 (10:06):
Maybe every episode of World. We could just cover one
year of the in between, okay, in other words, like
we just talked about two thousand to two thousand.

Speaker 4 (10:15):
And one, okay, right right now, and we'll just what
were we doing that year? Can you remember? And maybe
we can do a little research? All right? What were
we doing?

Speaker 7 (10:23):
Well? Well, I was I jerked right into Go Fish. Yeah,
So we did Go Fish in two thousand and two
thousand and one with Andy Dick and Kieran Culkin, and
we did six or eight.

Speaker 4 (10:33):
Episodes of Goldfish and it was single camera.

Speaker 7 (10:35):
It was single camera. It was the worst experience I've
had in the industry. Oh why, It just it was,
you know, you're coming right off of Boy Meet World.
My anxiety was like at its height. It was a
totally different vibe. There's, you know, no laughing on the
set kind of thing. Andy and I got along great.
Actually we all got along. Grade We had nothing to
do with most of the actors. I had a problem

(10:56):
with one. She wasn't my favorite. But it was just
a whole different vibe. It just it really was coming
off of something like Boy and jumping in retrospect. I
should have done something which you can't do in the industry,
which is I should have taken a little break, but
you can't.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
You're under I'm under contract. We got to pump you
into the next show.

Speaker 7 (11:13):
I went right into NBC and so we you know,
it was fun working, but the entire experience was completely different.

Speaker 8 (11:20):
I can't believe ABC let you go.

Speaker 7 (11:23):
Well, I was still it was because I was under
contract with Disney, so it was still it was. This
was still I think Buena Vista or Disney for NBC,
so it was a company. Yeah, yeah, so at the time,
and it was I loved the crew and it was
the same. The reason I decided to pick this one,
I had a couple of different options, and I picked
this one because of the cast, because of Kieran Culcombe,

(11:44):
because of Andy Dick, and it was the whole crew
that just came off of News Radio, which was one
of my favorite shows of the nineties and I think
a completely underrated show.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
So I that that was one of the main reasons
that I picked.

Speaker 4 (11:56):
It was the pitch for the show.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Uh go fish was there.

Speaker 7 (12:01):
It is.

Speaker 4 (12:03):
It's very boy mes world looking.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
It was I Also, this is the problem.

Speaker 7 (12:06):
This is the one thing that almost made me not
do it is I was playing the older brother. I
went from Ben Savage's older brother, who's Fred Savage's younger brother,
to Kieran Culkin's older brother, who was Macaulay Culkin's younger brother.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
Right, But it was cool. I got to play a.

Speaker 4 (12:21):
Teacher, so creative. You know, give actors a chance. When
they just you, it's like, literally you have to walk
in as the character or they will not give you.
They cannot think of you as anything else. It's yeah,
it's ridiculous.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
It was.

Speaker 7 (12:36):
Yeah, but the cast again, we had fun. There's some
great comedy.

Speaker 4 (12:39):
What was the pitch? What was the show? It was
just him growing up?

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Yeah, yeah, pretty much. It's it's it's high school.

Speaker 7 (12:45):
It's a grittier version of kid understanding high school with
his family.

Speaker 2 (12:50):
And it's that we were the Troutners was the name
of the family. So go fish get it.

Speaker 7 (12:56):
Yeah, And then all these people from GoFish went on
to do like big movies and became big directors and
all that kind of stuff like that.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
So it was but it was just a different, completely
different experience.

Speaker 7 (13:05):
It was It was not not nearly as fun as
Boy Met Twirl, and it was. And I think one
of the main reasons is no audience, and that that
I'm an audience guy.

Speaker 2 (13:13):
I loved having an audience. I always did. Shooting a
movie every day is exhausting. Yeah, it's exhausting.

Speaker 9 (13:18):
That's like when we talk about when we talk to
the nine o two one, no kids, I'm like, that's
a different situation.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
Year they shot a movie for on.

Speaker 4 (13:25):
Location, I know that's like, no, that's so much work.
We were really lucky.

Speaker 7 (13:29):
So that was my That was my first year struggling
with anxiety, struggling with a new show.

Speaker 2 (13:34):
That was That was two thousand, two thousand one.

Speaker 4 (13:35):
And you came out to visit me in New York.

Speaker 9 (13:37):
I came out to visit New York New Years of
two thousand two, two thousand and one.

Speaker 7 (13:41):
Yeah, with you, I just I just moved into my
home in two thousand. I've been here for twenty six
years now, which is crazy.

Speaker 9 (13:47):
But did you move into your house right before Boy
Meets World ended or right.

Speaker 7 (13:50):
After right after? Okay, because it's so got is this
a horriboy to judge? It's because I had the Ferrari
when I moved and I bought the Ferrari from the
director of GoFish. Oh so so, yeah, so that's how
that's how I judge it.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
By cars. Yeah, so I knew it. But yes, I moved.
I moved.

Speaker 7 (14:09):
So it was a big year two thousand and two
thousand and one for a lot of reasons. Good in that,
you know, the GoFish was there, and I was working
in an under contract. Bad and that I was dealing
with anxiety, and Boy Mets World had just ended. But
there was I always like to think there was more
good than bad. But those years until about two thousand
and nine or ten were prettyool.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
Yeah how about you, guys?

Speaker 2 (14:39):
What were you guys doing?

Speaker 6 (14:40):
Writer?

Speaker 4 (14:41):
What about you?

Speaker 9 (14:42):
So?

Speaker 4 (14:42):
Right when Boy the World ended, I went to Spain.

Speaker 9 (14:47):
I was going to do a language immersion program with.

Speaker 4 (14:51):
My best friend and we got there.

Speaker 9 (14:54):
We went to Salamanca and I got all the way
there before finding out they wanted me to screen test
for a move be back in La.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
Of course, so I Spanish, I stopped.

Speaker 9 (15:08):
So I left Salamanca and came all the way back
for a screen test and did not get the part.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
Which show do you remember?

Speaker 4 (15:17):
It was a movie?

Speaker 9 (15:18):
It was called Cheaters. Matt Lawrence ended up being in it.
He was a small part and not the part I
was going out for. I was going out for the
main role. I thought this group was really funny.

Speaker 4 (15:27):
It was all about kids who cheat, like a different
way I don't know, and it was a really funny. Yeah.
The director has gone has done some really cool stuff.
I liked his work. His name's Andrew Something. He did
this hysterical found footage movie called Mail Order Bride that
is so funny.

Speaker 9 (15:44):
Anyway, I didn't get the part, but I flew all
the way back. Actually, Will, I saw you when I
flew back. I remember you helped me prep for this
audition because I was so out of it. I was
like on the verge of getting sick. And you met
me at Childo's house and I was like, I got
this and you read with me and yeah, and helped
me like prepare.

Speaker 4 (16:00):
And then I went in and didn't get the part.
And then I went back to Spain.

Speaker 9 (16:04):
And then I went back to Spain eventually met up
with my buddy who had stayed for the whole immersion program.
He had stayed there for four weeks or whatever. But
I met him again and we drove around Spain. I
flew out with my girlfriend who had worked on Boy
Met World Brook, and she and I then went back
to California from Spain and I shot uh Buck Naked

(16:24):
Arson or Eyes of Fire Feel the Heat as it
got renamed horribly later Fire Coleman Feel the Heat dumbest. Yeah,
the distributor that finally got a hold of it. Sound
like that oh so bad? Well yeah, like and Buck
Naked Arson is a weird but also sounds like a
bad born But it's kind of funny because what is
this about?

Speaker 4 (16:44):
Ye Anyway?

Speaker 9 (16:45):
Uh So we shot that at my parents' property with
Amy Snow who wrote it and directed it, who was
a page phone page on Boy Mets World Side. We
became friends there and Christine Laken was in it, My
brother was in it, a Zora.

Speaker 4 (16:58):
Sky and Rusty came a step.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
We had so much fun making this movie.

Speaker 9 (17:03):
Uh you know, it was a struggle, like we had
no money, we shop. It was like we were one
of the first movies to shoot on digital cameras, Like
you had a red didn't you know they reads didn't
exist yet? We may know we were one of the first.

Speaker 4 (17:16):
There was.

Speaker 9 (17:16):
It was a camera that George Lucas was shooting Phantom
Menace on. So it's literally that he had the other
ones and we got two and he got the rest
of them because they were only like six available or whatever.
And so we yeah, and we shot a whole movie
in like fourteen days, which was unheard of at that time,
but because we were doing digital and we just you
know whatever, we all it was all in the woods,

(17:37):
so it's like one location.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
We had so much fun.

Speaker 9 (17:40):
And it isn't a bad movie either. It turned out,
you know, I'm pretty proud of it. It just never
got it.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
Look at that higher field.

Speaker 4 (17:47):
There isn't even a colon. It's his eyes of firefield.

Speaker 7 (17:49):
The heat.

Speaker 5 (17:50):
I also love the firefield heat.

Speaker 7 (17:51):
You don't know what the movie is because everybody has
this really like stark expression except for Christine.

Speaker 4 (17:59):
Smile.

Speaker 9 (18:00):
They actually like re They repurposed pictures we had taken
because we did in our own poster where we were
all like sort of acting like our characters in like
like mugshots, but we're all like holding flares. So like,
she's like this actress who is trying to you know,
be a model or actress. So she made that face
while she's holding a flare. So they completely repurposed these
photographs so it doesn't make any sense. And they tried

(18:20):
to make it look like a drama. Oh, it's so annoying.

Speaker 4 (18:23):
Anyway, it's not a bad movie. We should do a recap.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
It is not a bad movie. I remember it. I
remember Eyes of Fire, Feel the Heat.

Speaker 4 (18:29):
It was fun. And so then I moved to New York.

Speaker 9 (18:32):
That summer, I drove across the country brook and we
finished filming Eyes of Fire, Feel the Heat.

Speaker 7 (18:36):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (18:36):
And then I drove across the country and Brooke and
I moved to New York and I started school like
two days after I arrived in New York. We took
a while to drive across the country. I think I
took like three weeks, camping along the way and having
an amazing time. And then got there and yeah, started
started that Columbia. That felt like two days after we arrived.

Speaker 4 (18:54):
And then it just became like school and I was.
I loved it. I loved school so much. And I
love New York. How about you, Danielle?

Speaker 7 (19:01):
Who?

Speaker 6 (19:03):
No, I don't I don't remember, don't know why.

Speaker 8 (19:05):
No, I wasn't in Manhattan Beach anymore.

Speaker 6 (19:08):
I moved I think this year, so I'd stopped living
in Manhattan Beach. Shortly after Boy Meets World ended, I
stopped living in Manhattan Beach and I.

Speaker 8 (19:15):
Moved to Beverly Hills.

Speaker 5 (19:18):
And I was living in Beverly Hills for a little while.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
I was you know, were you auditioning at all? You
weren't auditioning at all? Were you nothing?

Speaker 6 (19:29):
No, I was not auditioning at all. This was a
rough year for Danielle personally. I was in a very bad,
unhealthy relationship that also then ended around two So it
started at the beginning of two thousand, ended toward the
end of two thousand or the beginning of two thousand
and one, and was like a really rough rough time.

(19:53):
And then I left Beverly Hills and I moved to
Sherman Oaks, and I left in such a rush that
my mom actually had to find my apartment for me,
and I never even saw it my mom, I mean
I saw it not until I moved in. And I moved,
and then I moved into this apartment that she picked

(20:13):
for me in Sherman Oaks, which was right across the
street from Amel's Diner. So your Paul was happy oh jeez,
so happy. Oh my god, I love being able to
talk to a diner.

Speaker 5 (20:24):
Oh me too. Me is so good. And then just
to be able to walk to it.

Speaker 8 (20:27):
Like especially anywhere in LA if you have a cool
place you can.

Speaker 4 (20:30):
Walk to, that's awesome.

Speaker 5 (20:32):
Yeah. So yeah, that was pretty much it.

Speaker 6 (20:36):
That that year was not a fun year, not a
year I like revisiting at all.

Speaker 7 (20:40):
Did you Obviously the personal stuff was was bad enough,
But when it came to your career, were you actively
trying to not like, I don't want to do any
of this stuff? Then? Were your managers and agents kind
of like, dude, what are you doing? We need you
to come in and do this kind of stuff? Or
were they not bugging you? Did you auditions and things

(21:01):
like that?

Speaker 6 (21:01):
Not that I remember. I know for sure I had
said I don't want anything. I don't want audition for anything.
I I'm just I'm done for a little bit.

Speaker 5 (21:10):
And I don't remember there being a lot of pushback.

Speaker 6 (21:12):
But I also think around this time I was starting
to feel like, you know, because I was still with
Judy Savage. But at this point, now I was nineteen
gonna be twenty, and she's age she's a kid's agent,
and so there was also this like transition where it
wasn't that hard, Like there wasn't that much for her
to be sending me out on anyway, because she was

(21:32):
a kid's agent. So for me to say, like I'm
in a holding pattern, I'm not sure what I'm going
to do, we just kind of put that on hold.
And then I did eventually sign with the Young Talent
department at Innovative, which was ran by Abby Bluestone, who
is still there and she's amazing.

Speaker 2 (21:51):
It was at one point, yeah.

Speaker 9 (21:55):
Because you you you went over to Innovate with Steve
Muller and then introduced me to him and he wrapped
me for years.

Speaker 6 (22:01):
Yeah yeah, yeah, so I know I went over there eventually,
but that wasn't it was kind of like it was
just kind of a perfect way to take a break.

Speaker 5 (22:09):
I had aged out of Judy.

Speaker 6 (22:10):
I wasn't looking to get someone else and I wasn't
so I wasn't really auditioning. So yeah, that it really
this this whole period of time, like you said, well,
two thousand to two thousand, I would say for me,
two thousand and seven is just a bunch of years.

Speaker 5 (22:27):
I don't even like revisiting.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
They're just like with you.

Speaker 9 (22:30):
More and then let's try and do it every episode.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
It's going to be fun to revisit that every What
did you get at Mel's? What was your go to
Mel's order?

Speaker 5 (22:44):
I have a few things.

Speaker 6 (22:45):
I love two over easy eggs, well done, soured, ough toast,
curly fries in a side of ranch dressing.

Speaker 2 (22:50):
Oh it sounds magic.

Speaker 5 (22:51):
Wow, that's great.

Speaker 4 (22:52):
That's a lot though, curly fries with ranch. That's a
hat in the hat.

Speaker 7 (22:56):
But oh my god, talking about donning hats had them
so yeah, that hat on a hat.

Speaker 5 (23:04):
It's a thing. And then.

Speaker 8 (23:07):
You your has to be ketchup as opposed.

Speaker 9 (23:09):
To either regular French fries and franch dressing or curly fries.

Speaker 4 (23:15):
I don't know, it's tony flavors going on.

Speaker 9 (23:18):
Yeah, it's like, yeah, it's because you know, curly fries
have a different flavor than regular.

Speaker 4 (23:23):
Yeah, they have the seasoning so you don't need to
add more to it.

Speaker 9 (23:26):
Like, so you don't you I'm an anti ranch person.

Speaker 2 (23:31):
Yeah, branches, ranch and pepperoni pizza.

Speaker 7 (23:39):
I was gonna say you dip pizza hellis. Of course
I've done things with the ranch that you can't even
talk about in this podcast.

Speaker 2 (23:47):
That's disgusting.

Speaker 4 (23:48):
I don't even know what it means.

Speaker 2 (23:49):
Yeah you do.

Speaker 6 (24:06):
We have gone over it a few times in passing.
But should we just paint the picture of where we
were in twenty fourteen and when we, you know, heard
about the reboot. You guys have told the story. You
heard about it in the press, and then Michael took.

Speaker 5 (24:23):
You to a lunch or a dinner, dinner.

Speaker 2 (24:25):
Lunch, lunch, lunch?

Speaker 4 (24:27):
Wasn't it months later?

Speaker 2 (24:28):
I was months Yeah, they were already casting the show. Yeah,
it was the day.

Speaker 7 (24:32):
It was the day of first casting.

Speaker 9 (24:37):
I thought it was the first one because Sabrina was
in the room. She told me why she was one
of the fourteen kids or whatever, because they've already been calling.
We were there thousands of sessions when we got okay.

Speaker 7 (24:48):
Yeah, then they were midcasting when we said about this,
and then Michael screamed at you in the lunch room
about doing the show.

Speaker 4 (24:56):
I actually remember. So I was out.

Speaker 9 (24:58):
My had friends visiting from out of town, so they
were visiting me in La and there, and I took
them out for a drink to tell them that I
was going to propose to Alex I hadn't. I had
made the decision, but of course I hadn't done it
asked her yet. But I made the decision. And so
my friends were visiting. I took him out and I
was like, you guess I'm getting me because they don't
gotten dating married. I'm gonna make my own ring. I'm

(25:19):
gonna do the whole thing. So I just literally just
said that, and I got a text saying like congrats
on Girl Meets World from another friend, and I was like, what,
what what are you talking about?

Speaker 4 (25:29):
And then and then he's like, I thought you knew
or that you were involved.

Speaker 9 (25:32):
And then I'm like google and sure enough, and that's
when I think, you know, probably reached out to Will
right away, and I was.

Speaker 4 (25:38):
Like, what the hell is going on? But it was
just so ironic that here I was like, I am
going in this new direction.

Speaker 5 (25:44):
I'm getting married.

Speaker 4 (25:45):
My life is sewing anyone moving, man, I've grown up. No,
they're gonna be put on the leather jacket, get the wig.

Speaker 2 (25:57):
But we also wanting to be show. We don't even
I wanted you to know that there's a.

Speaker 4 (26:00):
Show going on anyway.

Speaker 9 (26:01):
So it was very very disheartening moment. Yeah, yeah, and
then yes, and then Michael took us out to lunch.
Will and I I don't even know why we agreed
to go because at that point and I wanted to
do the.

Speaker 7 (26:11):
Show, but I think we wanted to hear like, how
do we not even get the common courtesy of hey,
this is happening, right, And of course we knew we
were going to get the Michael Jacobs run around like
like Michael can sell anything to anyone. So I'm sure
by the end of the meeting he thought we would
be apologizing to him for even wondering why we didn't
know about well.

Speaker 9 (26:30):
And he did convince us to go to the casting session.
From that we were just supposed to have lunch, and
he talked and talked and talked and yelled and yelled
and yelled, and at one point it was like didn't
I let you.

Speaker 4 (26:39):
Go to college? Was the thing he was screaming at
me because in the middle of restaurant it was a lot.

Speaker 9 (26:46):
And then but then he you know whatever, he said,
just come to the cast in and I remember it
because I do like being on the other side of
casting situations like and so we agreeed and I remember
you and I driving to disgo to the thing together.
I jumped in your car for whatever reason, and driving
there and being nervous about going on the casting session
and being a little like, well, should we have done this?

(27:07):
And we got out and watched him do a whole
session with a group of girls, so he gave like
a lecture to all of them before any of them read,
and then I think he made a joke about us
reading with them, and we were like, no, we're not
going to do that, and then we got out of
there before anybody actually audition. So I don't remember watching
anybody actually audition. We just watched him give a speech

(27:27):
that went on very long before anybody even read.

Speaker 7 (27:31):
What well, I remember he's got them all sitting around
the table and then he gives a speech, and then
you and I walked in, and Ben was there, or Danielle,
you were somebody else from the show was there because
we walked in and we hugged them, and Michael went, Okay, everybody,
I want you to stop, and I want you to
turn and look at them in the corner, see them
that that's what we're building right now, and so I

(27:51):
want to make sure that we're finding that for the
next generation. Seeah, they're still together. Yea, they are still friends.

Speaker 9 (27:56):
I think it was just that we we probably hugged
Sally Steiner and bar No, no, somebody, No, there was
somebody there.

Speaker 2 (28:01):
Somebody does No.

Speaker 7 (28:03):
I think there was somebody else there, because we walked
in and we were like, and it was yeah, it
was maybe it was Ben.

Speaker 4 (28:08):
Who was there.

Speaker 9 (28:09):
Well, it was super It was super smart on Michael's
part because it definitely made us feel like we were
already part of a team you know nothing about Yeah,
And then I remember you and me getting into the car,
and that was one of the first times we had
a conversation that we would continue to have for the
next several years, which was was.

Speaker 4 (28:27):
It always like that?

Speaker 7 (28:28):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (28:29):
That was the question I asked. I was like, was
it when we got notes as kids? Was it like
the way he just gave notes to those kids? Because
if so, that means I need to revise how I
thought about our time on Boy Meets World. And that
was the beginning of that process for us, because it's
suddenly seen Michael give notes as an adult felt very

(28:49):
different and and and it made a lot less sense.
And I realized that, you know, and of course at
this point, I was already directing stuff and writing stuff.
I'd made short films my brother and really loved working
with actors and loved and I think if you had
asked me up until then, I would have said that
I learned a lot from how to talk to actors
from Michael, And then when I watched him talk to

(29:11):
the kids, I was like, oh, no, I learned. I
feel the exact opposite that this is the way to
talk to actors the media.

Speaker 7 (29:18):
Then you did learn how to talk to actors for Michael,
because you were like, exactly, exactly, well, no.

Speaker 9 (29:25):
Really, you know, I went through I had gone through
a process at the age of thirty, so that would
have been like a couple of three or four years
before this this meeting, I had gone through a whole
process with my wife where, you know, because my wife
is an amazing actress and really loves acting and loves
studying acting and had, you know, become an actor in
as an adult at the age of twenty two.

Speaker 4 (29:44):
Is she moved to La to do it and pursue
her career, but she studied it.

Speaker 9 (29:48):
She always was taking classes, always training and always thinking
about it and talk and not in a way that
was obnoxio, you know, just in a way that the
professional should knew what she was doing. And so we
would have conversations about acting when we were first started
data and started working together, and I learned so much
because I used to tell her. I'd be like, I
don't like notes from directors unless it's just faster, louder, funnier.

(30:09):
Just tell me how what you want, tell me the
end result, and I'll get there, which is very much
of Michael Jacob's head, right, Like i'll give you a
line reading, I will tell you you need to say
it like this, or your intention is this. And it
disempowers the actor, right, It disempowers them from having their
own creative input or coming with their own intention. And
it just I realized by working with my wife or
watching my wife work, And then I started taking acting

(30:32):
classes and then started working with actors as a director,
I realized, like, oh no, like it's so much better.
It's such a more interesting process when an actor brings
their own creativity, their own decisions, their own choices, and
even if they're wrong choices, they own them. And a
director's job isn't to say I want you to get
to where I have in my predetermined head. If they

(30:54):
do that usually doesn't result in good acting, you know.
I think it can work with kids, which is why
it worked well on us as kids.

Speaker 4 (31:01):
A lot, but it disempowers the actor. I don't know.

Speaker 9 (31:04):
I learned how to be an actor basically in my thirties.
And and then yeah, watching these notes with Michael really
started that problem. And I remember you and I being
like this is weird.

Speaker 2 (31:13):
Like it was.

Speaker 9 (31:14):
I remember feeling like dizzy from it. Like I remember
like kind of my head spinning and being like, wow,
I don't I don't I don't know how to feel
about the world.

Speaker 7 (31:22):
Right Well, yeah, because it was a recalculation of everything
we thought we had known, we'd been so conditioned to
be like, this is how it's supposed to be, this
is how it's going to be, this is how Michael
wants it.

Speaker 2 (31:30):
To Then watch and also just an adult, Lens was like, hey,
I also.

Speaker 4 (31:34):
Just remember like thinking that what he was saying didn't
really make make any sense.

Speaker 2 (31:38):
He was just talking.

Speaker 9 (31:39):
It was like a lot of it was a lot
of like forceful, smart sounding talking that I was kind
of like, I don't think these are this is explaining
the character or characters very well at all.

Speaker 4 (31:50):
Yeah. I was like, I don't this is not and
then I was like it.

Speaker 3 (31:52):
Was it always like that?

Speaker 4 (31:53):
And I think it was.

Speaker 2 (31:55):
I think it was too.

Speaker 7 (31:56):
Yeah, Yeah, it was a It was a that was
a rough time because it was also you know, Michael
saying like apologizing, You're right, I should have told you guys,
the show is happening. But whatever you want to do,
whatever you want to do on the show, it's yours.

Speaker 2 (32:10):
You say it. You want to be on the show.
What do you want to do?

Speaker 7 (32:12):
And that started the process of then realizing that none
of that was true. So it was it was if
you want to come and guest star a couple of times,
that's what you can do. But you want to write,
you want to do this. He just wasn't going to
allow it for me anyway. He did for you guys,
which is great, but for me it was like, no,
you can't be writer, No you can't do this.

Speaker 9 (32:28):
You can't do that was like, well, the writing is
what he I mean, what he could give away is directing,
which because he doesn't he doesn't really, Yeah, he looked
the director in Michael's arrangement is much more of a
sort of a traffic cop position. It's not a creative partner,
the same way that like being on the writing staff
is like for him that it's an old school television idea,

(32:50):
right that like the writers and the producers are the
real creative force working, you know, almost directly with the actors,
and the directors just kind of there to point a
camera at them. Yeah, and which is not the case,
I will say, oh god, it is in the way
some people think of it, the way they some people
set it up. But like in our experience, even in
Michael's original arrangement on Boy Mets World, that was not
the case because, like as we've talked about our director,

(33:12):
our directors were incredibly instrumental in helping us and making
us feel creatively you know, involved in But I think
in Michael's view that was never the case, and he
kind of took credit from the writing side for everything,
and so he liked writing.

Speaker 2 (33:27):
I mean, I was in the room, so he did.
It's what he would sit there, you know.

Speaker 7 (33:30):
I mean we can get into that later, but yeah,
I mean I was also I'd like to point out
by this point, I was already writing for ThunderCats, Transformers
teen Titans Go. This wasn't like, Hey, I'd like to
try writing for the first time ever on Girl Meets World.

Speaker 2 (33:41):
It was like, no, I think.

Speaker 7 (33:42):
I think the year I met with Michael, I sold
like seven or eight episodic scripts.

Speaker 2 (33:47):
So it was like I was, I was writing at
that point, and it was plus you think that he.

Speaker 9 (33:52):
Would have, you know, because just in your creative relationship,
like you guys have seven years of history, and you're
very funny and very talented, and he wants your talents
to act in show.

Speaker 4 (34:00):
He think that he'd be like, great, we can figure
this out. Let's let's give you a writing shot. I
can mentor you through this.

Speaker 2 (34:05):
Yeah, which would have been which would have been interesting.
But no, none of that happened.

Speaker 7 (34:08):
So yeah, with the whole process of Girl Meets World
was odd and we weren't really Danielle, you and I.
I don't know about you and writer, but you and
I weren't really in each other's lives all that much
at this point.

Speaker 8 (34:18):
No, I mean, I don't even remember the last time
I would have.

Speaker 2 (34:22):
Seen you when we all four of us had that way.
I was that before or after? That was before, wasn't
it when we used to do it when we tried
to get together and have dinner a bunch of.

Speaker 8 (34:31):
Time on thousand and four, early almost.

Speaker 9 (34:35):
Two thousand, because I was still at my Laurel Canyon house. Yeah, yeah,
so that was like two thousand and six. And then
we also did dinner at two thousand and nine and
my other place on the deck, so that would have
been Yeah, so it might have.

Speaker 7 (34:45):
Been the last time I saw you. I might not
have seen you for five or six years. Wait, do
you know why were you and I hanging out?

Speaker 6 (34:51):
You and I got together with Alex and my ex
right before you were married.

Speaker 8 (34:59):
Yeah, before before we were married.

Speaker 4 (35:00):
And I don't but we did that too.

Speaker 2 (35:02):
Remember you came all the game. We did that game before.

Speaker 9 (35:05):
What that was, right, was all before So you guys
were in each other's lives by at the time. Girl gone, Yeah,
we had been hanging out, and like that was when I,
you know, decided to have my wedding on the same
day that Danielle whoever set her wedding date.

Speaker 6 (35:18):
You know what, honestly, you I just should have I
should have taken that as a sign and just not
had a wedding.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
Yeah, just come to just not shown up and just gone.

Speaker 5 (35:28):
Your wedding because.

Speaker 8 (35:28):
Your wedding ended up being a worthwhile marriage.

Speaker 7 (35:34):
Well I remember, yeah, I remember Ben and I talked
about it where we were like okay, Ben, Ben's like
I'll go to Danielle's and I'm like, all right, I'm
going to ride her.

Speaker 2 (35:41):
So it was just like we had to. We made
sure that we rapped, I know.

Speaker 8 (35:45):
Like aorry the only weekends like are you kidding me?

Speaker 2 (35:50):
Are you kidding me?

Speaker 6 (35:52):
But the worst part of that of you getting married
the same weekend as me is that we had talked
in the press about the idea that you and I
were getting married on the same weekend, and then Ryder
just told the press what weekend he was getting married.

Speaker 9 (36:06):
Ye oh and weekend up like that Friday because yeah,
they like yeah, us weekly or whatever did it. Interviewed
me and was like you're getting married and I was like, yeah,
I'm getting married this weekend, and that.

Speaker 6 (36:17):
Everybody writer and I had talked about and so everyone
knew I was getting married. And then I had press outside,
I had paparazzi inside my wedding venue, and I was like, writer, well,
we are for better or worse, we are jumping into
Girl Meets World. I think it's going to be really

(36:37):
exciting to figure out exactly how different we feel about
Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World. We've just I
mean truly the Meets World universe, the World metaverse just finished.

Speaker 2 (36:51):
Yeah's going to be totally different.

Speaker 6 (36:53):
That's the thing that's yes, sure, and I do think
we need to just prepare ourselves for the fact that
what we had watched seven seasons up was an ABC
prime time show and what we are going into is
a cable channel children's program on Disney Channel.

Speaker 7 (37:11):
I think there's a big difference in being Boy Meets World,
which was a show that was geared towards young people,
and Girl Meets World, which is a kid's show, and
those are two different things.

Speaker 6 (37:20):
I think even geared toward young people makes it sound
too similar. It was a show that attempted to appeal
to multiple generations. Is a kid show, yes, And I
think I think everything we looked, you know that those shows,
these upcoming Girl Meets World episodes are we are going

(37:40):
to have to look through the lens of does a
six to ten year old understand this? What are the
messages for a six to ten year old whereas that
wasn't as much of a focus for Boy Meets World.

Speaker 2 (37:53):
Right, I'm just looking forward to hating on some kids.

Speaker 6 (37:57):
We will not do that.

Speaker 2 (38:00):
We're excited to just hate on some children. They're amazing.

Speaker 7 (38:06):
But yeah, it's going to be tonally I'm worried, meaning
like it's such a shift that it's a shift for us,
Like we have to shift our focus of how we're
watching it, drop drop shot.

Speaker 6 (38:20):
I think you need to think about this from the standpoint.
I mean, I've got almost five year old and I've
got a seven year old. I've got to think about
what these episodes. I'm going to try to look at
them through the eyes of watching with Adler. What what
would I want Adler to take away from this? What
would what would Adler think about this? Maybe you should
watch it with Adler.

Speaker 2 (38:40):
Wait, we're still going to be overly critical about the
story though, right of course.

Speaker 9 (38:44):
Okay, I mean it's still goody god, Yeah, we're still
going to be woke.

Speaker 4 (38:51):
Okay, Yeah, that's our modus operationis man.

Speaker 2 (39:00):
Welcome to Wolke Bitter has Beens. I can't wait.

Speaker 5 (39:04):
Welcome to has been I'm part one of that.

Speaker 2 (39:08):
Daniel Fishal I'm Rider Strong, I'm Will Friedel.

Speaker 6 (39:13):
Anyway, we're excited to get into Girl meets World. It's
going to be interesting for all of us. Thank you
all for being here. We will see you next time
with our very first recap. Pod Meets World is an
